Anaphylaxis is one of those conditions we think we have got pretty well sorted. Recognise it early, give adrenaline, support the airway and circulation, and crack on. And in fairness, for the vast majority of patients, that approach works really well. But in this Roadside to Resus episode we take a step back and ask a pretty uncomfortable question, have we actually been thinking about anaphylaxis in the wrong way? Using some fascinating new evidence from the UK National Child Mortality Database, we explore the emerging understanding that fatal food-triggered anaphylaxis may be much more of a respiratory catastrophe than the classic circulatory collapse we often picture in our heads. The findings are genuinely thought provoking. Many of the fatal paediatric cases reviewed showed overwhelming airway and breathing compromise long before cardiovascular collapse occurred, with deterioration happening frighteningly quickly in the prehospital phase. We work through the current Resuscitation Council UK and NICE guidance, look at where diagnostic confusion still exists, and discuss why early adrenaline absolutely remains the cornerstone of treatment. But we also explore whether our mental model of anaphylaxis needs updating, particularly when it comes to respiratory assessment, escalation and oxygenation strategies. We're also incredibly grateful to be joined by Ben McKenzie, who shares the devastating personal story behind the development of the AMAX4 approach and the lessons it holds for all of us managing critically unwell patients in the ED and prehospital environment. This is a really powerful episode about recognition, trajectory and reframing how we think about severe anaphylaxis. Once again we'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback either on the website or via X @TheResusRoom! Simon & Rob

Ben McKenzie (Everyone Is Lying to You for Money, Easy Money) is an actor, author, and outspoken cryptocurrency skeptic. Ben joins Armchair Expert to discuss growing up in a civically minded family in Austin, studying economics at the University of Virginia, and stumbling into acting success with early fame on an unnamed hit show. Ben and Dax talk about navigating imposter syndrome after overnight success, transitioning from acting into writing and directing, and what led him into investigating crypto markets during the pandemic. Ben explains why behavioral economics reveals how irrational people really are, how financial systems exploit trust and hype, and why the promise of “easy money” taps into something dangerously universal.Sign up now in the app or at grubhub.com/plus/golddays to unlock exclusive Gold Days deals.Check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds: https://www.allstate.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
President Donald Trump made a lot of promises when he took office for the second time. One of those promises included becoming the most pro-cryptocurrency president ever! (Probably because the Trump family is trying to make as much money as possible from the enterprise.) But the wheels appear to be falling off both Trump's crypto adventures and the industry itself. Though millions of Americans own crypto, Bitcoin isn't going to replace the dollar any time soon. To learn more about the crypto industry, who it's for, and where it's headed, we spoke with Ben McKenzie. He's an author, actor, and filmmaker who has been covering cryptocurrency for years. His new documentary "Everyone Is Lying To You For Money" centers on unmasking the cryptocurrency industry. And in headlines, the Washington Post found Iran has hit more U.S. military assets than reported, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick testifies before Congress about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and Stephen Colbert teases a possible 2028 presidential run.Show Notes: Check out Everyone Is Lying To You For Money – https://tinyurl.com/4apne3tp Call Congress – 202-224-3121 Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/y4y2e9jy What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcast Follow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/ For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Ben McKenzie became famous for playing bad boy Ryan Atwood in the hit 2003 drama, but he may end up being remembered for his work investigating and speaking out against the opaque crypto industry. Ben is the writer, director, and star of the new documentary, 'Everyone Is Lying To You For Money', which documents his years-long look into the scammy, fraudulent, and oftentimes criminal world of cryptocurrency. He met up with Mehdi in Washington D.C. to talk about his new film and what drove him to make it. Mehdi and Ben unpack the film's globetrotting story — from Miami, to El Salvador, to London — as Ben follows the (figurative) money. Ben explains what exactly cryptocurrency is and uncovers why its evangelists want you to buy it so badly. The two also discuss: How 'The O.C.' introduced an entire generation to class politics. Why Ben is supporting Brad Lander for Congress over Dan Goldman. If taking corporate PAC money should be a litmus test for Democrats. Crypto is back—new hype cycles, rising prices, and fresh promises that this time cryptocurrency is changing the financial system for good. But the questions haven't changed: is this innovation or just another wave of speculation, scams, and financial fraud? That's why we're revisiting this conversation with actor and author Ben McKenzie—whose bestselling book Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud and new documentary, Everyone is Lying to You For Money are once again fueling the debate over crypto's real impact. What started as curiosity became a deeper look at how the crypto boom blurred the line between investing and gambling—and what that reveals about an economy increasingly driven by speculation instead of real value. McKenzie joins Nick and Goldy to pull back the curtain on the hype, the believers, and the system that made it all possible. Ben McKenzie is an actor, author, and director best known for his roles on The O.C., Southland, and Gotham. A graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in economics and foreign affairs, he has emerged as a leading critic of the cryptocurrency industry. He is the co-author, with journalist Jacob Silverman, of Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, and has expanded that work into a documentary, Everyone is Lying to You For Money , examining the rise—and risks—of crypto. Trump has gone full “1984” with his claim that it's a good thing that the Strait of Hormuz is closed. He also says that he saved some Iranian women from being executed, which the regime in Tehran called “fake news.” It's a telling sign of the times when the public can't figure out whether the White House or the Iranian regime is lying. Hold on to your bonnets as we flash back in time to witness the ball – and the lead-up – from Sophie's perspective. Actor and author Ben McKenzie didn't set out to become one of crypto's fiercest critics—but when the pandemic hit and Hollywood shut down, his curiosity turned into a full-blown investigation. The result was the bestselling book, Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, a blistering exposé of the crypto craze as “casino capitalism” at its dumbest. In this episode, McKenzie joins Nick and Goldy to explain how the industry turned hype and libertarian fantasy into a trillion-dollar bubble, why the true believers won't let go, and how fake “innovation” and corporate lobbying are putting the entire financial system at risk. They dig into the cult psychology of crypto, the rise of legalized gambling as an addiction economy, and why letting corporations issue their own “money” could end in disaster. Ben McKenzie is an actor, author, and director best known for his roles on The O.C., Southland, and Gotham. He holds a degree in economics and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia. McKenzie has become one of the most prominent critics of the cryptocurrency industry, co-authoring the book Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud with journalist Jacob Silverman. Ben McKenzie not only survived the 00s but also the glare of the spotlight. The actor shot to fame as a troubled teenager in the mega-hit series The O.C., which debuted the same year as another teen drama, One Tree Hill. Ben and Sophia share stories about what it was like being young and dealing with fame on their respective hit shows. Ben also opens up about being terrified of being put in the 'teen actor' box, being confused with his character, and meeting his wife, Morena Baccarin, on The O.C. set but not remembering! Plus, Ben dishes about showing his 7-year-old daughter The O.C. and her reaction to the show, his childhood dream of being a football player and how he ended up acting instead, and what inspired him to write the book, "Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
