Send us a textAs the metalcore world continues to thrive on its past and push forward into new territory, few bands walk that line more masterfully than August Burns Red. The Grammy-nominated heavyweights recently made a powerful appearance on The Barn's very own Vulgar Display of Podcast, where drummer Matt Greiner joined the conversation to dive into the band's legacy, relentless touring schedule, and their latest massive undertaking — a full re-recording of their iconic debut Thrill Seeker. And as fate would have it, the timing couldn't be better. ABR is set to join Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine on The Poisoned Ascendancy Tour 2025, which hits The Factory STL in St. Louis on Saturday, April 19. The tour celebrates the 20th anniversary of both Ascendancy and The Poison, with each band performing their breakout records in full. With Bleed From Within also on the bill, it's a stacked night of explosive metal — and ABR is bringing the heat. But the fire doesn't stop on stage. The band is marking 20 years of Thrill Seeker with a complete re-recording of the album, this time featuring longtime frontman Jake Luhrs on vocals — a longtime dream finally realized. The anniversary edition drops January 24 via ABR Records, packed with upgraded production from Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, and features guest spots from Killswitch Engage's Adam Dutkiewicz and former ABR vocalist Josh McManness. Plus, the bonus track “Pride & Humility” gets a proper reimagining. Known for their tight musicianship, complex structures, and emotionally rich themes, August Burns Red has carved out a space uniquely their own — what Kerrang! once described as "thrillingly empathetic." Whether tearing up stages across the globe with Parkway Drive and Bring Me the Horizon, or dominating headlining tours celebrating albums like Constellations and Leveler, ABR has proven time and time again that they're built to last.

On this episode I'm joined by Kerrang! Radio host, Alex Baker. We talk about his old life in bands, how he entered the world of radio, his new show surrounding Download Festival, advice for bands looking to get their music on radio, advice for others looking to work in radio, and loads more.A new episode will be released every Thursday.-----HOW TO SUPPORT THE PODCAST:
We chatted with Cork musician and artist bÚkl about the challenges of making music and getting it heard in 2025, as well as the joys of being based in the People's Republic Cork. See more about them here bukl.bandcamp.com Who are we talking to, is it a logical journey to what you do now? bÚkl is my artist name. Pronounced like 'buachaill'. I love Irish but we've always been in a bit of a twilight zone with it, and that's ok. I grew up in Myrtleville, Cork, by the sea. Music was always exciting to me ever since my Dad played me 'Live and Let Die' by wings on our turntable when I was around 5. I think it is a logical journey, even if I went about it arseways. I've been playing guitar, singing and writing songs and poetry since my early teens, and I have a degree in Music. In college I learned how to produce music with a DAW and MIDI. But I struggled for a few years mentally after leaving college. I stopped playing music and was afraid to leave my house. So music was shelved for a while, but thankfully I was able to revive myself and get back into it. Working in a record store with a very supportive boss was a huge help. I never stopped listening though. At the same time, mental health issues like anxiety and depression don't mix well with social media, so that part is tricky if I want to try to promote my stuff. bÚkl - Eclipsed (Official Music Video) bÚkl coming through from Cork What music did you love as a kid? It varies quite a bit. I liked the boy and girl bands in the late 90s, Boy zone and Spice Girls, when I was about 5-8, also the charting dance stuff like ATB and Dario G a bit after that. Then my parents got Sky and I discovered Kerrang TV at about 12. I was mesmerized by rock and metal, it was the best thing I had ever heard. I think the first song I loved on Kerrang was 'Links 1234' by Rammstein. The video with the ants vs the termites is still vivid in my head. Then I bought my first CD with my own money from Ray in MusicZone in 2001 after he opened that year in Carrigaline. I wasn't allowed to get Limp Bizkit because of all the language so I got The Offspring, 'Conspiracy of One's instead, which has less language! What are you working on musically now? At the moment, I'm rehearsing with my friend and colleague, Young Adam, to put the bÚkl music together in a live setting. We work with backing tracks and a loop pedal. Two guitars. I haven't played live in nearly 10 years so my confidence isn't great, but we're enjoying our jam sessions, so fingers crossed. I'm also going through my old recording devices and transferring riffs and song ideas to my laptop so I can flesh them out and record them in future. Do you feel it is easier or harder to create music now? I suppose it's easier for people to create music now because of how technology has progressed and that we have so many devices with recording capabilities. But I think if you have the passion you'll always find a way. I remember saving up for a camcorder when I was around 10 so I could make home movies. When I was about 14 I used a karaoke machine that we had to record songs simply at home on cassette. I got a Zoom H4 recorder in college. And in recent years I've used the DAW Reaper which is very reasonably priced compared to other options. And how about to create awareness and a buzz about what you have made? I have mixed feelings on this because there is more indie music out there now than ever and nearly everyone is on social media, where you can reach a lot of people. But it can be difficult to break through the fog. Also I find social media tough mentally, you never know what odd responses you'll receive from people, or if you'll receive any response at all! A lot of the time people are kind but the rare digs can stick in your head. But I think if you work at building a good following on your platform of choice it can be rewarding in the long run. What are the pros and cons of being based in Cork for a musician? There are plenty of music heads here who ap...
On the heels of the tremendous success of The Morrison Project and #1 song "Crack Cocaine", rock guitarist Billy Morrison and Ozzy Osbourne release an epic new single "Gods of Rock N Roll" today, Valentine's Day.“Ozzy and I have breathed new life into what we always felt was a huge song. GODS OF ROCK N ROLL was written ten years ago in a South American hotel room, but with this re-recording we both feel we have finally made the song what it was always meant to be - a huge emotive ballad," says Morrison. He adds, “A huge portion of the song was completely re-recorded, the 61 piece Budapest Scoring Orchestra recorded the orchestral score composed by Fred Coury, and then the John Burroughs High School choir were added. Barry Pointer had the unenviable task of mixing 132 tracks and he did an incredible job. The end result is what happens when Ozzy Osbourne makes some suggestions, and Billy Morrison listens!”The orchestral score was composed and arranged by Fred Coury, and the song was mixed by Barry Pointer and mastered by David Donnelly. The recording features the renowned Budapest Scoring Orchestra. ”Gods of Rock N Roll" showcases the talents of Billy Morrison on guitar, Ozzy Osbourne on vocals, and Steve Stevens on lead guitar. The video truly represents the spirit of the song that Ozzy and Billy wroteOzzy told Kerrang!, “Billy and I wrote GODS OF ROCK N ROLL together in a hotel room while I was touring in South America about 10 years ago. This re-recorded version of the song finally has all the bells and whistles. I told Billy then that it needed an orchestra and a choir, but it took 10 FUCKING YEARS for him to listen to me."To add to the excitement, Morrison is set to release a deluxe digital edition of The Morrison Project album on February 21st.Billy Morrison, the British guitarist, singer, and songwriter is primarily known as Billy Idol's rhythm guitar player for the past 15 years alongside lead guitarist Steve Stevens. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by genre hopping but always heavy musician CODY FROST!Cody's journey takes root in the days of the Kerrang cover CD, which will have influenced many like minded folk into the heavier side of musical styles (they've come a long way since AD/DC on the cover!). This is the journey of Cody and a very real, human approach to acheiving goals and getting to an achievable level of success. Turns out it takes more than sending a message to the universe and simply receiving all you want without any work. Cody's been doing things their own way and making some awesome friends along the way including none other than Enter Shikari (to the point of guesting on their work), all the while being awesome at tattoo and digital art, and brushing up on music production. Super inspiring even if you're not in this area of the musical graph!• NOTE! Sound oddities from 11m38s to 17m31s - entirely unavoidable and efforts were made to salvage the audio - this was the most ear-friendly route, but apologies for that. You Me At Six are set to kick off their Australian tour this week, starting in Brisbane on January 24. The run of shows - that extends through Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth - will feature very special guests Holding Absence, the band British rock bible Kerrang! labelled as British rock's “new leading light”.YOU ME AT SIX are one of the most beloved British rock bands of all time, having delivered multiple number 1 albums, dominating charts, racking up hundreds of millions of streams, selling out arenas and headlining festivals; and along the way crafting some of the catchiest pop-rock anthems of their generation. Bite My Tongue, Take on the World, Underdog, Beautiful Way, Room to Breathe… the list of classics seems almost endless. The band's revival of infectious and spirited pop-rock earned them a mass of fans worldwide, seeing them sell out show after show across the globe.Choosing to bring such a storied 20-year career to an end cannot be easy. Doing so with your original line-up, on your own terms, and with the band members remaining best of friends is unheard of. But as the saying goes, go out at the top of your game and You Me At Six are certainly doing that.Having shocked the rock world recently by announcing their imminent demise, the band are setting out on their greatest tour, delivering a career-spanning 2-hour set and determined to leave the fans with a truly special performance to remember them by. “We've got a plan to play songs from every single album and make it a real victory lap. And everyone feels like that. We've looked at the setlists and gone, ‘Cool – those five can stay, the rest is going to be stuff we haven't done for years. We want to have 50 songs ready to go so that each night we can constantly mix it up and make it special.”“When we started YMAS we were kids. We only ever wanted to travel and to experience life as a group of friends. We feel like on the eve of our 20th anniversary as a band, now is a good time to call time. “We're in a fortunate position where our fans still want to see us live and come celebrate the life of this band. So that is what we will do for 2024 and 2025. We can't wait to see our fans on the road.” explains frontman Josh Franceschi.Dave Griffiths caught up with Josh to find out a little more about what to expect and how much fun the band plans to have on their final tour to this country.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Krusher JouleHis graphic design work can be found on albums by Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, among others. He's also done work for Motorhead, Hawkwind and the mighty Kerrang! Magazine (he designed the iconic logo). Steve “Krusher” Joule joins us to discuss his battles with Sharon Osbourne and Don Arden, how his work on “Diary of a Madman” was deemed satanic, why the gatefold to Iron Maiden's “Live After Death” nearly made his eyes glaze over and how Black Sabbath's “Born Again” went from a speed-fueled, lost-cause disaster to a shockingly approved, love/hate success. And to think it all started with Blondie?!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Capstan over Zoom video! To make a mosaic, tiny pieces interlock as a larger picture. In similar fashion, distinct elements coalesce as one in Capstan. The Florida quintet—Anthony Demario [vocals], Joe Mabry [guitar], Harrison Borman [guitar], Andrew “Boz” Bozymowski [bass, vocals], and Scott Fisher [drums]—merge metallic precision with pit-splitting hardcore grooves and the kind of hooks you can't shake. After amassing tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from the likes of KERRANG! and many more, the group paint a definitive body of work on their aptly titled third full-length offering, The Mosaic [Fearless Records]. Since 2015, Capstan have progressed with each subsequent move. Following Seasonal Depression [2015] and In The Wake of Our Discord [2018], they made waves with their full-length debut, Restless Heart, Keep Running, in 2019. Among many standouts, “Stars Before The Sun” racked up over 5.1 million Spotify streams followed by “We'll Always Have Paris” with 2.5 million Spotify streams. 2021 saw them level up again with Separate. Right out of the gate, KERRANG! rated it “4-out-of-5 stars” and proclaimed, “This is Capstan at full strength and it's a second outing to be proud of.” They toured with the likes of Trash Boat, Doll Skin, Silverstein, and many more. This time around, the boys opted to self-produce, engineer, and record what would become The Mosaic. At the same time, they collectively absorbed the spirit of a more optimistic season. As with any mosaic worth pondering, this one might just leave you uplifted. We want to hear from you! In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles welcomes Rudy Childs, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and rock photographer. Rudy shares insights into his career, highlighting his acclaimed documentaries on heavy metal music and his extensive photography work with iconic bands like Van Halen and Aerosmith. The conversation touches on Rudy's early concert experiences, notably his first Aerosmith concert at 15, which set the course for his unique approach to concert photography by sneaking cameras into shows to capture legendary moments.Rudy also discusses the highs and lows of his journey, including curious anecdotes such as impersonating a Kerrang magazine writer for a band interview and his encounter with Sharon Osbourne when she threw him out of Ozzy's dressing room. His passion for rock music is evident in his vivid recollections of concerts and the lengths he went to photograph and videotape these events, despite the challenges posed by his battles with drug use.Beyond photography, Rudy describes his venture into filmmaking, with documentaries like 'The Dogmatics' and 'Tension,' exploring bands that shaped the punk and metal scenes. He details his creative process and the enthusiasm with which he pursued these projects, despite personal setbacks. His work has been celebrated, winning several awards and being featured in numerous publications.Rudy concludes by sharing exciting updates and future plans, including a potential publication of his candid memoir 'Riff Raff and Rock and Roll,' which delves into his personal experiences with addiction and recovery. All of us have dreamed of going backstage after a killer concert to hangout with our favorite hard rock heroes. For more than 40 years, that's been Mick Wall's job. While writing for Kerrang!, Classic Rock, any number of newspapers and magazines around the world or working on one of his more than two dozen books, Mick Wall has met them all and seen it all. By 1988, you might say that Mick was a bit jaded - been there, done that, got the (free) t-shirt. But in April 1988 in Worcester, Mass while on assignment for the 200th episode of Kerrang!, Mick had the chance to not only witness David Lee Roth live but to hang with him one-on-one through the wee hours of the morning into the next afternoon. We crack up hearing stories about lobster dinners with dancing girls, Steve Vai, and large bags of....party favors. We dive into what a showman Dave was, what a party animal Dave was and what might have become of Dave had he been born in different eras. Mick's dry wit and attention to fun details makes this one of our most fun conversations in the four years of our podcast. Was Dave in real life like he was on MTV and those famous music videos? Myles Kennedy Interview | The Brett Allan Show | The Art of Letting Go Alterbridge and Slash As a prolific songwriter, powerhouse vocalist, and skilled guitar player, Myles Kennedy tunes into the rhythm of his surroundings and goes with the flow. Fronting Alter Bridge, his soaring vocals, open-hearted lyrics, and airtight riffs have fueled the group's global impact as a critically acclaimed, arena-filling force of nature over two decades-plus. On the microphone for Slash and The Conspirators, his towering range and magnetic stage presence has consistently stunned audiences since 2010. Becoming a celebrated collaborator, he's the rare presence just as comfortable on a track with Disturbed, Halestorm, and Sevendust as he is with Gov't Mule and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels. It's why he's generated over 1 billion cumulative streams, earned gold and platinum certifications worldwide, uplifted countless fans, and KERRANG! christened him “one of rock's finest vocalists.” It's also why he's carved out his own lane. With two solo efforts under his belt and sold-out headline tours in the rearview, a sense of keenly honed intuition guides his third full-length LP, The Art of Letting Go [Napalm Records]. “I've been going through a massive Bruce Lee kick, no pun intended,” he smiles. “His quote, ‘Be water, my friend', always stuck with me. On a grander scale, it represents the record. It's an exercise in removing prior restrictions and shattering the parameters I set up for myself as a solo artist. This is a rock record. In the past, I thought rock might be a little too close to the other projects. Instead, I just let go and embraced my essence as a singer, guitar player, and writer. This is who I am. This is my DNA. Instead of being apologetic and shying away from it, I'm letting go and being myself.” Connect with us on our website for more amazing conversations! www.brettallanshow.com Have you got some feedback? pWotD Episode 2684: Linkin Park Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 540,248 views on Friday, 6 September 2024 our article of the day is Linkin Park.Linkin Park is an American rock band formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. The band's current lineup consists of vocalist/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn, bassist Dave Farrell, co-lead vocalist Emily Armstrong, and drummer Colin Brittain. The lineup for the band's first seven studio albums included lead vocalist Chester Bennington and drummer Rob Bourdon; following Bennington's suicide in July 2017, the band entered an indefinite hiatus. In September 2024, Linkin Park's reformation was announced along with the addition of Armstrong and Brittain.Categorized mainly as alternative rock and nu metal, Linkin Park's earlier music spanned a fusion of heavy metal and hip hop, while their later music features more electronica and pop elements. Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led to the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling", and "In the End" all charting highly on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The lattermost also crossed over to the number two spot on the nation's Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts. The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, while their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was a substantially more pop-oriented record. Linkin Park is among both the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:25 UTC on Saturday, 7 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Linkin Park on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.
One of the most expensive albums in history–#9 to be exact–Korn's fifth album that reportedly cost $4m to make was a sign of the changing times in nu-metal, a sounding of the death rattle for the genre. And given how much money Korn spent on this record, the death rattle actually sounds really, really good. Impeccably produced and with way more good songs on it than we remember, this is one of the rare nu-metal albums that actually improves its standing with a re-listen in 2024, unencumbered by the eminent collapse of nu-metal that turned many fans off back in 2002. And of course, Korn says a lot of stupid stuff around the time of its release, as a full-length Kerrang! piece makes the huge mistake of allowing the 4 non-Jonathan Davis members of Korn equal interview time to Jonathan Davis, and we learn more than we should. It's also time for our annual appraisal of the Miss Rocklahoma pageant and we talk about Andrew W.K. for some reason. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Wild Things over Zoom video!Fast-rising UK quartet The Wild Things have released “Drunk Again”, the lead single from their sophomore LP Afterglow, set for release later in 2024. Co-produced by Pete Townshend, “Drunk Again” is the perfect soundtrack to a night out at the local dive and further cements The Wild Things as one of rock's most exciting young acts.Anchored by a twangy lick from guitarist Rob Kendrick and vocalist Sydney Rae White's powerful voice, “Drunk Again” is the latest punchy offering from a group with seemingly endless potential. The forthcoming Afterglow record will be an immersive choose-your-own-adventure concept record that tells the story of the residents of the fictional town of Valentine amidst a paranormal phenomenon.Already a critical favorite (they have been profiled by Kerrang! who declared them “your favorite new band”, Clash who said they are “blazing a trail across London, with their snappy, infectious live show,” and Rolling Stone who praised “their hook-laden riffs, tight melodies, and White's stage presence”), “Drunk Again” demonstrates The Wild Things' voracious appetite for power chords, sing-along choruses, and the gripping storytelling of their creative heroes (Pete Townshend, Spielberg, etc). They may sound straight out of the 70s, but The Wild Things are turning their amps up to 11 for a whole new generation of rock and roll fans.Having honed their live show with high-profile opening gigs for The Who (their first-ever US show was at Madison Square Garden) and KISS, “Drunk Again” builds on the momentum of their recent Friends With Benefits EP (which featured KISS' Tommy Thayer). Recorded at Pete Townshend's London studio, the track notably features the legendary guitarist playing a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ - the very same instrument that appears on “Baba O'Riley”. At the end of the sessions, Townshend gifted the organ to the band…a symbolic passing of the torch from one generation to the next. It's been a busy 2024 for The Wild Things, whose Friends With Benefits EP featured appearances by Townshend, KISS' Tommy Thayer, and drag legend Trixie Mattel. In true Rock n Roll fashion, the band celebrated the release by performing atop a bus traveling down Hollywood Boulevard in LA, before taking the stage at The Bourbon Room in Hollywood for a high-octane free performance in front of their adoring stateside fans. The Wild Things are Sydney Rae White, Rob Kendrick, Pete Wheeler, and Cam White. We want to hear from you! This week Grant Donaldson joins us to talk about this Kerrang! covermount CD that came out during the hey day of nu metal. Turns out Grant is quite unfamiliar with nu metal so this was a real fun episode. In side A we talk about the first half of this CD, which includes the talents of Jerry Cantrell, Everclear, Bad Religion, Psycore and One Minutes Silence. It's all downhill after that, which you'll hear in the next episode...
With the exception of Soul Asylum and the Presidents of the USA, unless you were seriously tuned into Kerrang! and/or alternative music in the 90s there are very few bands you'll remember, let alone recognise, in the back half of this CD. Bullyrag, Janus Stark, Pulkas, Cecil, Pissing Razors and Genitorturers have all vanished more or less into oblivion since the 90s. Genitorturers perhaps being a bit of an exception in that they're still going to this day. Grant, and the rest of the crew, are positively bewildered by the rest of this compilation. And very occasionally surprised.
This episode's guest is author Steven Blush. His book American Hairmetal: Can't Get Enough has just been released. This is an expanded edition of the book originally released by Feral House in 2006.Interest in hair metal is as strong as it was over three decades ago. In the summer of 2022 Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard went out on a stadium tour with Poison, and Joan Jett as supporting acts. The tour brought in $173.5 million, making it the highest-grossing tour of either band's career. In 2016, Guns N' Roses launched their Not In This Lifetime...Tour. The tour was 2016's highest-earning per-city global concert tour and the fourth-highest-grossing overall that year. In 2017, the tour ranked as the second highest-grossing worldwide tour and the band continued to bring in huge numbers through 2023. American Hairmetal: Can't Get Enough features hundreds of photographs of bands including Poison, Cinderella, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Ratt, and Stryper. Wild quotes from the major players of the era including David Lee Roth, Jon Bon Jovi, Sebastian Bach, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Bret Michaels, Don Dokken, and many of the era's unsung heroes. This expanded edition includes more photos, more quotes, and a new introduction by Chip Z'Nuff of Enuff Z'Nuff and an interview with Rik Fox of WASP. Steven Blush is an author, journalist, and filmmaker who is best known for his 2006 book American Hardcore and the movie of the same name. In this episode we welcome the splendid Steffan Chirazi to RBP Towers and ask him about his career as a metal/hard rock specialist and his long association with the mighty Metallica. We hear about our guest's lucky break as a 15-year-old Motörhead maniac when the band's frontman Lemmy gave up three hours to Steffan during the sessions for 1983's Another Perfect Day – and became a dear friend for life. Steffan then recounts how he got his foot in the door at Sounds and its enduring HM spinoff Kerrang!. The first of many interviews with Metallica led to Steffan moving to San Francisco, where the band's bassist Cliff Burton showed him around town – only to die, tragically, in a car crash just months later. Clips from Barney's 1996 audio interview with Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield prompt a conversation about our guest's close involvement with the thrashmeisters and his eventual stewardship of their in-house mag-turned-website So What! Following the metallic section of the episode we return to the older San Francisco of Haight-Ashbury and its '60s summer(s) of druggy love. Clips from Gene Sculatti and Davin Seay's 1984 audio interview with Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna bassist Jack Casady – about to turn 80 as we record this episode – give us the chance to ask Steffan about the days of the Grateful Dead and their many hirsute friends. From there we switch to the rather different environment that was late '60s Detroit, paying tribute to poet, political firebrand and MC5 manager John Sinclair. We circle back to Steffan's post-Kerrang! career and hear about his 1999 encounter with David Bowie before Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on newly-added library pieces about LL Cool J and Eels. Many thanks to special guest Steffan Chirazi. Find him on Patreon at patreon.com/steffyspurs and read the Metallica magazine So What! at metallica.com. Listen to the official Metallica podcast at https://metallica.lnk.to/TheMetallicaReport. Pieces discussed: Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister: The Man Behind the Myth, Metallica: Thrash on Delivery, Metallica audio, Jefferson Airplane's Jack Casady audio, Portrait of the Artist: David Bowie, LL Cool J: Time Traveller and Eels: Shootenanny!.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Kill The Lights over Zoom video!Certain bonds cross any and all borders and boundaries. Kill The Lights harbor this kind of connection between them. Even though you've got Michael “Moose” Thomas [drums] and Jason “Jay” James [bass] in Bridgend, Wales, James Clark [vocals] in Minneapolis, MN, Jordan Whelan [guitar] in Grand Rapids, MI, and Travis Montgomery [guitar] in Dallas, TX, the musicians lock into an impenetrable groove that eclipses physical distance. Together, they rally around a tight, taut, and tough vision for heavy metal, manifesting in rafter-reaching anthems and pit-splitting riffs. After piling up millions of streams and earning acclaim from the likes of KERRANG! and Metal Hammer, a sense of unwavering unity drives their second full-length offering, Death Melodies [Fearless Records].Of course, the musicians boast an incredible pedigree… Moose co-founded multiplatinum international heavyweights Bullet For My Valentine, while Jay also played in the band. James fronted Throw The Fight, and Jordan and Travis handled guitar duties for Still Remains and Threat Signal, respectively. Upon forming Kill The Lights, they uncovered uncontainable chemistry, releasing their debut LP The Sinner in the midst of the global pandemic. Among many highlights, “The Faceless” posted up 2 million-plus Spotify streams and counting followed by “Through The Night” and “Shed My Skin,” which each crossed the 1 million mark. Metal Hammer rated it “4-out-of-5 stars” and proclaimed, “Kill The Lights nail the groove and the glory.” Along the way, they wrote and recorded Death Melodies with sessions in Canada, Minneapolis, and across the pond in the UK with producers Chris Clancy and Colin Richardson. A complex theme coursed through the music. “Everybody struggles with different things,” states James. “These are songs about acknowledging and sharing the struggle in life. You're acknowledging the world is a hard place. Hopefully, you can find some solace in it by knowing another person feels the same way."Fittingly, they bust through the door of the next era with the single “Broken Bones.” On the track, galloping drums propel a thrashed-out riff at full speed towards a hummable hook, “You're dead inside, but still alive. There's nothing left but broken bones.” “Much of the record centered around depression and dealing with anxiety,” James goes on. “So, ‘Broken Bones' is about battling your way through life, but sticking with it.”Vulnerable acoustic guitar sets the tone for “Sleep With The Devil” as tension swells into an emotionally charged skyscraping refrain uplifted by a six-part choir harmony. “It's stuff you don't hear too much on a metal record,” Jordan comments. “It stretches the places we can go.”A sinewy guitar line snakes through the understated trudge of “Bleeding,” which is about “living a recurring nightmare and never being able to break the chain.” Then, there's “From Ashes.” Guitar swings like a wrecking ball from melodic verses towards a magnetic refrain. The ride concludes on the transfixing closer “Drowning” as distortion submerges an ethereal chorus.“It had a bit of a grungy vibe to it,” Jordan goes on. “We added some different dynamics on the record that weren't there on the first one.” In the end, Kill The Lights invite everyone to partake in their bond now.We want to hear from you! That means that you can now hear it with Apple Music or Spotify clarity as opposed to the less than desirable ad-riddled YouTube experience we had to endure to prep for this conversation. Does that vastly improve the record's listening experience? No, no it does not. You can't polish a turd. Enter at your own risk. These clips of the end are my favorites: “Slayer - last concert Los Angeles - Angel of Death & Slayer says Goodbye.” It's shaky yet awesome amateur footage from the front row. Over 100,000 fans liked the first post. That initial post soon disappeared. The second Trump photo stands at an untitled Instagram post, on the official Slayer account, @slayerbandofficial, 24 January 2017, which identified it as from being from Tom: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPqUjICAi8d/ Araya explained, “I thought it was funny,” followed by language with a conservative bent: “I was amazed at the comments about the picture. Some positive. Some negative. More amazing was in 2 hours there was 10,000 likes. I never would have guessed that there where so many snowflakes commenting their distaste for the new president. Woke up the next morning and found someone had deleted the post. Can someone please explain why?” This quotation features Araya's post with modified grammar and punctuation, for clarity and courtesy. Keep in mind: In Slayer's 1996 cover of 80s punk nugget “Superficial Love,” Tom changed an anti-Reagan line to “President Clinton can suck my motherf@ckin' d!ck” — which he's allowed to do. And while I'm defending his right to voice his opinions, let's also be clear: I don't agree. Which doesn't matter.

Calling in our good friend Crag from Australia, we chat about the covermount CD from a 1998 issue of Kerrang! The CD is called, obviously, Radio Kerrang! Vol. 5 and it has an intro from the Deftones and an exclusive Soulfly track on it. Remember how bad nu-metal could be at times? Well, it's all on display in this pearler of a collection. Relive it, or live it for the first time, in FROM THE VAULT episode 6.
NEW YEARS DAY singer Ash Costello joins us on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast NEW YEARS DAY announced their fifth studio album “Half Black Heart” in late 2023, following the release of the tracks “Vampyre” and “Secrets”. The record also features the band's 2022 hit “Hurts Like Hell” and more recent single “I Still Believe”. Last fall they also embarked on the “Kiss Of Death” tour with IN THIS MOMENT and ICE NINE KILLS, in addition to being featured on WWE NXT‘s “Halloween Havoc”. Kerrang! magazine counts NEW YEARS DAY among an elite handful of bands inspiring the next generation. Led by “the vibrant force of nature that is frontwoman Ash Costello,” NEW YEARS DAY unleash anthems of discontent and empowerment, delivered with gothic flair and theatrical bombast. Saints and sinners, victims and victors. In sound and vision, NEW YEARS DAY walk the line between darkness and light. The band's duality comes to fruition on “Half Black Heart”, an unrepentant and unashamed album championing discovery, from the darkest secrets to one's inner strength. Unrestrained fury collides with arena-ready glamor, confrontational DIY passion, and melodic hooks. “Hurts Like Hell”, “Vampyre”, “Bulletproof”, “Fearless”, the title track, and the rest of “Half Black Heart” join an already impressive catalog of songs, like “Come For Me”, “Skeletons”, “Kill Or Be Killed” and “Shut Up”. Fans have streamed “Angel Eyes” more than 14 million times on Spotify alone. “Victim To Villain” (2013),“Malevolence” (2015) and “Unbreakable” (2019) deeply resonate with listeners who cherish them as timeless keepsakes, marking different times in their own personal evolution. It's because Costello, who skillfully conjures horror and comic book aesthetics as allegory, is one of them. In cinematic music videos, transcendent live performances, and daily interaction (virtual or in-person) with like-minded misfits, this band makes pleasure from pain. Even when it hurts like hell. In the podcast, Ash Costello talks about the “reunion” of NEW YEARS DAY‘s classic lineup, how the band got involved with the WWE and Rhea Ripley, boring RAMMSTEIN after parties and tons more.
Thrilled to have one of the hottest bands in the world, from Glasgow: Spyres. Spyres have racked up over two million streams on Spotify alone with break-out singles Otherside, Fake ID and I Don't Care, all receiving an incredible outpouring of radio support from the likes of BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders, Radio X's John Kennedy, BBC Introducing Scotland's Phoebe I-H and Vic Galloway. The reaction to the band has been mirrored in press with fevered endorsements from Alt Press, DORK, Gigwise, Kerrang!, The Scottish Sun, Daily Record, Tenement TV, Punktastic and Distorted Sound at a glance. In 2023, the band released their highly anticipated EP ‘Karaoke Sellouts', featuring the likes of Only Thus Could Happen to Me & Money.
KILL THE LIGHTS Drummer Michael "Moose" Thomas and THE GEMS guitarist/bassist Mona Lindgren join us on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast KILL THE LIGHTS is the band featuring former BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE bassist Jason "Jay" James and drummer Michael "Moose" Thomas, alongside former members of THROW THE FIGHT, THREAT SIGNAL, and STILL REMAINS. The group made waves with their debut album, "The Sinner," released in 2020 under Fearless Records. Praised for its "statement songs" (Distorted Sound) and technical prowess, it garnered acclaim for its expansive sound and precise execution (Sonic Perspectives). After piling up millions of streams and earning acclaim from the likes of KERRANG! and Metal Hammer, a sense of unwavering unity drives their second full-length offering, "Death Melodies", which arrives March 8 via Fearless Records. “The best stuff comes when we're together,” states Moose. “We'll joke around for hours, have a few drinks, and the songs write themselves. We're so connected in this way. There's no path. We're not trying to follow anybody. This is the first album that really sounds like Kill The Lights.” In December 2017, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE announced the departure of Thomas, replaced by Jason Bowld (PITCHSHIFTER, AXEWOUND). Bowld had been touring with the band since November 2015, filling in for Thomas, who had taken time off for family reasons. Prior to that, bassist Jason James' departure from BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE was announced in February 2015, during the recording of the band's fifth album, "Venom." Jamie Mathias was brought in as his replacement in May of the same year. In the podcast, "Moose" talks about his stepping away from BFMV, how he came to join KILL THE LIGHTS with his ex-bandmate and plans for the immediate future behind the kit. The second portion of the show features THE GEMS guitarist/bassist Mona Lindgren. Emerging from the remnants, Swedish rock newcomers THE GEMS, comprising former THUNDERMOTHER members vocalist Guernica Mancini, drummer Emlee Johansson, and guitarist/bassist Mona “Demona” Lindgren, announce their debut album, "Phoenix," which arrived on January 26, 2024, via Napalm Records. THE GEMS' potential was swiftly validated with the release of their inaugural standalone single, "Like A Phoenix," in the summer of 2023. This debut single soared to the No. 2 position on the German Rock Radio Airplay Charts, catching the attention of rock enthusiasts worldwide. The album's captivating opener, "Aurora," sets the stage, allowing Mancini's distinctive, powerful, and bluesy vocals to shine. Following this, the infectious rock anthem "Queens" celebrates feminine strength and resilience. Themes of empowerment and perseverance echo throughout "Phoenix," exemplified by tracks like the standout "Send Me To The Wolves," advocating for self-assertion and triumph over adversity. In the show, Mona discusses what exactly happened with THUNDERMOTHER, the formation of THE GEMS, the crushing new album "Phoenix" and tons more.

We also discuss their turn towards heavier "Southern metal" music in the 2000s, the lead singers that took over for Danny Joe Brown, and even the band's controversial relationship with the confederate flag. We also pay tribute to all of the men who played in this band that are no longer with us today. We had the pleasure of interviewing RedHook over Zoom video!RedHook are a fiercely independent, shapeshifting alt-rock foursome from Sydney, Australia who've quickly accumulated a global fanbase and tens of millions of streams through their powerful songwriting and captivating live show.Featuring the core creative duo of Emmy Mack and Craig Wilkinson, two strangers from regional New South Wales whose paths collided after moving to Sydney in 2017, RedHook combine with young gun drummer Alex Powys and seasoned bassist Ned Jankovic to create heartfelt, attitude-filled and relatable alternative rock music that consistently defies classification. The strength of their debut single ‘Minute On Fire' in 2018 was enough to attract the interest of one of the lead promoters of the UK's iconic Download Festival, who swiftly invited RedHook over to play. The band were then snapped up by The Hen House Artist Management (worldwide) and inked booking deals with New World Artists (AUS) and Wasserman (UK/EU), going on to conquer some of Australia's biggest music festival stages (Download, Good Things, Stonefest, BIGSOUND). They also completed their debut international tour (supporting metal titans Three Days Grace across the UK & Europe), launched their own gender diversity-inspired alternative festival in Sydney, 'UsFest', and undertook four complete Australian tours (selling out the Melbourne and Sydney legs of their own debut headline tour). As RedHook's global fan base grew steadily with each single release and live show, many big things followed. The band were named triple j Unearthed feature artist, Kerrang! Radio feature artist and were invited to host the ABC's iconic rage program. They've consistently featured as one of the top 50 most-played artists on triple j Unearthed every year since 2019.2021 saw RedHook release their long-awaited debut EP ‘Bad Decisions' which has ticked over 13 million Spotify streams and had its two lead singles added to rotation on triple j. The record earned praise from Kerrang! (UK), Rock Sound (UK), Rolling Stone (AUS) and many more, even scooping a 2022 AIR Independent Music Awards nomination for best punk EP or album.RedHook continued their steady rise across 2022 with their debut performances at Australia's UNIFY Gathering, Groovin' The Moo and boutique festival Rolling Sets, as well as playing one of the world's most iconic rock festivals Rock AM Ring/Rock im Park in Germany alongside the likes of Green Day and Muse, accompanied by a second tour of Europe supporting The Faim.Their own headline ‘Bring Ya Mates' tour was also a huge success with multiple sold out shows around Australia as it emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by a mammoth 28-date, two-month-long regional Australian tour as main support for metalcore titans In Hearts Wake and a triumphant return the Good Things festival stage alongside Bring Me The Horizon and Deftones, where RedHook made history as the first band to grace the lineup twice. In May 2022, RedHook returned with ‘Jabberwocky' their most gut-wrenching single to date, which was immediately added to triple j high rotation and added to the cover of Spotify's popular ‘All New Rock' Playlist. Follow-up singles ‘SAY' and ‘Soju' Ft. Sly Withers have both since been added to full rotation on triple j.RedHook recently released their long-anticipated debut album, Postcard From A Living Hell!We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Holding Absence over Zoom video! From the moment of our first breath to the very last gasp we take before we die, we never stop growing as people. Every trial and tribulation, every heartbreak, success and failure, every scar, blemish and wrinkle is another brushstroke illuminating our life's unique canvas. As Holding Absence frontman Lucas Woodland sings on “The Angel in the Marble,” the closing track on his band's outstanding third album The Noble Art of Self-Destruction (out now via SharpTone Records), we are, each and every one of us, “a puzzle, a painting, a work of art in the making.”Holding Absence's new album is a testament to how our life's story is never fully told, with opportunities for change and growth found in every moment, from the depths of despair to the euphoria of our greatest loves. Whether adding flourishes of colour to an already picturesque painting, or chiselling away at the marble to reveal the beauty within, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction – the final act in a trilogy of records encompassing the first chapter of Holding Absence's career – speaks to how we are each an unfinished work of art with new meanings and qualities waiting to be discovered.A record Lucas describes as a form of self-therapy that sees him more candid and comfortable with his emotions than ever before, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction brims with a level of energy, excitement and sheer weight of feeling that is unparalleled in contemporary alternative music. Whether Lucas and his bandmates – guitarist Scott Carey, bassist Ben Elliott and drummer Ash Green – are performing relatable anthems about imposter syndrome and self-loathing like massive singles “Crooked Melody” and “False Dawn,” gushing love ballads (“Honey Moon”) or existential reflections on suicide (“Death Nonetheless”), the four-piece's approach on their new album is packed with the kind of vigour that saw Kerrang! label them as British rock's “new leading light” and Loudwire proclaim the Cardiff natives to be “the UK's most exciting new rock band.”Recorded at Canada's Jukasa Studios with producer Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Bury Tomorrow), The Noble Art of Self-Destruction builds further into the lore of Holding Absence that sets them apart from many of their contemporaries. Taking influence from a varied array of sources including Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo, sci-fi blockbuster Star Wars and the Japanese pottery art of Kintsugi, Holding Absence's new LP speaks to the desire of Lucas and his bandmates to create a project that exists as so much more than just a band.Having broken one million monthly listeners on Spotify and with top song “Afterlife” racking up in excess of 30,000,000 streams, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction looks a sure bet to bring even more success the way of Holding Absence, who've toured with the likes of Funeral For a Friend, Electric Callboy and You Me At Six. Previous LP The Greatest Mistake of My Life saw the band grace the covers of Kerrang! and Rock Sound, with glowing coverage from outlets including Loudwire, Alternative Press and Upset. The Guardian, meanwhile, praised Holding Absence as a band “making pop-rock anthems with rib-rattling drumming and mainstream appeal.”With that love only set to grow once The Noble Art of Self-Destruction is released, it's important for Lucas to emphasize how this album represents that what's come so far is just the beginning of Holding Absence's journey. We want to hear from you!
