Perhaps two of the biggest objections you hear against God's existence are slavery and hell. Why would God, a loving God, allow such things? This week we continue our conversation with apologist with Josh McDowell Ministries, Matthew Tingblad, co-author with Josh McDowell of Why Did God Do That? Discovering God's Goodness in the Hard Passages of Scripture. Matthew will share with us his insights about these difficult objections and encourage us to focus on God's holiness and goodness toward us in Christ Jesus. Matthew Tingblad is a writer and speaker holding a Master of Divinity from Talbot School of Theology. Matthew has a passion to grow and strengthen the church with a firm grounding for the Christian faith. With wisdom and sensitivity, he offers a unique approach to tough biblical questions and the deeply felt needs of teenagers, college students, and young professionals today by integrating theology and philosophy into apologetics.  Matthew has led thousands of individuals to grow in a rock-solid conviction that God is real, God is good, and God is worth it.Related Links: Access additional Watchman Fellowship resources related to this week's podcast: Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on Annihilationism by Daniel Ray: www.watchman.org/Annihilationism Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on Atheism by Dr. Robert M. Why? We often have many "Why?" questions when it comes to God and our relationship with Him. Why would God allow evil or why would God flood the earth? God does not tell us everything we would like to know, but He has revealed to us everything we need to know, including the fact that we can trust Him with our lives and that He is ultimately good. That is the premise for the book, Why Would God Do That? Discovering God's Goodness in the Hard Passages of Scripture, written by our guest this week and next on the profile, apologist with Josh McDowell Ministries, Matthew Tingblad. Matthew Tingblad is a writer and speaker holding a Master of Divinity from Talbot School of Theology. Scriptures are very express and abundant in this matter- that the eternal punishment of the wicked will consist in sensible misery and torment, and not in annihilation. - What is said of Judas is worthy to be observed here, -It had been good for that man if he had not been born-- Mat. 26-24. - This seems plainly to teach us, that the punishment of the wicked is such that their existence, upon the whole, is worse than non-existence. But if their punishment consists merely in annihilation, this is not true. - The wicked, in their punishment, are said to weep, and wail, and gnash their teeth- which implies not only real existence, but life, knowledge, and activity, and that they are in a very sensible and exquisite manner affected with their punishment, Isa. 33-14. Sinners in the state of their punishment are represented to dwell with everlasting burnings. But if they are only turned into nothing, where is the foundation for this representation-- It is absurd to say that sinners will dwell with annihilation, for there is no dwelling in the case. It is also absurd to call annihilation a burning, which implies a state of existence, sensibility, and extreme pain- whereas in annihilation there is neither.

And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.'The Facts About HELLThe Bible refers to the idea of hell some 54 times.OT references use the word Sheol & Hades11 out of 12 times Jesus used the phrase GehennaNT "GehennaOT "Hinnom," a valley south of JerusalemThe History Of The Valley Of Hinnom:Reign of King Ahaz - (2 Chronicles 28, 33) the valley was used by Baal worshipers to offer their children in their furnaces to their god Molech.Ministry of Jeremiah - (Jeremiah 7, 19) referred to the valley as "The Valley of Slaughter."Reign of King Josiah - (2 Kings 23:10) proclaimed "defiled" and no one was allowed to use it for any purpose.Ministry of Jesus - valley evolved into a garbage dump. In this episode, Brian and Chad interview Chris Date about his view on conditional immortality, which is the idea that the final punishment of the wicked is death and total destruction rather than eternal conscious torment. Chris provides an overview of the two contrasting views and shares his journey of how he became convinced of annihilationism after originally believing in eternal conscious torment. He then dives into key biblical texts that are often used to argue for eternal torment, such as Mark 9:48, Matthew 25:46, Revelation 14:9-11, and Jude 7, demonstrating how these passages can actually better support conditionalism. Chris also makes a concise case for his view by looking at biblical evidence on immortality, the vision of eternity, substitutionary atonement, and the fate of the wicked described as death and destruction. For more resources from Chris on this topic, check out the Rethinking Hell website www.rethinkinghell.com and YouTube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@RethinkingHellas well as Chris' personal website at https://chrisdate.info While Chris hopes listeners will consider his perspective, his ultimate desire is for unity in the body of Christ despite differences on this non-essential doctrine.================================We appreciate your feedback. If you're on TWITTER, you can follow Chad @TBapologetics.You can follow Brian @TheBrianAutenAnd of course, you can follow @Apologetics315If you have a question or comment for the podcast, record it and send it our way using www.speakpipe.com/Apologetics315 or you can email us at podcast@apologetics315.com

The Doctrine of Eschatology: Judgment and Hell Chris Hefner Three Overarching Principles: The Hebrew linear view of history means that the world is advancing toward a telos or end. We need to enlarge our perspective on the subject of what is to come because of the vastness of what has been. We would be wise to hold our eschatological perspectives a little less tightly than the other main doctrines of the Bible. General Order of Eschatological Events: Jesus' Return (Parousia)Þ ResurrectionÞ Final Judgment Þ Hell/Lake of Fire Clarifying Passages: Matthew 25:31-46—the eternal nature of blessing and judgment 1 Corinthians 3:10-15—the nature of the believer's judgment Revelation 20:4-15—the final judgment (Great White Throne) Theological Considerations: Who receives judgment and reward? Universalism, Pluralism, Inclusivism, Exclusivism. The questions of compatibility: Is everlasting judgment compatible with God's justice; with his love; with his victory; with his grace? Annihilationism—those who remain reprobate (in unbelief) are eventually annihilated utterly and do not live in judgment forever. Conditional Immortality—only those who believe are granted eternal life. Theological Takeaway: To ignore the biblical doctrine of hell is to misunderstand the holiness of God and/or to minimize the depth of human sin. Worship Takeaway: The doctrine of hell depicts the holy wrath of the one true God. It invites (demands) reverential fear. Evangelistic Takeaway: If we take the Bible to be true and authoritative, then we must pray and share the gospel that those who do not believe may come to Christ. Hell is likely the least favorite topic of most Christians. It's often times considered one of the hardest doctrines to swallow. The idea of an eternity of misery separated from God seems horrendous, so it's no wonder we often like to avoid it. But there is a certain segment of Christians who believe we have gotten Hell wrong. In fact, they think the Bible portrays a very different image of Hell. Hell, they argue, isn't a place of unending suffering but simply nonexistence. In other words, the fate of the unredeemed is less like Dante's Inferno and more like just ceasing to exist altogether. Here to defend this view from a Biblical standpoint is Chris Date, one of the foremost defenders of the view often called Annihilationism.

Welcome to Talk Heathen! Today we have the newest member of the TH hosting team, Jimmy Jr, and Richard Gilliver fielding your queries about abortion and spiritual beliefs.Michael in FL asks advice on dealing with the fear of hell. Oddly, he grew up believing in Annihilationism and is now feeling depression-like effects after a dream of going to hell. It's just programming from religion so you don't question your beliefs. It takes time to unlearn that. Look into Recovering from Religion and the secular therapy project. RecoveringfromReligion.orgKyle in IN says there should be lines drawn where a fetus becomes a baby in regards to abortion. There are lines in place currently, they shouldn't be legislated across the board. Every pregnancy is different. The decision to end a pregnancy should be between a medical professional and a patient. Don't strip people's bodily autonomy. Marsha in CO wants to clear up misinformation that people use to justify their pro life stance. For example, late term abortions and bodily autonomy. We're glad you called in.An outright ban puts people at risk if they encounter an emergency in the third trimester. Why do we question bodily autonomy when it comes to this one topic? Nick in NY asks how we can incorporate religious, or “spiritual”, experiences without a god belief while not buying into the dogma. We definitely need new words to describe these concepts to get away from the implied religious ideas. Don't buy into religion, that sense of wonder and awe is in all of us. Stuart in England advises to not self censure and think through those questions when the fear of hell comes up. He was terrified of questioning his beliefs and those helped him during that time. Stay on the path of questioning and working through your hell beliefs. Otari from Georgia claims abortion is murder because the pregnancy has signs of life. (sigh) Abortion isn't even legally considered murder. The bible disagrees with your hard stance. That book supports and even gives instructions regarding abortion. Question your beliefs and why your religion contradicts your holy book.Jack in FL says that he is pro abortion but it is killing a living human being. Terminating a pregnancy is not a killing, murder, or manslaughter. People need to have the freedom to talk to experts and decide to end their pregnancy. Thank you for tuning in to your community! This week's Talk Heathen To Me prompt is: What is a sin that Jesus didn't intend to die for?
