On this episode of Melody and Friends, Melody sits down with licensed marriage and family therapist Marnie C. Ferree. Marnie is also the founder and director of Bethesda Workshops, a faith-based clinical intensive workshop program for sex addicts, their partners, and couples affected by sexual addiction. Marnie shares her story of growing up with a father who was a pastor that was a sex addict, using both same sex pornography and men to feed his addiction, and ultimately being sexually abused and groomed by one of her father's sexual partners. She then talks to Melody about the importance of ministering and helping the partners of those addicts and how they can begin their journey to recovering from these traumatic relationships. Our listeners can check out all of the resources Marnie and her team offers over at bethesdaworkshops.org. Who is Marnie Ferree? Marnie C. Ferree is the founder of Bethesda Workshops and has a national reputation as a leader in the field of sexual addiction. She has an active role in every workshop. In 1997, Marnie established a workshop program for female sex addicts that was the first of its kind, and today draws participants from across the United States and Canada. That program expanded in 2001 to include workshops for male sex addicts, partners, and couples, and it was renamed Bethesda Workshops. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a certified sex addiction therapist (CSAT). Things We Discuss in this Episode The different types of sexual addicts that can show up in relationships. Not all sex addicts look or act the same and Marnie discusses the different types she works with at Bethsda Workshops How Marnie recovered from her upbringing of having a sex addict father, being abused by one of her father's partners, and later her husband who was also addicted to sexually deviant behavior. How partners can start their journey of recovery after experiencing the pain of a relationship with an addict and how they can become their best selves after moving on. How to recognize as a partner that there is nothing more you can do in a relationship and the healthiest option is for you to leave that partnership. Marnie explains that it takes two healthy people to have a relationship and one person cannot keep that relationship afloat themself. The first step as a partner when you recognize your significant other has begun exhibiting addictive behavior is to remember that it is NOT your fault. You will be okay and you can choose health, no matter your partner's choice. Partners need help even more than the addict. How Bethesda Workshops can help both partners and addicts through the struggles of addiction, the heartbreak of discovery, and how to create a safe, impactful recovery journey.

In S2E7 of the SheRecovery Podcast, you'll hear Part 2 of a two-part interview with Dena Bennett. Dena came out of a hedonistic and atheistic lifestyle when she met Jesus in 2006. In this interview, Dena discusses what the long road of recovery from pornography addiction looked like after she found salvation (because like most, there wasn't instant freedom!). Dena also discusses the impact her recovery and desire for purity has had on dating and marriage. Before Jesus, Dena's life primarily revolved around sexual relationships, pornography, and masturbation. But by God's grace, with the help of her church, and over the course of many years, Dena experienced deep healing and transformation with regard to her sexual struggles, now walking in sexual sobriety for 8 years. In 2016 she had the great privilege of working with her church to help start a ministry for women who struggle with sexual sin. One of her many joys of being in this ministry has been to help develop a small group curriculum titled, Set Free: Equipping Women in the Quest for Sexual Integrity, recently published on Amazon. Licensed marriage and family therapist Marnie Ferree joins Rob today for a conversation on healing sex and love addictions, her own story of recovery from abuse, and how our background and current culture shape the way we go about getting our needs met in love and sexual relationships. Since 1992 she has been working to advance the field of healing sexual addiction in a variety of different arenas, and is currently pioneering the first intensive workshop for female teens and adolescent sex addicts. TAKEAWAYS: [1:20] Marnie C. Ferree, M.A. is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Nashville, where she directs and is the founder of Bethesda Workshops, a short time Christian based intensive program for sex addicts and partners. The workshop she established in 1997 for female sex addicts was the first of its kind in the country. Her book No Stones: Women Redeemed from Sexual Addiction was the first to address sexual addiction in women from a Christian perspective. [3:14] As a young adolescent Marnie had unresolved losses, abandonment, family dysfunction and abuse within her close circle. This had a major impact on how she paired affection and attention with sex, and her pattern of getting her needs met through intense relationships reflects the story of addiction all too often and mirrored the abuse in her childhood. [9:23] Marnie helps her clients see the unconscious patterns that emerge in their adulthood from previous abuse when looking for love and connection. They work together to alleviate some of the confusion, shame, and blame. [12:54] Marnie is seeing less overt sexual trauma in her workshops, and more of the effect coming from our sexually saturated and exploitative culture. [18:09] We are in a deep need of more honest conversations on human sexuality and the way our values and belief systems clash with the objectification of women and men in our culture. [23:09] Healing begins when someone decides to bring their secret behavior into light, whatever their problematic or dependent behavior is. [28:42] Marnie feels her work with adolescent females and their families very redemptive and rewarding.
