What up Fellas!

Are we alone in the universe? It's a fundamental question for Earth-dwelling humankind. Are there other worlds like ours, out there somewhere? In Hidden in the Heavens, Jason Steffen, a former scientist on NASA's Kepler mission, describes how that mission searched for planets orbiting Sun-like stars—especially Earth-like planets circulating in Earth-like orbits. What the Kepler space telescope found, Steffen reports, contradicted centuries of theoretical and observational work and transformed our understanding of planets, planetary systems, and the stars they orbit. Kepler discovered thousands of planets orbiting distant stars—a bewildering variety of celestial bodies, including rocky planets being vaporized by the intense heat of their host star; super-Earths and sub-Neptunes, with properties simultaneously similar to and different from both Earth and Neptune; gas giants several times the size and mass of Jupiter; and planets orbiting in stellar systems that had only been imagined in science fiction.‎Published by: Princeton University PressBuy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://www.wellingtonsquarebooks.com

Party-starting stompers from a crossover star. Even if you've never met Adam Longman Parker, AKA Afriqua, you can get to know him pretty well through his music. His lyrics ("Would you house me in a house, would you house right in my mouth?" from "Dr. House"), track titles ("Wagwan Bhagwan?") and cover art exude a charmingly cheeky demeanour that makes his music personable. It helps that his latest records are absolute smashers–funk bombs with jacked beats and bouncy grooves. Once ensconced in the minimal world, the Virginia-born artist gravitated towards Miami bass, Midwest house and zesty techno before the pandemic. Thankfully so: his recent discography combines Moodymann's slinky swagger with The Neptunes' killer sense of rhythm. Just like those legendary acts, Parker carries weight in both the underground and mainstream—he's released with Tomorrowland label CORE Records and DJ'd at Ibiza superclubs, while still appealing to more headsy crowds. His career expansion hasn't cost him his principles, either. A champion of Black history and culture, the classically-trained pianist infuses overlooked Black musical traditions like psyfunk into his work. Coloured, his debut full-length, was a tribute to what he called the "Black musical tree." "Genre is just temporary housing," the now Berlin-based producer noted in a recent Instagram post. That mentality informs his RA Podcast. From '90s-inspired house and luxurious harp melodies to some of his originals and even a "Satisfaction" remix, it's a celebration of unpretentious, feel-good music. Put simply, it slaps—hard. @afriqua Read more at ra.co/podcast/972

Pharrell Williams is a Grammy-winning songwriter, producer, and performer. Getting his start in music alongside Chad Hugo as the production duo known as The Neptunes in 1992, Pharrell has produced chart-topping hits for artists including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Snoop Dogg. He has co-composed the music for the Despicable Me film franchise, including hit “Happy,” which became the best-selling song of 2014 and earned Pharrell an Oscar nomination. Pharrell's collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and Gwen Stefani, alongside his work as a solo artist and frontman for alternative band N.E.R.D., have solidified his reputation as a creative force in the music industry. With 13 Grammy wins and two Oscar nominations, Pharrell continues to progress the sounds of post-new jack swing, R&B and rap, and pop.  Currently, Pharrell serves as the creative director of Louis Vuitton, and he has recently announced his role as a co-chair for next year's Met Gala alongside Lewis Hamilton and Anna Wintour. Pharrell Williams is—well, let me just say, he's a big reason why Song Exploder exists. He's a singer, songwriter and producer, and in the 90s, when I first heard the work that he was doing with the Neptunes, which was his production duo with Chad Hugo, it blew my mind. It made me want to know where those sounds came from and where those ideas came from. Pharrell has won 13 Grammys. He's been nominated for two Oscars. He's produced iconic songs for Kendrick Lamar, Britney Spears, Clipse, Gwen Stefani, and so many others. And on his own, he's made songs like “Happy,” the giant hit for Despicable Me that was the best-selling song of 2014. And now, there's a movie about his life called Piece by Piece. But it's an animated Lego film. For this episode, I talked to Pharrell about the title song from Piece By Piece. So, coming up, you'll hear how Pharrell built that song, including a first draft that never saw the light of day. You'll hear how he built “Piece by Piece” by programming it, on his own, with MIDI instruments, and then adding and replacing those parts with other musicians, including the high school marching band that he used to play in. For more, visit songexploder.net/pharrell.

An album that was seminal for John and one he had tried to get on the show forever, we take a long look at N.E.R.D.'s debut album "In Search Of...", an album that is as horny as it is confusing. The Neptunes were on an insane run in this time period, and so stepping away from that to make a nu-metal-adjacent rap-rock album with a high school friend who was originally known as just a guy who danced at their shows was certainly a choice. And there's a lot of strange choices here, from choosing a Minneapolis rock/soul band called Spymob as their backing band (who Pharrell found by hearing a demo and immediately declared they were the best band in the world) to an appearance by a guy named "Lee Harvey" who never appears on any recorded thing again ever and no one knows who he is to the deeply, deeply, sleazy horniness of the lyrics, it's a wild ride and an album that couldn't have existed in any other time period. Plus, you know the Pharrell quotes are insane. It's a fun one. If you want some more fun ones, head on over to our Patreon, where $4/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every month. The types of planets you have as neighbors may depend on your neighborhood. The planets discovered in our region of the Milky Way Galaxy come in just about every variety: hot Jupiters, super-Earths, mini-Neptunes, lava planets, ocean planets, and others. But that may not be the case for other parts of the galaxy. As an example, there appear to be almost no super-Earths or mini-Neptunes outside the Milky Way's disk. The disk is about a hundred thousand light-years wide, but only a few thousand light-years thick. The Sun moves up and down within the disk, but never leaves it. But the orbits of many other stars are much more tilted than the Sun's. These systems move above and below the disk like horses bobbing on a merry-go-round. A recent study found that these stars have almost no super-Earths or mini-Neptunes, which are common in our region of the galaxy. Super-Earths are dense and rocky, like Earth, but a few times more massive. Mini-Neptunes are a bit heavier still — slightly less massive than Neptune, the smallest of the Sun's giant planets. Scientists aren't sure why these types of planets are missing in the Milky Way's outer precincts. Perhaps their star systems didn't have enough raw materials for making such planets. Or maybe their systems have kicked out such planets. Or it could simply be that those kinds of worlds are harder to find — perhaps still awaiting discovery in their far-away neighborhoods.
