In this post-conference conversation, Fr. Turbo Qualls joins me to reflect on the themes, insights, and discussions that emerged from the inaugural OINTMENT Conference—an event bringing together clergy, clinicians, and laypeople to explore the relationship between Orthodox Christianity, mental health, and the healing of the human person.   Our discussion moves beyond the usual debates about therapy and religion to examine deeper questions: What is healing? What role do trauma, suffering, and repentance play in spiritual growth? How should Orthodox Christians think about psychology, medication, and mental health treatment? And how do we avoid reducing human beings to either diagnoses or demons?   We explore the Orthodox understanding of the person, the Church as a hospital for the soul, the modern crisis of loneliness and fragmentation, and the ultimate goal of the Christian life—theosis.   Whether you're a priest, clinician, convert, or simply someone seeking healing, this conversation offers a thoughtful and deeply Orthodox vision of what it means to become whole.   In This Episode   * Reflections and takeaways from the OINTMENT Conference * Orthodoxy and modern psychology * Trauma, suffering, and spiritual healing * The relationship between clergy and clinicians * The Church as a hospital for the soul * Medication, therapy, and discernment * Theosis as the goal of the Christian life * The deepest wounds of modern America * Hope for the future of Orthodox ministry and mental health care   About Fr. Turbo Qualls   Fr. Turbo Qualls is the rector of St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Church in Kansas City, Missouri. He is the founder of the OINTMENT Institute, an initiative dedicated to fostering collaboration between Orthodox clergy and mental health professionals in the care and healing of the human person.   Fr. Michael interviews Kevin Dau, pastor for discipleship and counseling at Hespeler Baptist Church in Cambridge, Ontario, and a practicum instructor for Heritage College and Seminary's master's level biblical counseling certificate. Dau contrasts professional counseling with pastoral counseling, where caring becomes more personal and multifaceted because counselees are also part of church life, increasing stress and highlighting human limits. Using Galatians 6:1–3, Exodus 18, and themes from Psalms, they discuss bearing one another's burdens while watching for temptation, pride, and burnout, and the need for accountability, peer support, and sometimes personal counseling for counselors. They emphasize proactive self-care, ordinary means of grace, recognizing stress signals (affect and effectiveness), building a church culture of vulnerability, and regularly asking trusted observers what they see and acting on it.00:00 Podcast intro and guest00:59 Kevin ministry roles02:10 Training counselors at Heritage03:38 Pastoral burdens and stress07:24 Needing care and counseling12:00 Accountability for shepherds18:12 Asking for help early20:34 Stress and means of grace24:55 Galatians warnings and humility26:28 Practical steps and closing

As a leader at the fifth oldest HBCU, Mr. Scott shares his journey from early ministry roots to helping students develop unapologetic critical thinking and global cultural understanding. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Lucas F.W. Wilson discuss his book, Shame-Sex Attraction, which explores the experiences of conversion therapy survivors. Lucas explains that conversion therapy aims to change sexual orientation or gender identity, despite its ineffectiveness and harmful nature. He traces the history of conversion practices from the 1800s to the present, highlighting various methods like electroshock therapy and aversion therapy, and their rapid growth after 1976 up through the heyday in the early 2000s. Dr. Wilson shares his personal journey through conversion therapy at Liberty University and emphasizes the broader impact of conversion practices on societal beliefs and individual identities. He advocates for empathy and understanding to challenge these practices.    Key Takeaways: There are no known cases where conversion therapy has actually changed someone's sexual attraction. While there is anecdotal evidence from the organizations perpetuating the claims, research shows that it is not effective. "Pastoral Counseling" and other similar phrases are used to mask or obfuscate the practice of conversion therapy to hide the work that is being done. There is no typical or standard conversion therapy. The experiences range widely from person to person. Conversion practices can be seen throughout many, if not all, people's lives, even if they've never been to official conversion therapy, nor is it solely for those who are part of the queer or religious community. It is important to engage with ideas and communities that are different from your own.    "I would argue that probably every single person in this world at some point has been told 'don't act like this,' whether they were a kid or older, and that message has stayed with them and affected how they present their gender and how they identify." —  Dr. Lucas F.W. When it comes to the issues that pastors are forced to deal with, the landscape is quickly changing. In a culture that is obsessed with gender and sexuality, a pastor is often going to be engaging with these issues and ideas. However, there is nothing new under the sun and the Scriptures have much to say on issues of sexuality. Nate sits down with Dr. Porier to discuss how pastors can engage with the the common sexual sins of our modern age. In this powerful episode of The Super Human Life, Coach Frank Rich sits down with author and licensed professional counselor Michael John Cusick to explore the deep connection between addiction, intimacy, and the search for God. Michael unpacks how pornography creates an illusion of connection while masking a deeper longing for intimacy. He reveals how all addictions can be seen as a pursuit of false intimacy and discusses the critical role that community plays in healing. The conversation also delves into the impact of mother wounds on men's relationships and their susceptibility to addiction, as well as the common misconception that marriage can "fix" addiction. Michael shares his personal journey from addiction to healing, offering wisdom for men navigating shame, trauma, and emotional disconnection. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking true freedom from addiction and emotional struggles. Michael emphasizes the importance of connection, vulnerability, and identity in the healing process, while also addressing the unique challenges individuals face within faith communities. Key Takeaways: ✅ Addiction is often a symptom of a deeper longing—one rooted in the search for connection and meaning ✅ Sexual desire is tied to a longing for transcendence and union with God. ✅ Pornography offers an illusion of intimacy but lacks real connection. ✅ Many addictions stem from a need for false intimacy. ✅ Community is essential for true recovery and transformation. ✅ Platforms like OnlyFans create a deceptive sense of real relationships. ✅ Mother wounds can drive men toward unhealthy sources of tenderness and validation. ✅ Marriage does not automatically resolve addiction—healing is a journey of self-discovery and connection. ✅ Sobriety is different from freedom; true freedom is a change in desire, not just behavior. ✅ Shame is one of the biggest barriers to healing and must be addressed for real transformation. About Michael John Cusick Michael John Cusick is a Licensed Professional Counselor, spiritual director, speaker, and author dedicated to helping men find true healing from addiction and emotional struggles. His books include Sacred Attachment: Escaping Spiritual Exhaustion and Trusting in Divine Love and Surfing for God: Discovering the Divine Desire Beneath Sexual Struggle. As the founder of Restoring the Soul, Michael equips Christian leaders and individuals worldwide with transformational healing practices. He has also served as a professor at Denver Seminary and Colorado Christian University. Holding two master's degrees in Pastoral Counseling and Counseling Psychology, Michael brings both professional expertise and personal experience to his work. He lives in Littleton, Colorado, with his wife and enjoys yoga, hiking, and trail running in the Rocky Mountains.

What up, Beasts? Welcome back to the show. Today I am hanging out with Jonna Rachele Garvin. Jonna is an ordained Baptist minister and a board-certified chaplain with The Association of Professional Chaplains.  She has experience as a healthcare chaplain, serving in both hospital and hospice settings, a therapist, and a pastoral counselor.   She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from Michigan State University, her Master of Science in Patient Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University, her Master of Divinity from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, and her PhD in Neumann University's Pastoral Counseling program.  Jonna's interests include spirituality, supporting individuals through bereavement, and finding meaningful ways to enhance personal and professional resilience through identifying inner resources and wisdom.   In this episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with Jonna to hear her deeply personal journey into chaplaincy. She shared how the loss of her aunt inspired her path and her passion for helping others navigate life's toughest moments. We talked about the importance of trusting yourself and embracing growth at every stage of life. Together, we explored how generational perspectives shape our views on age, life transitions, and self-discovery. Jonna's insights about anchor people and practices were so meaningful, reminding me how vital it is to have those grounding forces during life's big shifts. We also dove into the ever-present challenge of balancing work and personal life, especially in this always-connected world. Jonna and I reflected on the pressures of "hustle culture" and why prioritizing rest, creativity, and self-care is crucial. We laughed about the different ways we approach transitions in our twenties versus our forties—how we lean on external support when we're younger and rely more on our inner wisdom as we grow. To wrap up, Jonna read Rumi's The Guest House, a beautiful reminder to welcome every experience, even the hard ones, as part of our growth. It left me feeling inspired and reflective—I think it will do the same for you. As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs on your heart-strings and/or I hope you laugh. *Disclaimer* This episode is not intended for young ears.   Top Ten from 2023 #2 Tremendous Testimony and Adding Spark into Your Marriage with David & Terri Sumlin   James 4:8 (NKJV) "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."   Questions/Topics We Discuss: As it so often happens, What the enemy meant for evil, God used for your good. How did He begin to do that? What are some practical things we can be doing in our own relationships to prioritize and delight in our marriages? What specific stories can you share to encourage married couples and parents?   David and Terri Sumlin are co-founders of Marriage Life Ministries and authors of the Oneness of Marriage®, Intimacy of Marriage®, and Marriage Innovators Workshop® series designed to help couples enrich their marriages through the application of biblical principles and adventure-based learning. They both have served over the last 18 years as international marriage educators, retreat leaders, pastoral counselors, and conference speakers.   Their unique approach to marital education is built upon some of the advances found in neuroscience, psychology, physiology, and adventure-based therapy, which ultimately is tested through the lens of God's word for validation. The result is an Activity-Based Marital Enrichment process that helps couples derive behavioral transformation and sustained learning. Couples who participate in these types of marital enrichment programs are 84% more likely to report having increased levels of marital satisfaction long after the program has ended.   David is a native Texan and earned his bachelor's degree in finance from the University of North Texas. He served as a management consultant with the American Productivity & Quality Center and later as an executive for Hewlett Packard. In 2002, after sensing God's call to enter full-time vocational ministry, David enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary to pursue a master's degree in biblical counseling as well as a doctorate in marriage and family ministry.  Upon graduating from DTS, he received his call to pastor a church in northwest Houston for seven years before serving as a full-time marriage educator.   Terri was born in Ashland, Kentucky.  She earned her bachelor's degree in Education from the University of North Texas.  Upon graduating, Terri has been blessed with a 23-year career as an English teacher.  Terri is a leader in women's ministry and serves full-time alongside David in their combined marriage and family ministry.   David and Terri currently live in Houston, TX and will celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary this year.  They have two children, a son Robin and a daughter Morgan who married the love of her life, Zach and gave the Sumlin's their first grandson, Brooks and granddaughter Sadie.   The Types of Marital Programs that we offer are three-fold.  Marriage Adventures are 7-day high adrenaline programs that include white-water rafting, challenge courses, and other high adventure activities designed to engage the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral parts of marital enrichment. Marriage Outbacks provide much of the same experiential-based learning objectives as our Adventure programs except that it is condensed into a weekend version where couples rough it in the great outdoors. The third type of program that we offer is our romantic Marriage Getaways hosted in intimate locations around the world.   Conferences, Workshops, & Pastoral Counseling.  In addition to our highly successful marital enrichment programs, we also facilitate marital education for churches, small groups, and organizations in both large conference and intimate workshop venues. In addition, we offer pastoral marriage support and pre-marital counseling on a case-by-case basis.   Marriage Life Ministries   Thank You to Our Sponsor: Dream Seller Travel, Megan Rokey   Connect with The Savvy Sauce through Our Website   Please help us out by sharing this episode with a friend, leaving a 5-star rating and review, and subscribing to this podcast!   Gospel Scripture: (all NIV)   Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”   Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”   Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.”    Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”    Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”    Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”    John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”   Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”    Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”   Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”   Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

"Holiness consists simply in doing God's will, and being just what God wants us to be."~ St. Thérèse of LisieuxThis Whole Life returns to its roots! In episode 46, Kenna is joined by Fr. Marc Foley, OCD, author of the seminal work that led to this very podcast: The Love That Keeps Us Sane: Living the Little Way of St. Thérèse of Lisieux.  Together, Kenna and Fr. Marc delve into the complexities of human nature and God's work in the midst of our messy thoughts, emotions, and relationships. As Fr. Marc explains, St. Thérèse of Lisieux is far more relevant to our 21st century experience than we might initially think. In preparation for our upcoming book study (episodes 47 & 48) on The Love That Keeps Us Sane, Fr. Marc shares insights from his extensive psychological and spiritual experience, emphasizing the value of patience with oneself while working toward greater virtue. The discussion covers topics such as resisting the temptation to create a perfect persona, managing the balance between acceptance without complacency, and interpreting human experiences from a spiritual perspective. We live in a fallen, and often insane, world; it is the love of God lived through us every day that keeps us sane.Fr. Marc Foley, O.C.D. entered the Discalced Carmelites in 1967 as a lay brother and was ordained a priest in 1981. He studied psychology at the Catholic University of America and continued on to receive a Master of Divinity. He later earned M.S. and CAS degrees in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola College in Baltimore. Fr. Foley has served as a parish priest, a postulant director, a director of formation, and a professor. Fr. Marc is currently the prior of the Carmelite monastery in Washington, D.C., a spiritual director, an author, and the publisher of ICS Publications. Parenting is hard...ever wish you had a guidebook for it? Dr. Randy Schroeder joins us to share the top takeaways from his book, Simple Habits for Effective Parenting. You won't want to miss this!  Bio: Dr. Randy Schroeder wrote the 2020 three-time national award-winning Christian marriage book, Simple Habits for Marital Happiness. The only marriage book that provides practical, specific words, actions, and essential knowledge in the seven major areas of a relationship to help every couple achieve a gratifying marriage. He has helped thousands of spouses achieve a consistently satisfying happy marriage with these simple, yet very effective habits.   His 2021 two-time national award-winning book, Simple Habits for Effective Parenting is the only parenting book that provides detailed guidance in the seven key aspects of parenting. Happy, confident children driven to reach their full potential with self-motivation, good decision-making skills, a positive attitude, and determination are raised by parents who use these simple successful habits.    Dr. Schroeder joined Jim Daly, President, and John Fuller, Vice President, on FOCUS ON THE FAMILY national broadcasts for six interviews: Simple Habits to Embrace in Your Marriage – January (BEST of 2022); Forming New Habits for Your Marriage I – September 2022; Forming New Habits for Your Marriage II – September 2022; Effective Habits to Embrace in Parenting – July (BEST of 2021); More Effective Habits to Embrace in Parenting I – November 2022; and More Effective Habits to Embrace in Parenting II – November 2022. These six FOCUS ON THE FAMILY interviews can be found on YouTube.    Dr. Schroeder was born and raised in Austin, Texas.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University Chicago and received a Master of Education in Administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.  He also earned a Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana and holds a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from The Chicago Theological Seminary.    The first eight years of his professional career were spent as a Lutheran high school teacher, assistant principal, athletic director, and head varsity basketball and football coach. In 1982, after eight years as an educator, he felt called to serve the Lord as an LCMS pastor and left the teaching ministry to prepare for the pastoral ministry.   After graduating from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1986, Dr. Schroeder became a Professor of Pastoral Counseling, Vice President of Student Personnel Services, and Dean of Students.  For nearly 25 years he taught pastoral counseling classes including Premarital Counseling, Marriage Counseling, Family Counseling, Crisis Counseling, Ministry to the Sick & Dying, and Pastor as Counselor. He also wrote a Family Counselor column for the Lutheran Witness magazine for 15 years.    In 2010, after being an educator for 36 years, he strongly desired to serve God and others as a full-time Christian counselor to help individuals, marriages, and families with the practical wisdom that makes a profound positive difference.  Dr. Schroeder is a Marriage and Family Counselor and has a successful practice at Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Carmel, Indiana.   For over four decades, Dr. Schroeder has spoken to and counseled thousands of individuals, spouses, and parents about the simple, yet effective habits that are essential for an enjoyable life, a happy marriage, and for effectively parenting a child. Dr. Schroeder believes a lack of valuable knowledge about specific practical words, actions, and skills, not a lack of desire, is what holds people back from accomplishing their individual, marriage, parenting, and relationship goals.    Randy and his wife, Ginny, have been married since 1975 and have two married sons and seven grandchildren.
