In his new book, Tafolla Toro: Three Years of Fear (2019), Lorenzo Gomez III reaches back in time to share stories of his turbulent, traumatic, and often violent middle school years in one of San Antonio’s most crime-riddled neighborhoods. This is episode 272 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Lorenzo opens up to reveal the fear, anxiety, and hopelessness he felt as a teenager and how those forces shaped his life until he began taking steps as an adult to improve his mental health. Alternating between shocking stories from his youth and letters written to his 12-year-old self, Lorenzo shows young people how to retake the battle of their mind by dealing with what is true and dismantling the lies that lead to self-deception. In Lorenzo’s journey, readers will see someone who understands what they feel, knows what they’re going through, and is standing up to tell them: Decide today that you are worthy. Lorenzo Gomez III overcame his mental health obstacles to become a proud participant in the transformation of the city he loves—San Antonio. He’s the chairman of Geekdom, Texas’s largest coworking space, the co-founder of the 80/20 Foundation and Tech Bloc, and has served on the board of several non-profits, including SA2020 and City Education Partners.  Lorenzo is also the author of The Cilantro Diaries, which quickly became a bestseller (and required reading at Texas A&M) when it was published in 2017.  Thanks for listening. Lorenzo Gomez III began working in customer service as a teenager, more eager to earn experience than a paycheck. As a produce clerk in a grocery store, he realized job satisfaction was more than having his picture displayed above the cilantro bin. Driven to advance his work life with little college experience, Lorenzo utilized valuable lessons from his entry-level jobs to catapult him into high-impact positions. Having gained insight throughout his career journey, he advises young adults that fulfilling work and career advancement come from learning from others, understanding how business really works, and knowing how to thrive in any work environment. Serving as CEO of Geekdom, the largest coworking space in Texas, and as cofounder of the 80/20 Foundation, a philanthropic organization, he puts best practices to use, collaborating with a diverse network of professionals to fortify growth of a tech district in downtown San Antonio--an ecosystem he helped create. As a tenacious team player and technologist with a passion for entrepreneurship, Lorenzo is paying it forward by sharing his on-the-job experiences so that young adults can learn and understand how complex business principles can be observed and applied in the most unlikely places.
