I am hoping to have him on again for a prequel of sorts. In our conversation today we discussed different body therapeutic modalities, the nature of Andrew's practice, the importance of presence and mindfulness, the concept of safety in bodywork and massage, personal growth and self-awareness, and the concept of open-mindedness. We are in an anxious age. By some estimates, a third of all Americans will struggle with anxiety in their lives, and nearly 20% currently suffer from an anxiety disorder. For those suffering the mental distortions of anxiety, life can be difficult, and hope elusive. And for many Christians who have tried and failed to stop their slide into fear and worry by simply “laying down their burdens,” they may feel an added sense of spiritual failure as well. We're joined on our podcast by psychiatrist Curt Thopmson and theologian Curtis Chang who help us explore a counterintuitive approach to understanding our anxiety:I believe the Bible and Jesus's own life invites us to treat [anxiety] not as a problem to make go away, but precisely as a signal. A signal, an invitation, what I call an opportunity, an invitation to walk through anxiety, to actually experience it in the way that actually we were designed to by God for spiritual growth in Jesus, where we actually meet Jesus more deeply, precisely in our anxiety. It's not that we have to make anxiety go away, and then finally, then we're like qualified to somehow be with Jesus. It's that actually in our experience of anxiety, that's where we encounter Jesus most deeply and encounter the truths about ourselves most deeply. This podcast is an edited version of an online conversation recorded in 2023. My guest this week is Curtis Chang, a theologian, consulting faculty member at Duke Divinity School and a Senior Fellow at Fuller Theological Seminary. His ministry experience includes serving as a senior pastor of an Evangelical Covenant Church in California, a campus minister with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and engaging in racial reconciliation work in Soweto, South Africa. Curtis is the founding Executive Director of Redeeming Babel, a nonprofit that helps Christians engage the wider world. He also hosts the Good Faith podcast where he discusses how Christian faith intersects with culture, law, and politics. His latest book, The Anxiety Opportunity: How Worry Is the Doorway to Your Best Self, was released in May. 3:26 – Curtis 101 Curtis has always stood at the intersection between the world of secular institutions and work and Christian faith. He wrote a book about anxiety because it is a pervasive pandemic, and Christianity has something to say about it. 7:49 – Shame of anxiety In the Christian faith, there's a tremendous amount of shame around anxiety. Some see it as a flaw, lack of faith or sin. Curtis has suffered from anxiety for his much of his life. He once had a catastrophic breakdown and had trouble sleeping. Anxiety is the most profound opportunity for spiritual growth we may have. 12:44 – Anxiety spectrum We all exist somewhere on the anxiety spectrum. There's a difference between anxiety and anxiety disorder. Anxiety is the fear of loss. An anxiety disorder is when our response to anxiety is dysfunctional and unhealthy. 19:38 – Avoiding the unavoidable Many Christians fall into the trap of thinking that bad things won't happen to them because they are believers. But Christians experience loss, too. God did not let you down if you experience a loss. You can't avoid the unavoidable. 23:43 – How to handle loss The real promise of the gospel is not loss avoidance, but loss restoration. You have to go through loss to get to future restoration. 25:22 – Anxious children Your kid's anxiety can make you anxious. Curtis has two daughters. He has tried to jump in and make their anxiety go away. But that makes them more anxious. Instead, he holds their loss and empathizes with them. 35:40 – Anxiety and politics Why talk about anxiety and politics? Because you can't respond to what's happening with politics without acknowledging the pervasive anxiety around it. Politics can be a toxic drug. 48:32 – Advice about anxiety If you want to lessen anxiety, get curious about what you're feeling and experiencing. FEATURED QUOTES The best way to understand me is, I'm someone who has always stood at the intersection between the world of secular institutions and work and the Christian faith. There is a pervasive and growing pandemic – and it is a mental health pandemic – of anxiety. The Christian faith has something really helpful to say. There's a tremendous amount of shame around anxiety. I write as somebody who knows of the painful reality of anxiety. Anxiety is actually the most profound opportunity for spiritual growth we may have. https://redeemingbabel.org/ https://www.amazon.com/Anxiety-Opportunity-Worry-Doorway-Your/dp/031036728X

Anxiety is having a moment. Compared to prepandemic rates, for example, anxiety has doubled in young people. The increase feels daunting and downright scary at times as Christians struggle to determine how to help. Enter Curtis Chang, theologian, consulting faculty member at Duke Divinity School, and senior fellow at Fuller Theological Seminary. Cohost of the Good Faith podcast, executive director of Redeeming Babel, and cofounder of The After Party with Moore and David French, Chang is also an author. His new book, The Anxiety Opportunity: How Worry Is the Doorway to Your Best Self, invites readers to under anxiety as a doorway to spiritual transformation rather than a sin to overcome. On this episode of The Russell Moore Show, Chang explains that the root of anxiety is the fear of loss. He and Moore discuss their personal experiences with anxiety and the importance of paying attention to the signals our bodies send us when under stress. They talk about shame, the biblical passages that address worry, and how Jesus related to people who faced anxiety. Their conversation also covers social media, the role of medication in addressing mental health struggles, and various spiritual practices for responding to anxiety. Finally, Chang and Moore introduce their new project, The After Party, which calls Christians toward their higher allegiance to Jesus, transcending partisan loyalty—and partisan anxieties. Curtis Chang joins Dr. Mark Turman to talk about his book, The Anxiety Opportunity, how anxiety affected Chang's life, why anxiety is not a sin but a chance for spiritual growth, how anxiety reflects a fear of loss, and how Jesus speaks into our worries. Show notes: Curtis Chang begins by sharing a deeply personal story about struggling with his anxiety disorder as a senior pastor and how God helped him see anxiety as an opportunity for spiritual growth (3:04). Chang explains how some level of anxiety is natural and why we can't just “pray it away” (8:04). They discuss how anxiety is the fear of future loss, and this should prompt us to ask: what are we afraid of losing (20:10)? Chang gives practical ways to overcome the symptoms of anxiety while warning that we must also address the deeper heart issues, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit (29:31). They consider the danger of avoiding loss at all costs, remembering that we will lose everything on this earth at some point, and how loss avoidance can end in a false version of the gospel (38:46). They close by talking about the importance of community to deal with anxiety, taking it first to God and then to others who love us (54:10). Curtis Chang, the regular host of the Good Faith podcast, takes a turn in the “guest seat” in this special episode in which Nancy French interviews him about his new book, The Anxiety Opportunity: How Worry Is the Doorway to Your Best Self. Curtis, who has suffered from anxiety to the point of losing his job as a senior pastor, offers up hard-earned wisdom that could transform one's view on parenting, relationships, and even politics. Curtis also talks about the way the church gets anxiety wrong, how Jesus dealt with anxious people, and how grieving is a necessary component of effectively walking through loss.
“The fundamental question that anxiety poses [to] us is: What is our relationship to suffering?” notes this week's podcast guest, author, theologian, and fellow sufferer of chronic anxiety, Curtis Chang. His new book, "The Anxiety Opportunity,” offers a fresh perspective on anxiety as a doorway to spiritual transformation. He challenges the idea that anxiety is an enemy to be defeated – instead presenting it as a path towards personal growth and a deeper connection with Jesus. Curtis points out, “There's an invitation to redemption and that our best self found in Jesus is only found to the extent that we can go through our pain, including our pain of anxiety.” If you're ready to think differently about the relationship between anxiety and spiritual growth, we invite you to listen to today's conversation with Curtis Chang, then pick up your copy of “The Anxiety Opportunity: How Worry Is the Doorway to Your Best Self,” out this week anywhere books are sold.
