In this episode of the Hungarian Living podcast I read a Hungarian folk tale that my mom translated into English. She loved writing, especially for children. She really wanted to publish a book of Hungarian folk tales translated into English and was working on it in the 1960’s. A member of the BVK (German Society of Cinematographers), Matthias was born in Austria and worked as a camera assistant in Austria and Germany before attending AFI in Los Angeles. Matthias' film projects include Andrew Bujalski's debut feature Funny Ha Ha, and the acclaimed Computer Chess, as well as Nights and Weekends, for Greta Gerwig and Joe Swanberg. More recently, he shot the feature Support the Girls, again for Andrew Bujalski, Saints Rest, and the television historical drama Defiance. Three Women and the Vote.

Hawk Mountain is located in central-eastern Pennsylvania near Allentown and is known for a wild bird sanctuary. What it is less known for is the story of Matthias Schaumboch, America's unofficial first serial killer. On his deathbed, he confessed to the murder of 11 people, all weary travelers that would stop at this tavern for the night, but would never check out. He would peddle their belongings after he murdered them, and even reportedly ground them up for sausages for the next guests that arrived. In his deathbed confession, he claimed that an evil spirit on the mountain whispered to him day and night, encouraging him to act on murderous impulses. Many believe that Matthias' ghost still haunts the area, and people have heard voices and seen phantom lights in the hills. Full body apparitions have even been spotted. A little more disconcerting is the report of a 10 foot tall glowing man seen roaming the woods who instills absolute terror in those that observe him.What haunts Hawk Mountain? Sure, a character's past can be revealing and interesting...but describing their surroundings can even lend context to flashbacks, letting us know how far they've come (or not) and whether the circumstances of their pasts are unusual or de rigeur. I'm kind of into Nina, because she's a Grisha and we haven't had a main character of that class yet, and because she's just such a good actress and liar. I'm always a fan of characters like that because they can lead to really fun hijinks, and I'm interested to see if her skills in that arena come into play at all. Also, I'm dying to know what she did to make Matthias' first act upon waking an attempt to strangle her to death. In this epsiode, my friend Nici Eberl joins my show. She is a fellow Austrian photographer who moved to London and she was one of the first followers of my project HTBARP. Nici started from scratch and told me “I kept watching the photographers in the photo pit and dreamed of being one of them, but I never felt good enough and was too shy to present my work.” After following my project for a while and completing my academy www.shootingtherockstars.com her life changed dramatically and she said “After completing Matthias' training I became the house photographer of the O2 Forum, got published in Kerrang! and had over 300 bands in front of my lens.”
