John McGuinness, Fianna Fail TD for Carlow Kilkenny and Chair of the Oireachtas Finance Committee
Young people in Clare claim the government's proposal to introduce a tax credit for themselves and their peers won't buck historical trends of emigration. Measures to keep recently gradated students in Ireland will be included in the upcoming budget, with calls for it to be central to government policy. The Department of Enterprise's pre-budget submission is set to include Minister Peter Burke's proposal of a €750 tax credit for people aged under 25. This forms part of an attempt by the government to stem the tide of young people leaving the country after they finish third level education. Former Ennis Independent local election candidate, Ruairí Keenan believes although it's a positive step, it will not provide a long term solution. Oireachtas Finance Committee Chair, John McGuinness, has since claimed the initial proposal was too low and that as much as €5,000 should be awarded as an incentive to young people. Housing supply is also a major issue with keeping newly graduated students in the country, with research property advisory, Savills finding that population growth exceeded home delivery by 4 to 1 between 2015 and 2023. Former Fine Gael election candidate from Kilkee, Mike Taylor claims young people have always emigrated and will continue to do so.

In an exclusive sitdown with the Tank Slappers podcast, McGuinness discusses his season and what went wrong. He also talks about his future plans - which have included talks with Paul Bird about racing one of his Ducatis next season - and gives his thoughts on the loss of the Zero TT electric race and what could be done to rescue it.
Today's Face's & Places episode takes us to the shores of Lough Rynn, and more specifically the grounds of Lough Rynn Castle for the Harvest and Vintage Festival held there at the end of August. A great day's entertainment and excitement for all ages as the modern met the historic in the most scenic of locations. Breifne first caught up with Captain Jack Sparrow or , of Corvenieos Entertainment, who entertained the younger folks during the day, allowing the parents to take their time drifting through the various stalls and exhibits on the fabulous grounds of Lough Rynn Castle Hotel. Johnny Brady talks about his summer exploits which saw him play at many of the counties numerous festivals over the last few months including Manorhamilton, Leitrim Village and Ballinamore before his afternoon performance at the festival here. Tommy from Shannon River Adventure has us heading to the sky on his movable climbing wall. John McGuinness, chairman of the festival, looks back at the success of the day celebrating the biggest crowd in the events history with attendees from far and wide across the north west. He thanks the Lough Rynn Hotel for hosting the event and permitting the festival use the grounds of the hotel all in aid of the Bornacoola Community Development group who provide community facilities in the parish of Bornacoola. We hear about Rooskey After School's attempts to raise funds to develop the facility and provide a quality service for the community of Rooskey, looking after the youngest generation of local children. Their fundraising draw includes a top prize of a Charolais heifer. Joe Blount, the head beekeeper of Lough Rynn Bee Keepers association shares with us a little bit about how they create their own honey from local bees just half a mile from the hotel grounds. Author and Illustrator Dolores Keaveney tells us about her children's books including 'If I Were A Bee' and 'The Little Sunflower Seed' as she talks about her next book, her 15th publication, 'Dee The Bee'. Woodturner Martin Reilly discusses some of his own work, a collection of bowls, bread boards and cake stands, which has been flying off the shelves at the crafts tent in the festival. Patrick McDonagh from Boyle talks about his restored Jeep which served in World War II in 1943. The journey it took from France and the low countries at the tail end of the war to north Roscommon and how cool it makes him the coolest dad in the playground in his son's school. Finally we chat to Mike Oliver and his owl Enid as they move around the fair ground and take pictures with the children who are captivated by Mikes buddy.
It's a fresh start on the show today as the event guide will be hosted by the newest member of the Leitrim Daily team, Órla McNabola. She's chatting to Marina Conway, CEO of the Western Forestry Co-op, about the inaugural Woodlands Festival taking place on Sunday at Killegar House, Carrigallen. Órla dropped into the Breffni Players in Carrick on Shannon for final rehearsals for their production of "Conversations on a Homecoming" next week in The Dock in Carrick on Shannon. She chats to actors Annetha Kieran, Oliver Fallon and director Sinead Quinn. Breifne caught up with both John McGuinness, Chairman of the Lough Rynn Harvest and Vintage Festival this Sunday and Seamus Gallagher of the Drumkeerin Community Festival which concludes this weekend. Órla also checks in with Justin Farrell of Carrick Cineplex about their new releases this week.
As festival season comes to a close we're rounding up the last of the major festivals of the summer with Ballinamore, Drumkeerin and the Lough Rynn Harvest Festivals. David McCabe joins us to talk about the closing weekend of the Ballinamore festival where Robert Mizzell, Johnny Brady and Lee Matthews will be entertaining the crowds in their open air concert from the festival platform in the town. There's plenty to keep all ages entertained across Ballinamore with tonnes of sports, activities and events lined up. Seamus Gallagher is back to let us know what's happening in Drumkeerin with Derek Ryan, Michael English, Seamus O'Rourke, a fashion show and magicians and hypnotists to entertain the crowds over the next ten days. John McGuinness joins us to chat about the upcoming Lough Rynn Harvest and Vintage Festival in the grounds of Lough Rynn Castle Hotel on the 25th August. Johnny Brady will be back in the county again to close the day along with vintage cars, games and activities to entertain visitors of all ages. Taking place in the beautiful gardens and grounds of Lough Rynn it's reason enough to come along on the day. Breifne also takes a look at the events in The Dock, The Glens Centre, Carrick Cinema's new releases and what's available in sport this weekend too.
Hello and welcome to Front End Chatter and the 95th outing for Britain’s most stubbornly random motorcycling podcast, suspended as ever between the 48mm upsidedowners of bikesocial.co.uk – the world of motorcycling in a webby nutshell – and the fully adjustable monoshock of Bennetts, the bike insurance experts. And what a weird podcast we have this week, as two – well, one – of Britain’s funniest, smartest, sassiest and damn amazing moto journalists – that’s him, Martin Fitz-Gibbons, with me, Simon Hargreaves – discuss subjects as widely disparate as: • how MotoGP from Mugello (remember that?) was won by a man who used to race an EXUP who did what at the wettest TT ever, including how Peter Hickman used an S1000RR engine he didn’t use, why it was a hybrid bike but not a hybrid engine, and why Harrison, not Dunlop, won the Dunlop Senior, on Metzelers, not Dunlops why John McGuinness might want to check the details of his Norton pension plan why FEC probably holds the lap record for the North Coast 500 the practical and psychological merits of air-bag suits is it a risk buying a new bike in the first year of production? does wearing hi-viz make you a fluoracist? why oh why isn’t there a magazine website with videos and stories and everything (like, er, bikesocial.co.uk, maybe)? are any skills learned off road transferrable to road riding? is the polite biker nod a dying habit, and should you wave at other riders anyway? are racers made on the roads they grow up riding on? Thank you so much or listening, we really appreciate it – and please email your thoughts, ideas, questions and stories of helmet paint scheme inspired accusations to anything@frontendchatter.com Follow @Bennetts on Twitter and Insta and Facebook Follow @Mufga and @SimonHBikes on Twitter/Insta etc Laters taters.
We look ahead to the Isle of Man Youth and Junior Cycle Tour, hear from the race director of the Parish Walk, discuss the three Hospital Cup quarter-final ties taking place on Saturday, and there's an in-depth interview with TT legend John McGuinness
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has been “fatally undermined” by the actions of former members, a Labour Party senator has claimed Louth based Senator Ged Nash, who is a former PAC member, said the Angela Kerins Supreme Court ruling raised serious questions about TDs “playing the man rather than ball” during committee hearings. Mr Nash said ex-PAC members John McGuinness, Mary Lou McDonald and Shane Ross would have to “account for their actions” in the wake of the ruling in favour of the former Rehab chief executive. “The actions of Mary Lou McDonald and the actions of Shane Ross have potentially fatally undermined the public accounts committee,” Mr Nash told Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast. “This really puts a question mark over the future operation of the Public Accounts Committee and other committees as well,” he added Mr Nash said he raised his “unease” about the committee's investigation into Rehab at the time of the hearings in 2014. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court signalled its intention to issue a declaration which will say the PAC acted “unlawfully” in its questioning of Ms Kerins. A final ruling will be made the court in April when the court will decide if the former charity boss is entitled to damages. Ms Kerins previously told the courts she tried to take her own life after she was grilled by the PAC over her €240,000 salary.
Politics, as the saying goes, is showbiz for ugly people. The cheap-shot aside, there is a perception that more and more we are represented by TD's and Ministers who are more the product of media training than political nous. Our guest, Fianna Fail TD for Carlow/Kilkenny, John McGuinness certainly can't be seen in that same bracket. He came into talk about the differences between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, the status of the Confidence and Supply arrangement and the need for real straight talking in politics, instead of spin and PR sound bites. Most importantly, he also has the Affordable Housing and Fair Mortgage Bill 2018 submitted to the Dáil. This, John believes, can be a vital cog in tackling the housing crisis and the imbalances in the financial and legal system that have left so many thousands of people vulnerable to the claws of vulture funds. There's no playing it safe in this conversation. Support our podcasts and get extra insights by joining us at www.patreon.com/tortoiseshack

This week we talk, and talk, and talk. Luckily MOST of it motorcycle related. Welcome to Episode 125 of the Podcast called Creative Riding On this week’s show Chris wanted to keep it under 2 hours. And then talked for over two hours. That’s how we roll here at Creative Riding studios… always going above and beyond our own expectations. And hopefully yours. Segement 1: Open segment. I talk about riding and electronics stores. Chris updates us on Trusty Rusty’s new design. S*** about to get whack, son!! Check out his Instagram for the temporary tank and let your eyeballs cry at the goodness!! I can’t wait to see the permanent tank when it comes back from paint. He’s also going to be up north haunting the RSD Super Hooligans National Championship at the Big Time Speedway, only he’s going to be on the Sac Mile track. I forget how we get there, but we talk about riding in “old age”- meaning barely into your thirties (Don’t tell Simon Ted Simon, Troy Baliss, Preston Petty, or Malcolm Smith that we said that). Actually I think we start by talking about Patreon Supporters and Field_Initiatives_Knives customers. I fast forward a bit to talk about the BrotoGP podcast and Road Racing. Chris has some ideas about why road racing sucks. Segment 2: Real news *Travis Pastrana and Indian S*** all over Robert C Knievel’s accomplishments *We tax bikes so Europe will buy our hormone-ridden beef, they tax our bikes so that we will buy their steel. *Before the GSX250R even has a chance to hit showrooms, Suzuki patents the GSX-R300 *Like the CB1100, the Grom has a retro version- the Monkey 125 (Due in 2019) *MoT safety checks get harder *Isle of Man starts in a couple weeks, and the Supersport class looks awesome. John McGuinness is also going to be a very busy man! *Pike’s Peak IHC starts after IoMTT, and Ducati returns to try and reclaim the title on it’s new Mutistrada 1260 Pikes Peak model. Segement 3: Wisconsin is on the phone! Let’s hear about some racing! I could even race! Who should we be looking for? Who is going to win this year? Segment 4: Ask Wiggz!! Send your questions to askwiggz@gmail.com Wiggins doesn’t tell us who it’s from, and I was too wasted ask. Segment 5: Wisconsin… is that you AGAIN?! This time you’ll hear about a great group bike build and race coming up tomorrow (5/19/18). Segment 6: Wiggins and I are still talking! Not hard to believe. I wanted to talk about the “What If” of the motorcycle industry. My idea to revive the industry is to sell bikes every-other year. Look at some of the Hondas (Grom, Shadow line, etc.) Also the Yamaha FJRs and some of the Suzukis that skip a year or two(think about our “10 year bikes” conversation). OEMs would only have to make bikes for 5 years, but would be able to sell them for 10! Also, updates and upgrades would be easier to implement when you already have scheduled production breaks built into your lead time. Send your stories to slam@creative-riding.com … you could win prizes! Patreon supporters at $5 and above are automatically entered for a chance to win! Have a great day! Hello and welcome to a special, John McGuinness Front End Chatter Episode 64, supported by our good friends at www.bikesocial.co.uk, supported by Bennetts, the bike insurer par excellence, bar none. And what a treat this week – apart from the usual nattering about subjects as random as: tech details from the launch of Ducati’s 210bhp V4 Stradale engine, which is coming to a chassis that may or may not but probably will look remarkably similar to a 1299 Panigale this November Rossi’s broken leg bones, Cal’s severed tendon, the ramifications for the MotoGP title, and who Valentino gets to sign the plaster cast... why Silverstone’s MotoGP was so poorly attended (conspiracy theory alert) how lovely BMW’s R nineT Racer is, and why don’t other manufacturers make bikes that, simply, look beautiful? will the news Welsh police are actively encouraging dash-cam users to upload footage as evidence for traffic offences make you ride any differently? how to learn how to pronounce Ikea, Abba and Öhlins on a Magic Motor Experience tour on a Yamaha XT660R, in Sweden... ... the jewel in FEC64’s crown is the audio version of BikeSocial’s interview with TT legend John McGuinness, in which he talks about: the physical side effects of ‘that’ crash (caution: not for the squeamish!) how it’s affected his head what caused it and what he really thinks about the 2017 FireBlade what happens to his career now how important the race fans are to his recovery Hope you enjoy, please say nice things and spread the word, and please email any and all questions, comments and ideas to anything@frontendchatter.com Thanks for listening! @SimonHbikes @Mufga
Hello and welcome to Front End Chatter Episode 58, supported by www.bikesocial.co.uk and sponsored by Bennetts – and a very special, fully employed episode it is too; featuring, as it does: 1) Mugello MotoGP goss including Rossi’s motocross crash a worrying resemblance to a CGI character from Lord Of The Rings a bad case of the shlitz fast Ducatis how to celebrate a win Mattia Pasini’s odd riding controls and his clutchless downshifts Triumph’s Moto2 deal 2) TT goss including – in fact almost entirely – semi-informed speculation about the travails of Honda, the 2017 Fireblade, and riders Guy Martin and John McGuinness – with an attempt to understand the connection between their accidents and the road bike (if there are any) 3) Loads of your emails, on wide-ranging subjects from the health of World Superbike and a few ideas on how to make it better, cheap motorway bikes, Husqvarna Nudas, more best-looking non-sportsbikes, and tons of other chattering. As ever thank you very much for listening, and thank you even more for downloading it from the top folk at Bike Social (that’s still www.bikesocial.co.uk). Hello and welcome to Front End Chatter episode 57, which is really episode 69, powered by the mighty online juggernaut of two-wheeled infotainment that is Bike Social (that's www.bikesocial.co.uk). This time round Martin and Simon chatter in their front-endy style about: Nicky Hayden: the man, the talent, the achievements, the infectious passion, the generosity, the tears at Estoril, the tears at Valencia, the incredible strength of character, the smile. MotoGP from Le Mans, where General Zarco was propelled by patriotism, Lorenzo was stumped by strine, a small fall by Rossi led to a big fall in his championship standing, and Simon got in a huff and turned his telly off before the end of the race and went to spend some time in his log cabin that Danny Kent still hasn't turned up to finish yet. The red-bike, red-flag, red-fireball fest that was World Superbikes from Imola. John McGuinness's crash at the North West 200, what might have caused it, and whether it might have anything to do with the slightly peculiar throttle response on the 2017 road-going Fireblade. By popular demand (no, really), an excessively comprehensive review of the most promising (if hardly imaginatively named) electric road bikes yet. Your emails, including plenty of air expended about the pros and cons of airbag suits, do MotoGP fans like football, does FEC hate WSB… and finally… and finally?… and finally... a forgotten and (questionably) attractive non-sportsbike from Yamaha. As ever thank you very much for listening, and thank you even more for downloading it from the top folk at Bike Social (that’s still www.bikesocial.co.uk). Please email us on anything@frontendchatter.com or get us on that there Twitter using @SimonHbikes and @Mufga

It's been a busy week in politics and there's a lot to get through on today's podcast. First political reporter Sarah Bardon looks back at a shambolic few days on the Government front bench. Dáil watchers concur it has been a shocker from Fine Gael, and especially from Taoiseach Enda Kenny, whose tenure as party leader is measured now in days and weeks, not months and years, says Sarah. Then Alan Kelly of Labour and John McGuinness of Fianna Fáil join us to talk about the treatment of Garda whistleblowers Maurice McCabe and Keith Harrison, and what they want from the tribunal of inquiry that is now to be set up. Deputy Kelly says he wants to "flush out" any members of Government who were briefed by senior Gardaí about allegations against Sgt McCabe, while Deputy McGuinness expresses no faith in the government his own party props up. And finally we take a quick look at the history of tribunals of inquiry in this state with Irish Times legal affairs correspondent Colm Keena. Must they be costly, lengthy and largely ineffective? And should they be televised?
Featuring Ross Brawn and Nick Fry lifting the lid on the success of Brawn GP, TT hero John McGuinness, Alistair Caldwell on 1976, Stirling Moss recalling the Mille Miglia he won with Jenks in 1955, Damon Hill, Stuart Turner, Dick Bennetts on F3 with Mika Häkkinen, and Pat Symonds. The creative industry has an increasingly prominent role in social issues. As a child, I would visit Blackpool, Morecambe and other seaside towns for family holidays. Whilst these towns still have many positives, there has undoubtedly been something missing since the advent of low-cost airlines and cheap access to European countries with better weather. Deco Publique, a local Morecambe creative company producing project commissions and delivering creative festivals are leading by example with the brilliant 'Street Art' project on Morecambe's Victoria Street. The creative regeneration project is utilising artists and designers to carry out a series of large scale works throughout the town centre. I head up to Morecambe Bay to talk to all the people involved about what creativity can bring to counter the loss of tourism and inspire both local people and visitors. Project leaders Deco Publique, Hemingway Design's Wayne Hemingway, 23 time Isle of Man TT winner John McGuinness, local artists and residents join me to discuss.

With both Tony and Steve at the Isle of Man this year, the Paddock Pass Podcast brings you a special show that's all about the 2016 Isle of Man TT, including an exclusive interview with 23-time TT race winner John McGuinness.
Fianna Fáil TDJohn McGuinness and Independent TD Katherine Zappone join Deputy Political Editor Pat Leahy and host Hugh Linehan to discuss the ongoing negotiations to form a government, the 8th Amendment as a sticking point and why the culture of the civil service and Oireachtas will need reforming if we are to have a successful minority government.
I first met McGuinness at the Isle of Man TT in 2011. I was on the island to write a colour piece about the week’s racing and the big characters and John was top of the interview list. Having organised the trip at the last minute the only hire car left on the island was a pink soft-top Nissan Micra. I decided to take my ‘bike helmet and hitch lifts. It was because of a particularly mad Frenchman – who had given me a lift from my campsite to the paddock that morning on his (very fast) BMW tourer – that I knocked on John’s motorhome door with slightly shaky hands. John opened the door, invited me in and offered me a ‘cuppa’. Being relatively new to road racing it seemed odd that one of its most successful counterparts was happy to be making tea. Formula 1 this was not. What followed was a fascinating 45 minutes chatting about the TT course and what makes it so special. By the end of it I had to keep reminding myself who McGuinness was such was his normality. To be fair, most road racers I have met are... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
