POPULARITY
In this episode, Tim and Joel talk about why certain games are so replayable, why that is, if and when it is important, and how designers can intentionally think about replayability in their own games. We frame this discussion in terms of intrinsic motivations (gameplay that is inherently pleasurable) and extrinsic motivations (e.g. working towards a goal, trying to find something out, pursuing a story, pursuing social goals like in an MMO). We also talk about games and designers can reduce friction in cases where that might prevent you from returning to a game. 00:00:00 - Introduction and definitions - Intrinsic vs Extrinsic motivations, and friction. Discovery and play as intrinsic motivation. 00:08:50 - The best games weave intrinsic and extrinsic motivations together -- Valheim is a good example of this. 00:18:20 - Counterexample: State of Decay 2 - failure of shared context in multiplayer makes for external counter-motivation -- players end up feeling like there's no point. 00:24:56 - What is a game's "Discovery Space", and why does it count toward intrinsic motivation? 00:49:50 - Juice -- satisfying UX design. A game that is inherently, tactilely satisfying to interact with. 00:58:00 - What are "Extrinsic motivations" and what are some examples? 01:29:30 - Friction: why do people feel like they don't want to come back? How can you design toward getting players back to your game. 01:42:48 - Making it personal: What games are we each most likely to go back to next? Games mentioned Truck Simulator, Disco Elysium, Ubisoft games, Valheim, Dead Cells, Mobile Games, One Hour One Life, No Man's Sky, Dying Light, Minecraft, Elite Dangerous, Pentiment, Frostpunk, Workers and Resources, Going Home, Skyrim, Scum, Cyberpunk 2077, Sifu, Dwarf Fortress, Deathloop, Project Zomboid, Baldur's Gate 3.

We dip into the importance of immersive detail in games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Witcher 3, and Firewatch, the pulled-back scale of strategy games like Frostpunk and Xcom, and touch on some of the emergent storytelling that happens in games like One Hour One Life and Xcom. We also touch on ways indie games can match the expansiveness of detail often found in AAA titles.
When's the best time to release a game? Spring? Winter? Do AAA and Indie studios share the same release window concerns? How has the advent of social media and content creators influenced changes in game marketing? In this episode Anthony & Skylar discuss their thoughts on game release windows including their experience of how they have and haven't changed over the years.Join us as we discuss Ori and the Blind Forest, One Hour One Life, Yes Your Grace, and more!

This week, we revisit Jason Rohrer’s multiplayer civilization-building game and Edgy Award Winner One Hour, One Life. We wanted to revisit the game some months after launch and see how far its players had managed to progress during that time. Unfortunately, we discover that not much has changed, and we speculate as to which of the structural limitations of the game might be responsible. But the game still creates great emergent stories, and we share a few from our latest playthroughs. In one, Blake destroys a village food supply by overcooking an omelette. Nordahl Grieg videregående skole har nettopp fått godkjent en søknad om offentlig Ph.D om spill i skolen. I denne episoden snakker vi derfor om forskning på spill i skolen og de spørsmålene som følger her. Hva skal til for god undervisning? Gir spill i skolen bedre resultater?
Blake and Jordan play Jason Rohrer’s newest game, titled One Hour, One Life. Certainly one of the most original and inventive games we’ve played for the podcast, Rohrer’s multiplayer game is an experiment in collective world-building: dependent on other real people players for gameplay, you play as one human being in a civilization vastly more complicated than what you could create alone. We talk about how remarkable it is that players have been cooperating as much as they have been, and Blake tells the oddly touching story of one of his most meaningful in-game lives. You can purchase the game here: http://onehouronelife.com/ And follow Jason Rohrer on Twitter: @jasonrohrer
