Dick Nunis was a character. Responsible for so much of the framework of how the Disney Company operated internally, he laid the framework for how Cast Members are trained. He had a tremendous work ethic, which led him from the football field to the mail room at Disney, then to Florida and beyond. On today's show, we pay tribute to Dick and the many life lessons he left behind. ---------------- Support the show! Other than Walt Disney himself, there is in my mind no other individual who has made such a dent on what people know as the Disney theme park experience than Dick Nunis, whose passing has been made public today, December 13th, 2023. He is a Disney legend, and without his leadership, projects like Magic Kingdom and Epcot and Typhoon Lagoon would have never gotten to the finish line. His leadership was as impressive as any individual involved in the parks. And his leadership style--it was many times controversial. No one got results and made things happen like Dick Nunis. My colleagues spoke often of how he mentored the leaders around him and spoke so keenly about the guest experience. And yet others spoke of how he could verbally tear you apart like no other. Still, he is more than a Disney Legend. He is a force to be reckoned with. When Dick Nunis joined Disneyland in 1955, the Park employed 600 cast members. By the time he retired from his “summer job” 44 years later, Disneyland boasted 13,000 cast members and Walt Disney World employed another 50,000. He is a legend. And this podcast celebrates the essence of his leadership. My new book, "A Century of Powerful Disney Insights" is available! Google him and you will find that he is no stranger to controversies and it is all from him taking a stand for what he truly cares about. Despite the controversies and adverse reactions from most of the Malay Muslim community in Singapore, he stood by what he felt was the right thing to do. We talked briefly about how one could take a stand in the eyes of someone who I find fit to talk about standing up for something that matters and doing it with integrity and not backing down even when there is no agreement. Ramadhan Special since this is recorded on the month of Ramadhan - This is also the first episode where Islam and matters pertaining to some of the Muslim communities in Singapore are being discussed as brother Terence addresses taking a stand as Muslims when it comes to theological convictions. Most grandmas have a few things in common: they're sweet, great cooks and have amazing stories to tell. 68-year-old Melba Nunis is no exception. The “simpler” times she spent as a young girl in her mother's kitchen sparked her love for Kristang cuisine, a culinary culture that wholesomely represents Malaysia's diverse history. Consisting of Indian flavours, made with Malay spices, cooked with Chinese techniques and inspired by Portuguese, Dutch and British influences, WHY isn't it more well known in Malaysia? Melba had the same question, and so made it her life's mission to share the vivid colours of Kristang Cuisine. On the pod, she also recommends a great beginner-friendly Kristang dish to colour your holiday season! “For me, my kind of food will always be old-fashioned: the way I remember eating it from young.” - Melba Nunis Timestamps: 0:00 - Life as a Eurasian growing up on Kristang Cuisine 1:45 - What is Kristang cuisine? 2:56 - “I like to keep it the old-fashioned way.” 3:52 - Idea behind the award-winning cookbook: A Kristang Family Cookbook 5:09 - Melba at the Mansion: Why The Majestic Malacca renamed their restaurant after her 6:12 - The “Chicken Feet Experience” #markettrips 8:12 - Dine with Mel Supper Club: The home dining experience hosted by Chef Melba 9:45 - How she feels about people entering her private space 10:46 - How the pandemic affected Dine With Mel and kept her busy 12:35 - The challenges of going digital for Chef Melba 13:27 - Dine with Mel's future plans and goals - Collaborations 14:00 - The secret ingredients to Kristang cuisine 14:48 - “I don't know when I'll stop, but cooking keeps me going.” 16:30 - Sharing: We can't take it with us anyway later on, might as well leave it around for others to enjoy. 17:45 - A beginner-friendly Kristang dish: Portuguese Chicken Stew (perf for the holiday SZN) Watch on YouTube. For this episode, I was joined by Terence Kenneth John Nunis, a Singaporean Muslim convert. He grew up as a devout Catholic until his late teenage years when he converted to Islam. We kicked off the interview with Terence sharing his background as a Christian, his journey searching for the truth, and how it led him to Islam. Terence and I then talked about why he thinks that controversial Muslim apologists like Dr. Zakir Naik and Nouman Ali Khan must be banned from Singapore. We discussed the impacts of Muslim apologists of their ilk on the Muslim community and Muslim apologetics. We then delved into the importance of having free speech and democracy without taking such concepts to the extreme. The conversation then moved onto  Terence's views on Sunni tafsir and how each mufassir's own personal baggage, prejudices, and limitations as humans of their own time affect the tone of the tafsir. Terence then explained the need to be less dogmatic and to apply logic when learning tafsir to determine which ones are valid and applicable in the contemporary world.  We also discussed the various schools of thought in Sunni Islam and Terence's points of contentions with some of the schools of thought. This led to a discussion about various Sunni hadith including the ones on apostasy, fornication, and blasphemy. Terence then explained the “traditional Muslim” position on hadith and what makes a hadith sahih and if a hadith can supersede a verse in the Quran.  The discussion then turned to the state of affairs in the Muslim world and tokenism of Muslim converts by Muslims who were born in Islam. We ended the interview on the topic of the Sufi Tariqas' corruption scheme and how they are exploiting their fellow Muslims.
