Last episode, Tara put out the call for queer YA books and a reader did the damn thing and delivered. So this week, we start off with a handful of fantastic reader recommendations for the little people in your life. Audiobook listening speeds, sphagnum moss, The Odyssey, and other queer topics are also discussed. Official Recommendations  From Kris: Prime Target (Apple TV+) Kris's official recommendation this week is the TV series Prime Target. A gay mathematician who's disastrously bad at relationships stumbles onto a discovery that puts him in the sights of a shadowy conspiracy. From Tara: If It's Meant to Be by Lily Seabrooke Tara's official recommendation this week is If It's Meant to Be by Lily Seabrooke. It's a "falling for the best friend's sister" romance that's set in a cozy small town. It also has a very fun disastrous lead (sensing a theme, here) who has no idea that everyone around her can see how down bad she is for the love interest. Tara's recommended this author before, but this is her favourite so far. Independent booksellers continued to expand in 2023, with more than 200 new stores opening

White Rose Books & More is part of the ever-expanding and diversifying world of independent bookstores. Even as industry sales were slow in 2023, membership in the American Booksellers Association (ABA) continued its years-long revival. It now stands at 2,433, more than 200 over the previous year, and has doubled since 2016. Around 190 more stores are in the process of opening over the next two years, according to the ABA. “Our numbers are really strong, and we have a solid, diverse pipeline of new stores to come,” says the book association's CEO, Allison Hill. She cites a range of reasons for people opening stores, from opposing bans to championing diversity to pursuing new careers after the pandemic. “Some are opening to give back to their community. And some still just love books,” she said during a phone interview. Leah Johnson, author of the prize-winning young adult novel “You Should See Me in a Crown” was troubled by the surge in book bans and by what she saw as a shortage of outlets for diverse voices. Last year, she founded Loudmouth Books, one of several independent sellers to open in Indianapolis. “I'm not a person who dreamed of opening a bookstore. I didn't want to be anybody's boss,” Johnson says. “But I saw a need and I had to fill it.” Independent bookselling has never been dependably profitable, and Hill notes various concerns—rising costs, dwindling aid from the pandemic, and the ongoing force of Amazon.com, which remains the industry's dominant retailer even after the e-book market stalled a decade ago. Nikki High, owner of Octavia's Bookshelf, cites a variety of challenges and adjustments—convincing customers they don't have to order items from Amazon.com, supplementing sales by offering tote bags, journals, and other non-book items. “And when we started, [...] we had a ton of different categories. But I found out that short stories and poetry almost never sell for us. People want general fiction, bestsellers, children's books. Classics sell very well, books by James Baldwin and Toni Morrison and Bell Hooks and June Jordan.” “It's incredibly important to listen to your customers.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Carol Roberts, head of Young People's Services at Troy Public Library, recommends three books by Black authors for Black History Month, plus one on Chinese cuisine and history. "A History of Me" (Adrea Theodore, ill. Erin Robinson, 2022, for ages 5-8) explores the author's experience of being the only person of color in school as slavery is discussed. The young-adult novel "Opposite of Always" (Justin A. Reynolds, 2019) presents the story of a boy falling for a girl who dies of sickle cell anemia, and his Groundhogs-Day-like replaying of the day they met. "Ellie Engle Saves Herself" (Leah Johnson, 2023), the story of a 12-year-old queer Black girl who feels unexceptional until she develops the superpower to bring dead things to life, deals with the difficulties of surviving middle school. Just in time for Lunar New Year, the fourth book, "Chinese Menu: The History, Myths, and Legends Behind Your Favorite Foods" (Grace Lin, 2023) tells the origin stories for various popular Chinese dishes, with one recipe for the author's mother's scallion pancakes. It's billed for ages ~8-12, but sounds like a yummy book for all readers. For more details, visit www.thetroylibrary.org. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

She is also an accomplished, highly driven Clinical Integrative Health Pharmacist, with primary focus in pain, mental health (depression, anxiety, insomnia, Autism, etc.) and geriatric medication management. Dr. Leah believes that complete physical/mental health and well-being can be influenced by the utilization of cannabis, as well as other herbal remedies and supplements, in conjunction with pharmaceutical medications. In an effort to improve the overall health and well-being of patients, Dr. Leah works with patients and their healthcare providers, from all over the US, to reduce the amount of medications taken, alter timing and dosing of medications to improve effectiveness, and identify medications which could be causing issues. She also works with cannabis companies to advise them on formulations, dosing, safety, interactions, and how to better help their customers see health improvements with the use of their products. Lastly Dr. Leah speaks at medical conferences and on panels to help educate providers and patients on the benefits of utilizing cannabis medicine in therapy. Her last speaking event was February 2022 at the annual ACA/ACVP/PPHI conference. Complete physical & mental health and well-being can be influenced by the utilization of cannabis, as well as other herbal remedies and supplements, in conjunction with pharmaceutical medications. Believes that most patients are given too many and inappropriate prescription medications, while not being given the knowledge for utilizing effective herbals and supplements to reduce pill burden. I also see that many patients are unable to get full relief of their ailments due to the missing components in their medication regimens. Works with patients and their healthcare providers, from all over the country, to reduce the amount of medications taken, alter timing and dosing of medications to improve effectiveness, and identify medications which could be causing issues. Also contracts with cannabis companies to advise them on dosing, safety, interactions, and how to better help their customers see health improvements with the use of their products. Holds Doctorate degree in Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and will be receiving my Masters degree in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics in 2023. In this episode I finally release Part II of my conversation with friend Leah Johnson (@leah_mojo). We discuss toxic shame in regard to men and women by examining an announcement made by a youth pastor which was shared on social media. This is a deep conversation, one which goes beyond the shallows. It is a "gray area". Opinions on such a topic will likely please no one. But rather than being avoidant or absent I hope that we would press in, wading through the uncomfortable waters together in grace and humility. President Stanley reflects on MSU's 167 years of “making a difference”

This month Michigan State University marked the 167th year since its establishment by the State of Michigan. From the 63 students, five faculty members, and three buildings on campus when we opened our doors in May 1857, we now enroll almost 50,000 students, boast 5,700 faculty and academic staff and 564 campus buildings. “These kinds of anniversaries are helpful in allowing us to take stock of where we're going as an institution,” Stanley says. “The founders would be very pleased with what they saw from Michigan State today. We're a top-100 ranked global university with half a million degreed Spartans who bleed green in our alumni network around the world. And all 83 counties in Michigan are being served by MSU. Those who envisioned this land grant mission would see it fulfilled on the state level as they wanted, but they would also see the impact MSU has on the national and international level as well through our work. We're taking the mission and working exponentially to expand it to be an institution that touches peoples' lives in so many different dimensions in so many ways.”President Stanley talks about recognition for MSU faculty from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “We have outstanding faculty who are really the lifeblood of what we do at MSU.”MSU has a new dean of our renowned Lyman Briggs residential college in the sciences, Kendra Spence Cheruvelil, who has served as interim Dean of Lyman Briggs College since December 2020. “Dean Cheruvelil has really made a difference in her interim time and there was extraordinary support in Lyman Briggs for her elevation to the role of dean. She's very much deserving of that. She's an internationally recognized ecology researcher who's an expert on lakes and bodies of water around this area and does tremendous work in analyzing their vibrancy and health. Water is so important to Michigan State, so to have someone who's an expert in that is important.“The residential colleges are a unique aspect of what we do, and they really allow students to experience the kind of small college experience that people can find very valuable. It's not for everybody, but it's an opportunity to be on campus and live with some of your faculty and instructors and fellow students who are interested in the same major. “James Madison, Lyman Briggs, and the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities allow this kind of coming together to occur and allow for a more intense educational experience. You can have a great educational experience at MSU without doing a residential college. You can create your own kind of nooks of knowledge and leadership with your roommates and people you want to live with who may share common interests. Those options are always available, too. President Stanley talks about the transition in the head coaching position for MSU Volleyball.“Cathy George was such a pioneer in women's sports, and we must put this in the context of all the ways in which she contributed as the first woman coach to take a team to the NCAA tournament in volleyball. Leah Johnson comes to us from Illinois State University, a Division I school where during her five seasons there, her team made five postseason tournaments, including four straight NCAA tournaments. That's where we want to be. As I think about our Michigan State teams, we want to compete for championships, and we believe we can. Coach Johnson has really shown her capabilities, and we look forward to her first season in the fall.”Give Green Day is Tuesday, March 15th when Spartans come together to support our students through a wide range of impactful programs. It's a chance for all of us to make a big difference in the space of 24 hours. Givingday.msu.edu is the place to go. Talk a bit about the important contributions to MSU's excellence that our donors make.“They are so important, Russ, and philanthropy is really the margin of excellence. I had a chance to attend with our students some alumni events over the weekend and hear their inspirational stories. The way they talked about the way in which Michigan State University has changed their lives and helped change the lives of their families and their siblings and everyone they know was extraordinary. These are all people who are committed to doing something to help their communities going forward. They're in different areas, but all related to science. They're all students who did research, but what they talked about at MSU was opportunity. They said very few institutions provided the opportunity to allow them to fulfill their dreams, and MSU did that.“They also had financial support to do this; all of them were recipients of scholarships. The scholarships that donors provide to our students and grant support for our faculty translates into changing lives and impact that goes far beyond just that gift. There's really a tremendous effect that comes from peoples' willingness to donate. This day is a chance to make a big difference in a mere 24 hours. I encourage everybody to participate. I appreciate all the giving that people are doing already, but this is a time to step up a little bit and make a difference in a student's or a faculty member's time at MSU.”President Stanley reflects on Black History Month, and in circling back to the first topic in our conversation adds “We've had 167 years now to make a difference, and we continue to do it every day. I thank everybody who's a part of it at Michigan State. We're going to continue to push the limits and make our state a better place to be.”Read President Stanley's Spartan Community letter by clicking on the communications tab at president.msu.edu. And as President Stanley said, there are links to more information throughout the letter on everything we've been talking about. Optometry is on the cusp of an important and exciting paradigm shift. As the industry becomes dominantly female and myopia management is expected to become the new standard of care. Female optometrists who do ortho-k and myopia control are now in a critical position of leadership to change our industry! Matthew Herzberg has on three amazing female optometrists from each generation (Boomer, Gen-X, and Millennial) Caroline Cauchi OD FIAOMC, Cheryl Chapman OD FIAOMC, and Leah Johnson OD, FAAO, FSLS to speak directly to female optometrists on why they should take up myopia management and be a part of this important inflection point in our industry. Want to learn how to do ortho-K? Enroll NOW in the AAOMC Virtual Boot Camp for Newcomers https://www.orthokmeeting.com/ BECOME AN AAOMC MEMBER: https://aaomc.org CAROLINE GUERRERO CAUCHI, OD, FIAOMC Dr. Guerrero Cauchi pursued the study of psychology during her university education. She worked as a therapist of multiply challenged children to put herself through school. During that time, she co-authored a book (Effective Approaches) designed to train teachers to work with children having disabilities. Her work with partially sighted children caused her to investigate a new career path — optometry. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry, she opened her private practice. This has allowed her to use her skills in psychology, child development, and human behavior to create a caring comfortable eye care environment for people of all ages — especially kids. In 2004 her interest in pediatric care led her to the field of orthokeratology. She spent the next three years becoming an expert in the field and in 2007 was grated the designation FIAO (Fellow of the International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control). Just one short year later, the Academy asked her to sit on the Board of Directors. (link to IAOMC). As a member of the Board, she is responsible for setting care policy, educating doctors new to orthoK and is the Chair of Fellowship for 6 international sections of the Academy. CHERYL CHAPMAN OD FIAOMC Dr. Cheryl Chapman is a graduate of the University of Houston College of Optometry and has an undergraduate degree from Creighton University. She is a Diplomate with the American Board of Optometry, achieving extensive Board Certification and completing more than 50 hours of continuing education (above and beyond the normal state requirement, which is 22 hours per year). She is also a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Chapman is proud to bring this extra level of ongoing education to her patients. Dr. Chapman has instituted a full-scope myopia management clinic within her practice and works tirelessly to spread myopia management knowledge. In addition to working one-on-one with doctors to implement practice protocols, she lectures within the optometric community as well as to local pediatricians and ophthalmologists. Serving as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry, Dr. Chapman enjoys working closely in training 4th year extern students. Other areas of specialty include managing eye diseases such as: severe dry eye, keratoconus, and computer vision syndrome. Dr. Chapman is a specialist in the fitting of specialty contact lenses such as orthokeratology, scleral lenses and hybrid lenses. In 2010, Dr. Chapman was awarded the Dr. Charles Seeger Memorial Award from the Nebraska Optometric Association for Young Optometrist of the Year. She lives in Omaha, Nebraska with her husband and six children. LEAH JOHNSON OD, FAAO, FSLS Dr. Leah Johnson is the Director of Professional Affairs for CooperVision Specialty EyeCare, Americas. She is responsible for the development and implementation of clinical and educational programs supporting current and future eye care practitioners across the Americas and China. She is a graduate of the University of Houston, College of Optometry where she also completed a post-doctorate fellowship in Cornea & Contact Lens. Afterwards, she practiced in Houston, Texas with a concentration in specialty contact lenses. She currently serves at the University of Houston, College of Optometry as clinical adjunct faculty, focusing on Myopia Management Services. Dr. Johnson is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Education Society. Dr. Johnson has spent extensive time in China, which contains the highest numbers of myopic children. There she works collectively with key opinion leaders and eyecare professionals to bring a better understanding of myopia and supports selecting the best treatment options that enhance patient outcomes and care.

Change is in the air, and we're delighted to bring a fresh new voice to the podcast. Debut author Leah Johnson is here to talk about You Should See Me in a Crown, her joyful, hilarious young adult novel about the irrepressible Liz Lighty. As a queer, Black teen in a prom-obsessed Midwestern town, Liz thinks that it's impossible to fit in. But when she meets the new girl at school—who is also her competition for prom queen—everything changes. In this episode, Leah talks with host Suzanne McCabe about growing up in Indiana, becoming a fiction writer, and “giving queer folks the happy ending they deserve.” Learn more about Leah and You Should See Me in a Crown.
