Considered not only one of the worst educational games of all time but possibly one of the worst in the NES library, Mario is Missing is a video game that I have recently beaten, and we have some strong opinions on the matter. Today we talk about Luigi in Mario Is Missing as we close out season 11.
Based on the educational game Mario is Missing! When Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi go to Antartica to stop Bowser, Mario mysteriously vanishes. Luigi and Yoshi decide to go through some doors only to find themselves in different cities around the world. It's up to the younger brother and trusty Yoshi to get back world-famous stolen artifacts and somehow find the missing Mario.
Today, we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of Mario Is Missing by teaching you all about Mario's educational games published in the 90s. As part of today's story, we'll learn all about 10 different Mario games, including Mario Is Missing, Mario's Time Machine, and Mario Teaches Typing. While doing so, we'll look at some of the factual inaccuracies found within these games. We'll also learn about one of Luigi's rare solo adventures, the 1st video game voice by Charles Martinet, the most recognizable voice of Mario, and a Mario game made by a Sewing Machine Company. So take a seat in Mario's classroom and join us for today's trip down Memory Card Lane.
The early 90s saw entertainment titans Nintendo attempt to plant their flag in the education business with Mario is Missing! With the goal of teaching children geography, it puts brother, Luigi, in the front seat for the first time and tasks him with rescuing his kidnapped sibling by jetsetting around the world and learning lots of facts about a multitude of metropolises. Does that sound good? We thought it did, but what did we find when we played it? Listen in to find out! Arnaldo, Kelly, Geoff and Anthony are extremely excited today to talk about arguably the greatest platforming video game ever made, Super Mario World! After catching up, the crew talks about the team responsible for Super Mario World and their own varied experiences with the game (10:50). The story, game mechanics and all the cool suits are up next (48:00). The show is rounded out with a discussion about the game's critical reception, legacy, and where we all think it ranks in the pantheon of Mario games (1:25:30). Super Mayrio continues! Jason Schreier (Press Reset: Ruin and Recovery in the Video Game Industry, Triple Click) joins Nick and Heather to discuss Mario is Missing! They talk about the failings of edutainment games in general, how inscrutable the game is, how the game presents "facts" and more!
The Beat of the Month crew assemble to show our respects (and unfortunately, some disrespects) to a great man - Mario! On March 31st the Super Mario 3D All Stars Collection and Super Mario Bros. 35 will be removed from the eshop forever. We decided to mark this momentous occasion to look back at Mario's life and the memories we had with the famous Italian plumber. So please join us as we take a trip down Mario memory lane!
In the first episode of Bit Parade, Mike and Eli dive into the NES classic (?) Mario Is Missing and write a song about it!
In 1992 (or maybe 1993) Mario-mania was sweeping the nation. The educators wanted to get kids interested in learning again, and what better way to trick them then using the Mario Brothers. But enough spotlight on Mario, why don't we make Luigi the star? The gang explores this Edutainment game released on DOS and ported to NES and SNES. Does the plot make sense not particularly. Are the facts correct? No. But it's a game. You can say that about it. Tom, Frank, Hunter and Chris go on a worldwide quest to find Mario despite knowing exactly where he is.
GTA: San Andreas HAS to be one of the biggest retro games we've never covered on the show. Fortunately for you, dear listener, it won our Patreon poll. And with that nail biting victory, it locked down a spot in our podcast rotation. I had never played this game prior to it winning our poll. And damned if I didn't sit down and power through this entire campaign. I still have a mountain of side missions and collectables and stuff to go back to, but I beat the game. I'm not the world's biggest GTA fan, and this is actually the first GTA game I've ever played through to the end. Is it good enough to convert me into a Grand Thefting Autoite? You'll have to listen to find out. My buddy Andre is a big GTA fan, he played this game religiously when it came out, and we break down the good, the bad, and the RC plane flying mission of GTA: San Andreas over an hour or so. And BEFORE we get into CJ and friends, it's the fabled Remember The Game? intro! I share some quick thoughts on the Microsoft/Bethesda acquisition, look into what was waiting at the end of the Hero Quest countdown clock we mentioned last week, talk a little Nintendo LEGO and more! Plus, we also have another fantastic edition of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. This edition features the three worst games we've covered on the podcast so far. If you want to skip to something specific, here's where to go: 0:00 - 8:20 Initial self-indulgent rambling 8:21 - 17:27 'Blowing In The Cartridge' (Listener comments & questions, and Letter Time!) 17:28 - 27:22 'Play One. If you're listening to Medium Retro it's a fair assumption you've played and enjoyed a Mario game. But have you ever wanted to learn while playing Mario? Probably not, but that didn't stop Nintendo and Software Toolworks from developing a series of Mario-based learning games. They are obscure, boring, and not what a 90s child wanted to play, but Micah and Jono both have fond memories with two of these classic educational titles.Jono grew up playing Mario Is Missing, a globetrotting mystery where you play as Luigi in search of his lost brother. Micah grew up playing Mario's Time Machine, a time-traveling tale through great moments in history. We hope enjoy our surprisingly fun and nostalgic trip through these two unusual Mario adventures. I'm considering revoking Mark McCue's Hall of Fame status for suggesting we talk about this piece of crap. Also, this episode contains more adult language than most episodes. You've been warned. This week's episode is all about the "educational"- "Mario" - "video game" (imagine that was said with air quotes) that is Mario is Missing. What should have been a sequel to Super Mario World starring the often overlooked Luigi is really nothing more than a crappy history lesson. It was designed to fool parents (like mine) into buying their kids a game that looked like the one they've been playing since they got their SNES. I hate it. If you only want to hear me yell about this dumb game, skip to 14:50. Before I get into Mario Is Missing, I obviously address the Coronavirus that's taking over the world right now. There's a new perk for Patreons of the show, and I tell you all about it! And Xbox revealed some Series X specs that I don't understand. Did you know Francisco Franco is most famous for being "stuffy"? MARIOFACTS.
I vividly remember getting this game for my birthday the year it came out. And despite the fact that I had a house full of my friends over for a party, and this was a single player game, it was all I did for the rest of the day. No regrets. The first thing that stands out about this game are the graphics. It's simply gorgeous. It was released less than a year before the Nintendo 64 launch, and the advancement Nintendo made between the original Super Mario World that debuted alongside the SNES and this game are undeniable. Clearly, the powers that be had a firm handle on what the Super Nintendo was capable of at this point. I consider this game to be the SNES's swan song. It's a hell of a way to go out. Everyone had fallen in love with Yoshi after his appearance in Super Mario World a few years earlier, and we were excited for the opportunity to play as him some more. It took one game (if you don't count spinoff appearances and the awful Super Scope game) for the dinosaur/sacrificial lamb to leap into a starring role. It took poor Luigi like 20 years to do that! (Again, no spinoffs. Looking at YOU, Mario Is Missing.....) This game featured some new gameplay mechanics, like launching eggs and the debut of Yoshi's "flutter" jump. The levels are deep and lengthy, and I *think* this was the first "Mario" game to feature collectibles in each level that you had to seek out if you wanted to 100% the game. And 100%ing this game was hard. I haven't done it to this day, although it's something I intend to do at some point. It gave you a ton of bang for your buck, and while it isn't really a sequel to the original Super Mario World per say, it lives up to the name sake from a quality perspective. I'd be curious to know how it would've sold it they had simply called it "Yoshi's Island", without slapping Super Mario World 2 on the cover. I have to assume it would have hurt sales somewhat, especially after Yoshi's Safari was such a disappointment a couple years prior. And without the success of this game, Yoshi might not be as big of character in the Nintendo universe as he is today. People forget that Yoshi didn't appear as a "power up" in a Mario game again until Super Mario Galaxy 2 15 years later. It doesn't really matter in the end, I suppose. Yoshi is awesome, and so is this game. My buddy Kyle and I had a great time explaining why on this week's podcast. Enjoy. The GameCube launched amid a wave of enthusiasm for a next-gen Nintendo console. The star of the launch line-up of games was a quirky little title by the name of Luigi's Mansion, the first game starring Luigi since the dud Mario Is Missing. With fluid animations and a fun ghostbusting mechanic, the horror-lite game became one of the biggest hits for the system. So, does Luigi's Mansion hold up well today? We all know who Mario is right? Mario is said by many to be the most famous character in video game history. Mario games, as a whole, have sold more than 210 million units, making the Mario franchise the best-selling video game franchise of all time. Outside of the Super Mario platform series, he has appeared in video games of other genres, including the Mario Kart racing series, sports games, such as the Mario Tennis and Mario Golf series, role-playing video games such as Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG, and educational games, such as Mario Is Missing! and Mario's Time Machine. He has inspired television shows, film, comics and a line of licensed merchandise.
