Sorry for the delay on this episode folks - October and November have been a lot. But, without further ado, here's Last Night at the Telegraph Club, episode two! Joined once again by Dr. Kai Chen, we dive right into Last Night at the Telegraph Club spoilers, starting with our feelings on Kath and Lily's relationship and the high-key stress of classroom makeouts. A wise person once said: "having fun is never hard when you've got your library card." To this precious adage, we'd like to add an additional locale for future fun consideration: the fictional Telegraph Club. In this month's feature, we decided to read Malinda Lo's phenomenal YA book Last Night at the Telegraph Club. We discuss the fantastic resources in the book (a bibliography! timelines!) along with the super-accurate-yet-still-deeply-compelling historical adventures of protagonist Lily Hu. While trying to dodge accusations of Communism, keep up her high math grades to participate in the space race, AND help a friend win Miss Chinatown, Lily catches feelings for her classmate Kath. The National Weather Service prediction is for rain and snow before 9 a.m. and snow after. Looking at the day as a whole, the chance for precipitation appears to be most likely in the evening, especially between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m.The high temperature will be around 37 degrees.Penguin Random House, the Iowa State Education Association and some bestselling authors are suing the state of Iowa over a new law that bans books with sexual content from public school libraries, arguing the law violates First Amendment free speech rights. The publishing giant filed the lawsuit in federal court Thursday, naming Iowa State Board of Education President John Robbins, Iowa State Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow and a number of local school districts and officials as defendants.Bestselling authors including John Green, Jodi Picoult and Malinda Lo are named as plaintiffs. An anonymous high school student and a parent, along with three teachers, also joined the lawsuit. It is the second lawsuit filed this week against the law. Iowa Safe Schools, an LGBTQ advocacy organization, along with the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, filed a separate federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging the law.According to reporting from the Associated Press, U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, was choking on food during a luncheon Thursday when fellow Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky performed the Heimlich maneuver on her.The Kentucky senator has some medical experience, as he formerly worked as an eye doctor. The incident occurred during a closed-door Republican lunch in the U.S. Capitol. Shortly after, Ernst posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to thank Paul. Ernst joked that she was choking on “woke policies” from Democrats. All five ousted members of the Benton County Board of Health, who were let go without warning in October, are suing the county and its Board of Supervisors for violating Iowa law by going into improper closed sessions leading up to the terminations. The board's former members contend the county supervisors didn't have any public meetings where they discussed terminating the health board or disbanding the panel, which would be required under Iowa Code Chapter 21, according to the petition. The health board, whose members are appointed by the supervisors, oversees public health services in the county. For 29 years, those services were provided under an agreement with Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. But last spring, the hospital ended that agreement effective in June.According to the petition, the board terminations were connected to a county-based medical system the board proposed as an alternative — and that the supervisors had approved. The lawsuit asserts that system came with a higher price tag, but the supervisors blamed the health board for the expense,.

Who wouldn't want a fairy godmother to solve our problems with the flick of a magic wand? We know that's not a healthy fantasy and yet, fairy godmothers aren't going away. In fact, they've been proliferating in contemporary fantasy novels and reinterpretations of Cinderella. But they don't look or act like you might expect. I talk with Butler University lecturer Jeana Jorgensen and PhD student Abigail Fine about the origin of fairy godmothers and why they're ripe for reimagining. And I talk with author Gail Caron Levine about her groundbreaking novel Ella Enchanted, which broke the mold on fairy tales. Featuring readings from Aliza Pearl. Jeana Jorgensen's latest book is Fairy Tales 101: An Accessible Introduction to Fairy Tales. In this episode we discussed Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron and Kissing the Witch by Emma Donahue. We have been hitting the books and hitting road & rails! Emily had a week-long vacation on Martha's Vineyard and read a ton. She also visited Bunches of Grapes bookstore and FOUR libraries on the island – West Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and Edgartown. Chris attended a virtual event through the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library with Raymond Clemens who shared some of the earliest maps in their current exhibition, The World in Maps, 1400-1600. Check out the link in our show notes to watch Ray's presentation. We also had two delicious Biblio Adventures together. The first was a literal Couch Biblio Adventure where we sat on the couch at Book Cougars HQ and ate pizza while watching Malinda Lo's event at Simmons University. Her YA novel LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB was this semester's joint read at Simmons. Days later we were riding the rails to meet Aunt Ellen at Grand Central in Manhattan. After hugs and a pit stop, we took the subway to Brooklyn where we spent the day walking around and experiencing bookish adventures and culinary delights. Stops included: The Center for Fiction, Smith Street Bagels, Books Are Magic, the Brooklyn Public Library at Carroll Gardens, and La Vara, where we were joined by Aunt Ellen's partner Chris. We topped off the day with an author event and saw Maggie O'Farrell talking about her new book, THE MARRIAGE PORTRAIT, at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church. It was a perfect day. We even had time to grab some pastries from Magnolia Bakery before boarding the train home. Lots of books, good food, and great company. Phew, this is a long episode blurb and we haven't even mentioned any books yet! We'll list our “Just Read” titles: CANNERY ROW – John Steinbeck THE FALL GIRL – audiobook narrated by Marcia Clark and Cathy LePard SMALL GAME – Blair Braverman SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE – Claire Keegan MAD WOMEN'S BALL – Victoria Mas (translated by Frank Wynne) LIBRARY GIRL: How Nancy Pearl Became America's Most Celebrated Librarian – Karen Henry Clark (illustrated by Sheryl Murray) DARK RIVERS TO CROSS – Lynne Reeves release date 11/8/2022 MISS GRIEF AND OTHER STORIES – Constance Fenimore Woolson (edited by Anne Boyd Rioux) OPEN WATER – Caleb Azumah Nelson LOVECRAFT COUNTRY – Matt Ruff THE SALT PATH – Raynor Winn (audio) THE LUNAR HOUSEWIFE – Caroline Woods If the blurb is long, you know the episode is long, too, but stick around to the end (or fast forward if you're crunched for time) to listen to our conversation with writer, graphic artist, English professor, and athlete KELCEY ERVICK. Her new graphic memoir THE KEEPER: SOCCER, ME, AND THE LAW THAT CHANGED WOMEN'S LIVES is fantastic! We give it four paws up. Check out this wonderful blurb from another graphic memoirist you may have heard of: “The Keeper is a triumph! Kelcey Ervick's rollicking visual storytelling makes this information-packed lesson in women's sports history both hilarious and surprisingly moving. Do not be deceived by her loose, exuberant drawings—the level of writerly control at play in this beautiful book is prodigious.” - Alison Bechdel, author of the New York Times bestselling Fun Home and The Secret to Superhuman Strength One more thing and then we're putting our noses back into our books! Reminder that our current readalong book is MURDER ON THE RED RIVER by Marcie R. Rendon. Please email us (bookcougars@gmail.com) if you would like to participate in the Zoom conversation on Sunday, December 4th at 7 PM (ET). We also have a discussion thread over on Goodreads.

Another interview episode for you all in the feed today, this time Leigh sat down with author Malinda Lo about her writing, her interest and research into queer history, and the trajectory of queer literature since her first published book in 2009.  Her award-winning novel Last Night at the Telegraph Club is a queer historical fiction coming-of-age story set in 1954 San Francisco, following Chinese-American teenager Lily Hu as she discovers her queer identity, falls in love with classmate Kath Miller, and sneaks out to the Telegraph Club, a lesbian bar humming with life and new experiences. We dive into the research and real-life queer San Francisco scene Lo explored to create the world of Last Night at the Telegraph Club, as well as her newest book, A Scatter of Light, a companion novel set against backdrop of the first major Supreme Court decisions legalizing gay marriage. Episode 6 of our 3rd season- in which we discuss hot takes about reading theory, fanfiction, the split attraction model, sex work, and tumblr queers. Sunny reads some excerpts from Caliban and the Witch by Sylvia Federici to make some points about Marxist feminism. Renaissance has finally effectively forced Sunny into watching Phoebe Waller Bridge's TV series Fleabag, because there's been a recent internet phenomenon of people talking about being in their "Fleabag era." Clearly, media literacy is something many people lack. In return, Sunny forced Renaissance to read Last Night At The Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo, a young adult historical lesbian romance novel. Renaissance recommends the new Disney animated movie Encanto (we love to hate on Lin-Manuel Miranda- as we should) in the vein of generational family stories, and Sunny recommends the We Set The Dark On Fire duology by Tehlor Kay Mejia in the vein of sapphic YA novels.
