In this conversation, Nickademus shares his journey into ultra running, his interest in sports psychology, and the importance of mental training in the sport. He discusses the challenges he faced in running 100 miles and how his experiences led him to pursue a career in sports psychology. Nickademus also talks about his coaching business, Lightfoot Coaching, and its guiding philosophy. He compares European and American ultra races and reflects on the changes in his training and mindset over the years. In this conversation, Nickademus Hollon discusses his experiences and insights as an ultrarunner. He shares the pressure he felt to succeed and be recognized, and how it affected his performance. He also reflects on the similarities between his best performances and the lessons he learned from them. Nickademus emphasizes the importance of holding expectations lightly, staying present, and reacting to the current situation. He offers advice for those transitioning from 100-mile to 200-mile races, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing health over fitness. The conversation concludes with a fun game of Let's Get Deep and a comparison between Barkley and Tor de Geants races. Takeaways Mental training and sports psychology play a crucial role in ultra running, helping athletes overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Coaches should focus on the holistic development of athletes, caring about their well-being and personal growth, not just their race results. Self-awareness and understanding the different parts of oneself can help athletes make better choices and perform optimally. High-risk races, such as 200-milers, have gained popularity in recent years, attracting athletes seeking unique challenges and experiences. The mindset and approach to training and racing can evolve over time, influenced by personal experiences, interests, and goals.

Isabella Janovick was born in Oceanside, CA and grew up doing team sports (basketball and swimming) then later got into extreme sports, snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding. After breaking her back snowboarding at the age of 19 and almost being paralyzed, she switched to a “safer” sport - running. Isabella began to run local road races and in 2014 met Nickademus Hollon at an outdoor bootcamp. Nick had just launched his coaching business and Isabella was one of his first clients. They ran together often, he introduced her to the trails and the ultra world and in 2015 Isabella ran her first ultra, the Lake Hodges 50k. This same year Isabella was also diagnosed with Ménière's Disease, which causes hearing loss, imbalance and vertigo.  Isabella aka “IzzyB” continued to grow with the sport, increasing her mileage and  started her own running club Ultrabuds. In 2016 she raced her first Spartan, and usually participates in 1-2 races a year in between ultras.  Professionally Izzy owns her own marketing and communications company where she works with running brands and race directors such as Injinji, Spring Energy, Nathan Sports and the Endurance Race Series, to name a few. She is also a Professor of Marketing part-time at two universities and advises senior experience projects.  When Izzy isn't running or posting on Instagram, she spends quality time with her family in both San Diego and Idaho, husband and two rescued pitbulls Dally and Romanoff.  More from me @hilsport55 Go to www.athleticgreens.com/TRWP to get 5 FREE travel packs and one year supply of Vitamin D!  Check out oladance headphones at www.oladance.com/trw and use discount code TRW20 for 20% off!  Get free shipping on any order from Goodr at goodr.com code TRW

In this episode we talk about his 2016 performance where he teamed up with Robert Killian to take a shot at Tough Mudder’s $100,000 bonus for winning AND reaching 100 miles. Chad shares with us the difference in running alone as well as with a team, and talks about his impressive 100-mile finish. Unfortunately, one team beat them out with 105 miles, so they didn’t get the $100,000 but Chad said it wasn’t about the money to begin with. It looks like Chad is looking to go back to WTM 2017 and will be joining Heather and I at L.A.’s Toughest Mudder in March. For the second part we have Matt B. Davis who was on the show before in episode 22.  Having Matt on was especially important to us because he has been a major contributor to the success of this show. He also talks to us about his upcoming Tough Guy race.
