The waves settle into wavelets. The wavelets settle to calm. Then it's just the pure sound of estuary emptiness, at night. Following on from episode 288 it's several hours later, about 4 in the morning, and the tide has finally turned along the exposed seawall opposite Wallasea Island. The soundscape captured conveys the aural essences of this beautifully exposed and empty place. Near-scene the movements of tidal water. Mid-scene the occasional calls of hardy sea birds flying low through the night air. To right of scene the distant low hum of a bulk carrier ship, recently arrived, waiting in port to be unloaded. The night before we'd scouted the area and tied the mics to a railing well above the high water mark. However due to a combination of tidal surge and a spring tide, the section of railing only just remained dry. Luckily the Lento box survived to capture a uniquely fascinating sound. The intricate and changing movements of estuary water, close-up, against a backdrop of pristine estuary quiet. * We made this recording in August 2021, after discovering the River Crouch and the estuary landscape around Wallasea Island. The weather conditions were unseasonably rainy and windy at the time which has made these rain-free sections of the 12 hour overnight recording seem even more special.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation sponsored by Rep. Shomari C. Figures (DAla.) to reauthorize the Environmental Protection Agency's National Estuary Program through 2031. The ESTUARIES Act would extend funding for the program for five years and add the Mississippi Sound to the list of estuaries eligible for priority consideration. Figures, who represents Alabama's Second Congressional District, is the first freshman Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to lead a standalone bill through committee and secure its passage by the full House. Real-time data is no longer a future problem. At Small Data SF by MotherDuck, I sat down with David Yaffe, Co-Founder & CEO at Estuary, to talk about what has changed in the world of data streaming!!!!A few years ago, real-time data was something most teams put on their “later” list. Expensive. Hard to scale. Too complex for most use cases. But as David shared, that story has shifted fast. Here are some takeaways from our conversation:- Streaming is now viable for everyoneWith cheaper compute, mature tooling, and simpler developer experiences, real-time data isn't a luxury anymore. The barriers that once made it a niche capability are gone- Batch vs Real-time: Asking the right questionsBefore jumping to streaming, David suggests asking what problems you're solving — speed for the sake of speed rarely pays off. Sometimes batch is just fine. The goal is fit, not flash- Architecture mattersMoving from batch to streaming means thinking end-to-end: from schema evolution and error handling to observability. Teams that skip this planning end up redoing pipelines- CDC done rightChange Data Capture is powerful, but it's easy to misuse. The most common mistake? Treating CDC as an ETL replacement rather than an event system. Understanding that difference prevents pain later- The conversation was practical, focused, and refreshing.Real-time isn't about chasing trends, it's about enabling faster insights and cleaner data movement with less friction. If you've been wondering when “real-time” becomes realistic, this one will give you a clear answer.#data #ai #motherduck #smalldatasf #theravitshow
Tied to a railing, the Lento box records alone. It's about two in the morning along the river bank east of Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex. Wind is blowing inland from the east, light, gusting to moderate. Sky dark, and heavy with cloud. Huge rainclouds are approaching, currently located out over the North Sea. When they arrive this whole area will be subjected to long periods of persistent, often squally rain, lasting well into the next day. For now though the Lento box is dry. Its microphones capturing just the sound of the incoming tide as it steadily advances up the seawall. Angled directly towards Wallasea Island, the expanse of estuary water between the seawall and the opposite bank of the River Crouch can be heard as a wide and spatial backdrop. Throughout this 30 minute passage of nocturnal time, the way the water plays along the seawall constantly develops and evolves. Sometimes individual waves form into resonant airpockets, producing fleetingly melodic notes. Wave energies surge and dissipate, surge and dissipate, edging closer and closer to the microphones on the rising tide. What's consistent is the timbre of the water as it washes over the rippled ridges of the seawall. To us silvery. Each individual wave captured in sharp spatial detail that you can experience in full using headphones or AirPods. At twenty three minutes an aircraft approaches from the east and passes over Wallasea Island. From left to right of scene. Reveals across the empty void of the sky how human activity can still be heard over this otherwise wild and empty landscape. * This sound photograph of the tidal River Crouch comes from a twelve hour non-stop overnight recording we made back in August 2021. For more sections of time from this same location please browse the Lento archive.

Kilrush RNLI is hailing the outcome of a search operation in the Shannon Estuary as an "outstanding result". The West Clare lifeboat station was one of a number of agencies involved in the search yesterday which commenced shortly after 9am when a person was reported "overboard" from the Killimer to Tarbert ferry. After being spotted by the crew of the Rescue 117 helicopter shortly before 11am, the man was brought to University Hospital Limerick where he's being treated for "severe hypothermia" and is understood to be recovering well. Kilrush RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer Charlie Glynn has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons it was an extremely successful operation and credit is due to all bodies involved.

Send us a textInlet Dance Theatre is a modern dance company in Cleveland, founded in 2001 by our guest, Bill Wade, a renowned dancer and choreographer who uses the power of dance to further people and explore human, societal, and environmental issues through movement. Located within the Pivot Center for Art, Dance and Expression on West 25th Street in Cleveland, Inlet's Dance Studio is called The Estuary, reflecting the company's nature-based and sustainability themes. Inlet's mission aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, which promote health and well-being, quality education, equality, and sustainable cities. Deeply rooted in Cleveland, Inlet is helping nurture and grow the next generation of artists by offering free dance classes in public schools and other community programs. Bill explains that talent is everywhere, but access to developing that talent is not. He started Inlet to expose urban youth to the power of the arts and provide opportunities, mentorship, and creative expression to individuals who might otherwise lack access. The connection between dance and sustainability may seem unexpected, but the arts are universally relatable and offer a unique opportunity to promote environmental awareness. "Don't put on stage what is. Put on stage what could be," Wade says, capturing how art contributes to sustainability by envisioning possibilities rather than dwelling on problems. In a world facing climate change and social inequities, Inlet Dance Theater reminds us that sustainability isn't just technical solutions – it requires creative spaces where we can collectively imagine and embody more hopeful futures.Enjoy this episode of Eco Speaks CLE as Bill describes his work, his creative process, some of the pieces in his repertoire, his love of Cleveland and its youth, and upcoming appearances for his company. Marcie Begleiter, an artist based on the Central Coast of California, talks about: artist residencies, including the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, where she recently did a 4-week residency, including collecting biological specimens/samples; how her time and relationship with the residency evolves over those four weeks, which has lead to artistic breakthroughs; how she likes deadlines, and can structure her residency experience with the clock ticking and puts extra focus on what she's doing, and in addition having the support of the people running the residencies; the importance of the artist statement in applications for residencies; what her experience was like at Sitka, from where she stayed (at an offsite house as opposed to the onsite cabins) to how she spent her days and nights, and what her studio days are like on a residency vs. the studio where she lives; why she left New York (Manhattan) for, initially Taos, N.M., and eventually California (essentially she needed more access to nature); and the interdisciplinary program she started at Otis College of Art that focuses on social change in the community. In the 2nd half of our conversation, which is available on our Patreon page, she talks about: how she's restarting the local CERT (citizen's emergency response training) training in her unincorporated town (of Los Osos, CA), partially inspired by not having much access out of her area in an emergency; how she and her husband came to leaving Los Angeles for Los Osos, back in 2015/16, after she toured extensively with her documentary on the artist Eva Hesse; the benefits of living in a small town (Los Osos) which she prefers to city life; the lucky circumstances of having a great studio space in a location where you wouldn't expect great studios; why she vastly prefers a studio outside her home; she breaks down the different type of residencies: 1) fully funded plus stipends…2) fully funded, no stipend….3) highly subsidized…4) paying full ride; and finally, she addresses our standard finishing questions: how does she feel like social media in this moment, and how success is defined across various careers in the arts.
