Your child's data profile doesn't start when they get their first phone. It starts before they're born, the moment a parent emails a gynecologist or visits a fertility clinic website. That's the core argument behind Born Private, Proton's new initiative that lets parents reserve an email address for their child at birth, anchoring their digital identity in a privacy-preserving ecosystem before the profiling machine gets started. Craig Smith sits down with Eamonn Maguire, Engineering Director, Machine Learning & AI at Proton, who has spent his career at the intersection of data, security, and visualization to explore what's really happening to our data and what, if anything, we can do about it. The conversation covers the mechanics of how just three email sign-ups can allow Google to infer your age, politics, and religion; why OpenAI and Anthropic have shown "not much regard for the law" when it comes to training data and copyright; and why social media platforms are operating like unregulated gambling companies - engineering addiction with no structural incentive to stop. It's one of the most grounded, specific, and genuinely alarming conversations about digital privacy you'll hear, and it ends with a simple, actionable proposition: privacy should be a decision you make at birth, not a problem you try to solve after the damage is done. Subscribe to Eye on A.I. for weekly conversations with the people building and deploying the future of AI.

The mailbag is pretty active in this podcast, with listeners chiming in with questions about how Concordia (Wis.) will do in transitioning from the NACC to the CCIW, whether this year’s new technology in Division III will be added more smoothly than last year, what Trinity (Texas) was leaving behind in leaving its long-time conference home, and which mascot matchup would be our favorite. We’ll also talk about the new quarterback transferring into UW-Oshkosh, and finally get Coe and UW-Oshkosh schedules finalized. Plus, we have two guests: Trinity (Conn.) head coach Jeff Devanney and Ithaca coach Brandon Maguire. At Trinity, the day we’ve all been waiting for is arriving, where the NESCAC is finally allowed to go to the playoffs. The Bantams are all smiles. If you missed it, the conference presidents have been holding NESCAC football teams back for about 30 years while all other sports have been permitted to play on past Week 11. Devanney talks about how that changes the recruiting pitch, both for incoming student-athletes and a handful of key players who have an extra year of eligibility to be used. At Ithaca, Maguire gets promoted from within and talks about how many of the 96 players on the roster they managed to get to stick around after the previous coach left right before Christmas. Why did they players who stayed, stay? What does Ithaca need to get back to the very top of the Liberty League standings and get to the playoffs? What are the Bomber alumni most concerned about? Just a few months after the birth of his son in 2019, Kevin Maguire noticed he wasn't feeling quite right. At times he resented his newborn son, other times he would cry for seemingly no reason. He lost interest in his work and some of his hobbies, and he just couldn't quite shake this idea that maybe something was wrong with him. After all, wasn't this supposed to be one the happiest moments of his life? Then Maguire discovered he was suffering from paternal postpartum depression, and the diagnosis sent him down a path that changed his life. Two years later he launched The New Fatherhood, a hugely popular international forum for men that Esquire dubbed "one big group text with other guys fumbling their way through fatherhood." Beginning with one email to friends that began with the line "being a dad isn't easy," The New Fatherhood now boasts a weekly newsletter read by nearly 20,000 dads in more than 150 countries. On this episode of Paternal, Maguire discusses founding the forum, the kinds of vulnerable reactions he's received from dads over the years, and why we live in an era with the biggest changes facing fathers in generations. Maguire's new book, The New Fatherhood, is available wherever you buy books.

#998 | Ed and Daniel discuss Manchester United's win over Brentford at Old Trafford, leaving United on the brink of Champions League qualification. That's Michael Carrick's 10th win in 13 games as interim manager. It was another strong set of performances from Lammens, Maguire, and Heaven at the back and plenty of quality from Mainoo and Casemiro in midfield as well. With Champions League almost secure, the conversation turns to summer needs - especially the need for two elite midfielders plus fullback/wing depth. And is the squad ready for a 55–60 game season? What if your child already has a data profile, and they haven't even been born yet? In this episode of Eye on AI, Craig Smith sits down with Eamonn Maguire, Director of Engineering for AI and ML at Proton, to explore one of the most urgent and underappreciated questions in the age of AI: who owns your data, who is building a profile on you, and what can actually be done about it? Eamonn brings a rare combination of depth and range to this conversation. With a PhD from Oxford, a postdoc at CERN, and years at Facebook engineering ML systems to detect internal and external threats, he now leads Proton's AI efforts, including Lumo, their end-to-end encrypted alternative to ChatGPT. He makes a compelling case that the surveillance economy is not just a privacy problem but a behavioral one, where the systems profiling you are not only observing who you are but actively shaping who you become. We get into how just three data points are enough for advertisers to infer your age, political leanings, religion, and spending habits. We discuss why trusting mainstream AI platforms with sensitive data is a structural problem, not just a policy one, and why the AI labs with the best models got there by acquiring the most data, often with little regard for copyright law. Eamonn also breaks down the difference between truly open models and open washing, and explains how Proton builds AI that is genuinely private by design, with local indexing, encrypted memory, and user-controlled data sharing. Then there is Born Private, Proton's initiative to give children a private digital identity from birth. It sounds simple on the surface, but the conversation it opens up is anything but. Data collection on your child begins before they are born, the moment a parent emails a gynecologist or a fertility clinic. Eamonn argues that until we start thinking about privacy the way we think about other rights, from the very beginning, the surveillance machine will always have a head start. #996 | Ten points clear of Chelsea with five games left. A gritty, utterly necessary win at Stamford Bridge. United's return to the Champions League is no longer a question of whether, but when. Dan and Dharnish unpack all you need to know. With Martínez and Maguire suspended, Carrick turned to an Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui as the centre-back pairing. In front of them, Kobbie Mainoo delivered the standout performance of the afternoon alongside Casemiro, whose is giving us quite the farewell tour Carrick has imposed a more compact press and restored a mentality that had gone missing. Control in games remains the next hurdle, but the case for giving him the job permanently, barring a genuinely elite alternative, is getting harder to argue against. There's also plenty to think about in the summer - United's imperfect front three, Amad's end-product problem, and the summer recruitment required across defence, midfield and on the wing. This time on TYP, I chat with Jessica Maguire - Physiotherapist, Speaker, and best-selling Author of "The Nervous System Reset." We explore what it actually means to "regulate your nervous system", not as a buzzword, but as a practical, trainable skill that shapes how you think, feel, and function. Jessica shares how early experiences - even from the womb — can influence our nervous system wiring, why two people can live through the same event but have completely different internal reactions, and how much of our suffering comes not from what happens... but the story we attach to it. We unpack interoception (your ability to sense what's happening inside your body), neuroplasticity, and how change is not only possible - it's biological. There's also a powerful and deeply human conversation around grief, loss, and trauma, as Jessica shares how personal tragedy reshaped her life and work - and how learning to work with the body, not just the mind, became her path forward. This is a conversation about becoming calm in the chaos... not by controlling the world, but by understanding your nervous system. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From NQAT Extra. Rebroadcasting for everyone given that Harry Maguire has signed a new contract and Mainoo's new deal is very close! --- Ed and Dominic discuss reports that Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo are close to signing new contracts. It's an important step both for squad depth ahead of likely European football and a heavier schedule, and in retaining key local talent. Maguire will stay on a shorter, lower-value deal - a sensible move given injuries across United's centre-backs, his reliability, experience, and suitability as a squad option. For Mainoo, his low wages are an issue, as is his strong leverage due to United's thin midfield and planned departures. The club needs to fix its wage structure while keeping a key academy figure. More broadly, United's financial and squad-building strategy under Ratcliffe and concerns about readiness for a 60-game season are discussed. 00:00 Introduction 00:55 Harry Maguire's New Contract 01:46 Maguire's Character 04:38 The 2019 Transfer Market Context 06:15 Maguire Under Different Managers 12:45 Kobbie Mainoo's Contract Situation 20:08 United's Financial Strategy 28:46 Looking Ahead If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. What does it mean to flourish as leaders and cultures? Jason Barger is joined by the Founders of Safarini Leadership in dialogue about lessons from tribal elders. Jason is joined by Boris Maguire and Oli Raison, founders of Safarini Leadership, for a fascinating conversation on how indigenous wisdom from Northern Kenya can transform modern executive leadership. Please rate and review the podcast to help amplify these messages to others! Summary: In an era of hyper-connectivity but profound human disconnection, what can global executives learn from the nomadic Samburu tribe? In this episode of The Thermostat, Jason V. Barger connects with Boris Maguire and Oli Raison to explore the Safarini Leadership Project. By guiding leaders on foot through Africa's remote landscapes, Boris and Oli facilitate an intersection between modern corporate strategy and ancient tribal wisdom. https://safarinileadership.com/ The conversation centers on Naboisho—the Samburu concept of "coming together"—and how it serves as a blueprint for resilience and corporate culture. They address the "culture of narcissism" in Western leadership and offer a radical alternative: a model where leadership in teams is a collective act of service rather than a quest for personal power. From "eternal accountability" to the "lazy tree of wisdom," this episode challenges the standard metrics of success and redefines what it means for a leader to truly flourish. Essential listening for C-Suite executives, founders, and people leaders, this episode offers a cross-cultural perspective on generational collaboration, the strategic value of self-awareness, and the necessity of purpose-driven connection in the 2026 workplace. Episode Notes & Timestamps: [00:00] Intro: Jason introduces the Safarini Leadership Project and the concept of "breathing good oxygen" into global leadership. [00:02] Meet Boris & Oli: The founders share their journey from tech and energy sectors to leading transformational treks in Northern Kenya. [00:07] The Philosophy of Naboisho: Oli explains the Samburu belief of "we are because they are" and how communal resilience is built in the world's harshest climates. [00:11] The Flourishing Study: Boris connects Safarini's work to the Global Human Flourishing Study, emphasizing why purpose and human connection are core business strategies. [00:15] The Autonomy-Connection Balance: A look at how modern society has prioritized independence at the cost of the connections that allow leaders to thrive. [00:20] The Age Set System: A deep dive into Samburu social structure. How they handle generational transitions and mentorship without the friction often found in Western organizations. [00:24] Consistency of Values: Boris discusses how ritualized investment in the next generation ensures a cultural torch is passed on without losing its flame. [00:28] Eternal Accountability: A powerful story of a debt repaid 70 years later, illustrating how the "E.A.T." (Empathy, Accountability, Trust) framework works in an oral culture. [00:34] The Lazy Tree of Wisdom: Oli explains the Samburu approach to time and why prioritizing harmony over speed leads to more sustainable decision-making. [00:42] The 30% Engagement Boost: Boris cites data on how self-aware leaders drive higher profit and why immersion in a "radically different" culture is the ultimate teacher. Key Takeaways for Leaders: Collective Leadership: Shift from the "CEO as hero" model to a participatory culture where leadership is an act of service for the whole. Time Awareness: Reframe time not just as a commodity to be spent, but as an experience to be shared, allowing for deeper listening and consensus. Radical Immersion: Understand that true self-awareness often requires stepping completely out of your home culture to see your own leadership "thermostat" clearly. What if your anxiety, overwhelm, or shutdown isn't a mindset problem… but a nervous system response your body learned years ago? In this episode, Cait sits down with nervous system educator and practitioner trainer Jessica McGuire to unpack what nervous system regulation actually means beyond social media buzzwords and surface-level self-care. If you've ever felt stuck in fight-or-flight, overwhelmed by motherhood and ambition, or frustrated that mindset work hasn't fully "worked," this conversation will shift everything.
