Welcome to our latest look back over the past weeks news, views, articles and social media and we are delighted to be joined by award winning journalist Gemma O'Doherty. Gemma is a rare commodity …. a journalist who wants to expose injustice and speak the truth. Born and raised in Ireland, she has exposed some of the darkest corners of Irish life as an investigative journalist and has fought against the Covid tyranny and corruption that has engulfed her country. We have followed her work for years and look forward to hearing her thoughts on topics this episode including.... - Brits brace for the biggest tax burden since World War Two. - Amazon and Facebook see their earnings plunge. - Ban on free movement continues: Draconian plan to stop people driving between neighbourhoods in the UK. - British supermarket coercing customers by offering discounts to those who get a flu jab in store. - Irish hospitals restrict visitors due to Covid. - About 1,000 students at Virginia high school out sick with flu-like symptoms. - Corporate Performers Dying, Falling Ill And Collapsing On Stage. - Study suggests you should cut your meat consumption to two burgers a week to save planet. Gemma O'Doherty is a multi-award-winning journalist whose work has shone a light on some of the darkest corners of Irish life. Former Chief Features writer at the Irish Independent, where she worked for almost 20 years, she has exposed many cases of murder and child sexual abuse that have been covered up by An Garda Siochana and the State. A Masters' graduate from UCD, she was the first journalist to support the work of Garda whistle-blowers Maurice McCabe and John Wilson and revealed how former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan had abused road safety laws for his own personal gain. Her two-year investigation into the cover-up of Fr Niall Molloy's brutal murder led to a state inquiry. When Denis O'Brien – the Clinton's biggest Irish donor – became the owner of INM, she was ordered to give up her anti-corruption work or leave her job. She successfully sued INM and went onto become a film producer. Her documentary ‘Mary Boyle: The Untold Story' has been viewed more than 1 million times and won several international awards. The film about Ireland's longest and youngest missing person revealed how a politician had ordered the police to shield the political suspect whom they believed had raped and murdered the child. Her work led to a new ‘inquiry' and marches around the country demanding justice for the six-year-old child whose killer is protected to this day by Irish Gardai. Gemma's investigation into the disappearance of toddler Madeleine McCann exposed grave lies in the BBC's reporting of the case which were designed to mislead the public and protect a potential suspect. She also exposed the decades-long scandal of paedophilia at one of Dublin's top private boys' schools Terenure College. Her work directly led to the jailing of one of Ireland's best-known rugby coaches John McClean, a serial predator who abused dozens of young boys at the school. Her research has revealed shocking Garda corruption in the murder investigations of Sophie Du Plantier, Raonaid Murray, Shane O'Farrell and Shane Tuohey and how the Irish police have framed citizens like Brian Mahon, Ian Bailey and Aaron Brady. Gemma's work on health and environment earned her the title of Campaigning Journalist of the Year for her investigation on water fluoridation and its dangers to public health. For decades, through her campaigning journalism, she has worked tirelessly to expose the harm done by Big Pharma vaccines, industrial wind turbines, glyphosate, and chemotherapy. She is passionate about restoring sovereignty in Ireland, protecting Irish culture, heritage and family businesses while ending the globalist policies that have left the country unrecognisable and its citizens burdened with debt and bureaucracy. With her colleague John Waters, she was one of the first citizens in the world to take a legal case against the unconstitutional Covid19 Lockdown to defend the fundamental freedoms and livelihoods of the Irish people. Award winning journalist, author and special correspondent for the Irish Examiner, Mick Clifford speaks to me about the new cold case investigation into the murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier. With multiple documentaries, podcasts, endless media coverage and rumours around the crime and the one man suspected of committing it, is it possible that a new piece of evidence  prompted the launch of the investigation? Mick vividly remembers the the time at which the murder took place and talks to me about finer details that may have been missed, his own gut feeling and a theory that gained ground in recent years. In the second half of our conversation we talk about Mick's journey from engineering in UCC to discovering writing while dossing around Australia with a backpack. He gives me his thoughts on the future of journalism, the very Irish problem that leads to most of our scandals, Maurice McCabe, the planning tribunals and much much more. Sandra Hurley knows what it's all about covering politics in a pandemic. A mathematics whizz kid - her career has taken her from the corporate world of investment banking to the newsroom. You'll likely best know her as the face of RTE's political news coverage bringing us the latest news and developments from Government Buildings. She's reported everywhere from the streets of New York to the Papal conclave in Rome and the London bombings of 2007 and has covered some of the biggest national stories from the Banking Inquiry to the vindication of Garda Whistleblower, Maurice McCabe and the Charleton Tribunal. In this episode we discuss: why she swapped mathematics for the newsroom; how the public perception of politics has changed; and she tells me about the story she covered during her time in New York that would later be recounted on television in the popular legal drama “The Good Wife”. She also offers plenty of advice for young aspiring journalists. I hope you enjoy the episode. Uncovering a culture of ‘ticket-fixing’ in An Garda Síochána, he also had information on other serious wrongdoings within the force. Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness has said there is “no support” among the party's membership for a renewal of the confidence and supply agreement Mr McGuinness said it would be “absolutely wrong” for Fianna Fail to extend the agreement which underpins the Fine Gael led Government as they currently cannot act as a “true opposition party”. He said Fianna Fáil “pretend” it can influence government policy under the arrangement. In a wide-ranging interview on Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast, the Carlow Kilkenny TD also said he would put his name forward for the Fianna Fáil leadership once Micheál Martin's tenure comes to an end. “I am interested in the leadership of Fianna Fáil I make no bones about that,” he said. “Everybody else in politics at any level strives to be better and tries to get positions where they are more influential for the people they represent,” he added. On the confidence and supply agreement, he said the majority of Fianna Fail TDs “understand full well that it's over”. “What we are looking at here now is the final waltz of the evening where the two parties either go together or go different ways and quite frankly there is no support for another confidence and supply arrangement,” “We are in opposition but we can't be an opposition. We are not in government but we pretend to influence government and their policies and we are getting the blame for everything and the government is getting the credit for the aspects which are positive,” he added. He said his relationship with Micheál Martin is “politically not what it should be” but he insisted he is happy with his role in the party and what he has achieved during his career. Mr McGuinness also discusses his work on vulture funds in the Finance Committee and his relationship with Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.

Former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald a victim of “fake news” and was not given due process

Former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald has suggested she was a victim of “fake news” and was not given due process before she was forced to resign last year. Speaking about Garda whistleblower controversy which led to he downfall for the first-time, Ms Fitzgerald said her resignation was “inevitable” because of a “media and political frenzy”. “We talk a lot about fake news and other countries and fake news but the whole thing developed into such a frenzy,” she told Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast. Ms Fitzgerald handed in her resignation to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar last November following a week of controversy surrounding her knowledge of an alleged Garda legal strategy to discredit whistleblower Maurice McCabe. Fianna Fáil threatened to support a motion of no confidence in the then Tánaiste if she did not resign. After days of political uncertainty, Ms Fitzgerald dramatically decided to resign hours before the Dáil motion was to be debated. She said she took decision because she believed a general election was not in “the interest of Fine Gael or in the interest of the country”. She accused Opposition politicians of looking for a “head on a plate” and said both Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin did not afford her “due process” during the scandal which was subsequently investigated by Justice Peter Charleston's Disclosures Tribunal. “Obviously it was the most difficult period I've ever had in politics. And I think it was a very difficult situation and decision for Leo as well – politically and personally. It was a very big call by him and by me and for the party at that time,” she added. The former Justice Minister said the Taoiseach was “very loyal” to her throughout the scandal which saw Fianna Fáil publicly state they had no confidence in Ms Fitzgerald. “He (Mr Varadkar) was always into due process and Fine Gael was always into due process. Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail didn't on that occasion but there we go that's politics,” she said. “I will absolutely wait for the Charleton Report some time in October before I make any comment about that but the one thing I will say there was certainly due process down there and I think due process is always what I have wanted to see and it is the way I have treated other people and it is the way the Fine Gael party has always believe people should be treated,” she added. Ms Fitzgerald was taking part in a special live recording of the Floating Voter podcast where she discussed the recently published biography on the Fine Gael leader: ‘Leo Varadkar – A Very Modern Taoiseach'. Former Independent Newspaper political correspondent and current government adviser Niall O'Connor returned to the podcast to discuss the biography he co-author with Independent Newspaper deputy political editor Philip Ryan.

Then Alan Kelly of Labour and John McGuinness of Fianna Fáil join us to talk about the treatment of Garda whistleblowers Maurice McCabe and Keith Harrison, and what they want from the tribunal of inquiry that is now to be set up. Deputy Kelly says he wants to "flush out" any members of Government who were briefed by senior Gardaí about allegations against Sgt McCabe, while Deputy McGuinness expresses no faith in the government his own party props up.
