Maguire's new novel, ELPHIE chronicles the formative years of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, unveiling her intriguing past and setting the stage for the global phenomenon that is Wicked. It touches upon her early encounters with the marginalized Animal populations of Oz, her struggles with familial jealousy, and her educational adventures leading to Shiz University where she meets the charismatic Galinda. Elphaba and the themes that Maguire presented in his groundbreaking work of fiction have only become more relevant in today's divided world. Acclaimed by critics and readers alike, Wicked has sold over 6 million copies and inspired the Tony Award-winning musical that has become one of Broadway's most successful shows. Craig and Myriam Belzile-Maguire, Founder and Designer at Maguire Shoes, discuss the remarkable growth the Montreal-based footwear brand she founded. Known for its direct-to-consumer model, the brand offers high-quality shoes at affordable prices by cutting out traditional wholesale markups. Myriam shares how her experience as a designer inspired the creation of a mid-range price point in leather footwear that bridges the gap between budget and luxury. Maguire's unique business approach has been instrumental in its success, allowing the brand to maintain fair pricing while delivering exceptional quality. Maguire Shoes has expanded significantly since its inception, starting with a small Montreal shop and growing to include locations in Toronto, New York, and soon, Brooklyn. Myriam explains the strategic importance of being in trend-driven neighborhoods with vibrant local life, such as Nolita in Manhattan, to enhance visibility and attract fashion-savvy customers. Physical stores have also positively impacted online sales, with half of the brand's revenue now generated through e-commerce. Beyond footwear, Maguire has diversified its product line to include accessories such as gloves and jewelry, inspired by collaborations with trusted manufacturers. As the brand continues to explore new markets and refine its offerings, Myriam hints at potential future ventures, including a possible expansion into men's footwear. Despite rapid growth, Maguire Shoes remains committed to its Canadian roots, ensuring competitive pricing for local customers while capturing global attention through innovative designs and strategic retail placement. Kieran Maguire is the go-to voice when it comes to football finance — whether it's untangling FFP, breaking down club accounts, or explaining how teams like Chelsea can keep spending without (apparently) breaking the rules. He's a lecturer in football finance at the University of Liverpool, co-host of the Price of Football podcast, and author of the book by the same name. If you've ever seen a financial headline in football and thought, “What does that actually mean?”, chances are Kieran's already explained it better than anyone else. With Daniel Levy recently publishing Tottenham's latest financial results — including a dip in revenue, a collapse in UEFA prize money, and ongoing commercial growth — we thought it was the perfect time to dig into the numbers and ask what it all means for Spurs moving forward. Myriam Belzile-Maguire is the Founder and Designer at Maguire Shoes, an independent fashion footwear and accessories brand based in Montreal, Canada. Co-owned by Myriam and her sister, Romy, the award-winning brand has built a strategic presence in digital and physical marketplaces. Under Myriam's leadership, Maguire Shoes operates boutiques in Montreal, Toronto, and New York and was honored with the Emerging Talent Award in Accessories at the 2022 Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards. Before founding Maguire, Myriam designed for dozens of renowned brands, such as Opening Ceremony, and held creative positions at United Colors of Benetton in Italy and Aldo Group in Montreal. In this episode… Expanding an ecommerce brand can be challenging, especially when online sales plateau and customer acquisition costs rise. Many brands struggle to find ways to scale beyond digital advertising and wonder if brick-and-mortar stores are worth the investment. How can physical retail locations drive online growth instead of competing with it? With experience growing a thriving fashion brand, Myriam Belzile-Maguire has navigated the challenges of blending retail and ecommerce to fuel her brand's expansion. Initially starting with a Shopify website, Myriam realized that participating in local markets and opening physical stores significantly boosted online traffic and sales. The strategy involved a mix of pop-up events and permanent retail locations, allowing customers to experience the brand first-hand, which in turn drove them to shop online. Myriam demonstrates how creating a seamless customer experience across all channels, engaging local communities, and using data-driven strategies like using pop-ups to test new markets can boost online conversions. In this episode of Minds of Ecommerce, Raphael Paulin-Daigle interviews Myriam Belzile-Maguire, Founder and Designer at Maguire Shoes, about how retail stores can supercharge ecommerce growth. Myriam discusses the balance between physical and digital sales channels, the strategy behind pop-up shops, and her unique "wardrobe system" that converts in-store visitors into repeat online customers. Tune in to discover how strategic retail moves can elevate your brand's online presence.
Today, Hunter spoke with Lisa Maguire and Harpreet Samra of the San Mateo County Private Defender Program. Unlike the normal contract Public Defender model, the PDP operates as a managed assigned counsel system. As the Chief Defender, Lisa, manages a group of private contractors who handle the Public Defender needs of the county. This grants here significantly more oversight than in a traditional Private Defender System. Harpreet is the lead for the PDP's Social Worker program, and she ensures attorneys connect with Social Workers in their cases. From each of their areas of expertise, Lisa and Harpreet are working to correct the issues documented with PDP over the years. While their work has the PDP moving in a positive direction, the presence of flat rate fee compensation and the fall out from a series of insulting, racist emails sent by former PDP members leave Lisa and Harpreet with an ongoing battle to earn the trust back of the community they serve. It's time for The Truth!Dougie's back in business with Sam after a well-earned week off and it's a return with a bang as we turn our attention to Manchester United - always a behemoth of a topic, who are currently seemingly locked inside a battle with themselves. After a dreary start to 2025, questions are being asked of Ruben Amorim's stewardship, and if United have actually got worse since he took over. Now, to be fair, Amorim himself said when he took the job that things were going to get worse before they got better, but much of the fanbase was expecting more of an uptick in form five months in than what we've seen on the pitch, especially after defeat to Fulham in the FA Cup wiped out one of the two remaining options that United had for silverware this campaign. But is that criticism fair? Amorim has struggled to get this squad ticking, but there are mitigating factors - the players are taking some time to adapt to his system (those that can), whilst the most impactful players in this squad have been struck down by injuries just as things were taking an upturn for them. Is that enough though, to absolve him of fault? Should United ride out this storm, trust in their new manager and try to build something long term? Or have we already seen enough to suggest that this isn't going to work and that a change is needed before United get bogged down in another cycle not going anywhere? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Comedian Milo Edwards joins Gráinne Maguire and Chantal Feduchin-Pate for a deep dive into France's most effortlessly cool couple: Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin. A whirlwind romance of cigarette smoke, black paint, and an unfortunate incident with a ruler, their love defined an era—though, like a well-worn Birkin bag, it didn't stay pristine forever. Luckily, Gráinne Maguire and Chantal Feduchin-Pate had microphones set up and ready for the occasion. This week, we're going to mention it all: the magazines, the teeth, the dinner party from hell, and of course Morgan Wade. So, what really made Mo say, "Goodbye Kyle"? The r-word has been put to bed after Bruno Fernandes delivered three more set-piece goals (via Morsy, De Ligt, and Maguire), but there was no shortage of drama at Old Trafford on Wednesday night with Andre Onana setting hearts racing again and Patrick Dorgu dismissed on his first home start. Fighting spirit on the pitch, then, but surely a sombre mood among Manchester United's staff after they were informed of more job cuts by Omar Berrada. We briefly break down the main points with a TotD Extra on executive strategy coming up next week. Fulham are better than Ipswich, it's fair to say, and they will pose a real threat to progress in the FA Cup. Can this competition provide the boost, and the route to Europe, that it did last season? #794 | United fought back to earn a draw at Everton. It was a spirited end to the game after more than an hour of some of the worst football played by a United team in living memory. There's quite a long list in that department. Ed and Dan wonder why Ruben Amorim waited until the 70th minute to make any substitutions? And why United couldn't muster a shot on target until a couple of minutes later? And whether it'll ever get any better? 00:00 Introduction00:45 Bruno Fernandes: The Lifeline02:25 Defensive Woes and Maguire's Struggles07:05 Goalkeeping Concerns10:42 Offensive Issues and Team Dynamics17:23 Managerial Decisions29:37 Europa League Hopes31:34 Controversial Penalty Decision33:30 Transfers and Player Performance34:29 Relegation Battle38:27 Youth Players and Team Dynamics45:57 Financial Challenges and Player Sales56:11 ClosingIf you are interested in supporting the show and accessing exclusive bonus episodes, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. One day, several decades ago, the writer Winnie Holzman was shopping in a Manhattan bookstore where a particular cover caught her eye. It showed a woman with a green face, a black hat pulled down over her eyes. The book was “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire, a retelling of L. Frank Baum's “Oz” stories from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. “When I turned it over and read the little précis on the back, it blew my mind,” Holzman said. “I thought it was such a brilliant premise.” The book ended up on Holzman's bookshelf, with its enigmatic cover facing out.Years later, the composer Stephen Schwartz contacted Holzman to ask if she'd be interested in adapting Maguire's book for the stage. The musical they wrote together opened in 2003, and it is now one of the most successful shows in Broadway history. The producers started talking about a movie adaptation, but Holzman was cautious: “We had to really kind of clear our minds and kind of reconceive the whole story.”The film version of “Wicked” opened in 2024, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and with a screenplay by Holzman and Dana Fox. It is one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and is nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.Winnie Holzman joins Gilbert Cruz, the editor of the Book Review, to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of adapting your own adaptation.
