James Parnell & The New Wave Of Returning Irish Abroad

In April 2021, for the first time since 1851, the population in the Republic of Ireland was estimated to have passed the five million mark. Many believe a big part of this story has to do with returning Irish nationals. This weekend I became one of them. According to CSO findings, 65,200 people immigrated to Ireland in the year to April 2021, 30,200 of whom were returning Irish nationals, the highest number of returning Irish nationals since 2007. 2022 is set to be an even bigger year for the return of the Irishmen and women abroad. James Parnell has made helping these people re-integrate into Ireland a huge part of his successful coaching business. His site ANewDawninIreland.com  is a resource for both returning emigrants and those coming to Ireland for the first time. A New Dawn in Ireland was the first blended online and offline training/coaching programme to inspire and help people create the life they want back in Ireland. Today on the podcast, with my car packed up and ready to head for the ferry, I took a moment to talk James about what he has learned through his years of meeting the returning Irish. It's fascinating stuff whether you're on the road home, thinking about it or at home wondering how tricky it might be for a member of your family to get back. James is a natural communicator with an abundance of empathetic, positive and creative energy. It's easy to see why his business The Wellbeing Gym and the MAP model he created for personal wellbeing and peak performance have been so successful. The Wellbeing Gym provides online, offline and blended life design, self-leadership, performance and productivity training programmes to individuals and businesses. Irishman In America - A Sneak Preview Of The New Trump Album (Part 1)

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2022 38:38

This week we got short glimpse of what to expect from Donald Trump if he runs for office in 2024. This time it seems angrier, more out there and at its core, driven by revenge. Marion McKeone of the Sunday Business Post has been taking in the reaction to former the President's speech at the America First Policy Institute's event in Washington. There were a few notable omissions from the speech and a few moments that drew gasps. Meanwhile Alex Jones faced the music for his grotesque treatment of the family of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre. Jones repeatedly “lied and attacked the parents of murdered children” when he told his Infowars audience that the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting was a hoax an attorney for one of the victim's parents told a jury on Tuesday at the beginning of a trial to determine how much Jones must pay for defaming them. We look at why Joe Mansion has suddenly rolled over and allowed President Biden to score some big legislative wins. Was he made an offer he could not refuse? Or was it something else entirely. Finally, Marion wonders if trading an arms dealer for Britney Griner (a deal that is now on the table) is a wise move or if Putin will take the chance to pants Joe Biden in front of the world. My Hidden Race is the story of Olympic medallist Anyika Onuora, who stood on the podium at every major championship in athletics. Behind all the success and smiles lay something sinister that she could not speak about for years. The she has written with Jonathan Drennan doesn't go into detail about the technicalities of her sport. Instead, it gives an unflinching testimony of what it takes to pursue your dreams as a Black British woman against all odds and lifts the lid on the reality of life as a female athlete in a way that nobody else has done before her. She admits that there have been far too many years of silence caught in a system. Now Anyika is determined to make up for lost time and use her story to inspire and heal others. Today on Irishman Abroad I talk to her about the writing of My Hidden Race with Jonathan Drennan. I could not put this book down. It will take you into a world that often takes place far from the spotlight of the Olympic torch and shines an intense light on the brutal reality of professional sport for many black females. A week later it was confirmed that he had Stage 3 brain cancer, which normally comes with a life expectancy of 5 years. Because he's younger he might get longer than this but either way he has decided that he's going to spend his last years dedicating himself to achieving something difficult and worthwhile. Breaking the world record for the most money raised for running a marathon. Remarkably he's not looking for your money, he's simply looking to grow his social media channels so that when his they gets sponsors, he can donate that money. That approach is working. The evidence is on his channels. Just the other week he gathered a huge crowd of runners in London for a run. For every single one that showed up, Brewdog donated £10 to charity. With many Americans experiencing complete shock and disillusionment with the senseless mass shooting in Highland Park, our friend and US correspondent for the Sunday Business Post examines the details that are emerging around this awful event and what we know about the shooter. Is there a new type of juvenile extremist phenomenon growing under the noses of authorities? Could assault rifles ever be banned again or are President Biden's hands completely tied on yet another issue. Democrats are no longer hiding the fatigue with the sitting President. The events of the last few weeks and the action of the Supreme Court on issues of gun control and abortion rights have somehow failed to galvanise support for the Democrats. Why is this? Marion tries to answer this question and looks to the next round of January 6th hearings, the incarnation of a US basketball star in Russia and the bizarre case in a West Virginia county ravaged by opioid addiction where a federal judged ruled in favour of three major U.S. drug distributors that stood accused of causing the health crisis by distributing 81 million pills over eight years. If you climb the mountain too fast or skip certain steps, you can easily plummet from where you are. Our team captains Aisling and Neil jump on the live line to talk about how they found week two and ask Sonia about how to cope with doubt and nutrition. Meanwhile in our weekly trip around Strava we find one listener, Elaine De Courcy who shocked her self-with a break through 5k time. In the extended Patreon (www.returnofthecraic.compatreon.com/irishmanabroad) episode you can hear more about this week's 5 x 1 mile repeats workout and how best to do it, the feedback of our listeners around the world and Sonia's most recent bizarre sign spotting expedition in the woods near Portland. George Hamilton -The Nation Holds Its Breathe

Born in Belfast, George Hamilton has worked in broadcasting for four decades. In that time he his voice and ability to tell a story as it unfolds have made him the undisputed voice of Irish football. George's commentary like John Motson, is the soundtrack that sung by little boys and girls dreaming of winning world cups and scoring goals in the backyards when nobody is watching . He has captured the highs and lows of Irish sport for generations of fans, ever since he first took up the microphone in the mid-seventies, and he has been enthralling his audiences ever since. When I saw that he recently penned his memoir The Nation Holds Its Breath - I was delighted by the prospect of an hour long chat on Irishman Abroad with him. He doesn't disappoint and neither does the book. It takes us on an affectionate journey from the Cregagh Road in East Belfast to an emotional farewell salute from Big Jack Charlton on the hallowed Anfield turf in 1995. Not surprisingly, the book went on to be nominated at the Irish Book Awards.   Hear the whole conversation by supporting us on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad & get access to tonnes of bonus content, weekly episodes, mini series and interviews from the Irishman Abroad. Irishman In America - Who Is Cassidy Hutchinson & The Supreme Court Rampage (Part 1)

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2022 30:06

Last week seems like an eternity ago when the Supreme Court is doing everything it can to turn back the hands of time. This week award winning US correspondent Marion McKeone explains the sense of bewilderment across much of America as 6 conservative judges make their mark, one brave Republican stands up to the bullies, Ghislaine Maxwell goes down with two fingers in the air and the prospect of violence in the streets seems very real. I wonder about the absence of  "checks and balances" as the rest of the government seems out of ideas and options to reign in a court that just yesterday sets its sights on the environmental protection agency and now looks set to challenge the freedom of the press. While the January 6th committee produced its most shocking testimony to date, Marion explains who exactly Cassidy Hutchinson is and just why her stand involves so much sacrifice. In the second part of this conversation on Patreon.com/irishmanabroad we hear how Liz Chaney has suggested that Trump's team have tried to intimidate witnesses cooperating with the committee. Could this be the straw that breaks the orange camel's legal back? Finally Marion gives us a look inside two courtrooms. One featured Ghislaine Maxwell's grotesque attempt to reclaim the #MeToo movement for herself as she was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The other featured the disgraced pop star R Kelly who was found guilty on a further 9 counts of sexual offences and human trafficking. We definitely need something good this weekend to take our minds away from all of this for at least one hour. Marion recommends a movie from 1962 that still holds up today and I go for the superb Nate Bargatze. After week one on the road to the Antrim Coast Half Marathon Sonia asks us to review and adjust based on what we have learned. We dial in our team captains and a few squad members to get their takes on how the plan felt. Then coach Trevor Cummins jumps on the Irishman Abroad LiveLive (00447543122330) to advise us on what to do with the cross-training days within the plan. Sitting on the deck of her team house in Oregon, Sonia breaks down how to assess if your paces are accurate and why erring on the side of caution will always benefit you in a training block such as this. Scheduling the runs was a concern for both of our captains Neil and Aisling last week but in the end it was Sonia who struggled to fit in her Sunday long-run while coaching at the US National Track Championships. We get a little update on how Union Athletic Club faired over the weekend. Over the last few weeks Sonia has drilled home the importance of the easy run and the need for a stark differential between these runs and our hard session efforts. I put a few questions to her form the listeners in relation to this including whether our heart rate is the number one guide for keeping the easiest runs where they should be. After just one sitting we got a definitive, "Yes!" Marion McKeone is on the ground and watching every single minute so you don't have to. She gives us her "take aways" from week one, the moments that matter and what to expect from here. Sports scientist and athletics coach Dominic Munnelly jumps on the Live Line to talk about the mistakes he sees many of his clients make and how best to avoid the road blocks that a lot of people seem to hit. The 80/20 theory (the splitting of training between low intensity and high intensity) goes way way back in the history of coaching Olympians but it takes an eternity for most people to catch on to its benefits (this includes me!). Jarlath asks about the bizarre suggestion that arming teachers is the answer to this problem and whether this idea is now gaining ground. Later in the show Marion looks at a story coming out of San Francisco this week. While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded to the announcement by the Catholic archbishop of San Francisco that she can no longer receive communion because of her stance on abortion access, could the Vatican get involved? We look at the midterm election in Georgia. Has the "king making" power of Donald Trump finally cracked? As Brian Kemp, the Republican governor of Georgia, defeated former senator David Perdue, who had been endorsed by the Donald. After an unbroken run of episodes spanning nearly 2 years Marion McKeone was unavailable to record An Irishman In America this week due to personal reasons. So we went into the archives and found Jarlath's original interview with her from on An Irishman Abroad (Originally released November 2019). In a rare and personal conversation, Marion opens up about her early life, Dublin in the 1980s, her urge to leave the country and one particularly hilarious tale of going AWOL from a summer job as the world's least qualified tennis instructor following a prank involving the Soviet flag. It's fascinating to look back and hear Marion mourn the loss of carefree America after 9/11 and how at the time of recording she believed there was every chance Donald Trump would be re-elected. It's also a time capsule from the final months before the pandemic and a rare insight into this brilliant Irish journalist, broadcaster and writer.
