In this episode we're talking about ethics in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Rumblings about the future of AI have been surfacing as well as questions about whether human biases are affecting the decisions AIs are making. Those questions are finding their way into our profession. A recent Accounting Today article reports a growing number of accounting service solutions are using AI for a wide range of applications. The accounting profession has spent $1.5 billion on this type of software in 2021 and is projected to spend $53 billion by 2030, according to a report from Acumen Research & Consulting. The Accounting Today article notes that despite this rapid growth, "too little attention has been paid to the ethical considerations that come with it". Sage's CTO, Erin Harris says in a quote, "The current issues are less to do with the accidental creation of a robot overlord and more about the insertion of human biases into the code". The main issue is not the technology in it of itself, it is our human biases impacting the way the technology works. Biometric Update, recently published an article listing the 6 key considerations for ethical AI in financial services:Fairness & biasTrust & transparencyPrivacyAccountabilitySecuritySocial benefitsThe author, Matt Peake, writes, "If just one of these fails, it can have series consequences for individuals and businesses". However, the upside is that there are groups developing AI committed to the betterment of our world. I speak with today's guest, Enrico Palmerino, Founder & CEO of Botkeeper, about the role of ethics in AI, the types of biases in AI, how we can protect ourselves and our clients from these biases, and what the future marriage of AI and human intelligence looks like. Today's Tax Tuesday episode is focused on bookkeeping. Toby Mathis hosts with special guest Troy Butler, Executive Manager of our bookkeeping department at Anderson Advisors, and some of the bookkeeping staff from Anderson including Patty, Ander, Matthew, Eliot, Dana, Trisha, Blanca, Landsey, Kiera, and Cindy, are all online today to help answer your questions. You'll hear our advice on things like what bookkeeping software to use, expense reimbursement and mileage, grouping your businesses using “classes,” and even some detailed information on how you can become an Anderson Advisors client and the services you'll have access to. Submit your tax question to taxtuesday@andersonadvisors. Highlights/Topics: If I request an EIN so I can open up a bank account for my disregarded single member LLC, do I have to file a tax return or can I somehow inform the IRS the EIN is for a disregarded entity? – Any EIN should be on “a” tax return, but doesn't have to have it's own return. If I paid for something on behalf of my C-corp and it didn't have enough funds to reimburse me, how do I account for it? – First of all, if you paid for something on behalf of your corporation, I would make sure that I'm submitting a reimbursement sheet. I would do that monthly where I'm putting together everything I paid for personally, putting it on a sheet, and submitting that to my company for reimbursement. Step 1 - Do it monthly or quarterly. Step 2 - You can have a revolving line of credit. If it's an IOU, it's a loan. It's a liability of the company. It would be an asset to you as the shareholder. What is the best way to record, handle reimbursement for business expenses that were charged on the owner's personal credit card to avoid giving the IRS concerns about the legitimacy of the business?" – Again, you would want to submit those charges that were business related on a reimbursement sheet. What you don't want to do is you don't want to put that credit card that's in my personal name on your company's books. That can be looked at as co-mingling. It's a business expense that you're getting reimbursed for. Can I deduct other courses I take that are general business-type classes, not specific to real estate investing, and if they are for the purpose of helping me build my business? – General business if it's you're improving your current lines of business. I don't see an issue with that. What is the smartest tax advantage way to pay the kids for helping the S-corp? Can I reimburse myself for the payments I have made to them from my personal account? – There are a couple of options here. I am a believer in payroll. The reason for that is if they're on payroll, if they make less than the standard deduction as employees, they're not required to file a tax return. You can also pay them by putting money in their Roth - they'll never pay tax, or do a 1099. How do I not pay taxes at the end of the year?- This is what everyone wants to know!! My reply is, either don't make any money, live on borrowed money, have someone else make the money, or buy real estate as a real estate professional which unlocks passive losses. I have a three-member LLC taxed as a partnership. The members want to take a distribution each of $100,000. How is that taxed and how is it recorded in the books? – That's not a taxable event. It's a distribution. That's an equity transaction. The $100,000 is not a taxable event. The taxable event is the numbers that come on that K-1 and say, you made profit of “X” or you made loss of “X”. How does the Anderson bookkeeping service integrate with the accounting service, et cetera? – We work very closely between teams! …we have full service monthly, or quarterly “virtual” service that uses QuickBooks. Virtual bookkeeping is $995 for a year for the first set of books and then $495 for each additional set of books. Can you please discuss some big-picture strategies to help with bookkeeping automation, AI, we should be considering? Botkeeper is one AI we've learned about. They can't do complex things. It's much cheaper to use a human being right now. Maybe that changes at some point. What is the best way to keep track of miles? MileIQ is an app, it works well and creates good reports. There is also a function within QuickBooks works reasonably well. And Timr is easy to use, but it is $100 a year Best software for doing bookkeeping? There are thousands, and thousands, and thousands of accounting softwares out there. Most of them do a pretty good job. We use QuickBooks online for all Anderson clients. I'm trying to figure out how to property log and transfer friends from the property LLC to the holding LLC and vice versa. (1) how to capture my personal mortgage loan into the property LLC and then to the holding LLC? – It's an investment expense that I'm going to show on my Schedule E, which is going to allow me to take that deduction against my rental income if it's real estate. (2) how to record all transactions from the property LLCs throughout the year and distribute to the holding LLC for tax filing. –Like Toby's saying, for each tax return that you file, you need a set of books. But if you have entities that are disregarded to a holding company, they can be within one set of books. If you have 10 properties, you're going to have 10 classes on one set of books, and it's all going to flow up. Before starting Botkeeper, Enrico's background was in automation, decision trees, and accounting, and he has a triple major from Babson College in quantitative methods, entrepreneurship, and strategic management. In this episode… Many entrepreneurs choose to bootstrap their startup businesses. The thought of relinquishing control can be daunting and may prevent them from getting venture capital funding altogether. As much as Enrico Palmerino likes to control his own destiny, his company's rapid growth meant he needed the type of financing required to continue to scale. He had a vision for the company's future and realized that being bootstrapped would hold him back and limit his growth. His desire to build the brand was the primary factor in his decision to get venture capital funding. In this episode of the Skunkworks Podcast, Eric Bourget interviews Enrico Palmerino, the Founder and CEO of Botkeeper, about the value of getting venture capital funding. They also talk about the influence of leadership styles, the difference between being a visionary versus an integrator, and the right time to transition to venture capital funding.

Most accountants are so busy they barely have time to live their lives. If you run a remote accounting or bookkeeping practice, one reason you started that endeavor may have been because you wanted to strike a better work-life balance. Now, you have so much busywork to do, including filing reports, data entry, and filling out tax returns, that you are still working nearly 80 hours a week -- without much to show for it. Our advice? Let a machine help you. In the dawning age of artificial intelligence (AI), this innovative technology has its place in accounting, especially in the Cannabis accounting niche where you have enough to worry about while trying to keep your clients compliant amid so many changing rules and regulations. In episode 77 of The Cannabis Accounting Podcast, DOPE CFO founder Andrew Hunzicker, CPA sits down with Jody Padar, CPA and VP of strategy at Botkeeper, a full-suite AI accounting solutions company. She discusses the growing importance of adopting AI to innovate and transform bookkeeping or accounting operations and how removing this “grunt work” is the key to living your best life. Key points Andrew and Jody discuss include: How artificial intelligence (AI) can transform your Cannabis accounting practice and free up your life: whether you run a solo remote Cannabis accounting practice or a larger firm that serves many industries, AI can streamline your processes and help you focus on strategic advisory services or other high-level offerings (allowing you to strike more of a work-life balance while earning higher rates) The benefits of Botkeeper: Botkeeper is an AI and machine learning technology solution for bookkeepers and accountants that fully automates reporting and data entry to innovate your workday (as VP of strategy at Botkeeper, Jody talks about how Botkeeper will make life easier for both you and your clients) Why AI and Cannabis are a perfect match: people working in or with Cannabis and AI are early adopters, the pioneers who see greatness in budding markets (we'll talk about how Cannabis accountants entering the space can 10x their business goals with AI solutions) For more info on Botkeeper and how it can revolutionize the way you run your accounting firm or remote practice, check outhttps://www.botkeeper.com/. When it comes to tax and technology, our understanding of the implementation often ends at, “My clients upload their data to the cloud.” But there's so much more to technology in finance than just “the cloud.” There are many ways people in the tax profession can benefit from embracing today's revolutionary accounting technology. Sometimes tax professionals can be resistant to change, but embracing accounting technology doesn't have to be scary. On today's episode of the Taxgirl podcast, Kelly is joined by Jody Padar to talk about technology and what it can bring to the tax profession. Jody was the CEO and Principal of the New Vision CPA Group, a public accounting firm based in the Chicago area, for 14 years. Now, she is Vice President of Strategy at Botkeeper. She is a highly sought-after speaker and thought leader in the tax and accounting profession. She is the author of The Radical CPA: New Rules for the Future-Ready Firm, a book that sparked a movement within the accounting profession focusing on four tenets: cloud technology, social business, value pricing, and process. She has also recently authored a new book, Botkeeper for Dummies. Listen to Kelly and Jody talk about tax and technology: Some folks in the tax profession are more resistant to change than others. What is Jody excited about in regards to today's technology? Why embracing technology, especially during tax season, benefits clients as much as it does tax professionals. How technology can help tax professionals save time and become more organized. Do machine learning and artificial intelligence threaten job security in the industry? What might a career as a tax professional look like in ten years as accounting technology continues to evolve? The impact of encouraging small and medium sized firms to learn and use new financial technology tools. How to introduce technology into your practice with research, collaboration, and experimentation. Dealing with the feeling of “giving up” control of a task to a technology tool. How tax software can help tax professionals guide their clients to be more proactive. Tax programs can scan for outliers in decades of previous returns, preparing tax professionals and their clients for more informed financial conversations. Evolving technology in the finance world frees up young professionals from doing “grunt work” and allows them to truly begin their career in the field. Tax and accounting software is coaxing professionals to approach tax and financial statements in the context of data and projection. Do new accounting graduates have the skills they need in the changing industry? How to make all the new accounting technology feel less intimidating. More about Kelly Phillips Erb: Kelly is the creator and host of the Taxgirl podcast series. Kelly is a practicing tax attorney with considerable experience and knowledge. She works with taxpayers like you every day. One of the things that she does is help folks out of tax jams, and hopefully, keep others from getting into them. Hot dog stands, energy drink distribution, custom ping-pong balls—Enrico Palmerino has run about every kind of business you can imagine. His ventures attracted him to data analysis, which eventually led him to found his current tech startup, Botkeeper, an automatic bookkeeping solution for accounting firms, powered by AI and machine learning. On this edition of Founders Journey, Enrico tells us about his early beginnings and how he ended up creating a lighting company in college that pulled in over $8 million in revenue by his senior year.
New technologies, such as cloud computing, have made entrepreneurship more possible than ever. But as more and more people are becoming CEOs and developers, fewer and fewer are becoming accountants—services that are sorely needed to make operations function. Enrico Palmerino encountered this problem with his own startup. “Our accounting department just couldn't keep up with the growth or the complexities of the business,” Enrico says. He eventually discovered a large part of the problem was the lack of technology solutions in this field. This led him to found Botkeeper, an automated bookkeeping service for accounting firms powered by AI and machine learning. On this edition of UpTech Report, Enrico discusses how he's using this advanced technology to give the accountants more time to focus on their clients.
Many factors contribute to the constant change in the accounting profession: technological innovation, evolving regulations and standards, and, yes, our current global pandemic. It is especially important for CPA firms to be prepared for change and be ready to manage it when the need for evolution comes. To discuss how best to handle change, we reached out to “The Radical CPA” Jody Padar, vice president of strategy at Botkeeper. To read the full transcript click here.

Jody Padar, known as the radical CPA, began her “radical journey” 13 years ago. Jody was at an old-school firm with seven partners. As a young staff member, Jody was working an insane number of hours. When she became a mother, Jody knew the culture of the firm was just not right for her. That's when she decided to join her dad's firm. One of the first things he said to her was, “this is my practice, and you'll need to go find your own customers.” And that was the best advice he ever gave Jody. Today, Jody Padar is vice president of strategy at Botkeeper, Inc., an accounting software firm based in the Chicago area. As one of the profession's visionary thought leaders, Jody has redefined the business model of an accounting practice. Each episode of "Dear Accountant" is packed with actionable advice to help young finance professionals get ready for their next big thing! Hosted by Cecilia ”Cece” Leung, CPA. Cece is as smart as she is personable. For over two decades, Cece honed her professional skills in the corporate world working for powerhouse firms like JP Morgan, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Ernst & Young. As an Chinese emigrant, Cece also offers a real-world empathetic perspective of a female, minority business owner.

You might have a great idea, a lot or a few decent customers, but scaling your business to another level is spine-chilling. It requires you to automate most of the business to grow at a faster speed. Automation technology can streamline mundane tasks, consolidates resources, and gives you the ability to focus your time, energy, and money on high-returning tasks that allow you to scale in an efficient manner. For startups or businesses, automation is the key ingredient to success. The point is that I know that you're a hustler and exactly that's why you deserve to know that if you miss on automation, you miss on scaling your business forward. It might require your immense effort, but you cannot overlook the power it comes with. Hence, in today's episode of “The Hustlepost Podcast”, I will share with you 5 things you need to automate in your business to grow and scale faster in the right direction. Major takeaways from this episode: Automation technology has the power to make or break your business. Most of the startups don't fail because of the terrible idea. They fail due to lack of planning and automation. They fail because of not being able to use their time to grow business and instead of wasting it on things which can be automated. The most basic automation you can use in your business right away is welcoming your new customers. Your customers spent their money and it's your duty to tell them that you've noticed their action. Let them feel precious through your welcome or thank you email/message when they make a purchase. Your business must not require you to sit for hours every day and create fresh content. That's where the automation in content creation comes into play. For content curation, use apps and websites like Stackla, keyword planner, Ubersuggest to find ideas which are trending. Or use Instagram hashtags to see what people are creating around your niche. For content creation, purchase Canva templates through websites like creativemarket.com and then create posts for your Instagram for the whole month in one go. For content scheduling, use tools like Buffer and get rid of the habit of devoting a few minutes every day to posting on your feed. Once you've figured out where you get customers from, you can then think about automating the process required to get customers. For example, Facebook, Google ads, Email marketing or a combination of all. Create an automated funnel, test it for a few days and keep it running on automation. Automate the tracking of your team performance. Who is doing “what and when” is something you should know. This will help you to assign the right roles to the right people when your business grows. Accounting is often one of the most feared parts of running a business. Hence, never miss on the relevance of automating it. It just seems to send business owners into a panicked frenzy. You can use tools like Xero, Botkeeper, etc. to keep a record of your daily expenses. But if you're still afraid, to begin with, automation, start slow and go step by step. As you become familiar with one tool, consider adding another.
In this episode of Connection Loop, Dubb founder Ruben Dua sits down with Jody Padar. Ruben and Jody discuss Jody’s journey on LinkedIn and how she has amassed a huge following as “the Radical CPA.” Insights shared in this episode include the following: Seemingly “boring” topics or domains can attract huge audiences. While accounting on the surface may not seem like the most exciting field, Jody’s work shows that there is a large audience for it. Therefore, don’t let your “boring” field get in the way of leveraging social media to grow your business. Any type of business should anticipate new technological trends. Jody foresaw the rise of cloud computing and now believes that artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly important for CPA firms. Anticipating these trends can help you stay ahead of the curve and deliver more value to your customers. You must know your numbers. While it may seem boring or intimidating to you, knowing the numbers of your business can help you develop a better plan for business growth. Forecasts are also excellent tools for any business. They are connected to your P&L and balance sheet and can help you anticipate obstacles and opportunities ahead. Data feeds can be helpful, but you need to verify that data. Starting with good data means that you will get the most out of these helpful resources. Ultimately, this is a great conversation for business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, and those looking to learn more about accounting or entrepreneurship. We hope you enjoy the conversation! Jody Padar is the vice president of strategy at Botkeeper.com. Before that, she was the CEO and principal of the New Vision CPA Group, which is an accounting firm that is based in the Chicagoland area. She joined her father’s CPA firm about one decade ago and has added immense value through her expertise in areas like taxation, QuickBooks, and small business accounting. Along with her accounting expertise, Jody has been an early adopter of social media, generating large followings on platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn and even writing three books. Today, she has hundreds of thousands of followers and uses that platform to discuss the new ways of running a CPA firm. Want to learn more from Jody about growing your follower count on LinkedIn? Byron Patrick is a chameleon of sorts, changing his specialty with the times and staying ahead of the curve. He’s a good friend of our host, Bill Sheridan, who met him in 2006 as the Director of IT for KatzAbosch in Maryland. He had just created a virtual office for the firm in an online virtual world called Second Life. Virtual space is a great place to teach and learn, and other platforms have come along since then and proved it right. Byron was thinking about this concept long before anyone else in the profession. He went on to co-found an organization that focused on remote work technologies and solutions in 2008, also well before remote work became a popular idea. He joined the Board of Directors for the Maryland Association of CPAs and eventually chaired that board during the 2013-14 fiscal year, becoming one of the youngest MACPA chairs ever in the process. In 2019, he joined the team at Botkeeper, which provides automated bookkeeping and accounting solutions for firms, as their director of pre-sales and solutions. In this conversation, he talks about automation, A.I., and what they allow firms to do that they can’t or haven’t thought about before. Listen as Jody Padar, CPA and Vice President of Strategy at Botkeeper, talks about how to have a winning tax season through the use of technology and streamlined practice management.
This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to solve the demand/supply gap in the accounting industry. My guest is Enrico Palmerino, CEO of Botkeeper.Enrico’s background has been in automation, decision trees, and accounting with a triple major from Babson College in Quantitative Methods, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Management. While in college he co-founded ThinkLite which automated lighting analysis, design, and manufacturing. ThinkLite grew from dorm room to 46 on Inc's 500 List. A a result of that, Enrico was ranked 2nd among America's Top 25 Entrepreneurs Under 25 by Bloomberg Businessweek. After successfully exiting ThinkLite, he invested in a small accounting firm, joining as the company's Managing Director, and helped grow it from 7 to 40 people in the 3 years. Beyond this he advises, consults and invests in several startups.Botkeeper caught my eye by its claim to create the future of bookkeeping, and this triggered me to invite Enrico to my podcast. We explore what’s inhibiting the accounting industry to transform, and why the combo of blending tech and people in the right way is the secret to a better future. We also discuss Enrico’s vision to what it takes to build a remarkable software business. Here are some of his quotes:There are two big problems that we're trying to solve in the accounting space:The one being, just there's a major shortage of people to do the work. The huge supply demand gap and by the numbers, at least in the US, you got exponentially more businesses forming year over year. And then if that wasn't bad enough, the other challenge you have is in many industries there's been this over amplification of all these little micro niche apps for the accounting sector. All those apps don't talk to each other, which means more siloed data sets that require more manual entry, and an unpleasant experience. So the big problem we're trying to solve is two things. It's, how do we automate as much of the basic pre accounting or compliance accounting and bookkeeping work? And then how do we consolidate the app stack [to] free up the limited supply of accountants that are out there, to do more critical thinking, consulting, advisory, and complex accounting.During this interview, you will learn three things:How, by looking at the big picture “app-stack” of our ideal customers we can find major opportunities for remarkable productivity improvementsThat to solve the shrinking workforce problem we see in many industries we need to approach the problem from a different angle to really solve it.How to orchestrate 3x growth in a market of “Late Adopters” by creating a pull effect. Byron Patrick, a CPA whose career has been built in technology, joined us for this episode of Life In Accounting, a podcast production of Where Accountants Go. Learning Accounting through Monopoly! Byron's was initially influenced to pursue accounting as a profession like many of us were – by taking a high school level accounting course. He also tells the story of one of his earliest memories regarding accounting – playing a game of Monopoly and actually creating financial statements as a part of the game. Through this experience, as well as becoming involved with Future Business Leaders of America, he realized he had a definite interest in the profession. Becoming the IT guy Byron's career was just starting in the late 1990's when computer systems were becoming more than just a single machine that was used for basic computations. Systems were being connected and integrated, and he had a natural talent for being able to troubleshoot office computer issues as well as understand how to structure those early networks. As he got more and more involved in systems work, it left less time for the core audit work that he had initially been hired for. Through a transition to a new firm, and that firm recognizing both his talent and their need, he became the full-time IT Director at a regional CPA practice. The Early Cloud Byron's interest in systems led him to co-found a business called Simplified Innovations where they focused on installing systems in other accounting firms. Over an 8-year period, they grew the business to be servicing over 650 end users with only four internal staff members. The infrastructure they built to do this was a predecessor to what we refer to as the cloud in today's terminology. Botkeeper and The Future After a great run with his own firm, he decided to sell his interest to his partner and move on to new challenges. Most recently, Byron has joined botkeeper, a fast-growing accounting technology company that just received additional funding from the Google organization. One of the items you need to make sure you listen closely for in the audio interview is our discussion of what the future accountant looks like from a day-to-day perspective. Our profession definitely isn't going away by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, we are becoming more and more important as businesses need individuals not to just prepare the numbers, but to help interpret them as well. We are becoming more of the translators, or advisors, that we all strive to be in the first place, as opposed to having to handle the more mundane duties such as data entry and other similar tasks. It is a great and exciting time to be in the profession. And if that wasn't enough, we also get into a short discussion of Byron's CPA tattoo… that was a first for the show! Jody Padar, author of “The Radical CPA” publications and founder of New Visions CPA Group, was our guest for this episode of Life In Accounting, a podcast production of Where Accountants Go! Ice Cream and Taxes Jody was influenced to pursue accounting in the same manner as many accountants – she had family in the industry. Her father had a tax practice, and she helped him out from a very early age. He knew how to motivate as well… every trip to get the returns processed at Computax meant a trip for ice cream as well! The reward at the end of the work was a strong influencer early in life, and so accounting was a career interest for Jody from early on. Unfortunate Circumstances Lead to Joy As her career progressed in public accounting during her first few years, she found that she enjoyed and was talented in the tech side of accounting. She was doing well pursuing a career with CPA firms, when she unfortunately got laid off from a firm due to needing to be out during busy season for the birth of her child. Obviously this didn't sit well with Jody, so she became determined to start her own practice and run it in a decidedly different manner. It's interesting how life turns out… it was exactly that difficult situation that helped propel her to the success she enjoys today. Life for The Radical CPA Currently Jody spends her time in many endeavors. She still owns the New Vision CPA Group, but due to having a solid team she has been able to pursue other ventures as well. She is the author of “The Radical CPA” books, hosts a podcast, and has just joined Botkeeper as an outsourced executive focused on helping them continuing to grow. She's definitely busy, but you can tell she thoroughly enjoys the mix and variety. Her happiness and excitement about her career comes through clearly in this podcast interview. We had a great time recording it. Other interviews you may enjoy: Donny Shimamoto and Sandi Smith Leyva To listen in on our interview with Jody Padar, please click on the player below:

Sam Saltis moved to Boston from Australia to start his second company, Core dna. Sam spent over ten years working for one of Australia’s largest banks before getting his MBA and deciding soon after, in 2000, that he was going to start his own business. It started off as a consulting business that then morphed into building websites for businesses. That company, bwired, continues in Australia as CoreDNA was started as a separate company in Boston after seeing the demand for the product getting larger than the services business, and the ability for the SaaS product to scale. Core dna allows you to manage all of your digital properties and applications from one dashboard that is production ready and without the need to re-platform in the future. In this episode, Sam shares amongst other things: Why he chose Boston to start Core dna What he calls startup 1.0 How he got through those moments of self-doubt The benefits of SaaS The effects of dynamic content The risks of over designing the UX His advice to first-time founders What makes the Boston startup scene unique Links from this episode: Botkeeper SaaStr Shopify Snapchat WeWork If you liked this episode: Follow the podcast on Twitter Subscribe on iTunes or your podcast app and write a review Get in touch with feedback, ideas, or to say hi: nic {AT} startupbostonpodcast [DOT] com Music by: Broke For Free
