Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 102nd episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. I open with a complicated correction that involves my having mixed up Rachel Nichols and Elisabeth Harnois, the shows they were involved in, their connections to Joss Whedon productions and also cross connections through "Criminal Minds." This set covers discs 1826 to 1850 in my Classic Collection. For my Fuzzy Feature, from Discs 1849 and 1850, comments on the pilot episode of Matt Nix production "The Good Guys," along with my 12th ever "VideoFuzzy the Video" posted here: https://youtu.be/aT5HIqRBS50 I also traced Cross Connections turning up in this collection for Golden Threads Michael O'Neill and Stephen Weber, plus Tahmon Penniket, William B. Davis, Gary Anthony Williams, Erica Gimpel, Ally Walker, Marion Ross, Chrisotpher Lloyd, Scott Bakula, Fred Willard, Swoosie Kurtz, Allison Janney, Terry O'Quinn, Marilyn Manson, Mitch Pileggi, Jon Waters, Bob Clendinen, Neil Patrick Harris, Molly Shannon, John Michael Higgins, Idina Menzel, Judy Greer, Kelsey Grammer, Saul Rubinek, Rachel York, Brent Sexton, Kevin "Repo" Thomas, M.C. Gainey, Kate Vernon and Wade Williams. Plus from "Mid-Century Modern" and elsewhere, I recognize my latest Golden Thread: Bruno Amato. In my Classic Collection, I encountered a few disc errors, suggesting my current DVD player may be wearing out. In the meantime, lots of high-drama season finales in this set. Comments on "Grey's Anatomy," "Fringe," "The Simpsons," "Chuck," "Breaking Bad," and a discussion on the Weeping Angels in "Doctor Who." In Old Business, I track down a musical comedy clip of Martin Short listing celebrities and other notables who refuse to appear on "The Late Show with David Letterman." I'd archived a portion of that one to disc 225 but hadn't seen the first half in perhaps ever until I found it on YouTube in a clip compilation of Martin Short appearances hosted by David Letterman and Paul Schaffer. I posted it here, cued to the 22-minute mark: https://bit.ly/3G52J9e In What I've Been Watching, comments on the Vernal Theatre's outstanding production of "Kiss Me Kate," the second season premiere of "Doctor Who" on Disney+, the first season of "Continuum" and pilot episodes of "Millennium," "Profiler" and "Mid-Century Modern." SPREADING THE WORD! "VideoFuzzy: The Video - Celebrating 100 Episodes!" is posted at https://youtu.be/eWfcCDiOZ2I. Please share as you're able to with anyone you feel might enjoy this production. It's a celebration of cinema, of culture, and of the Hanks family this week on the Movie Squad pod. Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo reunite to give Breakfast host Pamela Boland a double-dose of Hanks, with two new cinema releases starring the famous father, Tom, and his son (no, not Chet). First up, Tristan reviews Here, which sees Tom Hanks reunite with his Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis and co-star Robin Wright for an unusual adaptation of a graphic novel that spans centuries while focusing squarely on one single camera angle of a lounge room. Then, Simon previews the British Film Festival, specifically looking at the new Aisling Bea romcom And Mrs, in which she plays a recently widowed fiancee who pushes forward with a wedding to the deceased (played by Colin Hanks). Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat with Madeline Bates, the new/returning Film Curator at Perth Festival, all about the most exciting titles set to premiere at the Somerville Auditorium over the next few months. You can take a look at the full program here, ahead of the first film's debut on 25 November: Didi.

Meghan Markle made a glamorous solo appearance at the LA Children's Hospital gala, wearing a striking red Carolina Herrera dress. The Duchess of Sussex had previously donned this gown in 2021 at a gala in New York, but this time Prince Harry was noticeably absent. The event, hosted by Kaley Cuoco, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Colin Hanks, saw Meghan engaging warmly with children, smiling and chatting throughout the evening. While she was flying solo, Harry has been attending a number of engagements without her as well, including trips to New York, the UK, and South Africa.Meghan said: "The work that they do otherworldly. And I think from my standpoint as a mother no one wants to be in a position where you need to go to a place like this - but if you have to, the best place in the world you could go would be Children's Hospital LA. Some thought Meghan seemed uncomfortable at the event. Body language expert Judi James tells FEMAIL: "For a confident woman who is used to cameras and red carpets she acts grateful to see and join her friend here. The body language ritual that she follows seems to be deliberate signalling of her current state as Harry is off on his solo tour."Meghan performs signals of coyness and even shyness plus a subliminal desire to have someone take over the lead from Harry, as though she is somehow lost without him on the red carpet or wanting to suggest she is feeling more vulnerable and girlishly playful than usual."Meghan's red dress was not warmly reviewed. One social media user called it” the most hideously ugly dress. And she wore it to meet with donors and children."Unlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! Little-seen but worthy, the 1985 John Candy comedy 'Summer Rental' is due for a little revisit and respect! On the news of a forthcoming and hopefully definitive John Candy documentary directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, I stumbled across this film (which I'd never even heard of) and found myself gleefully experiencing an expertly-cast superior comedy of its era with a typically warm, truthful, harder-than-it-looks John Candy performance at its center. It's a pleasant surprise of a great family movie and I hope you'll see it out!

Darrin Roberts grew up in Southern California with a “Kevin Arnold-Wonder Years” type upbringing. After a neighbor suggested his mother take her 3 year old to a recently released “war movie”, he became obsessed with all things cinema. After getting his degree at USC's School of Cinematic Arts he began working on a series of music film projects as both a camera operator and a film editor. In May of 2014 an Oscar winning producer suggested he meet with Colin Hanks and Sean Stuart regarding a documentary about the rise and fall of Tower Records, a film the two had spent several years making. As a customer of the El Toro Tower Records, it was a dream job. On today's episode Darrin walks us through much of his process working on “All Things Must Pass” and gives us some insights as to what made the film, what didn't make it and why, the relationship between a film editor and a director, how much film and audio he waded through to cut the “Tower Doc” down to a tight, cohesive 95 minute film, the aftermath and the opportunities presented to him since completing that project. We also spend a nice chunk of time talking about Darrin's latest project “Thriller 40”, a documentary he edited with famed music critic Nelson George directing. “Thriller 40” sheds all of Michael Jackson's personal baggage (hard to do) and focuses on the early to mid-80's when Michael and Quincy Jones were at the top of their creative powers. An interesting through line to the film is the Grammy Awards virtual snub of “Off The Wall” and how it drove Michael Jackson to create “Thriller”. Like “All Things Must Pass”, “Thriller 40” is a tight 90 minute story that tells a fascinating behind the scenes story of a cultural zeitgeist, the likes of which we may never see again.
In this episode we discuss teasing your hair, our colleagues from Ned's Declassified bringing shame on the pod community, the razor sharp line between a Vanity Fair photo and Sears, our new Elizabeth Holmes-ian business venture, the death of the big goofy comedy, how no one goes to the theatre to see bad movies anymore, the evolution of Emma Stone, "giving ned" (puke), crochet toques, having strong feelings about Kat Dennings, THE Anna Faris voice that rocked the nation, love interest dudes that have no desirable traits, the need to stop using farm animals in pranks, the group effect of this makeover, Rumer Willis' breakout scene, the "unexpected mutual learning" tool in a writer's toolbox, the baby scene and SO MUCH MORE!!!

27 years after becoming a classic dark comedy that earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Oscar wins for Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (best original screenplay) and Frances McDormand (best actress), "Fargo" is back for its fifth season as an anthology series on FX and Hulu. Showrunner Noah Hawley's latest installment of the show that premiered in 2014 presents another standalone story that remains connected with the other seasons as well as the original movie. Season 5, which premieres Nov. 21, features Jon Hamm, Juno Temple and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the latest A-list actors to join the revolving cast that has included Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman and Colin Hanks (season 1); Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kieran Culkin, Patrick Wilson and Ted Danson (season 2); Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon (season 3); and Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman (season 4). While the first three season received generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences, the fourth season was mixed as the show was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% score from critics but a weaker 54% from audience ratings. So how good is season 5? While we keep things spoiler-free, co-host Bruce Miller screened half of the episodes and not only thinks it's the best show we'll get for the remainder of 2023, but it's at least the second best "Fargo" season to date. Miller has interviews with the three big stars as well as costume designer Carol Case and makeup department head Gail Kennedy. New York-based musician and America's Sweetheart Nick Miller joins to discuss the underseen 150-minute Extended Cut of Tom Hanks's directorial debut, 'That Thing You Do!'. It's a meandering, expansive version of the film that takes the original cut's effervescent (if slight) shot of pop nostalgia and, at its best, aims for comparisons to great surveyors of cinematic Americana like Robert Altman & Jonathan Demme (who serves as producer on this film). We discuss the two versions of the film, their differences, and how the Extended Cut showcases even further Tom Hanks's singular knowledge of the era and its musical landscape. Then, we talk about the eponymous tune, an infectious earworm written by the late Adam Schlesinger which took on a life of its own as a charting hit single and was nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar in 1997. We also discuss the film as part and parcel with Tom Hanks's decade-long fixation with postwar America and the Greatest Generation's sense of national purpose, how the movie gets right many of the intricacies of songwriting and band dynamics, and make a plea to the 300+ artists (including Squeeze and They Might Be Giants) who submitted versions of "That Thing You Do!" to finally release their recordings. We're closing the yearbook on 2018 with a criminally underappreciated TV series, Life in Pieces. This show contained a fantastic cast including James Brolin, Dianne Wiest, Colin Hanks, and Betsy Brandt, among others. And if you liked Modern Family, you would be sure to love this too. We break down the cast, a classic episode, and much more. While fantastic, the series only ran 3 1/2 seasons. Giff, who chose this one, felt it was too short of a run. So we decided to draft our favorite TV series that ended too soon. Who was the lucky one to get first pick, and therefore, Freaks and Geeks? Colin Hanks knows there are public perceptions of him that are tricky to navigate. For one, the man known as America's Dad is his actual dad. There's also the fact that people have a hard time seeing him in roles other than The Nice Guy. And then there's the way people still think of him as a young man even as he enters middle age with children of his own. Colin and Marc talk about the mindset he's had to put in place to feel at ease with himself, much of which he had to absorb as he processed the loss of his mother.
