When it comes to tax and technology, our understanding of the implementation often ends at, “My clients upload their data to the cloud.” But there's so much more to technology in finance than just “the cloud.” There are many ways people in the tax profession can benefit from embracing today's revolutionary accounting technology. Sometimes tax professionals can be resistant to change, but embracing accounting technology doesn't have to be scary. On today's episode of the Taxgirl podcast, Kelly is joined by Jody Padar to talk about technology and what it can bring to the tax profession. Jody was the CEO and Principal of the New Vision CPA Group, a public accounting firm based in the Chicago area, for 14 years. Now, she is Vice President of Strategy at Botkeeper. She is a highly sought-after speaker and thought leader in the tax and accounting profession. She is the author of The Radical CPA: New Rules for the Future-Ready Firm, a book that sparked a movement within the accounting profession focusing on four tenets: cloud technology, social business, value pricing, and process. She has also recently authored a new book, Botkeeper for Dummies. Listen to Kelly and Jody talk about tax and technology: Some folks in the tax profession are more resistant to change than others. What is Jody excited about in regards to today's technology? Why embracing technology, especially during tax season, benefits clients as much as it does tax professionals. How technology can help tax professionals save time and become more organized. Do machine learning and artificial intelligence threaten job security in the industry? What might a career as a tax professional look like in ten years as accounting technology continues to evolve? The impact of encouraging small and medium sized firms to learn and use new financial technology tools. How to introduce technology into your practice with research, collaboration, and experimentation. Dealing with the feeling of “giving up” control of a task to a technology tool. How tax software can help tax professionals guide their clients to be more proactive. Tax programs can scan for outliers in decades of previous returns, preparing tax professionals and their clients for more informed financial conversations. Evolving technology in the finance world frees up young professionals from doing “grunt work” and allows them to truly begin their career in the field. Tax and accounting software is coaxing professionals to approach tax and financial statements in the context of data and projection. Do new accounting graduates have the skills they need in the changing industry? How to make all the new accounting technology feel less intimidating. More about Kelly Phillips Erb: Kelly is the creator and host of the Taxgirl podcast series. Kelly is a practicing tax attorney with considerable experience and knowledge. She works with taxpayers like you every day. One of the things that she does is help folks out of tax jams, and hopefully, keep others from getting into them. In this episode of Connection Loop, Dubb founder Ruben Dua sits down with Jody Padar. Ruben and Jody discuss Jody’s journey on LinkedIn and how she has amassed a huge following as “the Radical CPA.” Insights shared in this episode include the following: Seemingly “boring” topics or domains can attract huge audiences. While accounting on the surface may not seem like the most exciting field, Jody’s work shows that there is a large audience for it. Therefore, don’t let your “boring” field get in the way of leveraging social media to grow your business. Any type of business should anticipate new technological trends. Jody foresaw the rise of cloud computing and now believes that artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly important for CPA firms. Anticipating these trends can help you stay ahead of the curve and deliver more value to your customers. You must know your numbers. While it may seem boring or intimidating to you, knowing the numbers of your business can help you develop a better plan for business growth. Forecasts are also excellent tools for any business. They are connected to your P&L and balance sheet and can help you anticipate obstacles and opportunities ahead. Data feeds can be helpful, but you need to verify that data. Starting with good data means that you will get the most out of these helpful resources. Ultimately, this is a great conversation for business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, and those looking to learn more about accounting or entrepreneurship. We hope you enjoy the conversation! Jody Padar, author of “The Radical CPA” publications and founder of New Visions CPA Group, was our guest for this episode of Life In Accounting, a podcast production of Where Accountants Go! Ice Cream and Taxes Jody was influenced to pursue accounting in the same manner as many accountants – she had family in the industry. Her father had a tax practice, and she helped him out from a very early age. He knew how to motivate as well… every trip to get the returns processed at Computax meant a trip for ice cream as well! The reward at the end of the work was a strong influencer early in life, and so accounting was a career interest for Jody from early on. Unfortunate Circumstances Lead to Joy As her career progressed in public accounting during her first few years, she found that she enjoyed and was talented in the tech side of accounting. She was doing well pursuing a career with CPA firms, when she unfortunately got laid off from a firm due to needing to be out during busy season for the birth of her child. Obviously this didn't sit well with Jody, so she became determined to start her own practice and run it in a decidedly different manner. It's interesting how life turns out… it was exactly that difficult situation that helped propel her to the success she enjoys today. Life for The Radical CPA Currently Jody spends her time in many endeavors. She still owns the New Vision CPA Group, but due to having a solid team she has been able to pursue other ventures as well. She is the author of “The Radical CPA” books, hosts a podcast, and has just joined Botkeeper as an outsourced executive focused on helping them continuing to grow. She's definitely busy, but you can tell she thoroughly enjoys the mix and variety. Her happiness and excitement about her career comes through clearly in this podcast interview. We had a great time recording it. Other interviews you may enjoy: Donny Shimamoto and Sandi Smith Leyva To listen in on our interview with Jody Padar, please click on the player below:

Jody shares lessons and best practices as a transformational agent in an industry. We also discuss the importance of having a voice and knowing what that voice can do to create impact and change on an industry. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: 1:00 Guest intro: Joday Padar 2:18 Transforming an industry from an individual contributor role 2:40 Doing social media vs being a social business 3:10 Working around mommy schedule necessitated finding ways to network differently 3:24 Developing relationships online vs in person 4:46 640,000 followers on LinkedIn - what is the value of being a social business? 5:44 Thought leadership, change agent, community building, earned media, creating content 6:56 Writing leads to influence 8:04 Passion: "you can't build a following like I did if you don't like what you do 8:14 People want to be connected to that brand, to the radical CPA brand as well as to my following. 8:22 Passion + Authenticity led to Influence. Influence spawned growth 8:33 Merger considerations and lesson learned. Impact of being social on brand value 11:17 Most people don’t get that personal and that’s why I’m different 11:43 Being vulnerable 12:17 The radical brand - what it means to be “radical” and why this go to market with this brand 12:29 I've always been the person who doesn't fit in all ways. And it cracks me up because for as much as I don't fit in, I think a lot of people identify with that feeling of not fitting in. And that's why they connect to the brand radical cause they feel radical themselves. 13:09 The evolution From new business model with technology to artificial intelligence and bots. Radical is always evolving 14:37 Creating change in an industry resistant to change. Creating change across general lines - baby boomers 15:00 Disruption and resistance - "I didn't realize I was displacing people's power and money" 16:07 Disruption and monetization 16:18 Early adopters and influential champions who rallied w me 16:50 Leadership - mentors vs sponsors. Many people in the background who were older and wiser that knew it needed to happen and pushed me up 17:55 Selling transformation and change 18:29 Managing resistance to the status quo 19:00 Changing the status quo 20:15 What's hard is a lot of the stuff are your ideas and people start to steal them 20:27 If you really want to move a profession you have to get outside of yourself. The goal is to move a profession, not for me to be a star 20:42 Mindset: what it takes to being a conduit for change 21:21 We started using new tools ... 21:30 What I realized is that the business model was broken and that the next generation wanted to interact with their accountant differently 21:59 Technology adoption, Re-defining pricing models 22:00 We had to re-define what that customer relationship looked like. Once you re-define pricing you have to look at what that customer relationship looks like 22:24 How do you transform that relationship from being a transactional relationship to what today they would call a subscription based economy or a subscription based relationship in an accounting services standpoint? 22:49 So we can be all in because we're not worried about tracking time, keeping time, billing time 23:08 There were a handful of us, we were the ones who figured it out ourselves because we prototyped it, not because someone told us how to do it. We just started working with our clients differently and we found that they liked working with us this way. 24:12 They live in an old school model yet they are taking their customers through a transformational change. They didn't go through their own transformational change. 24:26 The fact that Fortune 100 firms want to buy me shows me that the bigger firms need to change 24:36 When you think about any innovation, it always starts in the small light 25:22 Transformation in healthcare, transformation in sales. Practice transformation. Modern selling 26:26 Knowing what a voice can do to impact an industry 27:04 For me it was never about changing an industry. I didn't realize it was me, but about just doing what was right, doing the right thing. And as it evolved now you look back and you think, wow, as an itty bitty firm like a small, small from the impact that I've been able to have on the profession 27:41 I mean ultimately I was mistreated and that chip on my shoulder got my fire going to say I got to make a change, I got to do something better. 29:59 Merger fit How to reach Jody www.botkeeper.com Twitter @JodyPadar LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jody-padar-18a9711/
We spend the bulk of each show trying to help accounting and finance pros become a little bit more future-ready – just a little more forward-thinking than they were an hour ago. And this week, we’re talking to an accounting and finance pro who already IS future-ready – or as future-ready as they come. Our guest this week is none other than Jody Padar, the CEO and principal of the New Vision CPA Group and the original Radical CPA. Jody is also an enthusiastic evangelist of all things new; any advancement that promises to make her firm more productive and to help her better serve her clients, she’s going to try it. Jody was one of the profession’s earliest fans of social media, she embraced cloud computing before cloud computing was cool, and she is deeply investigating things like A.I. and machine learning to see what they might be able to do for her firm – and more importantly, for her clients. It’s not just new technology, either. Jody also plays around with business model innovation and fixed pricing models. She is definitely pushing the edge of the envelope. In This Conversation We Cover: Why Jody, a Chicago-based CPA, is a member of the MACPA What it means to be a Radical CPA Why project management is the way of the future The first steps towards becoming Radical Incorporating social media into your business model Building innovation into the DNA of your firm Value billing & fixed-price models What diversity & inclusion means for Radical CPAs Jody’s vision of the future for this profession The First Step Towards Being a Radical CPA If you do just ONE thing to make your firm more radical and future-ready after listening to this episode, Jody thinks it should getting rid of the timesheet. That may offend your sensibilities and you probably won’t be able to do it in one fell swoop, but you can start small: just block of four hours once a week, or even once a month, to stop thinking about being billable and start thinking about what you can do differently. “Because if you have that mindset that you always have to be billable, you’ll never be innovative.” This doesn’t have to be implementing new technologies, either. Real innovation often consists of small changes to how we do things – it doesn’t have to be something huge or groundbreaking. We Need More Radical CPAs! We believe our profession NEEDS more people like Jody. To support that statement, we turn to some numbers that Barry Melancon shared during last week’s podcast. Barry cited a McKinsey report titled “Jobs Lost, Jobs Gained: Workforce Transitions in a Time of Automation.” That report estimates that by the year 2030, up to 375 million employees worldwide may need to switch occupational categories and learn new skills in order to remain relevant in their work. And that includes accounting and finance pros. Jody can be seen as a role model for all of that. She’s perfectly willing to try anything new if it’s going to make her smarter and give her firm a leg up on the competition, and most importantly, better serve her clients. “Same as last year” doesn’t fly in Jody’s firm. In fact, Jody has written the book (quite literally) on this profession – twice! Her first book was called The Radical CPA: New Rules for the Future-Ready Firm, in which she shares her story and a roadmap to move towards the Radical CPA mindset. Her latest is titled From Success to Significance: The Radical CPA Guide, and it’s a step-by-step handbook with hundreds of strategies, tools, tips, insights, guest experts, and case studies that will help any firm start moving towards a future-proof business model. In this episode, Jessica H. James, Marketing Manager for Webster Rogers, interviews Jody L. Padar, CPA, MST, CEO & Principal at New Vision CPA Group. In this episode, Jessica and Jody discuss the four tenets of future ready firms: cloud technology, social business, value pricing, and process.
In this episode of the Cloud Accounting Podcast, I'm joined by Jody Padar, CEO and Principal of the New Vision CPA Group, a public accounting firm based in the Chicago area. Jody is the author of "The Radical CPA," and has just published a follow-up called "From Success to Significance: The Radical CPA Guide."
Jody Padar is a radical CPA, the CEO & Principal of New Vision CPA Group, and the author of The Radical CPA: New Rules for the Future-Ready Firm. Later this year, she will release The Radical CPA 2.0. She’s been one of Accounting Today’s top 100 influencers in the accounting profession for 6 years, and in 2015 she was named a Managing Partner Elite. Jody represents the next generation of accounting professionals; the vanguard of the new movement of “digital CPAs.” She is trying to educate the profession on its natural evolution into the digital age… before they go extinct. Jody believes in embracing the cloud, social media, bots, and other highly advanced technologies and practices. She wants to alter how CPAs think about firm culture and serving their clients. So far, embracing technology and looking to the future is going very well for Jody. The average CPA firm grows 4% annually. Her firm, New Vision CPA Group, grew 25% last year – organically, or without acquiring anyone. On top of that, she expects to grow 25% again this year. Jody’s success isn’t surprising. She’s moving into the future with consumers, because that’s what CPAs have to do if they don’t want their firms to go the way of Blockbuster and Blackberry. She really doesn’t understand why more CPAs don't let the technology do the grunt work. CPAs are spending their time doing work that's not value added, instead of letting technology do it. Do you want to join Jody on the front lines of accounting? It all starts with a firm’s commitment to doing everything in one way, which is often a problem. The firm’s strategies, technologies, and processes need to be cohesive, from the top down. How each firm does this will vary, but it needs to remain consistent. Invest in yourself and the future. Growth may be a little bit slower in the short term, but if we don't invest in this change we're not going to be relevant in the future. If firms don't make changes, then nobody will want to buy them... including their managers, who they think are going to come in as partners. They're jumping ship and starting their own firms because it's so easy to start a firm today. Jody’s upcoming book, The Radical CPA 2.0., will focus on how you can build continuous innovation into your firm, so there's no longer change management – it's just continuous innovation as part of your firm. How do you have that culture of continuous innovation? How do you measure it? How do you manage it? How do you get your team members to do it? In the meantime, you can learn a lot more by picking up a copy of The Radical CPA or by signing up for her newsletter (where she gives away most of the advice from her books away, for free!).
