Las políticas revolucionarias del bando republicano llevaron al trueque de alimentos o bienes básicos para realizar entierros. En este nuevo episodio del podcast de historia de Libertad Digital, Desmemoria Histórica, presentamos el libro del historiador, investigador y periodista Miguel Platón Por qué Franco ganó la guerra.Desmemoria HistóricaNuria Richart Que Franco no perdiera la Guerra Civil y el bando del Frente Popular no la ganara es algo que ha marcado nuestra historia política, económica y social. Han pasado 90 años y los españoles siguen sin saber qué pasó para que un bando ganara y otro no. Dos leyes de memoria y una continua manipulación de la historia, por acción, omisión o sobreactuación, nos tendría que hacer pensar qué es lo que hay detrás de este viejo empeño. En su libro Platón cita al historiador norteamericano Burnett Bolloten, que en 1961 advirtió: "Aunque el estallido de la Guerra Civil Española en julio de 1936 fue seguido de una revolución social a gran escala en la zona antifranquista —en algunos aspectos, más profunda que la Revolución Bolchevique en sus primeras fases— a millones de personas lúcidas fuera de España se les ocultó no únicamente su profundidad y su magnitud sino incluso su existencia por medio de una política de duplicidad e hipocresía de la que no hay paralelo en la historia". Desvelamos los factores clave que llevaron a la victoria al Bando Nacional cuando ni era evidente ni inevitable. Al inicio del conflicto, en julio de 1936, hace ahora noventa años, los sublevados se encontraban en una situación de clara desventaja material y territorial frente al Gobierno del Frente Popular. Pedro Fernández Barbadillo y Platón recuerdan en este nuevo capítulo de Desmemoria Histórica cómo los rebeldes solo controlaban la tercera parte del territorio, el 40% de la población y carecían de los recursos financieros e industriales del país, que permanecían bajo el control de la República en Cataluña, el País Vasco y Valencia.Las nefastas decisiones económicas revolucionarias Como resalta Platón, una mejor gestión de los recursos y una dirección militar unificada y profesional permitieron a Francisco Franco invertir la situación a lo largo de los tres años de guerra. Por cierto, el Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV) entregó intacta la industria siderometalúrgica de Vizcaya a los sublevados en agosto de 1937 en el Pacto de Santoña.Por qué Franco ganó la guerra: una contienda manipuladaMiguel Platón En el plano económico, en el podcast se detalla cómo la República destruyó su propio sistema productivo mediante las colectivizaciones forzosas o la abolición de la propiedad privada, lo que provocó una inflación desbocada y el colapso de la peseta republicana. En estas zonas el desabastecimiento obligó a recurrir al trueque para subsistir. Sindicatos como la CNT llegaron a exigir alimentos o bienes básicos para realizar entierros. La cartilla de racionamiento solo funcionó en las zonas revolucionarias. Cada bando también gestionó de forma muy diferente la ayuda internacional. Mientras que Franco obtuvo suministros militares, petróleo de la Texaco y más de 10.000 camiones de marcas norteamericanas como Ford y General Motors a crédito, la República dependió de la Unión Soviética. Stalin, por su parte, "estafó triplemente a los republicanos e hizo mucho daño al Ejército Popular", dice Platón. No solo exigió el pago al contado con el famoso oro del Banco de España, sino que estafó sistemáticamente al Gobierno frentepopulista: fijó un tipo de cambio arbitrario y cobró precios inflados por armamento obsoleto. Otro factor fundamental de la victoria del bando nacional fue la unidad política y el liderazgo militar que el bando rojo fue incapaz de alcanzar. En septiembre de 1936, el bando sublevado nombra a Franco generalísimo de los ejércitos y jefe del Gobierno del Estado y se establece el mando único, oficializado el 1 de octubre en Burgos. Además, los nacionales estuvieron dirigidos por oficiales profesionales y experimentados en las campañas de Marruecos. En contraposición, el Gobierno de la República huyó a Valencia y los sindicatos, anarquistas y demás partidos del Frente Popular se enfrentaron de forma sangrienta entre ellos; la violencia interna en la zona republicana se ejemplifica en los sucesos de mayo de 1937 en Barcelona. Hace unos días, el 13 de julio de 1936, también se han cumplido nueve décadas del asesinato del líder de la oposición, José Calvo Sotelo, el hecho decisivo para el Alzamiento militar. La violencia por parte de un Frente Popular revolucionario estaba desatada. Es poco conocido el dato de que la primera muerte de civiles en la guerra la perpetran los frentepopulistas.

El 17 de julio de 1936 el ejército de África se sublevó contra el gobierno en el protectorado español de Marruecos. Un día más tarde la rebelión militar se extendió a las comandancias de la península, pero no triunfó en todas ellas, en las principales ciudades y en la propia capital fracasó. Esta circunstancia transformó lo que un grupo de generales habían planeado como un golpe rápido e indoloro en una guerra civil que duraría casi tres años. Las dos Españas se reorganizaron. La republicana en torno a un gobierno debilitado y con muchas divisiones internas que iría improvisando y se mantendría a la defensiva. La sublevada, que pasó a denominarse nacional, en torno a la figura de Francisco Franco, un general africanista que en octubre fue nombrado comandante supremo por sus compañeros de armas. La guerra tuvo varias varias fases. En el otoño de 1936 las columnas sublevadas avanzaron sobre Madrid, pero no consiguieron tomar la ciudad, lo que prolongó el conflicto. En 1937 el frente principal se desplazó al norte. Los sublevados se hicieron con el País Vasco, Cantabria y Asturias desde las zonas que ya controlaban en Navarra y Galicia. En 1938 la ofensiva de Aragón partió la zona republicana en dos. La batalla del Ebro, entre julio y noviembre de 1938, fue la más larga y sangrienta de todas. La derrota republicana permitió a los sublevados hacerse con Cataluña dejando al bando republicano herido de muerte y sin posibilidad ya de recuperarse. Unos meses más tarde se rindió Madrid y, con él, lo que quedaba de la zona controlada por la república. La guerra terminó el 1 de abril de 1939. La guerra pronto adquirió dimensión internacional. Alemania e Italia enviaron al bando sublevado material y unidades militares como la Legión Cóndor y el Cuerpo de Tropas Voluntarias. La Unión Soviética suministró aviación, carros de combate y asesores al Gobierno republicano, pagados en buena parte con las reservas de oro del Banco de España trasladadas a Moscú en 1936. Junto a eso unos 35.000 voluntarios extranjeros se integraron en las Brigadas Internacionales, que se retiraron en 1938 cuando la guerra estaba ya prácticamente perdida. El Comité de No Intervención, creado en septiembre de 1936 a instancias de Francia y el Reino Unido, no consiguió impedir que la guerra se internacionalizase. Ambas potencias se mantuvieron al margen. La guerra fue muy costosa en términos humanos y materiales, una auténtica tragedia para un país que ya arrastraba problemas económicos antes de su estallido. El balance fue de aproximadamente medio millón de muertos por todas las causas, de los cuales entre 150.000 y 200.000 correspondieron a operaciones militares y el resto a la represión en ambas zonas, el hambre y las enfermedades. España quedó devastada y tardó mucho en reconstruirse porque, apenas unos meses después de concluir la contienda, comenzó la segunda guerra mundial. It triggered a conflict that tore the country apart, drew in fighters and writers from across the world and claimed half a million lives. In 1981 one of the world's most iconic works of art – Guernica - was finally handed to Spain after a 44-year exile.Pablo Picasso had created the huge mural in 1937 followed the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish civil war. On this day, 11 March 1975, there was an attempted far right coup in Portugal, known as the March 11 Intentona. This happened in the context of the revolutionary period that Portugal which began with the fall of the right-wing dictatorship on 25 April 1974. After the resignation of president António Spínola in September 1974, a left-wing government took power headed by prime minister and Communist Party-sympathiser, Vasco Gonçalves. Seeking to reverse the growing radicalisation of the revolution, Spínola led an attempted military coup, which failed due to the massive popular support of the MFA (movement of the armed forces — a movement of soldiers and junior officers that overthrew the dictatorship) and forced him to flee to Francisco Franco's dictatorship in Spain. In the cars of the Spinolist officers, massive amounts of money and cheques were found, signed by Espirito Santo (bankers of BES) and António Champalimaud, the richest man in Portugal at the time, with a fortune of around 9 billion euro (in 2020 equivalent), half of the Portuguese GDP in 1974. This counterrevolutionary threat, financed by the Portuguese capitalist class and supported by the Spanish and Brazilian military dictatorships, further spurred the revolution. Workplace and land takeovers accelerated under the slogan "land to those who work on it" and compelled Vasco Gonçalves, in cooperation with unions and the workers, to order the nationalisation of almost 70% of the Portuguese economy, including the financial empires of the Espirito Santo and Champalimaud families, who fled to Brazil where they also possessed vast wealth. In this episode, I sit down with Andres Boaz Munoz Mosquera, a former Spanish military officer, NATO legal adviser, professor of international law, and spiritual caregiver, whose life has been shaped by war, democracy, and service.Andrés describes himself as “the product of three wars”: the Spanish Civil War, Spain's colonial conflicts in North Africa, and the war in Bosnia in the 1990s. His family history carries the trauma of exile under Francisco Franco, a grandfather imprisoned in concentration camps, a father who returned to Spain through the Foreign Legion, and a childhood where politics were largely left unspoken.We talk about his decision to join the military and what it meant to be trained not just as a soldier but in constitutional law. From there, he takes us to Bosnia in 1994, where serving under the United Nations exposed him to both the limits of peacekeeping and the realities of bureaucracy in wartime. This episode explores the fascinating history of the Glenlee, a tall ship built in Glasgow 1896 and restored by the Clyde Maritime Trust. Originally a cargo ship, the Glenlee survived fifteen voyages around Cape Horn and later served as a Spanish Navy training vessel during the fascist dictatorial rule of Francisco Franco. 50 years after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco, Spain continues to feel its way towards an accommodation between its once-warring factions. And nowhere in Spain is more emblematic of the lasting divisions provoked by the Spanish civil war than the place known for decades as El Valle de los Caidos – the Valley of the Fallen. Built partly with the forced labour of political prisoners, this is a monument that symbolised Franco's fascist victory over Republican Spain. The Valley became a pilgrimage place for people who revered the dictator – especially after he was buried behind the basilica's altar. But in the 21st century, the debate has been about the place of such a monument in modern Spain. And since 2018, Spain's Socialist government has been determined to change the narrative. In 2019, the remains of Francisco Franco were removed. Then the site was renamed El Valle de Cuelgamuros. And just this year - after lengthy negotiations - the Vatican and the Catholic Church in Spain accepted the government's plans to make the site, ‘a place of democratic memory', rather than somewhere paying homage to the dictatorship.But it seems no one is happy.
