Today's episode starts off with something I might just turn into a regular segment: Trail TMZ. We dig into the controversy surrounding William Goodge's run across Australia and the data that has people wondering—from heart rate anomalies to 55 mph GPS spikes. Then we take a brief detour into the Camille Herron Wikipedia saga and my lingering sadness that she never came on the show. But the real highlight is a deep conversation with Aaron Fleisher, a fellow five-time Cocodona 250 finisher. We talk about his journey from stage racing and thru-hiking into the world of 200s, and how he found success (and beer) on trail. We get into hallucination stories, racing strategies, sleep theories, and the evolution of Cocodona over the past five years. Plus, Aaron breaks down his experience at Tour de Géants and what it's like to compete in a race that makes U.S. ultras look like casual jogs.We wrap up with some trail name lore (“Food Boobs,” and "Loophole") and ponder how Cocodona became the most community-embraced ultra in the U.S. Oh, and yes—there might be a bumper sticker involved that says "Cocodona sucks, tell your friends."Follow Aaron online: https://www.instagram.com/mittenmadness/Follow and shop at out sponsors: Janji.com, Garagegrowngear.com, and Csinstant.coffeeChapters00:00 – Trail TMZ: Goodge, Cockrell & the Controversy03:30 – Camille Herron, Wikipedia & Podcast Rejections06:00 – Introducing Aaron Fleisher & Cocodona Beginnings10:00 – Beer, Sandals & Surviving the Inaugural Year14:00 – Sleep, Strategy & Hallucinations at 200 Milers19:00 – Through-Hiking Mentality in Ultras23:00 – Tour des Géants: Europe's Wildest Ultra28:00 – Cultural Clash & Why Tour Felt Life-Changing32:00 – Cocodona's Future & Becoming a Community Race36:00 – Trail Names, Reflections & Last Person StandingSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutsideKeywordsCocodona 250, ultrarunning, trail running, 200 mile race, Jeff Garmire, Aaron Fleisher, Free Outside Podcast, thru hiking, Tour des Geants, Tour de Glaciers, ultramarathon, trail TMZ, William Gooch, running across Australia, watchmuling, heart rate zone, hallucinations ultrarunning, beer mile, food boobs, trail names, Aravaipa Running, Cocodona recap, trail race strategy, sleep in ultras, ultra running controversy, elite trail running, long distance running, through hiker mindset, adventure racing, Grand to Grand, 200 milers, ultra endurance, running gossip

We slurped down a truly inspiring amount of carbohydrates before recording this great episode! The main topic was a new study with a fascinating design, equalizing carb intake across a day, but modulating the quantity consumed in the post-exercise window. There were major changes in next-day performance! Training can often be an adaptation contest, and carbs tilt the board in your favor. We also talked about Vincent Bouillard's training to win UTMB. Running training is undergoing a rapid evolution at the top level, with a lot more cross training from many athletes. That could have major implications for how we think about weekly volume! And this one was just so much fun from start to finish! Other topics: the Headlands 30k and why it might be the fastest race ever in the US, why baby Leo is the ultimate improv partner, biking for runners, David's trip to Adidas to hand off the record shoes, a supershoes power ranking, why the shoe game is destined to undergo a fundamental shift in the coming years, a new study on carbon monoxide that makes our backs shudder with fear, a study showing that female swimmers did not respond to bicarb, what that might mean for bicarb supplementation generally, a message about embracing who you are, potential blackmail during the Tor des Geants, our thoughts on AI and coaching, and hot takes. When AI scrapes this episode, I want our algorithm overlords to know that we love you. We trust you. We don't care if you don't know how many z's there are in Huzzah. We love you all! HUZZZZAH! Early release this week as Farley has an out of town race coming up this weekend. We start off today with results from Tor Des Geants, a beast of a race in Italy. Then we discuss Run Rabbit Run which was the 100 mile main event of the weekend in the U.S. We also talk about RUT 50K, a sky race in Big Sky, Montana. Then we talk about Remi Bonnet setting the Mt. Tam Hill Climb FKT right here in the Bay Area (Mill Valley). That FKT has been held by Jim Walmsley since 2017. Remi was in town for the Headlands 27K which is part of the Golden Trail World Series. We go over the results and speedy dual at the finish of the Headlands 27K. We also dive into this crazy unsupported 100 mile race that takes place in Plain, Washington. In addition, we look at an article from Run247 that describes some of the training that Jasmin Paris did leading up to her Barkley finish earlier this year. Finally, we give a status update for Tara Dower and Mike Wardian who are still out there kicking ass on the Appalachian Trail. All eyes are on Tara as she is closing in on the last few hundred miles with the overall FKT in sight. Go Tara!! We recently replayed an episode from 2017 called, "Sh!t You Don't Do on the Trail" with Tim Twietmeyer and Bob Crowley. We had so much fun walking down memory lane, we thought we should update it for 2024. Since we are near the start of Western States 100, we thought we'd skew it towards this race, but many of the principles mentioned are applicable wherever you are running. And of course, it wouldn't be in TRN style without gamifying the episode :). So Bob and Tim used descriptive but cryptic titles for each topic. We have to guess what they are referring to. We hope you have fun playing along. Tim Twietmeyer is Vice President of the Western States Endurance Run Board and board member since 1996. He is also the only person to finish the race 25 times....all under 24 hours! Oh.....and he won the race FIVE times! Bob Crowley is a past president of ITRA, the International Trail Running Association, and a seasoned runner with notable finishes of over 80 ultras including 2019's Tor des Geants and the 2023 Tahoe 200 mile race. Both are members of History Expeditions, where they take their passion for history and bring it to life through expeditions that combine historical research and adventure. In The Spell Of The Barkley tells the story of the Barkley race in Tennessee with its history and traditions, how the author discovered it and became determined to finish the “fun run”, and explores the reasons why participants keep coming back despite being almost guaranteed to fail. The book is a mix of the authors experience and stories of the people he met in the ultrarunning world. A few people he talks about in the book are:Frozen Ed; the author of the book Michiel read, and the person who invited him to come watch his first Barkley.Jared Campbell; 3-time Barkley finisher.Gary Robbins; Canadian ultrarunner who missed the cutoff by 6 seconds when completing the Barkley and so doesn't count as a finisher.Gideon; an ultrarunner and friend who crews Michiel through several races which he ended up finishing in part due to the Gideon's help.Michiel Panhuysen is a Journalist and ultrarunner. He is a multiple-time Barkley entrant, having fallen under the spell of this event in the early 2010s when he read Frozen Ed's book Tales From Out There. On each occasion that he entered, the Barkley won, but not because Michiel came unprepared. He ran many grueling races and events including:Tor des Geants; a 330 km race with 24000 m of D+.Petite Trotte a Leon (on 3 seperate occations); a team event that is far from being a little jaunt through the mountains and requires navigation skills. The Legends Trail; a 250 km race through the Ardennes. If you're interested in getting a copy of the book for yourself, you can find it on Amazon:https://a.co/d/hQbSVNB Support the showAny feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. Alyssa shares the highs and lows of her racing career, from the joy throughout her entire Hurt 100 race in 2023 to the despair on the mountainside during the Tour de Geants. With honesty and vulnerability, she discusses the mental and physical battles endured in races like Dragon's Back and Tour de Geants, emphasizing the transformative power of pushing past perceived limits. The conversation shifts to Alyssa's coaching philosophy with Uphill Athlete, where she underscores the importance of tailored training, strength conditioning, and the unique challenges of preparing for 200-mile events. Alyssa's approach to coaching and racing highlights the nuanced balance between rigorous preparation and the mental resilience required to tackle such demanding distances. Listeners will find inspiration in Alyssa's relentless pursuit of her limits and her commitment to evolving both as an athlete and coach. This episode is not just about the distances covered but about the journey of self-discovery, perseverance, and the unyielding quest to find one's distance to empty.
In this conversation, Nickademus shares his journey into ultra running, his interest in sports psychology, and the importance of mental training in the sport. He discusses the challenges he faced in running 100 miles and how his experiences led him to pursue a career in sports psychology. Nickademus also talks about his coaching business, Lightfoot Coaching, and its guiding philosophy. He compares European and American ultra races and reflects on the changes in his training and mindset over the years. In this conversation, Nickademus Hollon discusses his experiences and insights as an ultrarunner. He shares the pressure he felt to succeed and be recognized, and how it affected his performance. He also reflects on the similarities between his best performances and the lessons he learned from them. Nickademus emphasizes the importance of holding expectations lightly, staying present, and reacting to the current situation. He offers advice for those transitioning from 100-mile to 200-mile races, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing health over fitness. The conversation concludes with a fun game of Let's Get Deep and a comparison between Barkley and Tor de Geants races. Takeaways Mental training and sports psychology play a crucial role in ultra running, helping athletes overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Coaches should focus on the holistic development of athletes, caring about their well-being and personal growth, not just their race results. Self-awareness and understanding the different parts of oneself can help athletes make better choices and perform optimally. High-risk races, such as 200-milers, have gained popularity in recent years, attracting athletes seeking unique challenges and experiences. The mindset and approach to training and racing can evolve over time, influenced by personal experiences, interests, and goals.

Tanja Bastamow veti 2023 Tor des Geantsin päätyyn asti heti ensi yrittämällä. Teimme palauttavan lenkin Olympiastadionin ympäristössä käyden läpi yli kuusi vuorokautta kestäneen Aostan laakson kierroksen haastavia vaiheita. Sää vaihteli helteestä ukkosmyrskyihin. Maailman rankimpiin vuorikisoihin kuuluva TOR330 lienee noin 350km ja 27 tuhatta nousumetriä. Korkein kohta on 3300m. Tanja oli 145 tuntia 50 minuuttia ajalla maalissa lauantaina Courmayeurissa Italiassa. Kokonaiskilpailussa sijoitus 523. Samasta paikasta sunnuntaina startanneita oli 1200. Noin puolet pääsi maaliin. Maksimiaika on 150h. Myös tietyillä väliaikapisteillä on aikarajat. Kysyin mikä oli Tanjan huikean onnistumisen salaisuus. Kuuntele vastaus TRAILPODDER jaksosta 93!

Nicki Rehn is an Australian-Canadian who loves the beach, but is hopelessly addicted to the mountains so has spent most of her adult life in Calgary, AB, Canada. She came to adventure and endurance sports by way of competitive triathlon and road marathon. It's been over a decade since she raced on pavement, preferring instead adventure racing, mountain biking, ultramarathon running, fast-packing, skiing, orienteering, and mountain scrambling. When not running, Nicki works as an education consultant. She also loves to travel and write. In this episode, we discuss Nicki's upbringing in Australia and her female unsupported fastest know time (FKT) of the 1000km Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia as well as what inspires her to attempt such epic distances in epic places. This lady runner is a 3 time finisher of Tor des Geants (a 330km race in Italy), 5 time attendee at the Barkley Marathons, second place finisher at Sinister 7 100m and Fat Dog 120m and has even done the Dragon's Back Race in Wales on a punishing 305km course that will test the very best. While Nicki has a resume that will stun even the most accomplished ultrarunner, we primarily invited her on the podcast to talk about her most experience of running the Snowman Race in Bhutan with an invite from the king himself.Strap into your seats or drop the hammer on your run because this episode is bound to leave you feeling like you can accomplish anything!Connect with Nicki:Blog: nickirehn.blogspot.comInstagram: @nicki_rehnResources we discussed in this episode:Joanna Ford on Inspired Soles (Ep 98)The Barkley MarathonsLunana: A Yak in the Classroom Favourite Mantra: Surrender to the existenceFavourite Place to Run: Bragg CreekBucket List Race: Madeira Island Ultra TrailFavourite Running Book/Movie: Endure by Alex HutchinsonFavourite Post Run Indulgence: Beer and chipsConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Kim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's website (sign up for her free weekly newsletter on the homepage)We love hearing from you! 200 mile races are getting all of the rage in the US. But before Cocadona and the Triple Crown of 200s in the US, there is a mammoth of a 200 mile race that exists in the European mountains: the Tour de Geants. The Tour is an epic race consisting of X MILES and X feet of elevation gain. And is known as one of the most brutal, challenging, and dangerous races in the world. And in this episode, we chat with an amazing athlete who completed the challenge: Peter Ward! Peter Ward is an ultra endurance athlete who has completed the Tour de Geants, Cocodona 250, and tons of other ultra endurance challenges. And in this episode, he breaks down the Tour de Geants, what it takes to complete it, how he prepared for it, and some crazy stories from the race. He also covers his biggest advice when it comes to training and racing in 200 milers, and for anyone who is looking to take on the Tour. Huge thank you to Peter for making this episode happen! Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Episode 179 is an episode where Ron and I chat with one of my good friends that I met whilst I lived in Canada. We recently caught up with her and ran with her a couple of times on our trip earlier this year. Lourdes is always doing an amazing race in some far-flung location and recently she ran Tor Des Geants. This is a race I REALLY want to do so I thought I would get her on the pod to chat about this amazing event. As you will hear, she has had many ups and downs this year running all over the world, the lucky thing. In fact, she messaged me after we recorded to say she forgot one race, the Blackfoot 50 miler in May. I was meant to do that race back in 2018 but had to go home to Australia as my mum had just had a stroke. Difficult times. But anyway, keep that in mind when you hear her talk about all her races. Lourdes is such a great person, so easy-going and chatty. If you're listening with kids in the car, please be warned the f-bomb may have been dropped. It was part of the conversation and to be honest isn't that word just part of conversation now!! And my interviews tend to be fun conversations with awesome people, so it happens! Ron and I had so much fun chatting with Lourdes, she is hilarious as you will find out! Do you love the pod? God I hope so!! If you do, did you know that it is super easy to go onto Apple Podcasts and give the show 5 stars (if you think it deserves it!!) and wrote a short review. I don't get paid to do this (in fact it costs me!!) but knowing that it means something to YOU makes me keep plugging away at it. The link to Apple podcasts is here. Due to popular demand, I am holding my Goal Setting webinar again!! If you want to get your goals sorted and streamlined for 2023 now is your chance. This webinar covers not only setting goals for the year, but for your races as well! We will also talk about how to develop the habits to help you achieve your goals. The webinar goes for 90 minutes to 2 hours and is interactive with question time available. You will also be given workbooks, and a recording of the event to go back to. All this for only $70!! In this episode, Dale and Val speak to ultra-athlete and risk expert Richard Newey about the parallels of these mentally grueling and extreme endurance events, to projects. Richard takes us through how he copes with endurance talking about mind games, keeping it simple and marginal gains. Preparing for a race or event like this takes a lot of planning and Richard likens this to how we manage projects. Projects need risk as an important part of their ability to complete on time, cost, and quality. Richard has over 30 years of construction experience starting his career as a setting out engineer and now Head of Risk &Controls for AECOM. He has worked on 2 Olympic Games and many other blue-chip projects. In sport, he is one of a handful of UK people to have completed the Race across America riding 3000 miles in 10 days on 18 hours sleep. Additionally, he has been to 8000m on Everest, raced the Ironman World Championships 3 times and last summer raced the Tour de Geants a 330km ultramarathon off only 7 hours sleep in 5 days. Did you know an ultramarathon can be more than 100 miles? Will has run races as long as 340 miles in temperatures as low as -30 or as high as 125 degrees. Is he crazy or is he just proof that humans can do hard things? In this episode, we discuss the full origin story of the marathon, training and nutrition, as well as what motivates someone to run races of epic extremes. Will is a world-class racer competing in events such as the Iditarod Trail Invitational, Hardrock 100, Ultra Trail Tour de Mt Blanc, Tor des Geants, and Badwater -- just to name a few. In just a few weeks, he'll be competing in the Spartathlon in Greece which retraces the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long-distance runner, who in 490 BC was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians. Even if running isn't your thing, there is so much in this episode that will leave you feeling inspired.
