Are aliens already among us? Are we even looking in the right way to find them? Renowned chemist, molecular visionary, and University of Glasgow Regis professor Lee Cronin joins Mayim and Jonathan to explore the science behind alien life, consciousness, and the very definition of biology itself. Known for his groundbreaking work in assembly theory and abiogenesis, Dr. Cronin dives deep into the possibility of non-carbon-based life, why the Fermi Paradox might be misleading, and how we could soon detect extraterrestrial civilizations through the mathematics of complexity. As one of the world's leading voices in origin of life research, Dr. Cronin offers bold counterpoints to other guests on alien intelligence and reveals why he believes some exoplanets may already harbor advanced technology. He explains how chemical complexity could be the key to recognizing life in the universe, and why traditional astrobiology might be looking in the wrong place. The conversation also takes a turn toward the dark side of AI: how artificial intelligence may already be used by powerful institutions for dangerous, even covert purposes and why Cronin thinks we should rethink our fear of it. From the dream of building living machines to redefining what counts as life or consciousness, this episode is a mind-bending journey into the future of science, philosophy, and alien discovery. What if humans were planted on Earth as a sort of farm animal? Separated by the vastness of space on purpose in order to ensure that we never make contact with another pasture populated by our extraterrestrial farmers who make routine trips to check in on their prized stock. Could this be an answer to the famed Fermi Paradox? Could the farmers be Artificial Intelligence created by an ancient advanced alien species that has already taken over their creators? Today, we talk about it all. Welcome back to Infinite Rabbit Hole! Need more IRH? Visit: InfiniteRabbitHole.comFor exclusive content visit Patreon.com/InfiniteRabbitHole

Andrew Jackson started writing and illustrating since age twelve and never gave up the former but (thankfully for his readers) has stopped the latter! One of his earliest memories is of watching Star Trek with his dad and falling in love with the speeding ships, bizarre aliens, and the diamond glitter of myriad stars in that eternal blackness. Even now, as he explores the strange new worlds of family, fatherhood, and a career in retail, he's never lost his love for the stars. Counting authors such as Stephen King, Iain M. Banks, and Alastair Reynolds amongst his literary influences, he revels both in reading and writing rich, tangible worlds other than our own. Born too late to watch the Apollo missions but too early for interstellar travel he must content himself with dreams and the sad knowledge that he may never know what's out there. Is there anybody out there? Why aren't they talking? On walks down leafy lanes of his native Surrey, Andrew examines these questions. He likes to think he looked at a particular tree one time and pondered its age and almost otherworldly summer greenness and so was born his winning short story, Code L1. The story itself is an exploration of the Fermi Paradox –- the hypothesis that, if we have galactic neighbours, they should have called by now. Perhaps they've seen the darker sides of humanity and they're afraid of us coming out into the stars. Or perhaps, if they could, they'd tell us why they've been so quiet. Perhaps, it's best not to know… The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 42nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction HOLLYWOOD - Mullica Hill, New Jersey author Sandra Skalski is a winner in Sandra lives with her husband in suburban New Jersey. She recently retired from a career in chemical engineering, leaving her with actual time to write. When she's not writing, you can find her in the butterfly garden or traveling with her husband. Her greatest joy is spending time with her daughter, son-in-law, and her two beautiful grandchildren. HOLLYWOOD - Savannah, Georgia artist and Savannah College of Art and Design student Ms. HeatherAnne Lee is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest and was honored along with ten other artists and twelve writers at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 10th. Her art is published along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41 which was officially released on April 22nd 2025. HeatherAnne Lee was born in 2004 in Federal Way, Washington, and has lived across the US from Hawaii to New York and Vermont. HeatherAnne, or “Heather” to her friends, now resides in Savannah, Georgia, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Heather started drawing as soon as she could hold a crayon and never stopped, graduating from crayon to graphite to paint, and now primarily works digitally. Despite working on a screen, Heather holds to her painting knowledge, layering colors and textures on her drawing tablet, emulating traditional painting techniques in a digital medium. Heather takes much of her inspiration from the world around her, translating reality into epics and stories of dragons and knights. Heather always strives to push her work to the limit, working with clients to bring their stories to life through her illustrations. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 9 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book).

Have you ever felt tiny when contemplating the vast, 14-billion-year-old universe? Maybe you've wondered, “Is there another form of intelligence out there, pondering the same questions I am?” This thought often leads to another: “If the universe is infinite, there must be other forms of life! So why don't we have any proof?” Congratulations, you've just stumbled upon the Fermi Paradox! What is the Fermi paradox? Who is Fermi? What's the point of posing this paradox? Real Life: Devon would like to make one thing clear: queso is fine. Queso is acceptable. Just… not on everything, okay? Some of us still want to taste the actual food under the goo. That said, he did just survive a kid's pool party, so maybe he's earned the right to eat whatever the hell he wants — even fake grass, which he claims is "for winners." We're choosing not to dig into that statement. Steven, meanwhile, embraced the full Force of May 4th with joy, lightsabers, and an animated binge of Tales of the Empire — now fully released and featuring everyone's favorite dead-or-maybe-not-dead villainess Asaaj Ventress and the cowboy space bug bounty hunter Cad Bane. Is she still canonically dead? Who knows anymore. The rule is: if you didn't see the body dissolve, they can always come back. Also, Steven's forge is officially up and running. That's right — he's now a blacksmith. We're still waiting to see if this is a long-term thing or just a midlife crisis in steel-toed boots. Over in The Last of Us land, Season 2 Episode 4 dropped, and fans collectively screamed, cried, and probably tweeted GIFs because one of the game's most beloved scenes finally made it to screen — and yes, they nailed it. In a good way. Not like a fungal-mutant-jaw-through-your-neck way. Ben went to a roller derby bout in Irvine (report: chaotic and excellent), wandered the capitalist labyrinth that is Daiso, and wants to remind you it's Teacher Appreciation Week. So tell a teacher they rock, preferably with coffee, snacks, or a handwritten note of pure gratitude. Future or Now Ben brought us Writing Tools, a sleek, free, open-source app created by a high school student in Bangalore (hi, Jesai!) that gives Mac, Windows, and Linux users a system-wide writing boost via AI. It fixes grammar, summarizes content, and even helps you rewrite your angsty emails into something that won't get you fired. Bonus points for working offline and being featured basically everywhere. Teachers, students, chaotic creatives — check it out on GitHub. This also led us down the rabbit hole: Are LLMs bad? Short answer: not inherently. Long answer: come back next week for a full debate, complete with Devon's skeptical eyebrows and Ben's tech optimism. Devon watched Mickey 17, and the verdict is… “eh?” He appreciated the weirdness but didn't feel like the weird ever came together in a satisfying way. Unlike Parasite, which he still recommends, Mickey 17 left him shrugging with existential confusion, which is not his preferred flavor of sci-fi. Steven hit us with some mouse science: researchers have engineered gut bacteria that can detoxify methylmercury in mice, even when those mice are on a diet of bluefin tuna. The mice — and their babies — showed fewer signs of mercury poisoning. This means your sushi habit may one day come with a side of helpful microbes. Until then, maybe cool it on the sashimi. Book Club: This week, we read A Brief Dance to the Music of the Spheres by Michael Kurland (from The Best of Omni Science Fiction, 1983). It's a sleek, sharp short story that offers a fresh take on the Fermi Paradox: if there's intelligent life out there, why haven't we seen it? The story gives us a possible answer — one we won't spoil here, except to say it involves jazz, physics, and a little cosmic humility. You can read it on Archive.org or listen to the adaptation here. Next week: we're diving into Jorge Luis Borges' There Are More Things. Yes, it's a Borges horror story. Yes, we're terrified and delighted. Yes, Devon has thoughts. Got thoughts on queso, metal mice, or fictional villains who refuse to stay dead? Hit us up. And thank a teacher. Seriously. They've seen some things.

What if the best person to solve the mystery of alien communication isn't a SETI researcher or a radio astronomer, but instead a theoretical physicist trained in the deepest notions of physical law, symmetries, and quantum field theory? Well, today, I'm joined by Latham Boyle, a renowned theoretical physicist exploring the fundamental symmetries of the universe and developing new ideas to understand how the universe began. But his research goes beyond that—he's also tackling one of the greatest mysteries of all time: the Fermi Paradox. After explaining everything we need to know about symmetries, Latham shares his bold theory of a mirror universe, where the cosmos is symmetric across the Big Bang, and how that could explain the strange silence from the stars. We explore how this radical idea might reshape our understanding of dark matter, the origin of the universe, and why advanced civilizations might be using quantum signals we're simply not equipped to detect. Mind Matters News, January 8, 2023 http://bit.ly/3kwt70GThe discussion explores physicist Marcelo Gleiser's argument against the possibility of reality being a simulation. The panelists express skepticism, noting that such claims often rely on unfalsifiable assertions rather than scientific evidence. They critique the logic behind simulation theory, pointing out its similarities to religious arguments—particularly the claim that "we can't prove we're not in a simulation," which mirrors arguments for the existence of God. Teo dismisses the theory as an infinite regress problem, arguing that if a simulation exists, it would require a simulator, which would also need a creator, leading to an endless cycle of simulated realities. August finds the idea intriguing but remains unconvinced without tangible evidence, likening it to the Fermi Paradox, where people speculate about extraterrestrial life without direct proof. Phoebe criticizes proponents of the theory for their lack of critical thinking, comparing it to conspiracy theories like lizard people running governments. The conversation shifts to implications of simulation theory on concepts like free will. August highlights how the idea could challenge autonomy, likening it to debates over determinism. Teo humorously introduces "theocentric theory," proposing that the universe revolves around himself, poking fun at the egocentric nature of some philosophical arguments. Jason performs an experiment by telling everyone to raise their arms, joking that their compliance proves his control over them. Ultimately, the panelists find simulation theory entertaining but unconvincing. They agree that without evidence, it remains speculative fiction rather than a scientific hypothesis. The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.10.4 Phoebe Rose, Jason Sherwood, August and Mateo Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
The guests today are co-authors of a new paper in Science Advances titled: “A reassessment of the ‘hard-steps' model for the evolution of intelligent life.” Jennifer Macalady is a Professor of Geosciences at the Pennsylvania State University. Her research is focused on microbial ecology and evolution, and interactions between microorganisms and Earth materials like minerals and water through geologic time. Daniel B. Mills is a postdoctoral researcher in the Orsi Geomicrobiology Lab at The University of Munich in Germany. His research focuses on the co-evolutionary history of Earth's surface environment and eukaryotic life—a topic he approaches by studying modern marine organisms and environments. He also applies this research to the ongoing search for exoplanetary biosignatures and technosignatures. Shermer, Mills, and Macalady discuss the Hard Steps model of the evolution of intelligent life, the Drake Equation, the Fermi Paradox, the Great Filter, and the Great Silence. They also cover the Rare Earth hypothesis, major transitions in evolution, the uniqueness of humans, and the search for biosignatures and technosignatures.
In this episode, Jonathan and James tackle life's most pressing questions with their usual mix of humor, skepticism, and existential dread. Why do people trust AI to make decisions for them, even when it's clearly wrong? How is it possible that intelligent life should be everywhere in the universe, yet we've found nothing? And in perhaps the most unsettling discovery of the week—Egyptian mummies actually smell amazing. They also go on wild detours about the global chicken census (which James wildly overestimates), reminisce about pandemic-era absurdities, and consider whether aliens are just watching us like a cosmic reality show. Oh, and if you're wondering what a 2 AM walk with a dog and zero signs of human life feels like—it might just be the start of an alien abduction. Come for the thought-provoking discussion, stay for the revelation that maybe—just maybe—you should save a horse and bang a mummy.
In this episode, Jonathan and James navigate a mix of the absurd and the profound. They kick things off reminiscing about pandemic-era habits and the eerie realism of Superstore's COVID season. From there, they discuss a study showing that people are outsourcing their moral decisions to AI, much like a GPS leading them into a lake. This leads to a deep dive into the Fermi Paradox—if life is inevitable, where are all the aliens? Are they hiding, avoiding us, or have they all self-destructed in a cosmic tragedy? Things take a delightfully weird turn when they uncover research showing that ancient Egyptian mummies don't smell like dust and death, but rather pine and juniper. This revelation spirals into musings on historical smells, the underappreciated importance of scent in our daily lives, and—somehow—the best name for a nerdy stripper. It's a rollercoaster of logic, laughter, and lunacy, covering everything from the ethics of AI-driven warfare to the undeniable heartbreak of watching Godfather III. Buckle up.

Why haven't we found evidence of alien civilizations? Neil deGrasse Tyson sits down with astrophysicist J. Richard Gott III to talk chess, tachyons, and what the Fermi Paradox and Copernican Principle say about humanity's place in the cosmos. Plus, they rank super-genius movies.
