Getting older is pretty incredible. And that's not just our opinion — lately, on the HerMoney podcast, we've been talking to some amazing women who have shown us that getting old is actually a life-affirming experience. We recently chatted with Tamsen Fadal on reinventing your career in your 50s. There was also Gwen Bounds, who took up Spartan Racing at age 47, and Bonnie Hammer who started a family in her 40's. These women have shown us that there's no timeline for accomplishing all of your dreams. Michelle Singletary, personal finance columnist at the Washington Post, joins us to share some of the goals we should be meeting — or striving to meet — in every decade of our lives. Learning something new can be daunting, especially as you get older. But here's the thing, the sooner you master a new skill, whether it be how to invest in the stock market, manage your debt, or take on a new sport — the closer you are to mastering it. My guest today, Gwendolyn Bounds, author of “Not Too Late: The Power of Pushing Limits At Any Age,” wants you to ignore that nagging voice at the back of your head that says that you don't know enough to get started and just take the first step. She did that when she took on Spartan Racing at age 47 and today, we're talking about the parallels between striving for financial and physical goals at any age. Takeaways: Setting big goals, whether they be physical or financial, and breaking them down into smaller steps is the key to achieving personal growth. Overcoming financial and physical challenges requires perseverance and a willingness to push yourself beyond your comfort zones. Financial and physical challenges share similar processes of setting goals, learning new steps, getting out of your comfort zone, and seeing incremental improvements add up. It's never too late to start pushing limits and pursuing new financial challenges. Debbie last spoke with Panos in January 2019 after meeting him in Ironman Hawaii 2018! Here is our past conversation- https://debbiepotts.net/pnoe-cardio-m... Who is Panos Papadiamantis? "I started my studies at the National Technical University of Athens, where I studied mechanical engineering. I then continued my studies at the Stanford School of Engineering, focusing on operations research and engineering management. During my stint at Stanford, I worked as a research assistant in the Center of International Security and Collaboration. There, I worked alongside Siegfried Hecker, former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and William Perry, former Minster of Defence of the United States, in conducting research and risk analysis on nuclear technology and its implications on national security. Following my studies at Stanford, I worked as a product manager in IT infrastructure companies in Silicon Valley while always wanting to start my own company. Hence, when my cofounder and friend approached me with the idea of developing an affordable breath analysis device to analyze human metabolism with clinical precision, I jumped on board. As an engineer on paper and at heart, I was always fascinated by analyzing and understanding systems. Building PNOĒ exposed me to the most fascinating, uncharted, and misunderstood one, the human body. At PNOĒ, my colleagues and I have analyzed more than 100,000 metabolic profiles and helped more than 40,000 achieve better health and performance through metabolic-based recommendations founded on their metabolic profiles and recommendations supported by more than 1,000 peer-reviewed articles. PNOĒ is trusted by 3,000+ health professionals, world-class athletes such as Russel Wilson (NFL champion), Emma Raducanu (US Open champion), and Annie Thorisdottir (Crossfit Games champion), 100+ research centers and universities including MIT, UCLA, and Columbia University, as well as leading brands including Inbody and Spartan Racing." We chat about all things metabolic testing at rest and exercise... What does it mean to have a personalized program? How can breath analysis inform the main pillars of personalized programming How can breath reveal fuel usage and how can it help me become more fat efficient? How to test resting test- RMR - what do you find out? How does this help someone burn fat/lose weight? How do we test exercise metabolism- how to find fat burning, cross over and speed AT zones? Race pace? Training heart rates? How can we create an individualized program to match fueling to training and racing. The OCR Underground Show is the best resource for OCR specific training programs. In this episode I share two studies on Carbohydrates. Specifically they are about carbohydrate restriction training. When I wrote my book Fuel and Fire, my plan was to help readers understand the importance of food and training. These complement each other when done correctly and can provide powerful improvements in your performance. Carbohydrate restriction can boost or blunt results depending on how you do it. These two studies show how in one situation it can help your training and in another slow it down. In the Inside Mike's Mind segment I dive into Off Season Training for OCR. This time of year I always stress the importance of dividing your training cycles into an in season and off season plan. This might sound confusing, so I share some of the key aspects of off season training and what I am currently doing for my program. And finally I have a great chat with SGX Coach Gina DiSanto. Gina starting her fitness career over 20 years ago while living in Germany. She had to overcome a huge language barrier, but fell in love with the industry. Fast forward and she is a nutritionist, spinning and pilates instructor, as well as SGX Certified. Gina recently competed at the Spartan race in Sparta, Greece as well as the Deka World Championship. She shared some of her training plans on how she is prepping for these big races and well as how she overcome significant injury to compete at a high level again. Today's episode features performance coach and breathing specialist, Leo Ryan. Leo is the founder of Innate-Strength.com. Leo has studied from many elite personal training, physical therapy and breathing schools including Dip. Buteyko Method, Wim Hof, Oxygen Advantage Master Instructor, Fascial Stretch Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Pilates. Leo previously appeared on episode 219 speaking on many elements of breath training for athletic performance including nose vs mouth breathing in training, breath hold time as a readiness indicator, and more. The use of one's breath for training and overall well-being has become more and more on my radar with each passing year. From my foray into the endurance end of the competitive spectrum (Spartan Racing in 2019), to understanding the role of rib cage expansion in movement biomechanics, to breathing for energy and recovery, to the training practices of the old-school strongmen, in each year of my life, understanding and training the breath becomes more substantial. On today's show, Leo Ryan returns to dig into the role of breath training, and its role in recovery, both within the workout itself, and in day-to-day recovery from training efforts. We often talk about having an adequate “aerobic base”, but for some reason, the actual core of that aerobic base, which is “breathing”, is rarely considered, and Leo goes into making capacity workouts even more effective through breathing mechanics, physiology and rhythm. Leo will also cover the role of CO2 and CO2 tolerance in human and athletic function, rhythmic aspects of breathing in athletic performance, and then some dynamics on breathing in the scope of strength training sessions. Timestamps and Main Points: 4:57 – Thoughts on Irish Dancing and athletic performance, from Leo's perspective residing in Ireland 13:00 – Getting deeper into the role of breathing and breath-work in helping athletes recover from intense workouts 27:00 – The state of world health and strength on the human level, in the scope of modern society 32:00 – How one's breathing throughout the day can dictate one's recovery from training 41:27 – The specifics of Leo's breath training that helped his training group to drastically improve their recovery in a 10-day period 46:00 – The dynamics of breathing rhythm on health and performance 52:20 – Controlled exhale dynamics and the importance of CO2 tolerance in athletic development 1:05:40 – Thoughts on breathing in the scope of heavier strength training, from a recovery and pressure dynamics perspective “There is a lot of footwork, a lot of high kicks, and a lot of fast feet (in Irish dancing) so for improving your speed for sport, it's absolutely incredible” “Paul Chek said it beautifully that “every summer has its winter” and if you don't take your winter, winter is going to take you” “The breath is a phenomenal window into how your whole body and mind is working; and then you can use the breath to upregulate or downregulate the system as needed” “(After over-using coffee) when you have your morning coffee, you are just getting yourself up to baseline” “The breath is a beautiful guide to rebuilding your baselines, and making sense of where you are in the world” “My idea of breath training is restoring your breath back to baseline” “They ran (12 minutes max) their way first; then they trained for 10 days in nasal breathing and breath techniques, and then they ran it again; and they ran it my way. What I found was a 1-2% performance improvement, but I found a 40% recovery improvement”
Discomfort is the currency of our dreams. My coach Brooke Castillo talks about often. In the podcast I share ways to allow the discomfort instead of avoiding it by pretending, controlling, or reacting to it. Learning how to go through discomfort is an essential tool if you want to live a big full life. I share my personal experience of going through discomfort recently when I participated in a Spartan race.

Mostly these are 5ks and 10ks. They come in varying difficulties. They do longer races, too, but Leona has stuck with the 5ks. Two of the races have had super versatile terrains. You have lots of obstacles along the way, including rope climbs and the like. Some are water obstacles, too. There's also a spear throw! She doesn't get a ton of time to train -- she's inconsistent with it. People really support each other and it's a ton of fun. Set a goal and train for one! JUMPING INTO NSNG® Someone recently wrote to Anna asking whether she should commit to this lifestyle now. She has had hormonal imbalance in the past and hasn't been able to lose weight. In this episode (audio brought over from my YouTube channel), I discuss my personal experience of transitioning from Spartan race open to age group. I lost 100 pounds and ran my first Spartan race in June 2017. After completing in 2 Spartan sprints I transitioned to age group for an early start time but I fell in love with competing and running age group in one race motivated me to improve upon my skills so that I could continue to do it for more races and place better and better each time. I joined age group before being "fast" or having a "clean" race and the more I competed the more I stepped up my gain. Eventually I found myself on the podium 3 times and in the top 10 in multiple races. As long as you are ready to attempt everything, go out there with a competitive can do attitude, and accept and do ALL penalties then you can run age group. Nicole Mericle is your 2019 Spartan Race World Champion. This is Nicole's first world championship. Nicole and Lindsay Webster have been going back and forth all year in the Spartan US Championship Series and at the Spartan North American Championship. Nicole and Lindsay are clearly the top two women in Spartan Racing right now. Lindsay has won most of their head-to-head matchups this year, but in the race that mattered most, Nicole Mericle stepped on the gas and won by nearly 16 minutes. Nicole's win at the Spartan World Championship this weekend was one of the most dominant World Championship performances we've ever seen, male or female. Her world championship places her alongside other past world champions including Lindsay Webster, Zuzana Cucomova, and Amelia Boone. We talk about how she was scared in the starting chute at Tahoe, why she comes out of the gate so fast at every race, and what her plans are for the Spartan Race Million Dollar Challenge. Nicole is sponsored by Darn Tough Socks, Spartan Race, and AltRed. You can follow her on Instagram at @nickeldm. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! Before you freak out, no, I am not turning tail on OCR or endurance training programs. If you follow my work, you know that recently I developed a program in collaboration with Ryan Fischer an extremely talented CrossFit Athlete. This program has been out for a mere 5 weeks and meeting with rave responses. An OCR athlete would do well to consider this process as the theme of the project is “Winning the Battle with Fatigue”. It so happens that an early adopter who has been in the program for said five weeks was kind enough to share his experience thus far.. It's worth a listen because his results are extraordinary. After you have a chance to hear his review feel free to reach out to him @mathewfreeman or pick up a copy of the program for yourself. Its almost unheard of for anyone to walk into the Spartan North American Championship course with only 2 prior events under her belt and cause a stir. Yet, cause a stir she did. Taking 2nd place among the most competitive pro's in the sport, she now sets her sights on the Spartan World Championships and no one is laughing. You'll have to listen to this episode to believe your ears. Dark Horse you say? It will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

A Diva, by definition is: “a celebrated female singer; a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera.” Laura may not be an opera singer but she is the sweetheart of Spartan Racing and yes, she can sing. Better… she is an incredible singer aside from being a pretty tough OCR competitor. I asked Laura to come on to discuss her choice of racing apparel, our upcoming OCR Running Clinic and… you guessed it. I asked her to sing and sing she does. If you've never hear Laura sing, you need to listen to this episode. You'll be glad you did!
Alyssa Hawley member of The Spartan Pro Team has become a serious threat to the old guard in Elite Spartan Racing. She brings a unique blend of stamina along with the ability to out carry most in the field due to her strength. This episode we have more great tips and strategies to help give you an unfair advantage in your next Spartan Race with some awesome training advice. In this episode we have Brooke Bowen, with RFT Coaching, who gives us a Spartan Race Recap of the Vegas Super Weekend. In our research review I discuss variable resistance training. This involves using equipment that changes resistance as you perform an exercise. This is an incredible effective tool for building strength and power. Plus it is a perfect way to change up your program if you have never done anything like this. I discuss of few studies that show how effective it is and explain more about how you can apply it to your training. And finally in our SGX Coach's interview, I have on Andi Hardy with Wired 4 Life. Andi has been an Elite Obstacle Course Racer since 2012 and has multiple top three finishes. Outside of the obstacle course racing world she has several 5K top three finishes, two triathlon top three finishes, and a 10 mile race top three finish. Not only does she love to race and compete, but loves fitness in general. She gave up a career as an educator to work in the fitness industry. She worked as a coach for the Spartan Race Workout Tour for two years and lead workouts across the country to large groups of people. The participants vary from beginners to advanced athletes. She also coaches and trains individuals and groups outside of Spartan Race through her business called Wired4Life. In this episode Andi shares her story of climbing out of a very dark place and finding Spartan Racing and fitness to inspire her and others. She had a million excuses to not be successful, but she just ignored them and push through until she reached her goal. We all have those times where we feel down on ourselves and our situation. Andi shares some of her tips on how you can pick yourself up and reach your goals no matter what. Full show notes: www.spartanunderground.com/episode-29
Most athletes that compete in obstacle races no full well what they'll get from participating… muddy, beat down and a great sense of accomplishment. They can't get enough! Investing in the education and training to make athletes stronger runners, have the ability to put in more work injury free, is a hard sell. We believe it's because most people simply don't know what to expect. It's hard to compare the bang for their buck until… they have experienced the benefits first hand as so many other athletes have. This episode features Chris Schapman an elite OCR athlete who understands the value and asked that we do this Q&A in hopes that those who are curious can hopefully see the forest for the trees and wrap their heads around what exactly they can expect. If you are one of those people who are just not sold, this episode is for you! #spartan racing #worldstoughestmudder #diazhumanperformance
You've heard it said: “You are what you eat”, I would suggest more to the point, “your race results reflect how you eat”. The sport of obstacle racing is growing like a weed. Unfortunately good training advice for the sport is spotty at best. It will take time for us geeks to figure out how best to prepare a champion for this ever changing sport. Suffice to say; how you feed plays an important role in your success. I've invited Josh Stryde (Nutritionist/ Faye Stennings confidant/boyfriend) on to discuss his newly released book: Nutrition for the OCR Athlete, aptly put. Josh has put together a very well organized approach to feeding for those who compete in Spartan Racing, Tough Mudder etc., he also includes an overview of Austin Azar's feeding strategy that gained him 100 miles in The World's Toughest Mudder in 2016. Be sure to listen to this one if you plan to race this season. www.naturalrunningnetwork.com
In this episode learn tips and strategies to help better prepare for your next Spartan Race. Learn about a training app to track all of your training activities. It gives you live feedback on your training, heart rate, intensity, and progress. This app provides incredible feedback to help you understand your training and determine if you are making the right progress. Also, learn the research behind rhythmic breathing and its effect on running. Rhythmic or cadence breathing refers to timing your breathes with each step while running. Learn the physiological and psychological benefits of this breathing strategy and how it can help make you a better, more efficient runner. In our SGX Coaches's interview, I talk with Coach Bryan Ginger Spartan. Coach Bryan is the co-owner for Fitness Without Limits. Him and his partner Coach Bonnie Spartan are living and embracing the Spartan Lifestyle. Bryan shares his story how he was in his 20's and pre-diabetic, suffering from high blood pressure, exhaustion, and a host of other health issues. He took control and lost over 100lbs and eventually found Spartan Racing. Coach Bryan's passion is undeniable, and you will learn some incredible insight and tactics to help you with your training. Coach explain how Spartan Racing can play a role in your weight loss journey, how to eat for weight loss and performance, how to be a better runner when you struggle at it, planning for the 2017 race season, and lessons he learned from being on Season 4 of the Bone Skull Challenge. We also discuss her recent Track & Field competition at The Stanford Invitational where she bested her previous scholastic records at 800 meters with a blistering 2:10, plans for upcoming Spartan Racing and more. www.naturalrunningnetwork.com If you had not seen the videos of Rose Running intervals at 20 mph be sure to visit https://www.facebook.com/naturalrunningnetwork/to find this and others.
Obstacle Course Racing is hot. Anyone that does an OCR event knows what I am talking about. Some say that they suffer from PRTSS (post-race traumatic stress syndrome), once the race is over, the buzz starts to ware off and the competitors begin to miss the race community they have come to love and respect. Enter Obstacle Maniac, the brain child of Gary Borad and Craig Covington founders of the social site geared to promote post-race banter among the people who collectively understand this experience and want to talk about it beyond the race weekend. Sure, there are other sites that cover the goings on of the race favorites, the elites and pros of the sport but they get plenty enough coverage. Certainly, the familiar names and faces appear but they share the lime light with the mid packers who are proud of their efforts and are hungry for more chatter about all things OCR. If you are one of these folks and have been looking for a place to share your happiness post event, it would serve you well to visit http://www.obstaclemaniac.com
