Our Serious Crime Review Team, often referred to as the Cold Case Unit is tasked with reviewing historical cases, many of them high profile, such as the case of Jo Jo Dullard, Sophie Toscan du Plantier and a recent review in to the Stardust tragedy. In this episode, Detective Superintendent Des McTiernan takes us behind the scenes of this highly specialised and experienced team who are determined to get justice for victims and their families.
This week, Stephen and Dana are joined by long-time friend of the pod and co-host of Slate's Working podcast, June Thomas. The panel begins by puzzling over the return of Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice, the actor-director's third Agatha Christie whodunit adaptation. Then, they dig into Jann Wenner's disastrous New York Times interview with David Marchese in which the Rolling Stone co-founder manages to disgrace himself in almost every conceivable way. Finally, the trio concludes by discussing Naomi Klein's new book, Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World, which captures the strange ways selfhood is performed in the internet age. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel reveals their cleaning playlists and audio accompaniments, inspired by Lindsay Zoladz' essay for The New York Times, “A 20-Minute Cleaning Playlist.” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Just two days before Christmas in 1996 the body of 39 year old, french filmmaker, wife, daughter and mother Sophie Toscan Du Plantier was found not far from her vacation home. Her cottage in Schull was supposed to be her happy getaway, but would soon turn into an absolute nightmare. This was a classic tale of a tight knit community that was absolutely shocked, terrified and deeply saddened by this heinous crime. Unfortunately the investigation was a shaky one which led to two countries and families arguing back and forth. In the end, even though someone was convicted, there were still doubts and no one has been put behind bars to serve a sentence for Sophie's murder.
