Lessons from Studying the MBI:TACIn this episode, Dr. Jud Brewer and Dr. Rebecca Crane explore the Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Teaching Assessment Criteria (MBI:TAC), a widely used tool for assessing the competence of mindfulness-based program (MBP) teachers. As mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) gain popularity in clinical and workplace settings, ensuring teaching integrity and program fidelity becomes increasingly important. This study tested a training model to help mindfulness teachers reliably assess MBP teaching quality. The findings show that international MBP teachers can align their understanding of teaching competence, paving the way for standardized mindfulness education. Detective Mike Weber is interviewed on the Intentional Clinician podcast with Paul Krauss MA LPC. Mike draws on his deep experience investigating Munchausen by Proxy(MBP)—a rare but harrowing form of child abuse where caregivers fabricate or induce illness in children for attention or other psychological gain. Weber has investigated more cases of medical child abuse than almost any other detective in the U.S., with over a dozen arrests and several convictions to his name. His work, often in partnership with medical experts, highlights the severe systemic challenges faced in prosecuting MBP crimes: cases are difficult to prove, victims are vulnerable, and the legal system is often hesitant to accept the reality that a mother could deliberately harm her child. Weber recounts intensely complex casework involving detailed deception, manipulation of medical professionals, and lasting trauma for victims. He describes cases where mothers made up or caused symptoms—one involving hundreds of falsified doctor visits over years, which ultimately was dismissed before reaching trial due to prosecutorial reluctance. Weber is outspoken about systemic shortcomings, emphasizing that many cases never see a courtroom and that awareness, better training, and stronger advocacy are urgently needed. Weber's book, The Mother Next Door, co-authored with Andrea Dunlop, combines true crime storytelling and psychological analysis to explore MBP through the lens of three chilling real cases: Hope Ybarra, Brittany Phillips, and Mary Welch. The book not only exposes the devastation of MBP but also examines the emotional consequences for families and the formidable difficulties in holding perpetrators accountable. We examine perhaps the most important piece of the complex puzzle of the Hartman case: what Sophie wrote about it in her journals.  We're joined by Dr. James Hamilton, an MBP expert with a PhD in clinical psychology, to walk us through some of Sophie's most chilling journal entries collected in the case files. We also look at Sophie's disturbing internet search history during the time of C's alleged Central precocious puberty (CPP) diagnosis.  After being separated from Sophie, M and C are placed with Sophie's mom and sister. Detective Lee discusses the problems that arise when placing children with people that are most likely going to side with the perpetrator. In April of 2022, C and M are returned to Sophie and criminal charges are subsequently dropped. You might know Mark Blundell as a Formula 1 driver, or a TV personality, but he's also the founder of MBP, a sports talent agency that works across sponsorship, talent management, brands and events. Some of the worst kinds of abuse happen right in front of us—often hidden behind love, care, and even medicine. In this episode, Jill sits down with returning guest Andrea Dunlop and her co-author and colleague Mike Weber to talk about their book, The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy. Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) is a disturbing form of medical child abuse, which we have covered on the podcast before, where a caregiver—usually a mother—makes a child sick or pretends they are, all for attention and sympathy. Andrea, a podcast host and expert on MBP, and Mike, a seasoned law enforcement officer with years of experience in child abuse cases, highlighted what they've learned from investigating these heartbreaking stories.  They explain why these cases are so hard to catch, the legal system's challenges in prosecuting perpetrators, and the chilling similarities between MBP and child sexual abuse.
