The panel of experts discusses the fallout for the US economy, states, and municipalities from the recent deal to raise the federal debt ceiling. Our panel of experts includes Matt Fabian, partner, Municipal Market Analytics; Marcia Howard, executive director, Federal Funds Information for States; Annie Linskey, white house reporter, the Wall Street Journal; Vikram Rai, managing director and head of the municipal strategy group, Citigroup; and Torsten Slok, chief economist, Apollo Global Management. Notable Quotes: “The problem that this debt crisis identified is that talking about cutting spending has revealed a field of landmines, even for Republicans who got to office to cut spending, and find themselves now unable to… If we can't cut spending, we have to raise taxes to make up for that spending” - Matt Fabian “The way to avoid [future debt ceiling crises] is to have Congress change the law they created in the first place, that requires this debt ceiling dance every few years...” - Annie Linskey “This drama is going to play out again in 2025… Once the US debt defaults, it will set a very unhealthy precedent.” - Vikram Rai “From the financial market perspective, [the debt ceiling debate] is something that is self-inflicted, and something that obviously is creating a lot of volatility…” - Torsten Slok “While we believed that the original legislation paved the way for a very smooth process with incentives to get things done, now we've come to believe that recent developments have unraveled that agreement, and that the months ahead are going to be very perilous, complicated, and politically fraught.” - Marcia Howard Be sure to subscribe to Special Briefing to stay up to date on the world of public finance. ADAPT REVOLUTION! Is your weekly antidote to hate, greed, and ableism, where the D-Word is Disability. In the 4th episode, we talk about foundations. Ideally, we want this to be a video podcast, with ASL interpretation, captions, and transcripts for every episode. We will be working to make that happen. We want the show to be as accessible as possible and bring the community together. Today, we are featuring a comedy routine by Josh Blue, called "The Perks of Being Disabled," a speech by Marcia Howard at a labor rights gathering in Minneapolis on May 1st, 2023 (Happy May Day!!!!), and a moving music performance of "Someday We'll Linger in the Sun" by Gaelynn Lea. We build our true foundations when we are brave enough to bring our brilliance and talents fully into the world. Today, we wanted to highlight a couple of our favorite disabled artists and their work. Intro music is "Break My Soul" by Beyoncé. Closing music is "Blue Lights" by Jorja Smith. Today on Sojourner Truth: On this 2nd anniversary of the death of George Floyd we explore what has and has not changed to address police brutality of black lives, in Minnesota and nationwide. President Biden has just signed an executive order to address police misconduct but does it really have any impact on abusive police actions? We discuss this with our panelists Tristan Taylor, co-founder of the Minnesota-based organization Detroit Will Breath, an integrated, youth-led, militant organization fighting against police brutality and systemic racism in Detroit. Our other panelists joining us for the hour are teacher and Minnesota-based activist Marcia Howard and #BLM member and PhD student and founder of the Tacoma Action collective, Jaleesa Trapp. And for our Earth Minute today, we receive an update on air pollution.

Today on Sojourner Truth: Alarm is growing among Democrats about what they are calling a threat to U.S. democracy. The spate of voter suppression legislation sweeping the nation. Those most impacted are the Democratic Party's most loyal supporters: Black voters. Not since the Jim Crow Era, before the successes of the Civil Rights movement, have many witnessed such attacks on the right to vote. What's going on? We speak with Barbara Arnwine, a veteran civil rights and human rights leader and advocate. She is known for her work protecting the right to vote. Crisis in Israel: is there one? If so, will it have any impact on the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict? A key vote is coming up this Sunday, on whether to approve a new governing coalition that could mean the end of the regime of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. From what some are calling a civil war within Israel to the recent war between Israel and Palestinians that left 256 Palestinians (including 66 children dead) and in Israel 13 people were killed (including 2 children). Our guest is Phyllis Bennis, who directs the New Internationalism Project at The Institute for Policy Studies, focusing on U.S. Middle East and war policy. She also serves on the board of Jewish Voice for Peace. Her most recent books include Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict." Even as protesters hit the streets again in Minneapolis, following the killing of yet another Black man, there is a tug of war between the city and those who want to protect what is known as George Floyd Square. The Square is located at the location where Floyd was killed at the hands of police. What's involved? We speak with Marcia Howard, a high school English teacher, caretaker and activist based in Minneapolis.

The Square is located at the location where Floyd was killed at the hands of police. What's involved? We speak with Marcia Howard, a high school English teacher, caretaker and activist based in Minneapolis.
Feven Gerezgiher reports: This weekend, union organizers celebrated May Day, a holiday with a long history in South Minneapolis. At the International Workers Day March on Saturday, racial justice organizer Monique Cullars Doty spoke to the labor movement's solidarity with black and brown lives since the death of George Floyd.“Solidarity indicates the people who are oppressed are coming together,” said Cullars Doty. “It takes all oppressed people. And laborers have been oppressed throughout history.”Labor unions got some attention after the shooting of Daunte Wright by a former Brooklyn Center police officer earlier in April. Transit union leaders defended their drivers' decision to not transport protest arrestees. Labor organizers noted that the working class experience overlaps with the experience of marginalized communities. Troy Bowman, an SEIU janitor, said as an essential worker, he felt expendable.“In the last year, I have had to quarantine two times missing over thirty days of work and I haven't even been paid for that time.” Bowman said he is frustrated that many essential workers did not receive hazard pay. Other laborers also shared concerns around union-busting and exploitation of immigrant workers during the pandemic.Marcia Howard is an organizer at George Floyd Square and a union member. She said collective bargaining can be applied for both racial and economic justice:“When we stand together, we show and prove each and every day the power of the people, do not doubt it,” said Howard. “We have seen it work. We are seeing it work. We will see it work. Stand with us.”Howard says George Floyd Square should not reopen to traffic until all the police officers involved in Floyd's death have been convicted.
