Nick and John take a Lake and Shed long look at the second screenplay for the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film series. On the Lake side of things, Nick explores the Johnny Depp casting scandal and the lead-up in 2018 to the 2019 Tweet Heard Round the World. John explains that the cut scenes from this dog's mess of a movie point that the shooting script, i.e., what Rowling wrote and approved before David Yates butchered the film in the editing room, was all about Leta Lestrange. More important, John makes the Shed point that every Rowling book features a text of some kind that the characters struggle to understand — and that Crimes of Grindelwald has ten of these, a veritable library of interior texts to interpret.New to the Lake and Shed Kanreki Birthday series? Here's what we're doing:On 31 July 2025, Joanne Murray, aka J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, will be celebrating her 60th birthday. This celebration is considered a ‘second birth' in Japan or Kanreki because it is the completion of the oriental astrological cycle. Zu Pansy fällt uns wirklich nichts Gutes ein. Außer, dass sie einmal ein Geweih hatte - aber Moment, wieso das? Wofür ist Pansy eigentlich so bekannt in den Büchern? Und wie ist denn jetzt nun die Gefühlslage zwischen ihr und Draco?

Lee Jordan hat eine Zunge aus Silber: Er ist er Hogwarts Stadionsprecher beim Quidditch, später moderiert er das die Zauberradioshow "Potterwatch". Aber wurde er in alle Geheimnisse der Weasley Zwillinge einbezogen? Kannte er zum Beispiel die Karte des Rumtreibers?

Das letzte Buch: Die Heiligtümer des Todes! Wieso wir so skeptisch sind und uns jede Lösung etwas zu glücklich erscheint, besprechen wir hier. Wir wollen euch den letzten Teil natürlich nicht madig machen, denn Harry Potter ist und bleibt natürlich ein Meisterwerk - und irgendwie, muss es ja zum Ende kommen...

Die Familie Black ist fürnehm und gar alt, aber sie verbergen auch einige dunkle Geheimnisse. Wer verstößt denn seinen eigenen Sohn, nur weil er ein Squib ist? Wieso köpft man gerne Hauselfen und wer ist denn jetzt nun eigentlich alles Teil des großen Stammbaums?

Mundungus Fletcher ist kleinkriminell und ein Schisser, aber dennoch im Orden. Wieso er ausgerechnet ein wichtiges Mitglied sein soll ist allerdings fraglich. Wer hat beschlossen, dass es eine gute Idee ist, wenn er Wache übernimmt und bei der Schlacht der 7 Potters dabei ist?

Crabbe & Goyle sind die bulligen, dümmlichen Bodyguards von Draco. Über was reden die drei eigentlich so? Und wieso ärgern sie eigentlich vorzugsweise im Hogwarts Express? Crabbe zeigt dann ja doch eine überraschende Entwicklung und wir fragen uns, wie er es schafft, das Dämonenfeuer heraufzubeschwören...

Heute besprechen wir Harry James Potter aus Teil 6, dem Halbblutprinzen. Wieso erkennt Harry eigentlich nicht die Schrift des Prinzen? Ist es normal seine Eifersucht auf brüderlichen Beschützerinstinkt zu schieben? Wir nähern uns dem Ende der ersten Reihe "Ein Buch - eine Folge"...

“Still Comes The Night" Raised by a drama teacher mother and an acting coach father, the arts were coursing mightily through the Sudol house. A lover of literature and music, the Seattle-born Alison Sudol started crafting her path at a young age. In her teens, the self-taught pianist created a persona that operated under the A Fine Frenzy sobriquet, releasing a power trio of albums, including 2007's A Cell In The Sea, 2009's Bomb In the Birdcage and 2012's Pines. A Fine Frenzy played SXSW, toured Europe, opened for everyone from the Stooges to Rufus Wainwright and had international hits in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. But by 2011, she announced A Fine Frenzy had been summarily put to bed. Focusing on her acting, Alison joined the cast of Transparent and later the program Dig and in 2016 she got cast as Queen Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. She went on to star in the subsequent two Fantastic Beasts movies—The Crimes Of Grindelwald, and the Secrets of Dumbledore. Retuning to music in 2018, Alison put out two marvelous EPS—Moon and Moonlite—and in September, she put out Still Comes The Night, her first album under her own name. It is time for another magical episode about a film franchise, albeit not as long standing or even particular sturdy one.  While we all want to talk about multiverses and strange doctor men, first I gotta get my notes out there to you on not only the latest Fantastic Beasts film, Secrets of Dumbledore, but also the middle less than stellar entry, The Crimes of Grindelwald, and of course the original.  So let's take a trip all the way back to 2016 when we were just excited for Eddie Redmayne and a new Harry Potter/Wizarding World movie.  These may not be perfect, but I have a soft spot for all three, especially when Jude Law is on screen or any of the three actors in their take on Grindelwald.  And of course, Dan Fogler is a champ in these and brings so much fun to this period-piece historical fiction franchise that while I want five movies, will most likely be done at three, just hopes and dreams like the Ayer Cut, the Snyderverse, and the 6 hour Andy Muschietti cut of It!  But let's take a look at all three of these, and see the good, and yes, the bad, of them.  And of course let's chat on them all on social @NickNackMovies or @NickNack_IC on Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Letterboxd!

It's been four years since this film came out, and rewatching it now - it's great? Our discussion runs through a dozen improvements and recalibrations that make this matured, focused sequel so much more effective than its predecessor. We debate the believability / convenience of "fantastic beasts" being tied to each new development of the plot. Cam analyzes Grindelwald's politics and the vague, veiled, faux-inspirational salesmanship of fascism. Maggie tries to figure out what, if anything, the Leta Lestrange and Nagini subplots accomplished. Then we come together to absolutely, 100% reject the big Creedence / Dumbledore reveal and explain why it's just another chess move from Grindelwald, the guy who the entire rest of the franchise establishes as a "silver-tongued" master manipulator who should never ever be listened to or trusted or believed.
