On this episode, two more contributors to our book talk about their chapters on equality, inclusion, and compassion. Travis Prinzi and Mark-Anthony Lewis join Katy and Emily to discuss how the wizarding world serves as a lens through which to understand the social ethics of our own world, particularly amid racial tensions and diversity. Travis's chapter, "The Problem with Loving Enemies: Kindness and Oppression in 'The Wizard and the Hopping Pot,'" and Mark-Anthony's chapter, "Uncle Remus's Shack: Tokenism in the Wizarding World," both examine how we respond to people who are different from us. For Travis, studying critical race theory in education while rereading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in preparation for the release of the final book made him see systemic prejudice in the wizarding world in new ways. It was house-elf slavery and the discussions around it that made Mark-Anthony think deeply about how their oppression came about. Travis sees the seemingly simple fairy tale of "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot" take on completely new meaning when put in the historical context Dumbledore provides in The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Mark-Anthony applies W.E.B. Du Bois's idea of "twoness" to magical minorities, some of whom have a literal "twoness" as hybrid beings like centaur and merpeople. How can we use the wizarding world to find solutions to the challenge of social and racial equality in our own world? For a start, we can confront our fear of the unknown and embrace the freedom to be wrong - and learn from it.

Dane Chalfin is a commercial vocal coach working with high level performers in the West End, TV and Film and the recording industry. Dane has been working in voice clinics since 2003 as a voice rehabilitation specialist with contracts across the NHS and a private consultant for a number of ENT clinics…..there is nothing he doesn't know about putting a camera up your nose! Dane talks about the complexity of the voice, in particular the differences between other physical injuries such as a broken leg and an injured voice. There is a vast difference between how we and others around us treat these injuries.Dane is a huge advocate for ‘multidisciplinary' work when it comes to dealing with vocal issues and explains why it is essential for all the teams involved to communicate.Dane shares his thoughts about the post covid vocal world and why some performers may be experiencing difficulties. He generously shares some gems on what to do to begin that strengthening process and the signs to look out for should you feel you need further support. It's mind blowing some of the little things that perhaps we may not have thought would affect us so much! From singing on zoom, to practising at home (when our neighbours may not be too keen) to the best line ever, when despairing at our lack of vocal stamina as the theatres began to reopen….. “there is no substitute for 8 shows a week!” Ain't that the truth!Dane's tips are always the best. Sadly, in the chat, he doesn't wear a cloak or have a long white beard, but he is affectionately known as 'The Wizard', and I can vouch for that, he truly is! He's also a lovely and supportive person!Get your pencil and paper out and take notes he really is the best in the biz!Enjoy!Helpful resources that Dane mentions:BAPAM - https://www.bapam.org.uk/Help Musicians UK - https://www.helpmusicians.org.uk/Royal Society of Musicians - https://www.rsmgb.org/ Hosted on Acast. In a circus you see lions, tigers and bears. To borrow what may be the 2nd most famous line from the 1939 classic 'The Wizard of Oz”, Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! We see the ferocious roar of the lion as the lion tamer bravely stands before him without fear. We are shown the height of the “World's Largest Bear”. But, I never seen a commercial that said, “Come see the sheep!”. Sheep are vulnerable to danger from wolves and other wild animals as they cannot run very fast. They are not smart enough to avoid danger. That is why they require a shepherd. And David begins the 23rd Psalm with these 9 words, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want”.

In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Jen Gardiner. Canadian actress, Jen Gardiner was born on March 13, 1984 in Kitchener, Canada and grew up in Wellesley, Ontario, Canada. Jen is best known for her role as Modwenna in 'Martyrs - The Chronicles of The Blood'. Growing up she always had a love for the arts but dreamed of becoming a doctor. Equal parts science nerd, artist and athlete she spent her elementary school years playing sports (soccer being her favourite), participating in musicals such as 'Oliver Twist' and 'The Wizard of Oz and learning as much as she could about the field of medicine. In high school the majority of her courses were geared towards becoming a doctor but her love for the arts and sports continued. She became the yearbook photographer and was constantly involved with choirs and the band which performed through-out Canada and the United States. She also took media studies, was involved in drama club and of course every year continued to play on a soccer team. Fast forward to after high-school, Jen was in a Michael's craft-store with her Mom and saw an advertisement for cake-decorating classes. She started taking cake decorating classes as a hobby. Soon after her cakes were becoming so sought after it ended up turning into a career. She opened her first business at the age of 20 and from there built two successful businesses over the course of 15 years (one teaching online marketing from things she learned from her cake business and one for “done-for-you” cakes). Something still was missing though. So Jen started to pay heed to the same advice she gave her marketing clients that she coached, "What makes you come alive?" In this episode we discuss acting, changing paths, finding your passion, transformation, mindset shift and fear of judgement.
