Marcie Begleiter, an artist based on the Central Coast of California, talks about: artist residencies, including the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, where she recently did a 4-week residency, including collecting biological specimens/samples; how her time and relationship with the residency evolves over those four weeks, which has lead to artistic breakthroughs; how she likes deadlines, and can structure her residency experience with the clock ticking and puts extra focus on what she's doing, and in addition having the support of the people running the residencies; the importance of the artist statement in applications for residencies; what her experience was like at Sitka, from where she stayed (at an offsite house as opposed to the onsite cabins) to how she spent her days and nights, and what her studio days are like on a residency vs. the studio where she lives; why she left New York (Manhattan) for, initially Taos, N.M., and eventually California (essentially she needed more access to nature); and the interdisciplinary program she started at Otis College of Art that focuses on social change in the community.  In the 2nd half of our conversation, which is available on our Patreon page, she talks about: how she's restarting the local CERT (citizen's emergency response training) training in her unincorporated town (of Los Osos, CA), partially inspired by not having much access out of her area in an emergency; how she and her husband came to leaving Los Angeles for Los Osos, back in 2015/16, after she toured extensively with her documentary on the artist Eva Hesse; the benefits of living in a small town (Los Osos) which she prefers to city life; the lucky circumstances of having a great studio space in a location where you wouldn't expect great studios; why she vastly prefers a studio outside her home; she breaks down the different type of residencies: 1) fully funded plus stipends…2) fully funded, no stipend….3) highly subsidized…4) paying full ride; and finally, she addresses our standard finishing questions: how does she feel like social media in this moment, and how success is defined across various careers in the arts.

Claims Sub-Standard Infrastructure Hindering Shannon Estuary Tourism

It's claimed sub-standard infrastructure is proving a major hindrance to tourism in the Shannon Estuary Region. It follows calls for a new council led strategy to increase marine based visitor attractions in Clare. The 102km area is shared between predominantly Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Tipperary and welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year. However, concern has been raised that there's been too much emphasis on land based attractions, at the expense of opening up more water based opportunities. In response, Clare County Council has pointed to an over €4m investment in the Vandeleur Walled Gardens, remedial works on Scattery Island and upgraded signage on the EuroVelo cycle route. Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says the roads in West Clare serving the route are not fit for international tourists , but that the lack of facilities for visitors to launch boats on the estuary is proving a huge hindrance. The spotlight has also been shone on the opportunities for adjacent villages from tourists landing at Shannon Airport. Last year alone over 344,000 visitors attended Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, while the Ilaunmanagh Park Run welcomes UK participants on a weekly basis. Newmarket-On-Fergus Councillor David Griffin believes incorporating local water based attractions can enhance this.

Sarah Swadling is on the Otter estuary in Devon where the clock has been turned back 200 years to tackle climate change challenges of the present, and of the future. The sea has been allowed back onto farmland that had been reclaimed during the Napoleonic war era. The result is a new salt marsh and mudflat nature reserve. It's hoped letting the estuary return to its natural course will reduce the risk of flooding for homes and businesses. As Sarah hears, the ambitious project also meant raising a road, moving the local cricket club, and making an historic landfill safe. She asks the landowner, Clinton Devon Estates, how they weighed up climate change mitigation against food security, in deciding to flood the farmland.Produced and presented by Sarah Swadling.

Chamber President Noel Gavin calls on the next government to tackle issues at UHL, and to do more for housing and energy The President of Limerick Chamber has said a lack of clear progress and a slow pace of policy development is hindering health, housing and the energy sector in the Mid-West region. Noel Gavin was speaking at the annual Limerick Chamber President's Dinner and Regional Business Awards at the Strand Hotel in Limerick on Friday night, which was attended by Taoiseach Simon Harris. Noel Gavin said it's important not to become complacent by focusing only on the positive indicators of a buoyant Irish economy. Mr Gavin said: "University Hospital Limerick continues to make headlines for the wrong reasons, housing completions are falling short, and there is a visible absence of policing in many towns and cities. These are critical priorities for the Chamber, and we need a strong signal from decision-makers that they are equally prioritised by the Government. Additionally, the slow pace of policy development for harnessing renewable energy off the West Coast is concerning. Implementing a Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP) for the West Coast is critical. From 2030, Ireland faces €8 billion in annual fines if we fail to meet our emissions and renewable energy targets. A 'do nothing' approach will cost us €8 billion a year - so we urge the incoming Government to adopt the 'do something' approach and move forward with DMAPs. This is not only essential for energy security but also for ensuring Ireland remains an attractive location for investment." Delivering his keynote address, Taoiseach Simon Harris described the Mid-West region as 'vibrant, innovative and dynamic' and commended the Chamber for the support it provides to businesses in the region, noting in particular the challenges faced by small businesses. Commenting on the work of the Limerick Chamber in driving business forward in the Mid-West, Noel Gavin said he takes 'immense pride' in its proactive role in advocating for the growth and development of the region through initiatives such as its Energy on the Estuary events, the Better Regions Initiative and its active participation on the Shannon Estuary Economic Task Force. The Overall Business of the Year went to DesignPro Automation, which delivers bespoke solutions for clients across the medical devices, robotics and automotive industries, while the President's Award went to Milford Care Centre, which provides specialist palliative care and older persons services in the Mid-West. There were seven category winners across a broad range of industries. Michelle Gallagher, CEO of Limerick Chamber, said: "We're delighted to shine a light on the successes of all our winners and finalists. These businesses are part of the fabric of this great region, and it's important for them to get independent recognition and validation from our panel of judges. I'd like to extend a huge congratulations to everyone here tonight on an exceptional year in business." Damien Garrihy, AIB Business Banking Limerick and Clare, Sponsor of the President's Dinner and SME Partner, said: "It's great to see first-hand the phenomenal achievements of the nominated businesses year upon year and the invaluable support provided to them by Limerick Chamber. However, there are significant challenges facing businesses in the region, particularly in the SME sector, and we would call on the new government to deliver more support in the face of high costs and other external pressures in order for them to not only survive but thrive. SMEs are the backbone of the Irish economy and we need to ensure their future is safe in Limerick and across the country." Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS and sponsor of the overall Business of the Year Award, said: "TUS plays a vital role in fostering emerging businesses in the Midwest. We believe that keeping young people in the region and offering them top-class educational and training opportunities is the ke...

The city jointly manages the Yaquina Bay Estuary with Lincoln County and the city of Toledo. The three entities use the plan to determine what kind of development can happen in what parts of the estuary.  The updated version requires developers to perform climate vulnerability assessments for all projects in the estuary. It also includes a commitment from Newport city leaders to revisit the plan and update it periodically as the estuary faces new climate impacts, such as rising sea levels and warming ocean temperatures.  Annie Merrill is the estuaries and ocean manager for the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition. Welcome to this final intermission of August 2024, a specially blended episode of soundscapes from wild and exposed places taken from the last year of Lento. The first three sound-scenes reveal aural views of the outside world seen from within interior places. A coastal hotel room, the belfry of an ancient church, and inside a bird hide. The final sound-scene is of an exposed estuary by Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex, and a slow passing ship. Each portrays the essences of wild places.   214 Storm over hotel peninsula A birds ear view over Plymouth in the far south west of England. This is how Storm Kathleen sounded from behind the huge plate glass window of a comfortable cushioned room on the fourth floor of a hotel. The hotel overlooks a district called The Hoe, where one of the original Eddystone Lighthouses now stands. the wind was fierce, whistling almost singing through the window seals. A blended soundscape, formed from the interior acoustic of the hotel room and the wide open windswept night beyond.  200 Windswept night in the belfry of Rye Church Up steep ladders on the top platform of the belfry inside Rye Church, the ancient clock counts through this small night hour. Its regular sound blends with long and undulating gusts of fresh sea air. Air that's travelled, over miles of sand, shingle and marshland, from out on the open sea. Moving air sighs between the shuttered rafters and rattles the steel flagpole outside on the castellated parapet wall. Knocks the dead weight of a loose slab of stonework out on the belfry roof.  194 Inside a bird hide The atmosphere inside a bird hide is quite unusual, as interior spaces go. Low wind moaning in the drooping wires between telegraph poles. Whispering rushes and siffing seed heads of marsh grasses. Indistinguishable shifting murmurings, of the surrounding landscape, blown in through low letterbox windows. To the ear there is a lot of outside to be heard inside a bird hide. A fleeting curlew. A humming propeller plane. A distant pair of passing footsteps on the gravel towpath.  196 Estuary bleak passing ship Warm inside an all-weather coat and facing out across the water. Sat, boots wedged against the top ridge of the slanted seawall. There's rain in the air. Time to take in this wild estuary place. Right of scene the small Essex town of Burnham-on-Crouch. Directly ahead across the water Wallasea Island. Left of scene wild swirling water stretches seven miles to the North Sea. Sit tight, here on the seawall. This is empty time, to listen to the landscape and a slow passing ship.

Chris Bowser is a professional educator and environmental scientist with experience in citizen science, estuary and river monitoring, conservation biology, and fisheries science. Part of Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, he coordinates a team with NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program and Hudson River Estuarine Research Reserve. He joins the Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley team with a passionate discussion about the Hudson River Estuary. An estuary is defined as the tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream. If you think of New York's Hudson River, this covers a lot of territory. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, estuaries are among the most productive of Earth's ecosystems. Native Americans discovered the Hudson's bounty thousands of years ago; evidence of their existence remains in heaps of oyster shells on its shores. Hudson and Dutch traders wrote of a river teeming with striped bass, herring, and giant sturgeon. More than 200 species of fish are found in the Hudson and its tributaries. The estuary's productivity is ecologically and economically valuable to much of the Atlantic Coast; key commercial and recreational species like striped bass, bluefish, and blue crab depend on nursery habitat here. Bald eagles, herons, waterfowl, and other birds feed from the river's bounty. Tidal marshes, mudflats, and other significant habitats in and along the estuary support a great diversity of life. The Hudson River Estuary has one of the largest concentrations of freshwater wetlands in the northeastern part of the United States. It has also been found that due to climate change, the rising sea levels have led to an increase in the area of the wetlands. Chris brings the Hudson River to ‘life' not only talking about what can be found within it, but also about the wide range of programs to adults and children to help everyone become more acquainted with its value to our broader ecosystem. Just 30 years ago, Manhattan's west side shoreline was marked by decaying piers and dilapidated buildings left when the shipping industry moved out of the city. Today, the Hudson River Park stretches four miles along New York City and the piers have become playgrounds, paths, concert venues, and places to bike, walk, kayak and play volleyball. Listen to the story of this unique park, and how a partnership between the city and state of New York, along with residents and donors, transformed the prized waterfront space. Martha interviews Connie Fishman, Executive Director of Hudson River Park Friends and Carrie Roble, Vice President Estuary and Education for the Hudson River Park Trust, in this enlightening conversation about preserving our public spaces.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
