Interview by Kris PetersA band who transcend genre and have transfixed fans across the globe since emerging in 2003, ENTER SHIKARI weave an unforgettable blend of post hardcore rock and electronic wizardry, while also flying the flag for meaningful lyricism that spans politics, climate change and the very gamut of the human experience.During their remarkable and celebrated career, Enter Shikari have received several accolades in the form of gongs from NME, Kerrang!, Rock Sound, Heavy Music Awards and more. They have played a whopping 3000+ live shows around the world including three headline arena tours in the UK, supported the likes of The Prodigy and Linkin Park and played festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Download and Slam Dunk where they also headlined in 2023.And now it's Australia's turn, as Enter Shikari ready for their first headline tour of this country since 2022 on the back of dropping their most recent album, Lose Your Self, as a well kept secret with no singles, no promotion. Nothing. A band who have never been afraid to shun convention, Enter Shikari remain as fresh and relevant today as when they first burst onto the scene in 2003. HEAVY took the opportunity to chat with frontman Rou Reynolds ahead of the tour, starting by asking if he is packed and ready to fly. "Getting there," he laughed. "We're all very excited to get back to Australia. It's one of our favourite places to play."Australian fans got to see Enter Shikari live earlier last year as part of Knotfest 2025, so we ask Rou what has changed with the band since that tour."Oh, blimey," he countered. "We finished up our record and released that. That was a long, arduous process (smiles). All sorts of life stuff has been going on… It's been all change really. But at the same time it doesn't feel like that long ago we were in Australia but that's an example of how quickly time seems to ebb away at the moment (laughs)."Talk turns to last months unconventional release of Enter Shikari's new album Lose Your Self, which was granted no advance publicity or convential single release schedule and was instead set forth on the world to little fanfare and much surprise. We ask Rou about the thought process behind such a potentially risky move."I think once we finished the album we really saw it as a body of work; as one entity," he replied, choosing his words carefully. "And that was kind of a shock really, because the album was recorded in such a disjointed way over a long period of time. There was a worry that it wouldn't come together as one solid body of work but it did, quite effortlessly. At that point we were trying to think how did we want to release this and we basically just thought it would be a credit to the art of it if we just released it. How do we want people to approach this album? How do we want them to absorb it? And I think the traditional way of releasing three or four singles before a reord just didn't excite us. I think just dropping a record in people's laps forces them to take it in as an album. The focus then becomes not about the hype or trying to make a really successful album. It actually becomes about how do people react to the album? How do people indulge in it and make it their own when they take one body of work and immerse themselves in it. That's really exciting to us."In the full interview Rou talks more about the tour and what we can expect, running us through an Enter Shikari live show and the synergy between the band and the crowd that creates a welcoming and comfortable experience. We spoke more about Lose Your Self and the surprise release, including the changes in approach and pressure the band experienced by not having to meet pre-album obligations and expectations. Rou talked about the darkness inherent in the album material and how it represents Enter Shikari moving forward and much more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. We're talking about Mission bars, and I share a story about the backroom at Delirium. Rae brings up similar stories of her own at places like Thee Parkside, and we agree that Parkside owner Malia Spanyol is the best. Rae shares a story that confirms it. She looks back on the years before she got her SSN grateful that Kerrang! allowed her to work. She says and I agree—those jobs don't really exist anymore. The industry itself was misogynistic, but there was also a freedom to the job. They flew her to shows all over the place. And they paid her enough to live in San Francisco. After Rae recounts a couple of specific incidents of mistreatment she got, we go on a sidebar about the music industry specifically and entertainment industry more generally and how riddled with misogyny they are. Rae managed to get out of music journalism, but it took some time and effort. She says that when folks ask her to write about music nowadays, she recoils. Then we talk about Rae's new book. I share how it all came to me, and that originally it was supposed to be a bonus episode where we talked "only" about Unsung Heroines. After reading the book, I decided it needed to be a feature about this incredible woman who herself should possibly be in her own book. Rae says that if she'd stayed in the UK, the history she'd know and would hear about constantly would revolve around royals and their lives and their wars. So she dropped history. But upon moving to San Francisco, she became curious about everything she saw and heard and read. It felt natural that at some point, she'd spend her curiosity and mental energies writing some sort of history or another. We go on a sidebar here about Emperor Norton and what a troublesome character he was. She was working at KQED writing about pop culture. After about a year, she found herself, as she puts it, "being insufferable in bars to strangers about the fact that women had been written out of history." Writing about history would be a new hat for Rae at KQED, but in 2018, she persuaded her editors to let her write five essays for Women's History Month. The series was a hit. In 2019, her department, Pop Culture, folded and she moved into KQED Arts. She'd written a couple more essays in the interim, but once in the Arts department, she really picked up the pace. In January 2020, Rae decided to turn the essays into a monthly series, upping the pace. The series had come to be known as "Rebel Girls," a Bikini Kill reference. But that March, all the libraries closed when COVID shutdown hit. She pivoted to library websites, but then I prompt Rae to shout out all the libraries she frequented to research her book. The SFPL History Center and the California Historical Society stand out. When I ask about women she researched who didn't make it into the book, she points out that the series, which again predates the book, includes essays about 55 women. City Lights Publishing, who put Unsung Heroines out, settled on 35 for their edition. They wanted a digestible book, and for teen readers, they felt they needed to remove women with … let's just say more risqué stories. I ask Rae to pick three of her favorite essay subjects, and while she's thinking it over, I offer some of my own. I start with Judy Heumann, the disability rights advocate who did so, so much to guarantee the rights of other disabled folks in our country. Rae mentions Judy, whom she'd been researching well before her unfortunate passing in 2023; Ruth Beckford, who figured big in Black Panther history; and Abby Fisher, a formerly enslaved woman who couldn't read or write but, with the help of others, published a cookbook. We take a slight detour as Rae begins to describe how they went about illustrating Abby Fisher and others, for whom there was no photographic or other visual reference. The Unsung Heroines publisher, City Lights, asked her about imagery, and when Rae told them that it's been difficult for her, she suggested illustrations. But City Lights doesn't do illustrated books and told Rae as much. Then City Lights' publisher struck up a conversation with another swimmer at the pool one day. That other swimmer was Adrienne Simms. Following that talk, the publisher found Adrienne's art, brought it to Rae, and the rest of history. Adrienne illustrated Unsung Heroines. I ask Rae not who her favorite heroines are, but of the 35, which one or ones she'd want to join us at Vesuvio that day we recorded. Without hesitation (in fact, I believe she says the name before I finish asking), Rae offers Pat Maginnis, an incredible champion and fighter for women's reproductive rights. Unsung Heroines is available wherever you get books (but please, don't use that one horrible fucking website). City Lights is one obvious choice, but most Bay Area independent bookstores should carry it. If not, ask them to order it for you. More people need to know about and read this book. Follow Rae on Instagram @rae_alexandra_writing. She's on Threads @rae_alexandra3. We end with final thoughts from Rae, specifically her feelings about all those ubiquitous dumb fucking AI billboards.

Rae Alexandra has 35 stories to share with you, plus her own. In this Women's History Month episode, meet and get to know Rae. She recently published a book with City Lights Publishing called Unsung Heroines: 35 Women Who Changed the Bay Area. It's of course available at City Lights, but you can also find it at your local independent bookstore. I read the book and could not put it down. Only toward the end of the 35 essays did I start to recognize the women Rae features. I love history and I love learning and I have mixed feelings about the fact that there are so many rad women whose stories are untold. Thank you, Rae Alexandra, for shining on a light on these incredible women. These days, she's a staff writer at KQED. But Rae's story starts in Wales in the UK. She grew up in Cardiff, the capital of the country. (I learn in the conversation that Wales is a country. I also learn that "United Kingdom" and "Great Britain" are the same thing. Now, British vs. English we don't touch, for obvious reasons. But I digress …) Ed. note: I'll describe my conversation with Rae as two Gen Ex journalist types with ADHD (is that redundant?) doing their best to be linear. To me, the meanderings of our talk are totally normal. Rae says that Wales is delightful and has all the best castles, but that's because of the number times the country has been invaded and conquered. Close to where her mom lives today is a castle that boasts the world's largest crossbow. When I ask when Rae was born (1978), we discover that she's a horse as in Year of the Horse (aka 2026). Cool. Rae continued to call Cardiff home up through her college years. She didn't go to another school outside of Wales that had accepted her because she was attached to a group of skateboarders in her hometown. After she graduated, though, she moved to London. Music has been central for Rae as far back as she remembers (same). She shares stories of being maybe 5 and listening to the Top 40 with her cassette recorder ready to nab her favorite songs (same). According to Rae, the English look down on the Welsh, and have for some time, based on classist generalizations. Wales is where the UK mines most of its coal. London-types consider their neighbors to the southwest feral, and in some regards, the Welsh are, she says. In the Eighties, she remembers stories about IRA bombings appearing on the news nightly. Also, in Wales, miners went on strike and everyone knew about it. Rae says that Wales in the Eighties was essentially like listening to The Clash. We go on a sidebar about siblings, birth order, and what it means to be the youngest, which Rae and I both are. Growing up, she was close with both her older sisters. Today, one lives in Australia and the other lives in the London suburbs. Around age 10, Rae discovered metal. By 12, she decided that she would become a music journalist. In her teen years, she "snuck" her writing into local and college newspapers. The music journalism she consumed in those days included publications like Smash Hits, Kerrang!, NME, and Melody Maker. In fact, her first job out of college was at Kerrang! We go on a sidebar on the whole idea of living somewhere vs. visiting, and how they're so totally different on every level. I use Chicago, where I lived for a full six months in the Nineties, as my example. Rae offers up a stay in Brooklyn as hers. That job at Kerrang! is what brought Rae to London, another place she found impossible to live. I ask her to expound on what it was about the place, and she indulges me. She says that you have to be obscenely wealthy to live in Central London, so most folks are forced to the outskirts. But the jobs are in the middle of town, and so you end up spending around two or three hours a day commuting underground. It was/is also gray—the weather, the architecture—and the people in London were, as Rae describes it, hostile. When she goes into detail about the ways in which they were hostile, we agree that only you get to shit on your own hometown. People who aren't from there aren't allowed. It's a rule. Look it up. After a year working for the magazine in London, Rae met a guy from San Francisco. She'd been to The City and even spent significant time here working for Maximum Rock 'n' Roll. (At this point in the recording, I mistakenly call the BBQ place near Hayes and Divisadero until sometime in the early 2000s "Brothers." It was in fact called Brother in-law's. My apologies.) She moved in with that guy she met, lived with him for six months in London, and then it was time for him to come home to SF. He asked her if she wanted to join him and she accepted. She had already transitioned to freelance writing for the magazine, because office life didn't suit her, so work wasn't so much a problem. But upon arrival, she soon discovered how difficult it was to do anything without a Social Security number. That added an extra layer to moving here. But it wasn't the place itself or its people that made things hard. It was the system, so to speak. Also, while she was getting settled and learning how to survive in the US without an SSN, she started to see that the guy was, let's just say, not for her. She felt he'd been playing the long game when they lived together in London, but once back on his home turf, some of his sociopath tendencies emerged. It was 2002 and she lived in Bernal Heights on Cortland. She spent most of her time in the Mission, just down the hill. After a short time, the guy convinced her that they needed to get married, so they moved back to London. The marriage lasted three months, and Rae returned to her new home—San Francisco. When she came back, she experienced a stretch of housing instability. You could call it "couch surfing," but either way, it was dicey. Six months or so later, things settled. It was easier to live cheaply in the early 2000s, also. A $5 burrito could be a whole day's worth of food. And Rae had befriended enough bartenders that she rarely paid full-price for booze. She describes "The Blackout Triangle" of Killowatt, Delirium, and Dr. Bombay's. She also regularly visited Beauty Bar until that place went downhill. Check back this Thursday for Part 2 with Rae Alexandra. We recorded this episode at Vesuvio in North Beach in February 2026. Photography by Jeff Hunt

When an Australian thrash band that never broke big in the U.S. gets compared to early Metallica, Slayer, and Maiden in the same breath, you know you've stumbled onto something special. This episode dives into Mortal Sin's 1986 debut Mayhemic Destruction—a ferocious, drum‑heavy, DIY thrash record from Sydney that plays like a missing puzzle piece in 80s metal history.Across the conversation, the hosts unpack how Mortal Sin emerged out of Australia's pub‑rock and Buffalo‑style heavy scene into a faster, more aggressive sound after drummer Wayne Campbell discovered Metallica through tape‑trading in 1984. They trace the band's rapid rise from self‑funded studio upstarts to landing a global deal, touring with Metallica, Megadeth, and Testament, and struggling with that classic “too big for pubs, too small for arenas” problem back home. Along the way, they dig into the band's revolving‑door lineup, eerie mystery around the original drummer's disappearance, and the evolution of Mortal Sin's sound across later records.Musically, the episode zeroes in on what makes Mayhemic Destruction such a compelling outlier in 80s thrash. The drums and low end dominate the mix in a way that completely inverts the American template, forcing listeners to dig for the guitars and exposing a strange, rewarding hybrid of thrash, New Wave of British Heavy Metal, power metal, Motörhead grit, and proto‑death‑metal experiments on the title track. There's plenty of love for the riffs, time‑changes, and dark modal choices in songs like “The Curse” and “Lebanon,” but also honest criticism of the limited, Hetfield‑ish vocal approach and the odd sequencing choices that bury some of the strongest material in the back half.If you're into 80s thrash metal, early Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, NWOBHM, or obscure Australian metal bands that never quite got their due, this deep dive into Mortal Sin and Mayhemic Destruction is absolutely in your wheelhouse. It's a conversation about more than one album—it's about how geography, timing, and weird production decisions can turn a record into a cult artifact waiting to be rediscovered.Episode Highlights0:00 – Mayhem from Sydney – Setting up Mortal Sin, Mayhemic Destruction, and why this Australian thrash debut matters in the 80s metal landscape.5:05 – Battle jackets and logos – Gavin's origin story with Mortal Sin via patches, Kerrang! mags, and why some bands lived as imagery long before you ever heard a note.7:00 – Band history and lineup chaos – From Sydney origins and early rehearsals with Lino to global deals, tours with Metallica and Megadeth, and constant guitar player turnover.12:05 – DIY Mega Metal and Hetfield's stamp – Recording at 301 Studios, self‑releasing the album, mailing it out like a zine, and landing James Hetfield's 1986 endorsement.17:20 – “The Curse” – How the opening riffing, harmonics, and dissonant second‑guitar lines signal that Mortal Sin aren't just copying Bay Area thrash.22:30 – Drum mix from another planet – Why the massive, low‑end‑heavy drum sound flips the usual thrash hierarchy and changes how you hear the riffs and groove.24:50 – “Lebanon” – Dark, almost Slayer‑like scales, Dokken/Mr. Scary vibes, and how this track becomes a standout for mood and melody.25:30 – Thrash without a ballad – The near‑total absence of slow songs, the fake‑out intro of “Liar,” and what that says about the band's commitment to speed and aggression.30:15 – Honest strengths and weak spots – Praise for the riffs and rhythm section, plus a candid look at the limited vocals, buried mixes, and backward‑feeling sequencing.35:25 – Album art, demons, and Sydney in ruins – The Dungeons & Dragons‑style cover, nuked‑city imagery, and why this screamed “Tipper Gore nightmare” in the 80s.35:30 – “Mayhemic Destruction” (title track) – Proto‑death‑metal vocals and blast beats a year before Death's Scream Bloody Gore, and why burying it as the closer was a smart move.40:30 – Live vs. studio – What the 20th anniversary live tracks reveal about the band's true sound compared to the unique, drum‑heavy studio mix.[45:00 – Final verdict – Is Mayhemic Destruction a worthy album, a decent single, or a lost cult gem in the Australian thrash canon?Love uncovering 80s metal obscurities and lost thrash gems? Ozzy Osbournen ja Ronnie James Dion laulettua Black Sabbathin keulahahmoina, 1980-luvun alussa bändille koitti vaikea aikakausi. Sitä kutsutaan nimellä ”Lost Years”, hämärät vuodet. When Capitol Records' Next Quiet Riot Vanished Into Thin AirEver wonder what happens when a dream team of rock royalty assembles to create the perfect 80s metal album—only to watch it disappear during the mastering process? Icon's Night of the Crime is the Phoenix-born tragedy that sits at the very top of the “could have, should have been huge” list, featuring Eddie Kramer behind the boards, Ron Nevison on the mix, and Bob Halligan Jr. crafting radio-ready hooks that Kerrang! Magazine would later rank as the third greatest AOR album of all time.In this deep dive, the Dig Me Out crew unpacks one of metal's most fascinating “what if” stories—a Capitol Records release that had everything: sophisticated songwriting with clever half-time dynamics, dual guitar harmonies that rivaled the best AOR bands, and a powerhouse vocalist in Stephen Clifford who could hit impossible octaves while maintaining that essential metal grit. But just as the album was ready for its 1985 MTV conquest, Clifford walked away during mastering, taking Icon's shot at stardom with him and leaving behind a perfectly crafted 40-minute mystery. If you're fascinated by the intersection of professional songcraft and metal authenticity—think Def Leppard's Pyromania meets Journey's sophistication with the edge of early Quiet Riot—this episode reveals why geography, timing, and band chemistry matter as much as talent in the unforgiving world of 80s rock radio.Episode Highlights:0:00 – Tournament Results – How Icon beat Ozzy in a listener poll tie-breaker9:53 – The Eddie Kramer Factor – Why Jimi Hendrix's producer took on a Phoenix metal band12:17 – The Vanishing Singer – Stephen Clifford's mysterious exit during mastering18:05 – Sophisticated Metal Dynamics – Breaking down Icon's clever use of half-time and strategic pauses25:33 – AOR Meets Metal – How Icon straddled the line between commercial appeal and hard rock edge29:10 – Bob Halligan Jr.‘s Hooks – The song doctor's six co-writes that should have been hits38:00 – Perfect Timing Gone Wrong – Why 1985 was Icon's window between Pyromania and Hysteria52:00 – Phoenix Geography Problem – How being 400 miles from the Sunset Strip hurt Icon's chances1:00:34 – Final Ratings – Two “Worthy Albums” and one “Better EP” verdict on this lost classicReady to discover your next obsession in overlooked 80s metal perfection? We present our review of Babymetal - Metal Forth and more!Babymetal's Metal Forth, released August 8th, 2025, on Capitol Records. It's officially their fourth canonical album — they set The Other One aside as a concept project — and it's the first full record to feature Momometal as a permanent member alongside Su-metal and Moametal. The title is a play on words: “Metal Forth” as in moving forward, and “Metal Forth” as in pushing beyond the genre itself. And that's exactly what they try to do. This record is built almost entirely on collaborations. Only three of the ten tracks are just Babymetal. Everywhere else you've got guests: Poppy, Spiritbox, Polyphia, Electric Callboy, Slaughter to Prevail, Bloodywood, even Tom Morello dropping in with that unmistakable guitar attack.Clocking in at just over 35 minutes, it's lean, polished, and loud. You get flashes of nu-metal, deathcore, alt-metal, even EDM crossover, all stitched together by Babymetal's trademark pop-metal energy. It's maximalist by design — a chaos of styles colliding with choreography and gloss.Critics were split but mostly positive. Clash called it “unrelentingly maximalist” and gave it a 7 out of 10. Blabbermouth went higher with an 8, praising it as their snappiest record to date. Kerrang! and Dork both landed at 4 out of 5, while NME and Sputnikmusic were less impressed, arguing that some collabs drowned out the band's core identity. Louder Sound described it as “a high-stakes experiment in what heavy music could become if it stopped worrying about authenticity and genre loyalty.”And that's the big takeaway: Metal Forth isn't about purity, it's about possibility. Babymetal has always been divisive, but here they lean into that division as a statement. The album says metal can be pop, it can be global, it can be hybridized beyond recognition — and still be metal. Love it or hate it, Metal Forth proves that Babymetal aren't just survivors of their own gimmick. They've turned into disruptors, forcing the genre to ask what comes next.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59 Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

On July 22, 2025, we lost Birmingham-born rock vocalist and cultural icon Ozzy Osbourne, rock's "prince of darkness," at the age of 76. His death, from complications due to Parkinson's Disease, ends a career spanning five decades, in which he pioneered an entire subgenre of heavy metal music, as frontman for Black Sabbath, before going on to an even bigger career as a solo artist, where he is credited for introducing the guitarist Randy Rhoads to the wider rock world, and for creating the wildly popular Ozzfest tours. Then, when he'd done it all, he and members of his family, Jack, Kelly, and his manager-wife Sharon, became pioneers of "reality TV" with the hit series, The Osbournes. On this very special episode, we hear two personal stories of how Ozzy's music and persona touched the lives of music industry professionals who were also, first and foremost, fans. Returning to our program, Jenn D'Eugenio (Women In Vinyl), made the journey to Birmingham for Ozzy's bittersweet Back To The Beginning farewell show, . She shares her first-hand descriptions of the event, plus two other fascinating Black Sabbath stories. Brocarde is the creator of an enchanting world where dark, haunting aesthetics meet passion-fuelled lyrics and design. Her latest single "Identity Theft" was produced by Chris Collier (Korn, Mick Mars). Brocarde is a dynamic storyteller who marries both music and fashion in an orchestral explosion, designed to make the ears and eyes bleed. A one-woman horror story, if centuries aligned, Brocarde could almost be the secret lovechild of Edgar Allan Poe and Sylvia Plath. In what could only be described as an effervescent melting pot, Brocarde's bubbling cauldron is peppered with hints of Little House on The Prairie, and seasoned with remnants of the Addams family values: she's an all-consuming artist who's not for the faint-hearted. Brocarde arrived on the music scene in 2019 presenting her debut single Last Supper. With its biblical relatability and an army of sinister pigs, the music video depicted a twisted fairy tale that whetted the appetite of her loyal supporters. She was hailed as "One to Watch" by Planet Rock Magazine, and secured airplay on Kerrang!, Planet Rock and BBC Introducing.  www.Instagram.com/brocarde website www.Brocarde.com  About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. This week Dave returns as we dive into our bag of covermount CDs and unearth a real gem. If you were buying Kerrang! in August 2002, you might remember issue 918 with The Prodigy on the cover. What you definitely remember is the cover-mount CD that came with it - Hometaping Volume Two, curated by Amen's Casey Chaos. This wasn't your typical corporate compilation of radio-friendly metal and whatever major labels were pushing that month. This was a proper education in underground extremity, compiled by someone who'd been living in the trenches since he was photographed at Black Flag gigs in 1982. Casey wasn't messing about. He whittled down his selection from 60 songs, phoned Henry Rollins and Satyr personally for unreleased tracks, and designed the cover himself. The result was 26 tracks of whiplash-inducing genius that introduced countless metal and punk fans to bands they'd never have discovered otherwise. From Refused's "New Noise" and Iron Monkey's feral sludge to birthday party's pre-Bad Seeds insanity and proper OG punk from Discharge and X-Ray Specs, this was cultural education disguised as a free CD. The fact we're still dissecting every track choice 20+ years later proves Casey achieved something genuinely special - a compilation that worked as both a history lesson and a challenge to dig deeper into the underground. Episode Highlights [00:00:00] Welcome to the cave: Easter resurrections and new studio vibes [00:05:39] Casey Chaos biography: From skateboard prodigy to punk legend [00:18:00] Rollins Band gets the pub rock treatment (Chris ducks for cover) [00:24:00] The Kinison: When Oblong, Illinois meets post-hardcore [00:29:00] Murderdolls: Budget Misfits for the nu-metal generation [00:32:00] Discharge delivers the D-beat masterclass [00:43:00] Iron Monkey: Nottingham sludge at its most feral [00:37:00] Refused drops "New Noise" and changes everything [00:42:00] Turbonegro: Norwegian glam-punk that divides the room [00:43:00] Void: The DC hardcore deep cut that finally clicks [00:46:00] Immortal: When black metal meets the Tony Hawk soundtrack [00:51:00] X-Ray Specs: Polystyrene schools the youngsters [00:56:00] Zyklon: Emperor side-project with uncomfortable baggage [01:02:00] Cave In: The wrong track for the right band [01:04:00] Birthday Party: Nick Cave's mental early years get the respect they deserve [01:06:00] Nasum: Swedish grindcore brings back the brutality [01:07:00] The Distillers: Brody Dalle's voice cuts through everything [01:13:00] Eyehategod vs Iron Monkey: The great sludge debate [01:14:00] Division of Laura Lee: Sweden's most forgettable export [01:15:00] The Haunted: At The Gates members go full throttle [01:17:00] Mortiis: Norwegian dungeon synth gets the goth treatment [01:20:00] Gary Numan: The robot pioneer closes out the education [01:22:00] Highlights, lowlights, and wild cards: The final verdict

Seattle's Dead Bars, in the words of Razorcake, “make something impossible to duplicate look so simple and attainable.” For over a decade, the band—founded and led by John Maiello—has been delivering life-affirming hard rock, drawing comparisons to acts like Japandroids, White Reaper, and Fucked Up. Throughout this time, they've earned national acclaim while remaining a beloved institution. They're the band most likely to be seen sweating it out on stage any given night, delivering "emotional singalong anthems—perfect for screaming along after you've had a beer, or five," as Kerrang! puts it.Their third LP, All Dead Bars Go to Heaven, reaffirms that there is “arguably no better Seattle band,” according to The Seattle Times. With ten hook-laden heavy hitters—from the rousing opener “I Wanna Be a Ghost” to the anthemic closer “Be Me”—the album marks a new chapter: an introduction for the next generation ready to escape the grind, and a reminder to the previous one of their enduring power. The theme is heaven: a place of eternal reward for a life lived virtuously, regardless of the love or loss that once defined it. When the band cries “Dead Bars Forever,” they mean it. Send us a textAs the metalcore world continues to thrive on its past and push forward into new territory, few bands walk that line more masterfully than August Burns Red. The Grammy-nominated heavyweights recently made a powerful appearance on The Barn's very own Vulgar Display of Podcast, where drummer Matt Greiner joined the conversation to dive into the band's legacy, relentless touring schedule, and their latest massive undertaking — a full re-recording of their iconic debut Thrill Seeker. And as fate would have it, the timing couldn't be better. ABR is set to join Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine on The Poisoned Ascendancy Tour 2025, which hits The Factory STL in St. Louis on Saturday, April 19. The tour celebrates the 20th anniversary of both Ascendancy and The Poison, with each band performing their breakout records in full. With Bleed From Within also on the bill, it's a stacked night of explosive metal — and ABR is bringing the heat. But the fire doesn't stop on stage. The band is marking 20 years of Thrill Seeker with a complete re-recording of the album, this time featuring longtime frontman Jake Luhrs on vocals — a longtime dream finally realized. The anniversary edition drops January 24 via ABR Records, packed with upgraded production from Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, and features guest spots from Killswitch Engage's Adam Dutkiewicz and former ABR vocalist Josh McManness. Plus, the bonus track “Pride & Humility” gets a proper reimagining. Known for their tight musicianship, complex structures, and emotionally rich themes, August Burns Red has carved out a space uniquely their own — what Kerrang! once described as "thrillingly empathetic." Whether tearing up stages across the globe with Parkway Drive and Bring Me the Horizon, or dominating headlining tours celebrating albums like Constellations and Leveler, ABR has proven time and time again that they're built to last.

Following Seasonal Depression [2015] and  In The Wake of  Our Discord [2018], they made waves with their full-length debut, Restless Heart, Keep Running, in 2019. Myles Kennedy Interview | The Brett Allan Show | The Art of Letting Go Alterbridge and Slash As a prolific songwriter, powerhouse vocalist, and skilled guitar player, Myles Kennedy tunes into the rhythm of his surroundings and goes with the flow. Fronting Alter Bridge, his soaring vocals, open-hearted lyrics, and airtight riffs have fueled the group's global impact as a critically acclaimed, arena-filling force of nature over two decades-plus. On the microphone for Slash and The Conspirators, his towering range and magnetic stage presence has consistently stunned audiences since 2010. Becoming a celebrated collaborator, he's the rare presence just as comfortable on a track with Disturbed, Halestorm, and Sevendust as he is with Gov't Mule and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels. It's why he's generated over 1 billion cumulative streams, earned gold and platinum certifications worldwide, uplifted countless fans, and KERRANG! christened him “one of rock's finest vocalists.” It's also why he's carved out his own lane. With two solo efforts under his belt and sold-out headline tours in the rearview, a sense of keenly honed intuition guides his third full-length LP, The Art of Letting Go [Napalm Records]. “I've been going through a massive Bruce Lee kick, no pun intended,” he smiles. “His quote, ‘Be water, my friend', always stuck with me. On a grander scale, it represents the record. It's an exercise in removing prior restrictions and shattering the parameters I set up for myself as a solo artist. This is a rock record. In the past, I thought rock might be a little too close to the other projects. Instead, I just let go and embraced my essence as a singer, guitar player, and writer. This is who I am. This is my DNA. Instead of being apologetic and shying away from it, I'm letting go and being myself.” Connect with us on our website for more amazing conversations! www.brettallanshow.com Have you got some feedback? Episode 61: Korn's "Untouchables", or How To Spend 4 Million Dollars Without Really Trying

One of the most expensive albums in history–#9 to be exact–Korn's fifth album that reportedly cost $4m to make was a sign of the changing times in nu-metal, a sounding of the death rattle for the genre. And given how much money Korn spent on this record, the death rattle actually sounds really, really good. Impeccably produced and with way more good songs on it than we remember, this is one of the rare nu-metal albums that actually improves its standing with a re-listen in 2024, unencumbered by the eminent collapse of nu-metal that turned many fans off back in 2002. And of course, Korn says a lot of stupid stuff around the time of its release, as a full-length Kerrang! piece makes the huge mistake of allowing the 4 non-Jonathan Davis members of Korn equal interview time to Jonathan Davis, and we learn more than we should. It's also time for our annual appraisal of the Miss Rocklahoma pageant and we talk about Andrew W.K. for some reason. If you want to hear us talk about a lot more stuff for no reason, head on over to our Patreon and donate to help support your fine hosts of the POD Kast. It's our fifth anniversary! No better time to donate. For just $4/month at patreon.com/thepodkast, you'll get access to our entire back catalogue of bonuses (over 140!) plus THREE new bonus episodes every month. Last month, Bryn Nieboer from the great band Stay Inside joined us to discuss Sleep's "Holy Mountain", a stoner-metal classic, and we have lots of other fun stuff like the POD Kast Lotto, an exclusive Discord, and more! You can even tell us what to review for an episode! Check it out.

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Wild Things over Zoom video!Fast-rising UK quartet The Wild Things have released “Drunk Again”, the lead single from their sophomore LP Afterglow, set for release later in 2024. Co-produced by Pete Townshend, “Drunk Again” is the perfect soundtrack to a night out at the local dive and further cements The Wild Things as one of rock's most exciting young acts.Anchored by a twangy lick from guitarist Rob Kendrick and vocalist Sydney Rae White's powerful voice, “Drunk Again” is the latest punchy offering from a group with seemingly endless potential. The forthcoming Afterglow record will be an immersive choose-your-own-adventure concept record that tells the story of the residents of the fictional town of Valentine amidst a paranormal phenomenon.Already a critical favorite (they have been profiled by Kerrang! who declared them “your favorite new band”, Clash who said they are “blazing a trail across London, with their snappy, infectious live show,” and Rolling Stone who praised “their hook-laden riffs, tight melodies, and White's stage presence”), “Drunk Again” demonstrates The Wild Things' voracious appetite for power chords, sing-along choruses, and the gripping storytelling of their creative heroes (Pete Townshend, Spielberg, etc). They may sound straight out of the 70s, but The Wild Things are turning their amps up to 11 for a whole new generation of rock and roll fans.Having honed their live show with high-profile opening gigs for The Who (their first-ever US show was at Madison Square Garden) and KISS, “Drunk Again” builds on the momentum of their recent Friends With Benefits EP (which featured KISS' Tommy Thayer). Recorded at Pete Townshend's London studio, the track notably features the legendary guitarist playing a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ - the very same instrument that appears on “Baba O'Riley”. At the end of the sessions, Townshend gifted the organ to the band…a symbolic passing of the torch from one generation to the next. It's been a busy 2024 for The Wild Things, whose Friends With Benefits EP featured appearances by Townshend, KISS' Tommy Thayer, and drag legend Trixie Mattel. In true Rock n Roll fashion, the band celebrated the release by performing atop a bus traveling down Hollywood Boulevard in LA, before taking the stage at The Bourbon Room in Hollywood for a high-octane free performance in front of their adoring stateside fans. The Wild Things are Sydney Rae White, Rob Kendrick, Pete Wheeler, and Cam White. We want to hear from you!
