How soon should a startup start thinking about using thought leadership? Startups usually focus on customer acquisition, building their brand, and traditional marketing, believing that thought leadership is something that would be nice to have down the road —but not a must-have out of the gate. Turns out, that's not the best way to forge a business. Investing in thought leadership early can propel a brand to great heights. To explore the concept, we've invited Jody Padar to join us. Jody is known as "The Radical CPA," and is one of the few CPAs that has built a personal brand. She is currently the Head of Tax Strategy and Evangelism at April, a new tax program going to market through banks. We explore how Jody built The Radical CPA brand, starting 15 years ago when accounting, as a field, was going through major changes. She felt the tools she needed were not available, so she started blogging and writing to try to understand the changes taking place. She quickly gained a following that agreed with her thinking, accepting her non-standard methods and innovative techniques. Plus, Jody shares her difficulties with criticism, and how being open-minded allowed her ideas to sharpen and grow. Now that Jody is with April, we learn how her personal brand works to bring a deeper level of authority and expertise to April, defying all the expectations of a startup. In addition, her high profile plays well with potential investors, who trust Jody as the face of a new brand. This is an excellent conversation that illuminates personal thought leadership brands, and the power they can have when they partner with new (or experienced!) organizations. Three Key Takeaways: • It is never too early to share your opinion, take a unique stance, and start creating your own thought leadership. • Having an established thought leadership brand can allow you to justify higher fees and the ability to demand a premium when being acquired. • Thought leadership practitioners need tough skin when it comes to critics, and it is in their benefit to be open-minded and use criticism to refine their ideas.
“The world won't stop changing, and so tax law will become more complex and will have to evolve together with it”, says Jody Padar, Head of Tax Strategy and Evangelism at April.Tune in to this episode of Disruption Talks to hear more about Jody's strategy on making the taxation processes a more pleasant experience.Hit the play button and share the episode with your friends!

Sons of CPAs Podcast Season 2 Episode 9 | Recorded November 22, 2021 Real Life in the Accounting Profession (feat. Rita Keller) Shout out to our sponsors this week: Xero and Gusto Some of Rita's Wonderful Quotes: “I blog about CPA firm management, I've blogged every business day for nearly 17 years. The content out there is, and then I've got it, you know, by category.” “our partners, I think did it the right way. They let us manage the firm. And they took care of clients.” “I think that's right too many cooks in the kitchen, I always say. if you're going to have a managing partner, give him some power, and that's basically how we grew.” “We opened an office cold, which I do not recommend, never opened an office cold, cause it takes a long time to build up your visibility and your reputation.” “I don't know how many headaches I see with billing and collection, which to me that's a foundational issue that shouldn't be, nobody should be worrying about that.” “I think smaller firms like yours, what I've seen over the years are much more progressive than the larger firms” “you have to build that brand is what I tell my clients that on the college campus and in the community, you know, you want that brand to attract clients and who attracts employees.” “you should show your clients by example, how to run a good business. When it comes to billing collection, all that sort of stuff. They look to you to set the example and to tell them, but a lot of CPAs don't clearly define the expectation for clients. They just want to keep them happy.” shout out to: Gary Shamin, Mark Rosenberg, Chris Frederiksen, August Aquila, Allan Koltin, Gary Adamson, Jody Padar, and Shayna Chapman --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sonsofcpas/message

With so much change happening so quickly when it comes to automation in the tech space, it can be hard to keep up. But keeping up is a minimum requirement. Here today to talk with me about tech and automation innovation is my guest, Jody Padar. Jody is known as the Radical CPA, and enjoys disrupting the profession with innovative best practices for processes and technology. She also pioneered business solutions that would later become known as Advisory. Jody brings her expertise in AI and automation to her latest endeavor as head of tax strategy and evangelism at the recently launched company named APRIL. Highlights: — “April is a new technology company designed to disrupt the tax space. We're creating tax software that's going to be distributed through banks.” — “I don't think our software is ever going to replace the value of an accounting professional.” — “CPAs need to be aware that their job is going to change in the near future. So they have to figure out who they want to serve, how they want to serve them and how they can put the human back to serving them.” — “You have to figure out the value you're delivering and how you help your clients understand that there is value in what you're delivering because otherwise, they could just go to an automated service.” — “Accounting is ripe for automation because nobody's done anything in it in the last 50 years.” ***Want one piece of business strategy delivered daily to your inbox?*** Subscribe here: https://www.shethinksbigcoaching.com/subscribe-main-list Connect with JODI: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jody-padar-18a9711/ About April: https://www.getapril.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6889238594121158657/
Most accountants are so busy they barely have time to live their lives. If you run a remote accounting or bookkeeping practice, one reason you started that endeavor may have been because you wanted to strike a better work-life balance. Now, you have so much busywork to do, including filing reports, data entry, and filling out tax returns, that you are still working nearly 80 hours a week -- without much to show for it. Our advice? Let a machine help you. In the dawning age of artificial intelligence (AI), this innovative technology has its place in accounting, especially in the Cannabis accounting niche where you have enough to worry about while trying to keep your clients compliant amid so many changing rules and regulations. In episode 77 of The Cannabis Accounting Podcast, DOPE CFO founder Andrew Hunzicker, CPA sits down with Jody Padar, CPA and VP of strategy at Botkeeper, a full-suite AI accounting solutions company. She discusses the growing importance of adopting AI to innovate and transform bookkeeping or accounting operations and how removing this “grunt work” is the key to living your best life. Key points Andrew and Jody discuss include: How artificial intelligence (AI) can transform your Cannabis accounting practice and free up your life: whether you run a solo remote Cannabis accounting practice or a larger firm that serves many industries, AI can streamline your processes and help you focus on strategic advisory services or other high-level offerings (allowing you to strike more of a work-life balance while earning higher rates) The benefits of Botkeeper: Botkeeper is an AI and machine learning technology solution for bookkeepers and accountants that fully automates reporting and data entry to innovate your workday (as VP of strategy at Botkeeper, Jody talks about how Botkeeper will make life easier for both you and your clients) Why AI and Cannabis are a perfect match: people working in or with Cannabis and AI are early adopters, the pioneers who see greatness in budding markets (we'll talk about how Cannabis accountants entering the space can 10x their business goals with AI solutions) For more info on Botkeeper and how it can revolutionize the way you run your accounting firm or remote practice, check outhttps://www.botkeeper.com/. Since then, her experiences leading her own firm (New Vision) and the transformational #radicalcpa movement have inspired her to look for what's next.
When it comes to tax and technology, our understanding of the implementation often ends at, “My clients upload their data to the cloud.” But there's so much more to technology in finance than just “the cloud.” There are many ways people in the tax profession can benefit from embracing today's revolutionary accounting technology. Sometimes tax professionals can be resistant to change, but embracing accounting technology doesn't have to be scary. On today's episode of the Taxgirl podcast, Kelly is joined by Jody Padar to talk about technology and what it can bring to the tax profession. Jody was the CEO and Principal of the New Vision CPA Group, a public accounting firm based in the Chicago area, for 14 years. Now, she is Vice President of Strategy at Botkeeper. She is a highly sought-after speaker and thought leader in the tax and accounting profession. She is the author of The Radical CPA: New Rules for the Future-Ready Firm, a book that sparked a movement within the accounting profession focusing on four tenets: cloud technology, social business, value pricing, and process. She has also recently authored a new book, Botkeeper for Dummies. Listen to Kelly and Jody talk about tax and technology: Some folks in the tax profession are more resistant to change than others. What is Jody excited about in regards to today's technology? Why embracing technology, especially during tax season, benefits clients as much as it does tax professionals. How technology can help tax professionals save time and become more organized. Do machine learning and artificial intelligence threaten job security in the industry? What might a career as a tax professional look like in ten years as accounting technology continues to evolve? The impact of encouraging small and medium sized firms to learn and use new financial technology tools. How to introduce technology into your practice with research, collaboration, and experimentation. Dealing with the feeling of “giving up” control of a task to a technology tool. How tax software can help tax professionals guide their clients to be more proactive. Tax programs can scan for outliers in decades of previous returns, preparing tax professionals and their clients for more informed financial conversations. Evolving technology in the finance world frees up young professionals from doing “grunt work” and allows them to truly begin their career in the field. Tax and accounting software is coaxing professionals to approach tax and financial statements in the context of data and projection. Do new accounting graduates have the skills they need in the changing industry? How to make all the new accounting technology feel less intimidating. More about Kelly Phillips Erb: Kelly is the creator and host of the Taxgirl podcast series. Kelly is a practicing tax attorney with considerable experience and knowledge. She works with taxpayers like you every day. One of the things that she does is help folks out of tax jams, and hopefully, keep others from getting into them. Jody Padar, known as the radical CPA, began her “radical journey” 13 years ago. Jody was at an old-school firm with seven partners. As a young staff member, Jody was working an insane number of hours. When she became a mother, Jody knew the culture of the firm was just not right for her. That's when she decided to join her dad's firm. One of the first things he said to her was, “this is my practice, and you'll need to go find your own customers.” And that was the best advice he ever gave Jody. Today, Jody Padar is vice president of strategy at Botkeeper, Inc., an accounting software firm based in the Chicago area. As one of the profession's visionary thought leaders, Jody has redefined the business model of an accounting practice. Each episode of "Dear Accountant" is packed with actionable advice to help young finance professionals get ready for their next big thing! Hosted by Cecilia ”Cece” Leung, CPA. Cece is as smart as she is personable. For over two decades, Cece honed her professional skills in the corporate world working for powerhouse firms like JP Morgan, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Ernst & Young. As an Chinese emigrant, Cece also offers a real-world empathetic perspective of a female, minority business owner.
In this episode of Connection Loop, Dubb founder Ruben Dua sits down with Jody Padar. Ruben and Jody discuss Jody’s journey on LinkedIn and how she has amassed a huge following as “the Radical CPA.” Insights shared in this episode include the following: Seemingly “boring” topics or domains can attract huge audiences. While accounting on the surface may not seem like the most exciting field, Jody’s work shows that there is a large audience for it. Therefore, don’t let your “boring” field get in the way of leveraging social media to grow your business. Any type of business should anticipate new technological trends. Jody foresaw the rise of cloud computing and now believes that artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly important for CPA firms. Anticipating these trends can help you stay ahead of the curve and deliver more value to your customers. You must know your numbers. While it may seem boring or intimidating to you, knowing the numbers of your business can help you develop a better plan for business growth. Forecasts are also excellent tools for any business. They are connected to your P&L and balance sheet and can help you anticipate obstacles and opportunities ahead. Data feeds can be helpful, but you need to verify that data. Starting with good data means that you will get the most out of these helpful resources. Ultimately, this is a great conversation for business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, and those looking to learn more about accounting or entrepreneurship. We hope you enjoy the conversation! Jody Padar is the vice president of strategy at Botkeeper.com. Before that, she was the CEO and principal of the New Vision CPA Group, which is an accounting firm that is based in the Chicagoland area. She joined her father’s CPA firm about one decade ago and has added immense value through her expertise in areas like taxation, QuickBooks, and small business accounting. Along with her accounting expertise, Jody has been an early adopter of social media, generating large followings on platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn and even writing three books. Today, she has hundreds of thousands of followers and uses that platform to discuss the new ways of running a CPA firm. Want to learn more from Jody about growing your follower count on LinkedIn?
