#1037 | United trailed to Ipswich for a moment, but a hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire's deflected effort and a Bryan Mbeumo goal turned it into a 5-2 win. It was a complete response to the opening-day defeat at Hull. Ed and Dan dig into the bigger picture: how well the Tielemans-Mainoo midfield pairing worked, the ongoing debate over Marcus Rashford's role, and the club's search for a new left-back. The pod closes on the transfer window with two days left: there's scepticism about Villa's reported £40 million interest in Amad and a general sense that United's could have been more ambitious than a net spend that trails Coventry and Ipswich. 0:00 Introduction 1:06 Reacting to United's 5-2 win 5:39 Midfield: Tielemans and Mainoo 14:40 Marcus Rashford's return 17:46 Front three, fullbacks and squad balance 22:58 Defence concerns: Maguire, Martinez, Shaw 25:04 Bruno's hat-trick and Maguire's 'goal' 27:20 Pressure, tactics and pressing 29:28 Transfer market: Amad bid and left-back hunt 39:44 Baleba, Sesko and squad depth 43:22 Net spend and club ambition 44:37 Sign-off If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. #1033 | Ed and Wayne react to United's 2-0 opening-day defeat at Hull. United's poor performance breaks down into three causes: a tactical selection that didn't suit the game, a fitness gap after a staggered pre-season, and basic failure to finish chances or clear the two set pieces Hull scored from. Then there are the players. Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw remain trusted by Carrick but is their time in the team now coming to a natural end? A wider structural problem persists too; every forward likes to tuck inside, leaving nobody offering width except from full-back, which is a problem too. Then there's the tendency, called out by Bruno Fernandes, for United to play vertically when Carrick is building a side for possession. Marcus Rashford, who set up United's best chance off the bench, gets a long section of debate. Ipswich at Old Trafford is up next. 0:00 Introduction: Hull defeat and the overreaction 2:15 Analysing the defeat 7:15 Set pieces and preparation 11:25 System evolution 16:50 Maguire and Shaw 24:30 Individual performances 37:50 Rashford debate 53:45 Looking ahead If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. #1030 | Ed and Wayne are back for the season preview after a mixed pre-season: two wins from six and a 4-2 defeat to Milan in the last match. Neither is panicking about that result specifically, but it exposed problems that were already there. The defence is the biggest concern. Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire remain first choice and neither has the legs for a higher, more front-foot approach, while Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt can't be relied on for fitness. Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro have the potential to solve those problems but it's a big ask for two young players. There's a different problem in midfield: plenty of technical quality in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, not enough physicality to handle the games that get scrappy. United need two more signings before deadline day, a genuine upgrade at left-back and a proper ball-winner in midfield, to have a real shot at matching last season's third-place finish. Without them, expect some regression with a much busier schedule. They finish with a run through the rest of the league: Arsenal have strengthened again, Liverpool are an interesting watch under Iraola with the Bezos ownership question in the background, Spurs have spent big, and nobody fancies predicting what Chelsea will do. 0:00 Six games, one freak-out 1:50 A disjointed pre-season 9:44 Shaw and Maguire: the defensive issue 15:09 Carrick's tactical direction 17:33 Midfield's missing ball-winner 27:28 Lacey: keep or loan? 34:33 Dorgu, Sesko and Zirkzee 40:31 What United need before deadline day 51:17 Rivals: Arsenal 54:07 Rivals: City after Guardiola 1:00:06 Rivals: Liverpool and Iraola's scalability 1:04:04 Bezos, Liverpool and the TV deal 1:11:37 Rivals: Spurs 1:14:23 Rivals: Newcastle 1:15:53 Rivals: Chelsea 1:18:00 Wrap-up If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. In the gripping second part of Gary Jubelin’s conversation with former undercover operative Todd Maguire, the stakes reach a breaking point. Todd delves deeper into the psychological toll of maintaining multiple false identities, where the line between his real self and his undercover personas began to dangerously blur. From terrifying rural setups involving illegal firearms and rust-covered blades to the high-stakes world of city underbelly operations, Todd reveals the raw reality of life in the field. He shares the harrowing moment he truly thought his cover was blown and how a reckless descent into alcohol and substance abuse became his only way to cope with the trauma he couldn't process. Gary and Todd also discuss the profound personal cost of the job, the "tick and flick" approach to officer welfare, and the life-changing wakeup call that finally forced Todd to confront the train wreck his life had become.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A rapidly growing number of agents are turning their back on the stress and expense of running a business and leveraging their experience and skills to make big money by focusing exclusively on listings and sales. In this episode, Ray Wood catches up with respected New Zealand agent, auctioneer and former multi-office owner Wayne Maguire, who has made exactly that move. After building successful Ray White businesses, managing teams and carrying the pressure of overheads, staffing, systems and office costs, Wayne made a deliberate decision to get back to what he does best: winning listings, building relationships, negotiating hard and selling property.Wayne's message is simple: the money is often in selling real estate, not in carrying the risk and responsibility of running multiple offices. He shares how he is rebuilding his personal sales business by combining proven old-school prospecting with modern digital marketing. From consistent letterbox drops and database communication to video, appraisal campaigns and online marketing, Wayne is making sure his local market knows that when they list with him, he is personally involved from the first conversation through to the final negotiation. He also explains why AI is becoming an essential advantage for agents who want to create more leverage, improve their marketing, stay on top of communication and run a more efficient sales business. But Wayne is clear: technology does not replace the skills that matter most. The best agents still ask better questions, listen closely, build trust, understand people and negotiate confidently in the lounge room.In this episode, you will discover:Why business ownership is not always the most profitable path for ambitious agentsHow to rebuild your profile and market awareness when returning to frontline salesThe prospecting methods Wayne still relies on every weekWhy personal involvement creates a powerful point of difference with sellersHow AI can help agents create more leverage without losing the human connectionThe discipline, structure and habits behind sustained sales performanceWhy your face-to-face listing and negotiation skills remain your greatest advantageThis is a must-listen episode for agents who are tired of being buried in admin, team issues, overheads and operational stress—and want to get back to doing the work that creates income, freedom and momentum.Sometimes the smartest move is not to build a bigger business.Sometimes it is to become a better, more focused salesperson.Connect with Wayne at waynemaguire.com

For the final Sunday Supplement of the season, we're joined by Dominic King, Jack Rosser and Carl Anka to reflect on the weekend's sporting action. We begin by discussing Arsenal's Champions League final loss to PSG on penalties, despite taking an early lead through Havertz. While Dominic admits he was surprised by the announcement, he reflects on the subdued atmosphere at Anfield in recent matches as we explore why sporting director Hughes ultimately decided to part ways with Slot. Finally, we look ahead to the World Cup, discussing Thomas Tuchel's plans for East Coast preparation and the logistical challenges of the tournament. Your child's data profile doesn't start when they get their first phone. It starts before they're born, the moment a parent emails a gynecologist or visits a fertility clinic website. That's the core argument behind Born Private, Proton's new initiative that lets parents reserve an email address for their child at birth, anchoring their digital identity in a privacy-preserving ecosystem before the profiling machine gets started. Craig Smith sits down with Eamonn Maguire, Engineering Director, Machine Learning & AI at Proton, who has spent his career at the intersection of data, security, and visualization to explore what's really happening to our data and what, if anything, we can do about it. The conversation covers the mechanics of how just three email sign-ups can allow Google to infer your age, politics, and religion; why OpenAI and Anthropic have shown "not much regard for the law" when it comes to training data and copyright; and why social media platforms are operating like unregulated gambling companies - engineering addiction with no structural incentive to stop. It's one of the most grounded, specific, and genuinely alarming conversations about digital privacy you'll hear, and it ends with a simple, actionable proposition: privacy should be a decision you make at birth, not a problem you try to solve after the damage is done. Subscribe to Eye on A.I. for weekly conversations with the people building and deploying the future of AI.
The mailbag is pretty active in this podcast, with listeners chiming in with questions about how Concordia (Wis.) will do in transitioning from the NACC to the CCIW, whether this year’s new technology in Division III will be added more smoothly than last year, what Trinity (Texas) was leaving behind in leaving its long-time conference home, and which mascot matchup would be our favorite. We’ll also talk about the new quarterback transferring into UW-Oshkosh, and finally get Coe and UW-Oshkosh schedules finalized. Plus, we have two guests: Trinity (Conn.) head coach Jeff Devanney and Ithaca coach Brandon Maguire. At Trinity, the day we’ve all been waiting for is arriving, where the NESCAC is finally allowed to go to the playoffs. The Bantams are all smiles. If you missed it, the conference presidents have been holding NESCAC football teams back for about 30 years while all other sports have been permitted to play on past Week 11. Devanney talks about how that changes the recruiting pitch, both for incoming student-athletes and a handful of key players who have an extra year of eligibility to be used. At Ithaca, Maguire gets promoted from within and talks about how many of the 96 players on the roster they managed to get to stick around after the previous coach left right before Christmas. Why did they players who stayed, stay? What does Ithaca need to get back to the very top of the Liberty League standings and get to the playoffs? What are the Bomber alumni most concerned about? That and more in this conversation. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. Just a few months after the birth of his son in 2019, Kevin Maguire noticed he wasn't feeling quite right. At times he resented his newborn son, other times he would cry for seemingly no reason. He lost interest in his work and some of his hobbies, and he just couldn't quite shake this idea that maybe something was wrong with him. After all, wasn't this supposed to be one the happiest moments of his life? Then Maguire discovered he was suffering from paternal postpartum depression, and the diagnosis sent him down a path that changed his life. Two years later he launched The New Fatherhood, a hugely popular international forum for men that Esquire dubbed "one big group text with other guys fumbling their way through fatherhood." Beginning with one email to friends that began with the line "being a dad isn't easy," The New Fatherhood now boasts a weekly newsletter read by nearly 20,000 dads in more than 150 countries. On this episode of Paternal, Maguire discusses founding the forum, the kinds of vulnerable reactions he's received from dads over the years, and why we live in an era with the biggest changes facing fathers in generations. Maguire's new book, The New Fatherhood, is available wherever you buy books.
A year ago, Emer Maguire had it all. Now she's sleeping on the floor of her brother's student flat in a shady part of Belfast – no girlfriend, no home, no hope. Where did it all go wrong? How did she end up all alone, broken hearted and with only an assistance dog called Dougal for company? Is she the Patron Saint of Bad Luck?Comedian Emer Maguire recalls how the worst year of her life - including messy break-up, serious medical issues and not one, but two life-changing diagnoses – put her on the path to living her best life. Told with her trademark honesty and songwriting brilliance, Emer's tale is both heartfelt and uplifting, a laugh-out-loud rollercoaster journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance.One of Northern Ireland's most exciting comedic voices, Emer Maguire (who was dubbed by one critic as the “indie Victoria Wood”) is a double Irish IMRO award-winning presenter and four times TEDx speaker.Written and performed by Emer Maguire Produced by Anna Hinds Executive Producer: Keith Martin Sound: David WalkerA FABEL radio production for BBC Radio 4
#998 | Ed and Daniel discuss Manchester United's win over Brentford at Old Trafford, leaving United on the brink of Champions League qualification. That's Michael Carrick's 10th win in 13 games as interim manager. It was another strong set of performances from Lammens, Maguire, and Heaven at the back and plenty of quality from Mainoo and Casemiro in midfield as well. With Champions League almost secure, the conversation turns to summer needs - especially the need for two elite midfielders plus fullback/wing depth. And is the squad ready for a 55–60 game season? Then we turn to the game against Liverpool at Old Trafford next weekend. 00:00 One Win Away 00:27 Match Reaction: United vs Brentford 01:53 Carrick's 10 Wins in 13 06:45 Goalkeeper: Lammens vs. His Predecessors 18:49 Casemiro's Farewell 29:26 How Good Is This United Side? 34:10 Amorim's Year Off and Kobbie's Contract 47:47 Liverpool Preview 56:46 Farewell If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. They cover the eight sensory systems, the overlooked science of interoception, why IBS has been reclassified as a gut-brain disorder, the freeze and collapse response, and why breathwork can actually dysregulate people who aren't ready for it. #996 | Ten points clear of Chelsea with five games left. A gritty, utterly necessary win at Stamford Bridge. United's return to the Champions League is no longer a question of whether, but when. Dan and Dharnish unpack all you need to know. With Martínez and Maguire suspended, Carrick turned to an Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui as the centre-back pairing. In front of them, Kobbie Mainoo delivered the standout performance of the afternoon alongside Casemiro, whose is giving us quite the farewell tour Carrick has imposed a more compact press and restored a mentality that had gone missing. Control in games remains the next hurdle, but the case for giving him the job permanently, barring a genuinely elite alternative, is getting harder to argue against. There's also plenty to think about in the summer - United's imperfect front three, Amad's end-product problem, and the summer recruitment required across defence, midfield and on the wing. Brentford is up next. 00:00 Introduction - Almost Back in the Champions League 02:03 Team Selection vs Chelsea 02:09 Maguire and Martinez Suspensions 06:43 Kobbie Mainoo's Performance 10:23 Casemiro's Legacy 24:52 Carrick's Record - Should He Get the Job? 41:55 Looking Ahead: Brentford and Season Run-in 46:21 Final Thoughts If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
