Submit your application now. Episode Summary In this episode, I'm sharing why I changed my mind about creatine. For years, I didn't supplement with it. I eat an animal-based diet, and I felt like I could get what I needed through food. But my perspective has changed as I've gotten older and become even more focused on building and preserving muscle for life. This episode is not about hype. It's about goals. I want muscle to be a priority for the rest of my life because muscle is not just about appearance. It is a metabolic asset, a longevity asset, a functional asset, and a resilience asset. And when I revisited the human data on creatine through that lens, I changed my mind. In this episode, I break down: why muscle matters so much for blood sugar, metabolism, resilience, and aging why creatine is one of the most researched supplements in sports nutrition what the human studies show about creatine and greater gains in strength and lean mass when combined with resistance training why that same edge matters even more as we age what the research suggests about creatine and the brain, especially under stress and sleep deprivation the truth about water retention and why intramuscular water is very different from feeling bloated or puffy common reasons some people experience GI discomfort why I prefer CreaPure creatine monohydrate from a purity and quality standpoint practical dosing, safety, and what to know about labs and creatinine A Few Key Takeaways Creatine doesn't build muscle instead of training. It helps you get more adaptation from training. When combined with resistance training, creatine can help support greater gains in strength and lean mass than training alone. At 35, creatine may help you train harder and build a little more strength and lean mass. At 55 and beyond, that same edge matters more, because the alternative is not just slower progress — it's accelerated decline, frailty, and loss of independence. The water retention associated with creatine is typically inside the muscle, not the kind of puffiness most people mean when they say they feel bloated. For most people, a simple daily dose of 5 grams of creatine monohydrate is a very practical place to start. Mentioned in This Episode Momentous Creatine (5g CreaPure creatine monohydrate): https://go.shopmy.us/p-46949966 Listener Giveaway I'm also giving away the Momentous creatine I mentioned in this episode, which uses 5 grams of CreaPure creatine monohydrate per serving. Final Thought Do not underestimate the value of muscle. Muscle is not just about how you look. It helps support blood sugar regulation, insulin sensitivity, physical capability, recovery, resilience, and independence. That's why this conversation matters, and that's why I changed my mind about creatine. DEFENSE Foundations Scholarship Application If you've been thinking about joining DEFENSE Foundations, this may be your opportunity. The scholarship application is open now, and if support, structure, and accountability are what you need, I strongly encourage you to apply.

In this edition of Long Run Archives, Finn Melanson is joined by Brett Hornig and Jeff Colt for a wide-ranging conversation about some of the biggest debates circulating in trail and ultrarunning right now.We begin with a viral moment from the sport: Charlie Lawrence being called out to run a backyard ultra. Could a 100K record holder actually threaten the backyard ultra world record, or is the discipline too specialized for that kind of crossover? The group discusses what determines success in the backyard format and why the event continues to fascinate runners across disciplines.Next, we explore a provocative question making the rounds online: are elite trail runners boring? Are influencers better storytellers than professional athletes, or is that narrative missing the point? Along the way we discuss historical tensions between performance and storytelling in the sport and what audiences actually respond to.In the second half of the episode, we unpack two recent race controversies:• Ultra Trail Snowdonia's major course change after registration opened• The possibility that the historic JFK 50 Mile could move from its traditional course due to funding disputesWhat responsibility do race organizers have when circumstances force major changes after runners have already committed? Finally, we play a round of Overreaction / Underreaction, reacting to statements like:• Molly Seidel is already a Western States podium contender• Jen Lichter could enter the top echelon of the sport with a Western States win• Crowdfunded prize purses may surpass traditional race payouts• Kilian Jornet could still win both Western States and UTMB in the same seasonPartners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelKodiak Cakes - my favorite oatmeal and pancakes Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order Support the show

View This Week's Show NotesStart Your 7-Day Trial to Mobility CoachJoin Our Free Weekly Newsletter: The AmbushWhat if the biggest predictor of dementia isn't your genes — but your metabolic health? In this episode, neuroscientist and performance coach Dr. Tommy Wood reveals why blood sugar regulation and blood pressure are more powerful predictors of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline than amyloid plaques or even genetics like ApoE4.For decades, Alzheimer's has been framed as either a genetic lottery or the inevitable buildup of amyloid in the brain. But emerging research shows that metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance, and vascular health may play a far greater role in determining long-term brain outcomes.Instead of focusing on fear, this conversation delivers a practical blueprint for building cognitive reserve and “cognitive headroom” — the brain's ability to stay resilient, adaptable, and high-performing as you age. You'll learn why crossword puzzles aren't enough, how high-intensity exercise and resistance training stimulate brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF), why lactate may act like “Miracle-Gro” for your neurons, and how to interpret early warning signs like subjective brain fog. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeWhy Alzheimer's isn't just about amyloid plaquesThe powerful link between blood sugar and cognitive declineHow genetics (like ApoE4) increase risk — but don't seal your fateWhat “cognitive headroom” means and how to build itWhy high-intensity exercise may act as Miracle-Gro for the brainThe surprising role of resistance training in brain healthWhat subjective brain fog might be telling youHow menopause affects cognition — and what's reversibleWhy boredom and focus matter more than we thinkThe kinds of skills you should keep practicing as you ageFor women navigating perimenopause and menopause, Dr. Wood explains what cognitive changes are hormonally driven, what's reversible, and how to protect long-term brain health.Whether your goal is preventing Alzheimer's disease, improving focus and processing speed, or becoming a cognitive “superager,” this episode provides evidence-based strategies to help you build a brain that is robust, metabolically healthy, and built to last.Key Highlights: (00:00) – Brain Health & Cognitive Longevity Intro(00:35) – Brain Evolution & Survival Mechanisms(02:53) – Diabetes & Alzheimer's Disease Link(07:31) – Genetic Risk & Dementia Family History(11:32) – Expanding Brain Capacity & Headroom(15:08) – Cognitive Reserve & Brain Resilience(19:55) – Preventing Age-Related Cognitive Decline(23:00) – Exercise Data for Brain Health(26:16) – Best Exercises for Cognitive Function(35:11) – Amyloid Plaques & Alzheimer's Pathology(38:00) – Amyloid-Targeting Drugs & Treatments(40:31) – Subjective Cognitive Decline Measures(45:04) – Testing & Measuring Brain Performance(49:58) – Menopause & Female Brain Health(56:10) – Aging Brain, Wisdom & Intelligence(1:05:00) – Cognitive Processing Speed & Aging(1:07:07) – Benefits of Boredom for the Brain(1:12:17) – Book Recommendations for Mental GrowthConnect with Dr. Tommy WoodWebsite | Substack | InstagramPre-Order The Stimulated Mind for tons of extra perks!Huge thanks to our sponsors, Momentous, Vitality, and LMNT.

What questions are tugging at you right now, and how might exploring the answers help you live and perform with more clarity? We're back with a special edition of the Finding Mastery podcast: another Ask Me Anything episode, built from the deep, thoughtful questions submitted by our community. In this AMA, Michael Gervais is joined by Jeff Byers, former NFL player, Co-Founder and CEO of Momentous, and longtime friend of Finding Mastery. Jeff has built something very special with Momentous, a supplement company grounded in transparency and integrity in an industry that can be full of noise and misinformation. He often says trust is earned, and he takes that responsibility personally. His relentless approach to mastery, both for himself and for the team he's building at Momentous—makes him an ideal co-host to help Mike wrestle with questions across a wide range of topics… how to perform with more clarity, how to work skillfully with strong emotions, and how to build a life that feels aligned with what matters most.Key insights we explored:Shift from perfection to purpose… why “the constant pursuit of perfectionism” is a setup for burnout, and how purpose changes the whole frame.Downregulating the nervous system… practical ways to move from sympathetic “on” to parasympathetic “rest and digest,” including breath, gaze, laughter, touch, nature, and intentionally induced recovery.Anger and emotional skill… how to feel anger without outward harm or inward collapse, and why the goal is to build the capacity to be “unbothered.”Loneliness and connection… why loneliness can surge when you leave familiar people and routines, and how “time-boxing” the feeling can help you train it instead of letting it bleed through the entire day.Reflection when life is full… how to build a sustainable rhythm for inner work, from 90-second practices to scheduled retreats, and why scheduling and celebration matter. If you find yourself wrestling with perfectionism, emotional spillover, loneliness, or a life that won't slow down, this AMA is a strong reminder that mastery is trained—one choice, one practice, one reset at a time.__________________________________Links & ResourcesSubscribe to our Youtube Channel for more conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and wellbeing: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors! Dr. Kathryn Paige Harden is a psychologist and behavioural geneticist, Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and an author. Are people born evil, or does evil emerge from circumstance? While we tend to blame genetics for humanity's darkest behaviors, science and psychology suggest a far more complicated picture. If biology, environment, and experience all shape behavior, how should society judge, or punish, those who may never have had full control over who they became? Expect to learn what Kathryn learned from her first 4 million-person study, what the evolutionary roots of aggression, dominance, and impulsivity are, if there is a heritability of antisocial behaviour, why punishment is a useful tool for responding to harm, what Kathryn makes of the looksmaxxing movement, and much more… Sponsors: See discounts for all the products I use and recommend: https://chriswillx.com/deals Get a free bottle of D3K2, an AG1 Welcome Kit, and more when you first subscribe at https://ag1.info/modernwisdom New pricing since recording: Function is now just $365, plus get $25 off at https://functionhealth.com/modernwisdom Get a Free Sample Pack of LMNT's most popular flavours with your first purchase at https://drinklmnt.com/modernwisdom Get 35% off your first subscription on the best supplements from Momentous at https://livemomentous.com/modernwisdom Extra Stuff: Get my free reading list of 100 books to read before you die: https://chriswillx.com/books Try my productivity energy drink Neutonic: https://neutonic.com/modernwisdom Check out Kathryn's book: https://tinyurl.com/msd53w6s Episodes You Might Enjoy: #577 - David Goggins - This Is How To Master Your Life: https://tinyurl.com/43hv6y59 #712 - Dr Jordan Peterson - How To Destroy Your Negative Beliefs: https://tinyurl.com/2rtz7avf #700 - Dr Andrew Huberman - The Secret Tools To Hack Your Brain: https://tinyurl.com/3ccn5vkp - Get In Touch: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chriswillx Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/chriswillx YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/modernwisdompodcast Email: https://chriswillx.com/contact - Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Max King reflects on his experience at the Barkley Marathons and why he now views it as a multi-year project rather than a one-off attempt. He breaks down the realities of navigation, collaboration, foot care, cold exposure, and the mental calculus required to decide whether to continue deeper into the course. In the second half of the conversation, Max discusses where he sits in his career at 45, how his relationship with competition has evolved, and what it means to keep racing while letting go of certain expectations. He talks about durability, motivation, adapting training as an aging athlete, shifting sponsorship dynamics, and the balance between performance and adventure.Partners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/singletrack)Janji - premium trail running apparel (https://janji.com/pages/singletrack)Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order (https://livemomentous.com/) Support the show

We discuss why it affects body composition differently, how GPS navigation impacts cognition, and why optimization culture can undermine resilience. Plus, he challenges my assumptions about comfort zones. Michael's insights are practical, contrarian, and rooted in science and experience. Enjoy! Charlie Houpert is an entrepreneur and YouTuber. Why does life tend to teach its hardest lessons just as we think we've arrived? We chase the goals, build the lifestyle, tick the boxes, only to discover that emptiness and insecurity still follow us. Ancient philosophers and writers wrestled with this long before we did, encoding the problem into myths that have endured for thousands of years. So what were they trying to show us? And how can those old stories help us reclaim a sense of identity when we feel most lost? Expect to learn what Charlie's personal growth journey has been over the past few years, why people feel so disconnected to success when they achieve it, how to balance societal and spiritual fulfillment, what the lessons of history and the power of mythology can teach us about modern problems, how charisma led Charlie to a spiritual breakthrough, what the future of Charisma on Command will look like and much more… Sponsors: See discounts for all the products I use and recommend: https://chriswillx.com/deals New pricing since recording: Function is now just $365, plus get $25 off at https://functionhealth.com/modernwisdom Get a Free Sample Pack of LMNT's most popular flavours with your first purchase at https://drinklmnt.com/modernwisdom Get 35% off your first subscription on the best supplements from Momentous at https://livemomentous.com/modernwisdom Get up to $350 off the Pod 5 at https://eightsleep.com/modernwisdom Extra Stuff: Get my free reading list of 100 books to read before you die: https://chriswillx.com/books Try my productivity energy drink Neutonic: https://neutonic.com/modernwisdom Episodes You Might Enjoy: #577 - David Goggins - This Is How To Master Your Life: https://tinyurl.com/43hv6y59 #712 - Dr Jordan Peterson - How To Destroy Your Negative Beliefs: https://tinyurl.com/2rtz7avf #700 - Dr Andrew Huberman - The Secret Tools To Hack Your Brain: https://tinyurl.com/3ccn5vkp - Get In Touch: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chriswillx Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/chriswillx YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/modernwisdompodcast Email: https://chriswillx.com/contact - Learn more about your ad choices. View This Week's Show NotesStart Your 7-Day Trial to Mobility CoachJoin Our Free Weekly Newsletter: The AmbushIn a world obsessed with “optimal” routines, Dr. Rachel Pojednic cuts through the noise with a grounded, evidence-based approach to longevity and performance. This conversation is a reset for anyone overwhelmed by conflicting health advice, anxious about wearable scores, or stuck chasing perfect protocols that collapse under real life stress. You'll learn what the science actually supports, what's still uncertain, and how to build a simple, sustainable health strategy using the biggest levers first—movement, nutrition, sleep, stress, and relationships—before you bother with the “fun stuff.” Dr. Pojednic also shares what she's learned studying wellness therapies in industry and academia, why most people misunderstand Zone 2, and what to track if you want a clearer picture of your health over time. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeWhy “protocol life” is making people more confused (and often less healthy)The difference between big levers (high impact) and little levers (fine-tuning) for longevityWhat to track that's actually useful: A1C trends, fasting glucose, lipids, resting heart rateWhy wearable metrics can conflict—and how that can create anxiety and false certaintyA clearer, non-hype explanation of HRV and why “low” isn't always “bad”What Zone 2 is really for (and why it isn't a magical mitochondrial hack)How to think about supplement safety, including third-party testing and the “lead in protein powder” scareA simple 7–30 day “one change” experiment to build habits that survive real lifeIf you've ever felt like you're “failing” health because you can't follow a perfect routine—or you've been pulled in six directions by influencers, devices, and contradictory advice—this episode gives you something rare: a sane framework. What if the fueling strategy you've followed for years is no longer the one that best supports your performance? In Episode 131 of The Eat for Endurance Podcast, I'm joined by elite ultrarunner and coach Zach Bitter for a thoughtful conversation about his experience with both low and high carb fueling. After following a low carb diet for 14 years, including when he broke the World and American Records in the 100-mile distance, he decided to change course and try high carb fueling. It's been 8 months now of experimenting with more carbs, and so far, he's had a very positive experience.Zach and I discuss:Why he originally went low carb as a younger ultrarunnerWhat his particular flavor of low carb fueling looked like in practiceWhat motivated him to dramatically increase his carb intake last yearHow high carb fueling has influenced his recent training and racingWhy you shouldn't make one single diet your whole identityThe importance of curiosity and flexibility for long-term health and performanceThis episode is full of nuance, and underscores the fact that there is no one-size-fits-all diet. As Zach says in the episode, don't be afraid to try something new, because if it doesn't work out, you can always go back to what you were doing before!

Gaslighting isn't just a buzzword — it's a real communication pattern that quietly distorts reality and leaves you questioning yourself. In this episode, I break down the three must-know signs you're being gaslit, the subtle conversation shifts that give it away, and exactly what to say in the moment to stay grounded and in control. I also flip the lens inward and share how to recognize if you're unintentionally gaslighting someone else — and how to stop it before it becomes a pattern. “Healthy, happy, and balanced athletes are the ones that make it across the finish line again and again throughout a long career and leave a legacy.” — Jessie DigginsJessie Diggins is currently competing in her fourth and final Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. I interviewed her back in January 2021, just one week after her historic Tour de Ski win on some of the same Italian mountains she's skiing on now. Since our recording, Jessie has become the most accomplished cross-country skier from the US, with 4 Olympic medals (she won her 4th one today!), 3 World Cup overall titles, 7 World Championship medals, and countless other accolades. Even though it's no longer Covid times (thank goodness), this powerful conversation about fueling for joy, resilience, and longevity in sport remains just as relevant and important today. ---In Episode 37, I'm honored to be joined by cross-country skier and Olympic gold medalist Jessie Diggins. She is not only dominating her sport, but also using her platform to promote healthy fueling, body positivity, and the importance of enjoying food without restriction. Many fans first fell in love with Jessie during the 2018 Winter Olympics, where she and Kikkan Randall won the first-ever American gold medal in cross-country skiing. At the time of this interview, Jessie had also just won the Tour de Ski, becoming the first American to claim the title. In this conversation, Jessie challenges the idea that leanness leads to success, reminding athletes that “Skinny doesn't win races. Fast wins races.” She emphasizes that fueling well, prioritizing health, and embracing joy are essential to reaching the start line ready to race.

When someone comes on strong early, it can feel like intimacy—but it's often just intensity. In this episode, Sabrina breaks down love bombing, future faking, and why fast-moving connections activate dopamine and attachment wounds rather than real emotional safety. She explains what's actually happening in your brain when chemistry feels overwhelming and why those relationships tend to crash just as fast. You'll learn the most common signs of love bombing, why stable connection can feel boring at first, and how anxious attachment keeps people hooked on the high. Sabrina also shares the Reality Check Pause, a practical tool to slow down, spot red flags early, and build relationships based on consistency, trust, and choice—not urgency or fear of being alone. If you're struggling with breakups or repeating unhealthy relationship cycles, this episode breaks down why heartbreak hurts so deeply and how healing actually begins. If you're ready to slow down, trust your instincts, and break your old dating patterns, the Healthy Relationship Foundations Course walks you through it step-by-step HERE! If you're serious about changing your dating patterns instead of repeating them, the Art of Going Slow course helps you unlearn urgency, regulate your nervous system, and build real connection without rushing, chasing, or abandoning yourself HERE! This episode got raw. In Episode 2 of our series, we sit down as husband and wife and say the words that made us most vulnerable: we don't need each other. What started as an honest conversation turned emotional—tears, tension, disagreements, and a level of vulnerability we've never shared publicly. We talk about breaking free from co-dependency, redefining partnership, and what it actually means to choose each other instead of needing each other to survive. We'd love to hear your thoughts—
Sona takes her shoes off for the 7th time and talks with Rick about stuff.
#914. You may think you know how American Idol works… but Gabby Barrett explains how the audition process actually goes. This week on Off The Vine, Gabby takes us behind the scenes of Idol in a way you've probably never heard before — from how she was really discovered, to what happens before you ever stand in front of the judges, to competing on the show while falling for her now-husband.After Idol, we get into the song no label wanted… before it changed her life forever and suddenly everyone started calling. We also talk about what tour life looks like with three kids, how she writes heartbreak songs from a happy marriage, and how a John Mayer quote shaped why she never reveals who her songs are about.AND yes — there's an embarrassingly honest confession you won't see coming.Trust us, this is one of the good ones ;) (get it?).If you're LOVING this podcast, please follow and leave a rating and review below! We spend so much time waiting for the “perfect moment” to speak up — but the truth is, that moment rarely comes. In this episode, I break down why delaying hard conversations only creates bigger problems, how to recognize when now is the right time, and a simple framework to help you decide when to speak and when to pause. You'll learn the difference between a better time and a perfect time (spoiler: one doesn't exist), plus a golden rule that can save you from saying something you'll regret. If there's a conversation you've been putting off, this episode is for you. *BONUS* see if you can spot the nugget at the start of this episode before we dive in
