Whip sounds abound in this episode of Still Loading. I'm joined by TroytlePower of Geek to Geek Media and Thrak from the 3DO Experience to go on a rip-roaring adventure of punching some nazis. And no, this is not a continuation of Punch a Nazi month, but it is kind of a spiritual sequel to it. We are talking about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle this week. The three of us chat about our first experiences with the iconic archeologist, how this game surprised us in ways we weren't expecting, bizarre evangelical media and much more! **Please note this episode was recorded before Microsoft's announcement of massive layoffs so it was not brought up in this episode. Back in 2020 I did an episode on Final Fantasy X. Five years later there is finally a sequel to that episode where I talk about the sequel to that game! Joining me this week is Rick from Pixel Project Radio to help me change in and out of numerous costumes as we discuss the first ever direct sequel in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy X-2. X-2 expands the world of FFX in many clever ways while also introducing a really unique battle system that I enjoyed a decent amount. Rick and I had a lot of fun dissecting what makes this game unique, how it feels to play it all these years later and ultimately what we both felt was it's downfall. Returning to the show today is my good friend Try from the YouTube channel My Life in Gaming, and we do a pretty thorough overview of what to do to play your retro game systems and retro games on modern televisions. BONUS EPISODE! For a surprise bonus episode, I sat down to chat with Karl Hörnell to talk about his recently released speculative fiction novel Singularity Minus Twelve. Karl is also a game designer who was fairly prolific on the Commodore 64 back in the 80's along with web based gaming in the later 90's/early 00's. His novel Singularity Minus Twelve tries to imagine our world in the future with how AI may be integrated into our lives. It's also a freakin' fun read where it's like the Dirty Dozen (you know that 1967 movie) meets rogue AI. In this gaming adjacent episode (hence why it's a bonus episode) we discuss how his game development career influenced his writing and the themes he wanted to incorporate into the book and what does being sentient really mean. Cabin Mike brings the bird sounds and boat vibes while we get deep into cereal critiques.  Then we shift gears to reflect on two major wins: Fresh Fest and the Blooms + BIRDIES Golf Tournament. We're still buzzing from the community love, creative energy, and massive support from our sponsors, speakers, designers, and everyone who made it feel less like an event and more like a floral art movement. Another Mario Month comes to a close. This game is a prime example of a sequel, meaning it's the most sequel I've ever seen a sequel sequel. What did any of that mean? It's a sequel in good and bad ways. Bill and I dissect what works and what doesn't, where we would have liked to see more changed and where maybe they could have changed less. We are gonna have a fine time on this super episode of a podcast. In this episode I am joined by Andre from the Fine Time podcast and Aaron from the SuperPod Saga podcast to talk about Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga! This game was not what I expected at all, both in good ways and bad ways (but mostly good). It was by far one of the bigger swings I've seen for a Nintendo franchise and it took Mario in some really interesting directions. I really enjoyed getting to chat with Andre and Aaron about this game and see what their experience was like with it. We also mention Kathy Griffin in this episode. Do with that what you will. 16 bit JRPGs are a bit of a nostalgia spot for me. I would actually classify it as more of misplaced nostalgia in that I didn't play a lot of them growing up but playing them now makes me feel nostalgic anyway. This week on the show I was lucky enough to get a review copy of a recently released indie game that takes inspiration from the 16 bit JRPG style. I'm joined by Sam AKA Storm Beagle to talk about Beloved Rapture, an RPG made in the style of a 16 bit JRPG. To wrap up the first ever backlog month I am joined by friend of the show Mick Arcade to talk about Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII! This game brought out some varying emotions in me. At some points I really enjoyed my time with the game and was happy it got chosen. And then at other points I was frustrated beyond belief with how the story unfolds. But with this mix of feelings is it still worth playing Dirge of Cerberus in 2024? Is this really the most Nomura-ass game you will ever play? You will have to listen to find out! Another hole in my backlog is filled! Well sort of. I'm joined by my original cohost with the mohost Justin to talk about the Sega classic ToeJam & Earl! This game was the only game I was not able to beat for backlog month. What was it about this game that made me not be able to finish it? It ended up being tough for me to answer but Justin and I break down a lot of the facets of this iconic game and what we felt ultimately still holds up and doesnt hold up all these years later. Episode 2 of Backlog Month features vampires, werewolves and mysterious organization! This week Phil Morgan from the Deleted Saves Podcast returns to the show to talk about the Order 1886. We take a look at why this game didn't review well, why it holds up better than you think it would and much more! Please note this was recorded WAY before the news of Ready at Dawn at closed down.
