How To Rekindle Your First Love for God

Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2025 36:30

Episode Summary: Today, we're exploring a topic that feels counterintuitive but profoundly transformative: "How to Rekindle Your First Love.” Together with Pastor Jessica Van Roekel, we’ll examine why this is important, how it helps us live our lives in Christ, the warning signs of losing it and how to get back to it. We’ll offer biblical wisdom, personal stories, and practical insights to help you embrace joy as a choice, a fruit of the Spirit, and a testament to God’s faithfulness. Quotables from the episode: Search for identity and purpose can only be found in our personal relationship with God. We cannot chase Dr. Michelle’s experience with God, my experience with God, or your pastor’s experience with God. We gather corporately for worship services, but the rest of the week, we “gather” with God as an individual. We must seek our own revelation of his love for us, who we are IN him and TO him. Life confuses, distracts, or points us to look at the world or church leaders for insight into ourselves. Ultimately, Christ reveals himself and will return to set things right. No more broken hearts or tears. All hope will be fulfilled. All promises will be kept. The book of Revelation uses imagery to describe the end of time, but the letters to the churches at the beginning of the book are easy to understand. Christ’s purpose for the letters are to challenge, encourage, warn, and build up believers and churches throughout history. The letter’s values for us today includes: a revelation of what Christ loves and values along with what he hates and condemns. They also give us a clear statement about consequences for disobedience and spiritual neglect along with rewards for spiritual alertness, diligence, and faithfulness to Christ. They also provide the standard for any individual or church to judge their true spiritual condition and provide an example of Satan’s methods for attacking and working against the church or individual Christian. The Christians in Ephesus were complimented for: toil, patient endurance, separateness from evil, pursuers of truth, bearing up for the Lord’s sake, not grown weary. They were criticized for losing their first love. The first love is defined as: commitment to the original love, truth, purity, and power of Jesus and his original revelation. Our first love protects and helps us live the way Jesus calls us to. Our first love protects us because it helps us avoid sin, prevents us from running after false teaching, and helps us not forsake Jesus. But the consequences of losing our first love means we forget about loving the hurting, loving our fellow siblings in Christ, and about our own lost, wretched nature before we gave our life to Christ and his Lordship. We can lose our first love through spiritual distraction, loneliness, weariness, focusing more on the battle rather than our Victor, listening to other voices, and allowing religious actions to replace relationship. But God gives us warning signs. Let’s go through the warning signs: delight in something/something else more than God; lacking of longing for prayer and Bible reading; don’t think about God throughout the day; claim to “be human” to excuse behaviors/attitudes; and lack of cheerful giving or service. There’s more: treating other Christians with more judgment than kindness, view Christ’s commands as restrictions to happiness, striving for mankind’s acclaim, allowing fears to control decisions to share the Good News of Christ, refuse to give up an activity that displeases God, complacent to sinful attitudes around you, and unwillingness to forgive. To rekindle our first love, we choose to remember God’s love, his faithfulness and our initial love for him. We can remember what he saved us from and how we were before we welcomed him into our lives. The second way to rekindle our first love is to REPENT. Jesus, our High Priest, stands ready to forgive us if we would turn and come to him. We need to admit we’ve lost it, stop ignoring the warning signs and bring our “spiritual” care into the “mechanic” for service. He stands waiting for us and we don’t need to be ashamed or put undue pressure on ourselves. The third step is to RETURN. Return to where you lost it. Don’t try to be a mile ahead of where you use to be. Go back and begin again with renewed love for God. Don’t beat yourself up for letting your love for God grow cool. Remember you’re not alone, remember God is for you and loves you. Repent and return. Scripture References: Revelation 2:1-5 To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. Jeremiah 29:13 “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” 1 John 4:19 “we love him because he first loved us.” Luke 7:36-50 Hebrews 4:12-16 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Jesus the Great High Priest Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” 1 Timothy 1:6 “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God.” Jude 20-21 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life,” Recommended Resources: Reframing Rejection: How Looking Through a Different Lens Changes Everything By Jessica Van Roekel Sacred Scars: Resting in God’s Promise That Your Past Is Not Wasted by Dr. Michelle Bengtson The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner AWSA 2024 Golden Scroll Christian Living Book of the Year and the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Christian Living and Non-Fiction categories YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises from God to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, AWSA Member of the Year, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Devotional category, the 2023 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 1 YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 2 Revive & Thrive Women’s Online Conference Revive & Thrive Summit 2 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 1 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 2 Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2020 Best Christian Living Book First Place, the first place winner for the Best Christian Living Book, the 2020 Carolina Christian Writer’s Conference Contest winner for nonfiction, and winner of the 2021 Christian Literary Award’s Reader’s Choice Award in all four categories for which it was nominated (Non-Fiction Victorious Living, Christian Living Day By Day, Inspirational Breaking Free and Testimonial Justified by Grace categories.) Grandpa Bill: is Going Deep on Hyperphantasia:Hyperphantasia, often described as having a "mind's eye on steroids," is a condition where individuals experience mental imagery that is exceptionally vivid, detailed, and often multisensory. It's not just about seeing pictures in your head; for hyperphants, these images can feel almost as real as actual perception. They might experience:Exceptional Vividness: Mental images possess a clarity and sharpness akin to real-world scenes. Colors are vibrant, textures are palpable, and details are readily accessible.Rich Detail: Hyperphants can often recall and generate images with intricate details, far beyond what most people experience. They might be able to "see" the individual leaves on a remembered tree or the specific patterns on a fabric.Multisensory Experiences: While visual imagery is the defining characteristic, hyperphantasia can extend to other senses. Individuals might experience vivid mental sounds (hyperacusis of the mind), smells (hyperosmia of the mind), tastes (hypergeusia of the mind), and even tactile sensations associated with their mental images.Effortless Generation and Manipulation: Creating and manipulating mental images often feels effortless and automatic for hyperphants. They can rotate objects in their mind, zoom in on details, and even create complex, dynamic scenes with relative ease.Strong Emotional Connection: The vividness of their mental imagery can lead to stronger emotional responses. Remembering a joyful event might evoke a more intense feeling of happiness, while recalling a negative experience could be more distressing.Enhanced Autobiographical Memory: Some research suggests a correlation between hyperphantasia and highly detailed autobiographical memory, as the past can be vividly relived through mental imagery.Potential for Creative Pursuits: The ability to vividly imagine can be a significant asset in creative fields like art, design, writing, and music.Distinguishing Hyperphantasia from Other Phenomena:Eidetic Imagery: While both involve vivid recall, eidetic imagery is primarily about retaining a near-perfect memory of a briefly viewed stimulus. Hyperphantasia is a more general and ongoing capacity for creating and manipulating vivid mental images, not necessarily tied to a recent external stimulus.Synesthesia: Synesthesia involves involuntary sensory crossovers (e.g., seeing colors with sounds). While a hyperphant might also experience synesthesia, the vividness of their voluntary imagery is a separate phenomenon.Lucid Dreaming: Lucid dreaming is the awareness that one is dreaming. While hyperphants might have vivid dream imagery, hyperphantasia is a waking-state phenomenon.#VisualDisturbances,#AlteredVision,#NeurologicalSymptoms,#BrainHealthAwareness,#TBI,#MigraineAura,#SeizureAwareness,#NeuroVisual,#SensoryProcessingIssues,#BrainInjuryRecovery,#CognitiveHealth,#Neurology,

New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope May 16, 2025 Day 5 of Week 7   Scripture – Mark 16:9-20   Prayer:  Heavenly Father, We come before you today in awe of your Word. Thank you for speaking to us through Scripture.  Help us commit to being grounded in your truth.  Help us make learning more about you a priority.  We get so distracted!  The world comes at us from all sides.  Lord, in these next few moments of silence, help us set aside our scattered thoughts and focus on you...In Your Name, Amen.   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, a Deep Dive into the Gospels and Acts.  Today, we finish the book of Mark.  Keep in mind that the text we read today was added on much later than the original Gospel text.  As we talked about yesterday, some of the church fathers weren't thrilled with Mark's abrupt ending and added some additional verses to make things have a nice neat resolution.  Of course, real life doesn't have nice neat resolutions.  Neither does Scripture because it's very, very real.   The text for today has Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene and then the disciples.  We can see that the author of these verses took text from other Gospels to write this.  He is essentially filling things in – a visit to Mary Magdalene, a visit to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and then a visit to the eleven.   There are quite a few issues with this text.  First, it says that Jesus rebuked the disciples for their lack of belief.  If we look at Luke 24, we find that Jesus appears to the disciples but does so with grace.  He shows them his scars, he ate with them, and he opened their minds so that they could understand Scripture.  But in this Mark text, Jesus seems almost angry with the disciples “stubborn” refusal to believe.  This is our first red flag.   And then things really get weird.  We begin to read about theological concepts that are unusual for Mark.  There seems to be a requirement of baptism for salvation – this isn't found anywhere else in the Bible.  Then, there is this statement about the ability to handle snakes and drink deadly poison; if done in the name of Jesus, then they won't be harmed.  Okay, that is terrible theology.  No where else the Bible does it tell believers that they are exempt from poison and dangerous snakes.  What's a bit crazy about this is that whole traditions have been created where snakes are handled in church – from one verse in a portion of text that was added well after the original Gospel was written.  The justification for snake-handling is that it is supposed to be a demonstration of faith.  Y'all, good Biblical interpretation is SO critical!   The last portion of the text is pretty straightforward and consistent with other Gospels.  Jesus ascends to heaven and sits at God's right hand.  He empowers the disciples to perform signs in his name.    Let's talk a little about solid Biblical interpretation.  The Bible is God's Word, it's authoritative.  It provides a framework for our life and whole worldview.  At the same time, it needs interpretation.  We can't simply pluck out a verse and drop it into our lives without looking at the author's intent, the context, and the original audience.  Plus, we have to recognize that we, as 21st century believers, bring a lot of our own presuppositions to the Scripture.  Whether we realize it or not, we bring our own learned ideas and cultural norms to the text when we read.    The Bible is the primary way that God has chosen to reveal himself to us.  I like to call it the inexhaustible word of God.  It's critical.  Hebrews 4:12 states, For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. The miracle of Scripture is that we can read it over and over again and God can keep teaching us, keep revealing new things to us.  Jesus is revealed to us on the pages of Scripture.   Reading the Bible regularly is the number one way we grow in our faith.  Why is that? It's not simply a book; rather, it's a unique collection of ancient documents, diverse in style and written for different purposes, but all revealing some piece about the nature of God. The more we read, the more we consume of God's Word, the more things begin to fall into place for us.  The fascinating thing about the Bible is that it arose in vastly difference historical settings, written to different audiences, over thousands of years.  Yet, it tells one continuous story.  It's absolutely amazing.  But a serious reading and understanding of the Bible requires wrestling with the context, the purpose of the text, the symbols, and the historical and literary setting. But it also means relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to guide our study and to make the Scripture come alive for us today.   In the case of Mark, we need to look at today's text as interesting but not authoritative.  These verses weren't in the oldest texts.  It appears that new concepts were added, things that don't seem to add up.  They simply don't sound like Mark.  While we need to read this and understand it, it isn't something I would ever preach from the pulpit.  Basically, we need to be careful here.  There won't be any snake-handling at New Hope if any of you were worried.    Psalm 119:105-106, Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it,  that I will follow your righteous laws.   We'll chat again on Monday.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

“AI is only as powerful as the data behind it. If you don't trust the inputs, you can't trust the outputs and that's where most companies get stuck. It's not enough to have automation or algorithms; you need quality, transparency, and alignment across your go-to-market motion. That's the difference between tech that looks smart and tech that actually drives revenue.” AI is everywhere but without clean data and strategic alignment, it's just noise. In this episode of Revenue Boost: A Marketing Podcast, titled, Smarter Tech, Sharper Targeting: Fueling Revenue with AI, Data Quality, and GTM Alignment, Demandbase CMO Kelly Hopping joins host Kerry Curran to unpack what it really takes to make AI work for B2B revenue growth. From smarter targeting to scaling with efficiency, Kelly shares how enterprise leaders can leverage AI-powered tools only when grounded in high-quality data and a clearly defined ICP. You'll learn why GTM alignment matters more than ever and how to avoid the pitfalls of disconnected tech stacks and generic automation. If you're building or optimizing your go-to-market engine, this episode is your roadmap to doing it smarter.

The English noun gospel comes from the Anglo-Saxon term godspell, meaning "glad tidings." It is translated from the Greek evangelion, which means "good message." Originally, the word was related to news of military triumph. –https://www.gotquestions.org/gospel-good-news.htmlWhile mainstream Christianity has a relatively narrow definition or view of the Good News, e.g., limited to the New Testament and only relating to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a broader, more scriptural perspective exists that is less taught, if taught at all.Didn't the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and others preach good news? What was their good news about? If the Good News is only about the death, burial, and resurrection of Messiah Yeshua, why did He teach and preach about it? What did He say is the Good News?Is the Good News about the Messiah, or is it of the Messiah? As is his usual practice, Rabbi Steve Berkson brings a more profound understanding to this topic by allowing scripture to define itself just as he has done in his other teachings.• Opener• Review - Colossians 1:21-23 - The starting point• Hebrews 4:6 – Something to enter into• Hebrews 4:2 – What do we do now?• Hebrews 3:1 – Comparing Messiah Yeshua to Moses• Hebrews 3:3 – We are of the House of Yeshua, if…• Hebrews 3:7 – Don't make the same mistake as them• Hebrews 3:11 – They shall not enter my rest• Hebrews 3:13 – The deceivableness of sin• Hebrews 3:17 – They didn't believe Him• Hebrews 4:1 – There's still a chance• Hebrews 4:7 – Today, if you hear his voice?
