Merry Christmas from True Sunlight! In this holiday edition, investigative journalist Mandy Matney shares unexpected jury duty experience in Beaufort County—complete with an awkward courthouse reunion with lawyer-lawmaker Todd Rutherford. Mandy reflects on the question that led to her dismissal as a juror… whether legitimate reasons exist to not stop for police lights, diving deep into the dangers of police pursuits and the corruption she's witnessed firsthand covering Low Country law enforcement. Then Mandy and Liz Farrell dive deep into how Horry County Police Department potentially planted a bag of steroids in Scott's truck to support Weldon Boyd's narrative that Scott was a "drug crazed, raging out of control maniac." And finally we're expressing deep gratitude for the True Sunlight community—whose support helps hold public agencies and good ol boys accountable. We're making the world a little brighter, one investigation at a time. So much to cover, so let's dive in!
Beth Touchette reflects on her family's tradition of hanging Christmas lights.
As 2025 spirals around the plughole of posterity, The Guardian's parliamentary speechwriter John Crace joins us to look at the year inside the Westminster Village. Did Farage successfully cross over from consequence-free rabble-rouser to horribly plausible Prime Minister? Will the growing racism allegations halt his ambitions? Is there more going on in Starmer's government than meets the eye? And what did we learn from the launch of Your Party, the fall of Angela Rayner and the Tories' gap year?
Issac Johnson, from Christmas Decor says it takes 15 guys, for about 4 weeks (in August!) to put up all of the Gate City Bank blue lights.... and that is what people call that shade of light now! With upward of 250K lights, Issac explains the process and why they can't be up all year long! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
High in Colorado's Wet Mountain Valley, a lonely cemetery glows with mysterious blue lights... dancing orbs that have baffled miners, teenagers, scientists, and even National Geographic for more than a century. In this episode, we uncover the boom-town history behind Silver Cliff, the legends, the tragedies, and the science, and why these lights may be the last living heartbeat of a town that refused to die. hauntedamericanhistory.comPatreon- https://www.patreon.com/hauntedamericanhistoryBarnes and Noble - https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-forgotten-borough-christopher-feinstein/1148274794?ean=9798319693334AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQPQD68SEbookGOOGLE: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=S5WCEQAAQBAJ&pli=1KOBO: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-forgotten-borough-2?sId=a10cf8af-5fbd-475e-97c4-76966ec87994&ssId=DX3jihH_5_2bUeP1xoje_SMASHWORD: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1853316 !! This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Molly Reynolds and James Pearce to talk through the week's big national security news, including:“Rounding the ‘Feels Like It's Been a Century' Mark.” As President Trump comes to the end of his second first 100 days in office, he and his supporters are laying claim to FDR's mantle as the president to accomplish the most in such a short period of time. But how much success has Trump really had in enacting his broader policy agenda? How should we be seeing Trump's administration as it rounds this milestone?“The Art of the Appeal.” More than three months into his second term in the White House, President Trump has clearly embraced a new legal strategy: antagonistic towards the courts, aggressive in its claims of presidential power, and more than willing to run to the Supreme Court for validation. But so far that validation has been slow to come, and there are signs that even some judges appointed by Trump are growing weary and wary of his tactics. How successful is Trump's legal strategy proving? Could an alternative be more effective?“DOGE-ing a Bullet.” A new report from the minority staff of the Senate's permanent subcommittee on investigations claims that Elon Musk's involvement in the Trump administration and his role in dismantling federal agencies could save his various companies billions in regulatory costs and other potential liabilities. Is this a clear conflict of interest? Or does this report reflect other factors in play?In object lessons, Molly had a mighty craic in happening upon Blue Lights, a police procedural set in Belfast, and urges you to give it a lash. Scott, hailing victory and fighting for Old DC, cheered the thought of a new RFK Stadium. And James encouraged listeners to maki their way over to a local Japanese restaurant, where the sushi isn't the only thing rolled. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
