The new leader of Rochester’s Destination Medical Center is optimistic about the new year — and the organization’s ability to position the city as an attractive place for remote workers. Patrick Seeb stepped into the DMC’s executive director role at the start of 2021. He’s taking over for Lisa Clarke, who retired after spending six years leading the organization. The DMC is a 20-year project to convert Rochester into a global hub for health and wellness. This, the DMC hopes, will draw development, investors, startups and entrepreneurs to the southern Minnesota city. It’s also the largest private-public economic initiative in the state’s history, according to the DMC. Seeb most recently served as the organization’s director of economic development and placemaking. Before that, he was executive director of the Saint Paul Riverfront Corp., responsible for the multibillion-dollar transformation of downtown St. Paul. Like any other city, Rochester has struggled with job losses and fewer visitors due to the ongoing pandemic. Still, Seeb said that the city is doing better than most thanks to the Mayo Clinic. Seeb speaks with reporter Kelly Busche about how leaders are assessing the community’s changing needs as they position Rochester as an essential city for workers and travelers in a post-pandemic world.

To a big extent, Lisa Clarke has been the name and face of the Destination Medical Center initiative in Rochester. Now getting ready for retirement, Clarke has served as executive director of the DMC Economic Development Agency since 2014. The nonprofit agency works with the city of Rochester and others to develop and implement DMC’s mission: a 20-year, $5.6 billion development initiative designed to “position Minnesota as a global center for the highest-quality medical care and to generate high-value jobs, new tax revenue and businesses.” Clarke led the effort to get state funding for the DMC. In 2013, a total of $585 million was allocated by state statute for the initiative, including $424 million from the state, $128 million from the city of Rochester and $33 million from Olmsted County. Under her watch, the Mayo Clinic and private developers have invested nearly $1 billion in Rochester development projects, including two hotels, housing and the $300 million business and research complex known as One Discovery Square. Clarke will soon hand over the leadership baton to Patrick Seeb, the agency’s current director of economic development and placemaking and former executive director of the Saint Paul Riverfront Corp. Her retirement is effective Jan. 4, 2021. In the following interview, Clarke talks about her time with the DMC Economic Development Agency, the initiative’s formative years and other topics.

This week we want to encourage you to work with molds. Molds are fun, you can take them of almost anything. You can use polymer clay to make a mold, or silicone rubber, or SuperElasticlay (a sculpey product). I mix superelasticlay with premo, about half and half, to get a flexible mold, and Ilysa prefers a hard mold so she just uses clay. You must bake your polymer clay molds before using them! Be sure to return next week for our video demo. We invite you to listen to our discussion with Lisa Clarke. She operates a Polymer Clay (mostly) bookstore, a blog, and her own radio podcast at her site, www.polkadotcreations.com. She also has an Etsy.com shop for her own polymer clay creations. Lisa is an great person with interesting experiences to share. We hope you enjoy our interview with her as much as we did. Don't forget- the Call for Creativity starts this month. We encourage you to try out translucent clay and effects, using a fall palette of golds, reds, oranges, and turning-greens (think leaves). If you need more direction, feel free to create a votive candleholder. If you crave an open challenge, make anything you like- using translucent clay. Then load it up on the forum board or our flickr account, and later in the month I'll be making a collage out of them to display here for everyone to see.
