Words by Angela CroudaceUK death metal giants Ingested are returning to Australian shores, and drummer Lyn Jeffs gave HEAVY the inside scoop on what fans can expect. After their tour in 2023 alongside Archspire, the band was blown away by the warm reception and immediately knew they had to come back — this time for a headlining run.“We always wanted to come over and do a headliner,” Lyn shared. “The Aussie crowds were amazing — really good energy, and we made solid connections with bands like Melancholia and Werewolves. It just felt right.”Ingested's recent shift back to a five-piece line up has brought fresh energy and creativity to both the stage and studio. With the addition of guitarist Andrew and bassist Tom, the band embraces a more collaborative approach to writing and performance. “It's way more dynamic now,” said Lyn. “We've got new perspectives, and it's even influencing the sound. There's a section in the new track ‘Ultra Flesh' that's just bass — something we've never done before.”Their physical and mental preparation for tours has evolved over the years, too. Gone are the hard-partying days of trying to live out Pantera-style tour videos. Now, Lyn sticks to yoga, running, and a gym routine to stay stage-ready. “Playing the kind of music we do is like a sport,” he said. “It's not normal to play these tempos — it's f***ing stupid really — but if you prepare well, you can still perform at your best.”The band is embracing this tour as a way to connect their evolving sound with their roots. Expect older tracks to return to the set list, now that they've got longer headline slots.Despite their brutal sound, Lyn reminds us not to judge a book by its cover. “People expect us to be scary or into horror 24/7,” he laughs. “But most of us are just regular people who like football, cycling, or different kinds of music.”With their grounded approach and renewed energy, Ingested's return to Australia promises to be a tour that fans — and the band — won't soon forget.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

▶DISCORD: – Participă la următoarele discuții din book club: discord.gg/meditatii ▶DIALOGURI FILOSOFICE: – Română: soundcloud.com/meditatii/sets/dialoguri-pe-discord – Engleză: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL…NYNkbJjNJeXrNHSaV ▶PODCAST INFO: – Website: podcastmeditatii.com – Newsletter: podcastmeditatii.com/aboneaza – YouTube: youtube.com/c/meditatii – Apple Podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/medi…ii/id1434369028 – Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/1tBwmTZQHKaoXkDQjOWihm – RSS: feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundclo…613/sounds.rss ▶SUSȚINE-MĂ: – Patreon: www.patreon.com/meditatii – PayPal: paypal.me/meditatii ▶TWITCH: – LIVE: www.twitch.tv/meditatii – Rezumate: www.youtube.com/channel/UCK204s-jdiStZ5FoUm63Nig ▶SOCIAL MEDIA: – Instagram: www.instagram.com/meditatii.podcast – TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@meditatii.podcast – Facebook: www.facebook.com/meditatii.podcast – Goodreads: goodreads.com/avasilachi – Telegram (jurnal): t.me/andreivasilachi – Telegram (chat): t.me/podcastmeditatii ▶EMAIL: andrei@podcastmeditatii.com

[editor's note: Due to the context of rapidly developing events in the region, it is important to note that this conversation was recorded back in early October, 2024]   In this episode, we speak with Nihal El Aasar about her recently penned essay, "Left Wing Melancholia, the Arab Political Subject." We speak about Palestine's importance to the Arab political subject and the need to analyze the current absence of the Arab masses in light of Israel's genocidal onslaught. She highlights the influence of Palestinian intellectual Ghassan Kanafani on her work, particularly his broader definition of the Palestinian question and the importance of not isolating it from the wider struggle against capitalism and imperialism in the so-called Middle East and beyond. Nihal critiques the narrow framing of the Palestinian struggle vis-a-vis Israel and stresses the need to consider the wider Arab and regional dimensions of the struggle. We also explore the role of reactionary Arab regimes play in weakening the National Liberation Movement and preying on the masses' instincts toward national and class liberation. Nihal provides historical context, discussing the impact of the 1967 defeat on Arab socialism and pan-Arabism, and the subsequent rise of neoliberal policies that have continued to govern certain segments of the region. Through a materialist lens, she critiques the current political paralysis that can be observed throughout the Arab world, attributing it to severe repression and systemic depoliticization. We cross-reference this paralysis and juxtapose the phenomenon across similar instances happening across the world—including for Black folks in the US. She emphasizes the need to grapple with defeat as a material reality and learn from past struggles to reactivate the colonized masses and reengage in political struggle.   Nihal is an Egyptian writer, researcher and radio host. She mainly writes about politics, political economy and culture. Her work has appeared in various Arabic and English language publications. If you like what we do and want to support our ability to have more conversations like this. Please consider becoming a patron. You can do so for as little as a 1 Dollar a month.   This episode is edited & produced by Aidan Elias. Music, as always, is by Televangel   Links: "Left Wing Melancholia, the Arab Political Subject."   For another related conversation on Nasser, the context of Arab regimes today, and some of the same dynamics that Nihal outlines in this conversation, we recently hosted Ameed Faleh discussing among other things Anouar Abdel-Malek's Egypt: Military Society.

Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch

"What Freud may have missed here is that the investment in the lost object is a much more reconstructive and integrative process. It's one where we remember all the stories that we have heard from the lost object - the repetitive stories about the childhood of the person or how they met significant others and all these stories are within us and revived, and we have questions. We think: ‘Too bad I never asked about this or that' and in activating these memories we also experience joy and we have a slow process of integration which is not necessarily about loss but about how continuous this person lives in our mind and that is a little bit the focus of this novel. It's in that sense a portrait of the mind and the process of mourning."    Episode Description: We begin with recognizing Cordelia's contributions to clinical and theoretical psychoanalysis in addition to her fiction writing. Her latest novel, Momento, has been described as "a journey through the labyrinth of the dream world" and invites the reader into the experiences of ambiguity, timelessness, and the absurd. On a theoretical level, Cordelia introduces the usefulness of the term lethe - the river in the underworld of Hades that causes people to forget their past when they drink from it. We discuss the distinction between libido and lethe and how they manifest themselves in the analytic setting. She emphasizes the importance of understanding aggression not as a stand-alone but as a container of further meaning. We close with her sharing her childhood story of wanting to please her father with her detailed knowledge - a sublimation that she continues to gain pleasure from to this day.   Our Guest: Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau, Ph.D.,  is a Training and Supervising Analyst and on the Faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute as well as of the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society. Her area of expertise is metapsychology, in particular drive theory and its clinical applications. An updated version of her monograph of Freud's metapsychology, Life Drive & Death Drive, Libido & Lethe, is just being published by International Psychoanalytic Books. Her psychoanalytic books and articles have been published in many languages. She has also published three novels and edited a Freud Reader, an Essay Book, and three collections of Short Stories. She is the Chair of the IPA in Culture Committee and works in private practice in Brookline, Massachusetts.   Recommended Readings: Freud, S (1917) Morning and Melancholia. In Freud, S. In her words “there have been certain weighted expectations for the Arab masses to react more strongly and urgently to this genocide. Some have heeded the call; some have tried and failed.” She draws on the work of people like Ghassan Kanafani, Nouri Gana, and friend of the podcast Hannah Proctor, to explore the relationship between counterrevolution in Egypt, US Imperialism, and Palestinian liberation through the lens of Arab political subjectivity. Nihal El Aasar is an Egyptian researcher living in London. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

Our month's theme and our year's theme have crossed over. You could call it “LARS VON TRIER'S BULLSHIT TOMORROW” but it may not be bullshit for Lars or the character of Justine so much as cathartic. Imagine being overwhelmed with crippling depression and then you discover a rogue planet is hurtling towards Earth. Guys who get their astronomy news from Joe Rogan aren't too worried about it but you know exactly what's going to happen. The end of the world. The world is shitting itself and you're basking peacefully in the sun's reflection off of the planetoid Melancholia as it looms towards Earth. Yes, we are discussing von Trier's 2011 examination of extreme depression in “MELANCHOLIA” starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Personally I would spend all of that time collecting as many Beanie Babies as I can. It's a passion of mine and I'd rather go out doing what I love the most. I just hope the stores will be open until the very end. I want my last moments to be me handing my credit card to a cashier for a tie-dye Iggy Iguana. Signing that receipt right as I'm misted into nothing. I may need to borrow some money though. Abby and Patrick welcome labor journalist Sarah Jaffe – author of Necessary Trouble and Work Won't Love You Back – for her first interview about her forthcoming book, From the Ashes: Grief and Revolution in a World on Fire. From the Ashes is at once a deeply personal narrative and a wide-ranging journey of searing reportage on the lives and struggles of individuals and communities. Sarah, Abby, and Patrick take on the overdeterminations of loss, grief, mourning, and memorialization from contemporary political discourse to Freud's classic “Mourning and Melancholia.” In what ways can individual experiences of grief be fundamentally singular and yet also sites of collective solidarity and social transformation? What are the norms, narratives, and timelines that get imposed on expressions of psychic pain in the wake of loss, from the DSM to Human Resources to newspaper headlines? How does the experience of loss differ when the lost object in question isn't necessarily a person, but a place, an ideal, intergenerational links, or expectations for a now-foreclosed future instead?Details about From the Ashes are here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/sarah-jaffe/from-the-ashes/9781541703490/ and the book is available for preorder here: https://hachettebookgroup.formstack.com/forms/fromtheashes (use code FTA20 for 20% off, plus bonus content)Sarah's website is here: https://sarahljaffe.com/Key texts cited in the episode:Freud, “Mourning and Melancholia”Freud, “On Transience”Jacqueline Rose, “Virginia Woolf and the Death of Modernism”Namwali Serpell, The FurrowsHave you noticed that Freud is back? Lars von Trier is a controversial filmmaker with his work and as a person himself. Due to his depression that, he creates films with dark characters with, sometimes, dark storylines. But his films are great. Some are beautifully shot with referneces to classical art. This film "Melancholia" is one of those. It's about the last days of the world due to a planet that is literally going to crash into Earth and the main character welcomes with open arms. It's more dramatic than how it sounds but it's there and it's in full effect. The film is great for its cinematography, how Earth plays a role as a planet that is dying by the frame and we get to see characters go through it. We see characters that represent illnesses such as depression and anxiety. The film highlights and sometimes makes it very visually poetic.I love the fact that Trier made a film like this and it's not overdramatic. Overall, it's a dark and straight-in-your-face type of filmmaking that anybody can appreciate.Four out of four tokes.

Dr. Mary M. Alcaro, a visiting assistant professor of literature at Bryn Mawr College, takes us on a captivating journey through the intersections of plague, trauma, and Middle English texts. This episode kicks off our new interview series with Dr. Alcaro, who shares her path from undergraduate curiosity to a dissertation on the social and psychological effects of the Black Death. Through her fascinating insights, we uncover the profound influence of the plague on language and its lasting impact on literary theory and the history of medicine. Filled with humor and introspection, this conversation shines a new light on medieval literature and its contemporary relevance. Our discussion takes a closer look at Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Book of the Duchess," highlighting how Chaucer subtly addresses the plague's impact without explicitly mentioning it. Dr. Alcaro explains the use of terms like "wound" to reflect the collective suffering of the audience, drawing intriguing parallels to modern-day euphemisms and the language of trauma. We also explore the concept of a "history of omission," where what is left unsaid can be as revealing as what is recorded, and how language evolves in response to shared traumatic experiences. This episode offers a thought-provoking examination of how literary works navigate the complexities of human grief and communal memory. Rounding out the episode, we delve into the unexpected connections between medieval melancholia and modern-day humor, uncovering tales that resonate with contemporary comedic sensibilities. Dr. Alcaro reflects on the historical context of forced positivity during pandemics, drawing parallels to our recent experiences with COVID-19. We contemplate the long-term impacts of the pandemic on literature and society, pondering how themes of disease, isolation, and sensory perception might shape future works. In this episode of The Coaching Psychology Pod, host Dr. Natalie Lancer, with Raul Aparici, an integrative coach and psychotherapist, and Dr. Susan Kahn, a psychodynamic coaching psychologist, engage in a rich discussion about the nuances of psychodynamic coaching. We explore the wounded and celebrated self, emphasising the need for coaches to be self-aware and to understand their own vulnerabilities. The conversation also covers the contributions of influential thinkers such as Winnicott and Bion, and the use of creative techniques in coaching. The importance of ethical boundaries, supervision, and respecting client defenses in deep psychodynamic work is highlighted. We ask: What is psychodynamic coaching? What is the difference between psychotherapy and psychodynamic coaching? Which tools and concepts are useful in psychodynamic coaching? Does goal-setting show up in psychodynamic coaching? What are the challenges in using psychodynamic terminology with clients? Why is containment, referral and maintaining boundaries in the coaching relationship important? What roles do supervision, reflective practice and self-awareness have in psychodynamic coaching work? Who are influential thinkers in the field of psychodynamic coaching? How can we train in psychodynamic coaching?   What are the risks and rewards of psychodynamic coaching? The importance of taking a client-centred approach is emphasised in psychodynamic coaching. It privileges understanding the unconscious and the here and now in coaching relationships, such as unpicking transference and counter transference in coaching sessions. Psychodynamic coaching draws upon a rich lineage of a specific set of assumptions and philosophical foundations, aspects of which we cover in our conversation. Learn how this distinctive approach can be integrated into your coaching practice with expert guidance and education in this field.  Our guests today are: Dr Susan Kahn is a Chartered Coaching Psychologist and Business Psychologist, an executive coach, consultant, mediator, BPS registered supervisor and author.  She writes about below the surface dynamics at work and her research interests encompass vulnerability, conflict, leadership and resilience.  She has written three books, Death & the City: On Loss, Mourning and Melancholia at Work; Bounce Back, How to Fail Fast and be Resilient at Work and Reinvent Yourself: Psychological Insights that will Transform your Work Life. She is also a lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London, teaching coaching and organisational psychology, and is a faculty member at the School of Life, working with businesses to develop their emotional intelligence. Raul Aparici is a coach, psychotherapist, consultant and facilitator. He is the Head of Faculty for The School of Life, a global organisation focussed on delivering psychological and philosophical insights to help people learn, heal and grow. With a diverse background in literature, fitness, management and consulting, an MA in Critical theory, and an MA in Gestalt Therapy Theory, he is driven by curiosity and a desire to help others make the most out of their current situation and likes to match academic insights with commercial pragmatism. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Ever since I was 7 years old and first "played" with the Interactive Media of Encarta 97 Encyclopedia World Music on my computer, I became captivated by the sounds of Trinidad's steel drums. These sounds, perhaps through cultural associations, filled me with absolute joy. In the naive imagination of a 7-year-old Peruvian girl, the Caribbean was portrayed as a paradise brimming with life and carnival vibes. As a young girl just starting her percussion workshop at school, I dreamed of playing in a live steel pan band. "As I delved deeper into the history of this instrument and learned about the colonization stories behind it, my perspective began to shift. On the one hand, working with recordings of steel drum music still evokes fond memories of an ever-happy past shaped by its presence in pop culture. Conversely, as a migrant, I felt compelled to share the stories behind the waves of migration from colonized lands to those of the colonizers.  "Now, using sample technologies from DAWs I can play along with this live steel drum band. I resonate emotionally and critically with the desire to preserve one's traditional culture, especially coming from a migrant background in the land of the colonizers. Despite facing structural racism and other forms of violence, I admire how the pan players infuse the grey skies with the vibrant colors of calypso and soca, even amidst the distant echoes and noises of Brixton's tube station." Steel drums in Brixton reimagined by Ale Borea. The film, set in a small comminuty in the Scottish Highlands in the 1970s, tells the story of Bess McNeill, a simply, godly woman who marries outsider oil rig worker Jan. When Jan is paralyzed after a work accident, he compels Bess to take other lovers in order to "keep him alive"...a task which she steadily comes to believe has divine connotations. Shot in 35mm 'scope with the great Robby Muller behind the camera, the film is a visually staggering work broaching difficult subject matter in the realms of faith, sexuality, and patriarchy all rendered in Von Trier's singular tenor, equal parts brutal, earnest, and cheekily playful. We discuss the career of Von Trier, his work as a founding member of the Dogme95 collective, and the later period evolution of his storytelling. Then, we wrestle with the film's themes and execution of its ideas. Does the movie hold up for a longtime devotee and a newcomer alike? Finally, we try to make sense of Von Trier's oeuvre, and what - if anything - could be considered the trademarks of his style.Follow Liam Billingham on Twitter.Listen and subscribe to Die Hard On A Blank Podcast.Read & Subscribe to Peter Raleigh's Newsletter 'Long Library'. ....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Have you felt sad, lethargic, and are experiencing a lack of interest in things you're usually invested in? It's probably because you've listened to our discussion on Lars von Trier's 2011 psychological-drama 'Melancholia'. We've just come out of three months straight of bleak grayness with no sun in sight, but the heavens aligned when we got together for this session with a warm sunny day...thank god, we needed it considering the emotionally heavy subject matter. For this episode we're drinking 'Beat' by Heart State Brewing,. This film stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling, and Udo Kier.

The original dudes are back, with an original dudes topic revisiting our pessimism (because of intellect) and our optimism (because of will). No it's not just a doomer affectation that we can use to sound as cool as we look, its a critical method of engaging with the bleak reality that faces us. FUTURE FOSSILS

This week I have the joy of sharing a long-overdue discussion with legendary psychedelic media pioneer Ken Adams (Vimeo | LinkedIn), one of the first people I ever interviewed on record years before Future Fossils and whose influence on my own creative life cannot be overstated. Two of Ken's main claims to fame are the films he created in collaboration with Terence McKenna, namely Alien Dreamtime (mediocre fan upload, archived references to) and Imaginatrix (rental page). This June was the thirtieth anniversary of Alien Dreamtime's theatrical release, a major if initially under-appreciated moment in the history of digital film-making, and I had the good fortune to meet up with Ken here in Santa Fe for his commemorative screening at The Jean Coctea Cinema. What followed was an EPIC storytelling download about bold underground innovation told by one of the most soulful, thoughtful, heartfelt, humble, humorous, and generous people I know.✨ Support Future Fossils:• Become a patron on Substack, Patreon, and/or Bandcamp for MANY extras, including a members-only FB Group and private channels on our Discord Server!• Buy the show's soundtrack (recorded live at Psychedelic Science 2023) on Bandcamp.• Browse my art and buy original paintings and prints (or commission new work).• Dig my reading list at the Future Fossils Bookshop.org page!• Follow my music and awesome, eclectic playlists on Spotify.✨ Tip Jars:@futurefossils on Venmo • $manfredmacx on CashApp • @michaelgarfield on PayPal✨ Chapters, Summary, & Keywords provided by Podium.Page:(0:00:00) - Reminiscing on Psychedelic Underground and Filmmaking(0:10:07) - Ken's Childhood & Early Adulthood(0:25:04) - Screenings and Influence of Psychedelic Movie(0:30:06) - McKenna and Psychedelic Community Influence(0:35:24) - Nature, Doubt, Validation(0:44:23) - Late Night Studio Discovery and Reflection(0:49:30) - Non-Human Encounters and Embracing the Weird(0:57:17) - Encounters With Terence McKenna After His Passing(1:10:46) - Spiritual Experiences and the Need for Change(1:18:51) - Life, Legacy, and Creative Expression ReflectionsJoin me as I host Ken Adams, an experimental filmmaker, documentarian, and psychedelic explorer. We journey through his life from his childhood in Louisiana, his graduate studies in sociology and anthropology, to his discovery of LSD, and his eventual meeting with Terence McKenna. Ken shares his experiences with psychedelics and computers, and we discuss the impact these have had on his life and work. He provides insight into the psychedelic world in San Francisco, shedding light on the risks people took to make psychedelia accessible. This episode offers a fascinating look into the world of psychedelic filmmaking, with Ken Adams sharing how he created a business model from showcasing his experimental film. From the Adobe theater in Austin to the Roxy in San Francisco, Ken reveals how his work was embraced in the psychedelic space. He further explores the influence of Terence McKenna, discussing how Terence navigated the expectations of being a celebrity, his thoughts on psychedelics, and his ability to unite the psychedelic community. Finally, we examine Ken's experiences with non-human entities in altered states of consciousness, as well as his ideas on serving the common good. Ken shares his unusual encounters and his belief in the need for imaginative solutions to the issues facing the planet. We also reflect on the sadness and loneliness of the digital era, and discuss how digital arts are changing our world.
