Jason VanRuler doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk, emphasizing the importance of identifying and challenging our own self-perceptions. He's all about questioning the evidence behind those perceptions and boy, does that hit home for many of us! One of Jason's key messages? Find safe people to share and seek support from. Starting small and accessible rather than diving headfirst into vulnerability is essential. Learning curves! We've all been there! Let's talk about Jason's personal journey... From seeking support in all the wrong places to finding the right people who lifted him up, he's been there and back. His wife played a pivotal role in his journey, proving the power of a strong support system. Jason VanRuler also touches on his relationship with God, from strain to seeing His presence in his life. He emphasizes prayer as a safe space for vulnerability, intertwining it with the deep connection between vulnerability and love. Can I get an amen?! "Do the next right thing, have courage, and connect." Jason's advice is all about taking those small, courageous steps towards connecting with others. It all boils down to having the bravery to reach out, especially with difficult past experiences in tow. Jason's fascination with understanding and helping people led him to become a therapist. He's all about encouraging others to reassess their beliefs and seek validation to unlock their true worth. You are so much more than you realize! Questions, questions, questions! We highlight the value of asking, learning, and growing through the wisdom of others. Unleash that inquisitive nature for your own benefit and the good of those around you! Family, love, and connection take center stage as we discuss the role of parents in empowering children. We touch on the healing power of these moments and how children can teach us adults a thing or two about vulnerability and curiosity. And of course, there's some light-hearted banter about soccer teams because who doesn't love a good laugh? It's all about embracing the process, growth, and finding trust in God as a friend and coach on this wild ride called life. There's also a soul-stirring story about a song initially representing heartache, which transformed into a symbol of hope and healing. Perspective shifts are everything, and hope truly shines in the moments when we need it most. This conversation is a powerful reminder of the beauty and strength found in vulnerability and connection. Let's keep this energy alive and embrace the journey of growth, love, and understanding. You are never alone!   Key takeaways from the conversation 1. Embrace Vulnerability: Jason VanRuler stressed the significance of identifying and questioning our self-perceptions. He encouraged finding safe people to share and seek support from, highlighting the power of vulnerability in connecting with God and others. 2. Foster Authentic Connections: Our lives are defined by our relationships and our ability to connect with others. Jason emphasized the value of seeking support from trustworthy individuals and the importance of community in personal growth. 3. Courage in Personal Growth: By sharing his personal journey and the obstacles he faced in becoming a therapist, Jason emphasized the importance of courage, connection, and seeking wisdom from others. His story serves as an inspiration for embracing vulnerability and pursuing growth. MORE ABOUT THE BOOK, GET PAST YOUR PAST Licensed therapist Jason VanRuler personally knows how difficult it can be to look at your brokenness, heal and move forward. He grew up surrounded by abuse, addiction, chaos and conflict. One morning after a night out drinking and using drugs, VanRuler was alone in an apartment he couldn't afford due to having an unstable job and a substantial amount of debt. He felt broken and hated himself for falling into the same patterns he saw as a child and swore never to be a part of. After years of avoiding his pain, he eventually reached the point where he was able to get professional help and started to feel hope for the first time. The battle of healing from the past is a long and hard journey. In his new book, Get Past Your Past: How Facing Your Broken Places Leads to True Connection, VanRuler invites readers to address past pain and hurt and embrace love and connection through personal stories, biblical wisdom and his clinical experience as a therapist. He offers empathy, grace and a hand to hold as he shares his own trauma and struggles with alcohol, drug use and depression combined with his professional knowledge from over a decade helping patients face their brokenness and find healing and authentic connection.  “I spent so many years letting things that had happened in the past make me feel broken and run the show, and I know it's not easy to shine a light on those places,” writes VanRuler. “I wrote this book for everyone, not only as a guide as they navigate these stages but also as a reference for the times when they feel stuck and alone. I want readers to know that they are not alone in their journey or the exception to the rule.” Purchase the book here: https://www.jasonvr.com/book  MEET JASON VANRULER Jason VanRuler began his career in 2011 and has worked with many populations over the years, ranging from persons who are incarcerated to top CEOs, performers and artists, and just about everyone in between. We can find Christ in the dark places of our lives as he enters into the suffering with us and he will be there to lead us to the next step. We talk about the necessity of acknowledging where we are at, being honest with ourselves and God, asking for help, and finding friends to walk with us. Join us as we uncover the wounds of our past, so that we can heal from them, and move forward into the future in a healthy way connected to God and to one another. Marnie is also the founder and director of Bethesda Workshops, a faith-based clinical intensive workshop program for sex addicts, their partners, and couples affected by sexual addiction. Marnie shares her story of growing up with a father who was a pastor that was a sex addict, using both same sex pornography and men to feed his addiction, and ultimately being sexually abused and groomed by one of her father's sexual partners. She then talks to Melody about the importance of ministering and helping the partners of those addicts and how they can begin their journey to recovering from these traumatic relationships. Our listeners can check out all of the resources Marnie and her team offers over at bethesdaworkshops.org.  Who is Marnie Ferree? Marnie C. Ferree is the founder of Bethesda Workshops and has a national reputation as a leader in the field of sexual addiction. She has an active role in every workshop. In 1997, Marnie established a workshop program for female sex addicts that was the first of its kind, and today draws participants from across the United States and Canada. That program expanded in 2001 to include workshops for male sex addicts, partners, and couples, and it was renamed Bethesda Workshops. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a certified sex addiction therapist (CSAT). Things We Discuss in this Episode The different types of sexual addicts that can show up in relationships. Not all sex addicts look or act the same and Marnie discusses the different types she works with at Bethsda Workshops How Marnie recovered from her upbringing of having a sex addict father, being abused by one of her father's partners, and later her husband who was also addicted to sexually deviant behavior. How partners can start their journey of recovery after experiencing the pain of a relationship with an addict and how they can become their best selves after moving on. How to recognize as a partner that there is nothing more you can do in a relationship and the healthiest option is for you to leave that partnership. Marnie explains that it takes two healthy people to have a relationship and one person cannot keep that relationship afloat themself. The first step as a partner when you recognize your significant other has begun exhibiting addictive behavior is to remember that it is NOT your fault. You will be okay and you can choose health, no matter your partner's choice. Partners need help even more than the addict. How Bethesda Workshops can help both partners and addicts through the struggles of addiction, the heartbreak of discovery, and how to create a safe, impactful recovery journey.

That means you make a conscious choice no matter how you feel. You may still be angry, yet you forgive. You may still be in pain, but you forgive. You may still be wearing the scars of the abuse, but you forgive.” - Marnie Ferree "Very often, it is the recognition of betrayal by a spouse that helps to illuminate a woman's story." - Marnie Ferree

On this week's episode of the Undone Redone podcast, Tray and Melody welcome a long-awaited guest to the show, Marnie Ferree. Marnie is the founder of Bethesda Workshops, a program that specializes in helping those struggling with sexual brokenness and was the first of its kind to help female sex addicts in what was thought to be a "male only issue." Marnie shares her struggles with infidelity and sexual brokenness, how she has created workshops and resources to help other women, and why it is so important to approach sex addiction as a human issue rather than a purely male or female one. Her book, No Stones: Women Redeemed from Sexual Addiction, was one of the earliest books on female sex and love addicts and provides crucial information for women looking to escape the cycle of sex addiction. Our listeners can learn more about all the resources Marnie has available by visiting bethesdaworkshops.org/ and can check out her book at https://amzn.to/37mET39.

Licensed marriage and family therapist Marnie Ferree joins Rob today for a conversation on healing sex and love addictions, her own story of recovery from abuse, and how our background and current culture shape the way we go about getting our needs met in love and sexual relationships. Since 1992 she has been working to advance the field of healing sexual addiction in a variety of different arenas, and is currently pioneering the first intensive workshop for female teens and adolescent sex addicts.   TAKEAWAYS: [1:20] Marnie C. Ferree, M.A. is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Nashville, where she directs and is the founder of Bethesda Workshops, a short time Christian based intensive program for sex addicts and partners. The workshop she established in 1997 for female sex addicts was the first of its kind in the country. Her book No Stones: Women Redeemed from Sexual Addiction was the first to address sexual addiction in women from a Christian perspective. [3:14] As a young adolescent Marnie had unresolved losses, abandonment, family dysfunction and abuse within her close circle. This had a major impact on how she paired affection and attention with sex, and her pattern of getting her needs met through intense relationships reflects the story of addiction all too often and mirrored the abuse in her childhood. [9:23] Marnie helps her clients see the unconscious patterns that emerge in their adulthood from previous abuse when looking for love and connection. They work together to alleviate some of the confusion, shame, and blame. [12:54] Marnie is seeing less overt sexual trauma in her workshops, and more of the effect coming from our sexually saturated and exploitative culture. [18:09] We are in a deep need of more honest conversations on human sexuality and the way our values and belief systems clash with the objectification of women and men in our culture. [23:09] Healing begins when someone decides to bring their secret behavior into light, whatever their problematic or dependent behavior is. [28:42] Marnie feels her work with adolescent females and their families very redemptive and rewarding.   RESOURCES Sex and Relationship Healing @RobWeissMSW Sex Addiction 101 Out of the Doghouse Cruise Control No Stones: Women Redeemed by Sexual Shame Making Advances: A Comprehensive Guide for Treating Female Sex and Love Addicts Bethesda Workshops
