Hello, and happy almost-Spring! Today, before we get into our books, we're talking about historical figures. Specifically, which historical figures we'd bring back from the dead and what we would do with them during our day of hanging out. This question was harder than we thought! And for books today, we've got a family saga, and a couple of royal historical fiction novels. Thanks so much for listening! This week on the MashReads Podcast, we read and discuss John Darnielle's new novel 'Unverisal Harvester' with John Darnielle himself! 'Universal Harvester' follows Jeremy, a video store clerk in Nevada, Iowa, who notices that curious, shocking and sometimes violent scenes are being recorded on top of the store's tapes. When Jeremy and a few other employees at the video store begin to investigate the tapes, they realize that the scenes were recorded just outside of their town, leading them down a dark and unsettling mystery that has been hiding right in front of them. Join us this week as we talk with John Darnielle about grief, mystery and family, as explored in 'Universal Harvester.' And as always we close the show with recommendations: Peter recommends Wolf In White Van, John Darnielle's first novel. He also recommends Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. "It is a masterpiece of dialogue. It's just a masterpiece of subtext dialogue. It is a play of subtweets." Aliza recommends Adam Silvera's novel More Happy Than Not. "I highly recommend that book. It's very deep and sad and beautiful and wonderful." Aliza also recommends Crazy Ex Girlfriend on the CW. "Everyone should watch that show." MJ recommends the podcast Our National Conversation About Conversations About Race. "I unfortunately found out that it was canceled by Panoply, who was producing it, but there's a whole archive of episodes that you should listen to...It's just really smart, and thoughtful." He specifically recommends their episode "Will You Be My Black Friend."
In a conversation recorded before the National Book Awards were announced, we discuss the long-list nominee Burn Baby Burn (we were all rooting for you this one to win!). We have a conversation about publishers italicizing non-English languages in books. Molly suggests any book by Walter Dean Myers and The Disreputable History of Frankie Landua-Banks by E. Lockhart. Nate suggests Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton and If I Ever Get Out of Here by Eric Gansworth. He also reveals his crush on super-librarian Nancy Pearl. Lindsey suggests The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds, More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera, and American Girls by Alison Umminger Kim suggests Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero. Nathan mentions, but forgets to suggest Shadowshaper by Daniel Jose Older (but seriously go read it!)
If you follow any of my social media in the past year, you know that I stan for Adam Silvera, after his book More Happy Than Not devastated and wowed me last year to the tune of being my #1 book of the year. I have mentioned several times how excited I would be to meet him and luckily our schedules aligned enough that we were able to speak at Y'all West. Adam and I talked about everything from telling modern gay stories to how he really is a Slytherin masquerading as a Hufflepuff.
Holy Harry Potter superfans, it’s Adam Silvera! He calls himself tall for no reason, but I think the reason is he is solidly 6 foot something worth of awesome. Grab a comfy chair and enjoy my delightful chat with the debut author of MORE HAPPY THAN NOT about his self-made MFA, reppin’ the Bronx, and the theme of choice in all our lives.
