"Awareness in the Body - Awareness in Life" is the third episode in the Posture series of Tools of Awakening, Abdi Assadi and I, Pernilla Burke, explore the simple yet powerful practice of body awareness and posture as a way to cultivate presence. We look at what happens when we shift our awareness from the mind into the body—specifically, grounding into the feet—and how this shift can change the way we respond to life. Abdi shares insights from Chinese medicine and martial arts on how posture directly affects energy flow, while we reflect on how this practice has reshaped our own daily experiences. We also touch on the fascinating way our own presence influences those around us, from the energy in a room to the way our loved ones respond to us. The episode wraps with a guided practice to help integrate these principles into everyday life—one breath, one step at a time.(01:30) The importance of bringing awareness into the body—how shifting attention from the mind to the body changes our experience of life.(03:20) How posture affects presence and energy flow—exploring the connection between physical alignment and spiritual awareness, with insights from Chinese medicine and martial arts.(05:50) The impact of body awareness on those around us—how being grounded can influence the energy of a room and the people in it.(07:30) Real-life examples of staying grounded in daily situations—Pernilla shares how maintaining presence affects interactions with family, including her children.(09:45) The connection between posture, relaxation, and emotional balance—how proper alignment naturally reduces stress and allows for better decision-making.(10:30) Guided posture awareness practice—step-by-step instructions on aligning the spine, relaxing the shoulders, and feeling connected to the ground.(11:45) Breath awareness exercise for deeper presence—focusing on the breath at the tip of the nose and expanding awareness through the body.(15:10) How awareness naturally leads to relaxation—why presence itself is the key to feeling at ease, rather than forcing relaxation.(17:40) Why “trying to relax” doesn't work—Abdi explains how shifting attention to specific areas of the body brings effortless calm.(18:30) Closing thoughts and upcoming episodes—what's next in the Tools of Awakening series, plus a reminder that the guided practice will be available separately for easy access.

OA1091 - We are honored to welcome Somali-American author and advocate Abdi Nor Iftin for the first of a 2-part Thanksgiving episode dedicated with gratitude to the incredible efforts that so many naturalized Americans have made to be a part of this country. Abdi has recorded the full story of his life in his book Call Me American, in which he details the long journey from his escape from being forced into service as a child soldier in war-torn Somalia to his years as a refugee in Kenya before winning the U.S. diversity visa lottery and building a thoroughly American life in one of the last states you might expect. In this extended interview we get to know Abdi as he shares his story and his unique perspective on what the current American moment means for him and his community. “Especially after 36K, I was telling myself, ‘Even if they speed up, I have to go deep today…' I was telling myself, ‘This is my moment.'” My guest for today's episode is Abdi Nageeye, whose journey in 2024 could only be described as redemption at its finest. The Dutch marathoner and 2021 Olympic silver medalist who just three months ago grappled with his appointment after withdrawing late in the Olympic marathon in Paris, roared back to claim the biggest victory of his career at the TCS New York City Marathon. In a thrilling showdown against one of the strongest fields in race history, Nageeye deployed patience, strategy, and a powerful finishing kick to secure his first World Marathon Major title in 2:07:39 seconds, making history as the first Dutchman and the first European since 1996. To win the New York City Marathon from his self coach training in Eldoret to a race plan honed by years of experience on the course, Abdi turned heartbreak into triumph. We dive into his reflections on Paris, his mental and physical preparation for New York City, and what this victory means for him moving forward. But first, you'll also hear a never before released interview with Abdi from my trip to Kenya in June 2023, where we discussed a bit more of his backstory and upbringing from being born in Somalia to settling in the Netherlands as a refugee and spending time in Syria before finally being adopted by a Dutch family. I initially planned for this to be released last fall, but didn't have a chance to, but I'm now glad it's finally out. It's fun because towards the end of that first interview, I asked him what he wants to accomplish and he finally gets it done. Part one is my interview with him in Kenya and then part two is my interview with him reflecting on New York. Eric and Rob join Abdi for a discussion on Somalia from the colonial period to the present. They discuss the formation of the Somali people, the long and conflictual relationship to Ethiopia, British and Italian colonization and Somali independence before moving on to the scientific socialist period under Siad Barre. They discuss the achievements of this period, the origins of the Ogaden War conflict, and the abandonment of the USSR and of Socialism. They then discuss the disintegration of the Somali state, the long civil war, and the Islamic Court Union period, before giving some thoughts on the present.
