Cheyenne joins Ben this week to talk about a word that gets a lot of bad press, but in reality, it is a necessity in most activities involving progress and self-improvement. After conversing about what games they are playing (and discovering Ben's Hogwarts House), they dive right in to deep end and commence with the festivities. Topics explored: the “Epic Fail” meme, Tom Platz, CrossFit acronyms, the invention of Post-It Notes, John Cleese's speeches and educational videos, corporate culture, points of failure in engineering, stories about successes and failures in the academic settings, the roguelike and roguelite labels, and looping game mechanics.  Games discussed this week are as follows—Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Infinity Nikki, Hogwarts Legacy, Uncle Chop's Rocket Shop, Papers Please, Plate Up, Baldur's Gate 3, Hades, Kenshi, Deathloop, Disco Elysium, Indigo Prophecy, Super Meat Boy, and Seaman. Finally, Ben and Cheyenne “tie a bow on it” with some words of wisdom and a couple of Spock references—the Star Trek character, not the pediatrician.  *** 00:00:20 - A city of roses, serving up smiles, parking lot beatdown, Dragon Age: The Veilguard 00:02:35 - Mass Effect opinions, Ben likes the synthesis ending, Liara T'Soni, and Infiniti Nikki 00:06:40 - A cozy fashion battling platformer, getting homework at PAX, and impatient much? 00:08:48 - Thoughts on Hogwarts Legacy, mediocre story, and Cheyenne guesses Ben's house 00:11:11 - The new Indiana Jones game trailer, the nitty and the gritty, and a previous customer 00:13:01 - Ox Ford has a comma, Cheyenne's failure, person versus thing, and positive views 00:15:13 - The Google Ngram Viewer (no exceptions), the EPIC FAIL, and planking nostalgia  00:18:02 - The Tom Platz weightlifting philosophy, muscle building, and success through failure 00:20:53 - A tale of 3M's Post-It Notes, the John Cleese speech, and the Video Arts sales story  00:24:31 - The perception of mistakes in corporate culture, and the measure of an employee  00:28:17 - “In a world…,” Mr. Perfect's Plex, SPOFs and SPORs, and in failures in academia  00:32:20 - A bell curve, thoughts on grading, the architecture shoe, and teams on instruments 00:41:43 - Uncle Chop's Rocket Shop summary, 5 endings (not 4), and “not for all ages” humor  00:47:12 - Ben's least favorite descriptors, the rogue prefix, no barrels, and looping mechanics 00:52:00 - “Leveling” characters, weakness before strength, and broadening your knowledge 00:55:52 - Fireworks tampering, the thematics of failure, and “failure is preferred” scenarios  01:03:11 - Excessively difficult games, back to the rocket shop, wrapping up, and Star Trek   *** Follow Two Vague on… Our website: https://www.twovaguepodcast.com On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/two_vague_podcast On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@twovaguepodcast On Substack: https://twovaguepodcast.substack.com/ On Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/twovaguepodcast.com For show appearance and other inquiries, contact us at: twovaguepodcast@gmail.com -AND-  …for all of your PRI and 2VP merch check out the Partly Robot Industries store at TEEPUBLIC! https://www.teepublic.com/user/partly-robot-industries *** References, Links, and Tags For more information on Infinity Nikki, check out the official website! https://infinitynikki.infoldgames.com/en For more information about Uncle Chop's Rocket Shop, developer Beard Envy Games, and publisher Kasedo Games… https://www.unclechops.com/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/1849790/Uncle_Chops_Rocket_Shop/ https://www.beardenvy.co.uk/ https://www.kasedogames.com/ #Podbean #DIYPodcast #ApplePodcast #VideoGames #Trivia #Comedy #Talkshow #2VP #TwoVaguePodcast #PodernFamily #InterviewShow #GamersofThreads #Gamer #PartlyRobot #PartlyRobotIndustries #TeePublic #InfinityNikki #KasedoGames #UncleChopsRocketShop #BeardEnvyGames

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we complete our miniseries on rotoscoped games with part two of The Last Express. We talk about the sweep of history, playing parallel, ending in Vienna and other topics before turning to takeaways. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: To Vienna (Tim), Somewhere after Strasbourg (Brett) Issues covered: different puzzle formats and it still working, not knowing what to do with the bug, diverting to The Murder on the Orient Express plot, putting a spin on the old plots, Tim has a favorite tea, political violence in games, world history on the march, the tension of violence in political discourse, the legendary cities it passes through, avoiding caricature for the most part, the melting pot, strong writing and performances, naturalism and theatrics, countries shifting, passing through empires, playing parallel versions of the story, trying the wrong rooms, the medical issue of the older Russian, the importance of time, games that are watertight, the appearance of simulation, adjusting the state machine, wondering whether the game knows what you know, the dog and having to get it into place, a consistent character, committing to a different sort of game and the downstream consequences, comparing with more abstract games, adding constraints, pulling in things from other media, making a big leap forward in realism and groundedness, the talent for keyframing grounded animation, getting metrics and level design constraints from the animation, deeper and different storytelling, teasing an interview, Gogo and Umaro and tuning your player experience. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: MYST, Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None, CSI, Peter Ustinov, Kenneth Branagh, Sherlock Holmes, Scream, Wes Anderson, The Darjeeling Limited, Far Cry (series), Sierra, LucasArts, Anton Chekhov, Karateka, Deadline, The Witness, The 7th Guest, Prince of Persia, Firewatch, The Walking Dead, Jake Gyllenhaal, Source Code, Rian Johnson, David Bowie, Duncan Jones, Edge of Tomorrow, Michelle Monaghan, Groundhog Day, Bill Murray, Deathloop, Prey: Mooncrash, Day of the Tentacle, Vienna Waits for You, A Death in Venice, Another World, Super Mario (series), Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Fire and Ice, Eric Chahi, Jordan Mechner, Ray Harryhausen, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Phantasmagoria, Police Quest, Grim Fandango, Akira Toriyama, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Dragonball Z, Ashmann86, Em, Final Fantasy VI, Rage, Bethesda Game Studios, Kingdom Hearts III, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: An Interview! Note: The Murder on the Orient Express adaptation from 1974 did not feature Peter Ustinov, who took up the role of Poirot in 1978. The 1974 film starred Albert Finney. It's a Leap Year, and the strange minds at Indieventure have taken this as a sign that we need to do a thematically appropriate episode about a gaming trope all three of us happen to love! Yes, since 2024 has an extra day, we decided to dedicate that sliver of bonus time to talk all about time loops. Trust us, it makes sense. Because of the fluid nature of this discussion we don't limit ourselves just to indie games on this occasion, although they remain a heavy focus because, y'know, if there's a good theme out there then there's 10 great indies and a couple of solid AAs to every AAA that nailed it, right? In this episode we talk about a whole bunch of timey-wimey titles including Deathloop, The Forgotten City, Hades, Heaven's Vault, In Stars and Time, Layers of Fear, Life Is Strange, Outer Wilds, P.T., The Sexy Brutale, Slay the Princess, The Stanley Parable, and Ultros. We also touch upon a few other games that aren't technically about time loops but evoke similar feelings thanks to the iterative way you're encouraged to play, such as Frostpunk and Hitman. We follow this up with a shorter discussion about how the shared experience of the pandemic has influenced storytelling in indie games in general, including but not limited to a notably increased use of the time loop trope; touching on 1000xRESIST, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, Full Void, Goodbye Volcano High, In Stars and Time (again), Mediterranea Inferno, and Roman Sands RE:Build. That's not even a comprehensive list of our favourite time loop games, and we could literally have talked about this for another several episodes. Sadly, unlike the inhabitants of a time loop, we need to wrap things up eventually — but not before we share our latest hyperfixations! Rebecca has rather unexpectedly finished Romancelvania, and extremely unsurprisingly recently re-watched the live action Ace Attorney movie; Liam has caved to Rachel's influence and begun watching The Traitors, and has also finished playing Stardew Valley (apparently that's a thing you can do?!); and Rachel has been watching True Detective: Night Country, the fourth season of the acclaimed weird crime thriller anthology series which is finally back after a five-year hiatus.

The Blade game trailer reaction has been almost universally positive, but the question remains is this an Xbox exclusive or not? Marvel's Blade game is being made by Arkane Lyon but there has been no mention of Xbox or Xbox Game Pass. The official Xbox twitter account finally said something but we still don't have a clear answer. I posted my own poll about the Blade Xbox exclusive question and the results were pretty mixed. I also want to look at the various theories about what is going on with this game and the Xbox ownership. In Marvel's Blade, Eric Brooks is the legendary Daywalker, half-man, half-vampire torn between the warm society of the living and the rushing power of the undead. From Bethesda and Arkane Lyon, the studio that brought you Dishonored and “DEATHLOOP”, Marvel's Blade is a mature, single-player, third-person game set in the heart of Paris, now in development in collaboration with Marvel Games. It's that time of year again for Geoff Keighley to wave his magic Wiimote and give us the gift of new game trailers to drool over for the next few months! Nick and Josh have chosen a couple games showcased during the announcements to discuss at length, and Andy drops a few honorable mentions! Nick's picks: No Rest for the Wicked - From Moon Studios, the award-winning developers of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps comes No Rest for the Wicked, a visceral, precision Action RPG set to reinvent the genre. - Moon Studios (Steam, Xbox, PS5, TBA) Light No Fire - A game about adventure, building, survival and exploration together. Set on a fantasy planet the size of Earth. - Hello Games (Steam, TBA) Josh's picks: Marvel's Blade - In Marvel's Blade, Eric Brooks is the legendary Daywalker, half-man, half-vampire torn between the warm society of the living and the rushing power of the undead. From Bethesda and Arkane Lyon, the studio that brought you Dishonored and “DEATHLOOP”, Marvel's Blade is a mature, single-player, third-person game set in the heart of Paris, now in development in collaboration with Marvel Games. - Arkane Studios (PC, Xbox, TBA) EXODUS - EXODUS was announced at The Game Awards 2023 and is an epic new sci-fi action-adventure role-playing game franchise developed by the team at Archetype Entertainment. Produced by Blur Studio. BECOME THE TRAVELER. - Archetype Entertainment (PC, Xbox, PS5) Honorable mentions: Sega announced it's working on at least 5 remakes, possibly more, and possibly new IP! We aren't holding our breath on that last one, but here's the trailer which contains Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage! Hideo Kojima has announced a new multi-media/new media horror project he's been cooking up with genre enthusiast Jordan Peele! Little is known about the project, but there's likely hints and spoilers for the upcoming game hidden in the trailer as usual! Let us know if you catch anything! Here's the Trailer! Sony Santa Monica hit us over the head with a brand new DLC, free to owners of the game! This one is called God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla. More God of War is always good God of War isn't it? Oh yeah, and it's out already by the time you're reading this! Embark Studios pulled a fast one on us, and dropped THE FINALS Season 1 during The Game Awards! Jump in now, free on your platform of choice! A link to the Steam version is here. From the creators of the humble smash hit Untitled Goose Game, comes a new game Big Walk. House House describes the game as a “Cooperative Online Walker-Talker” Set out with your friends through a wide-open world full of challenges, puzzles, and discoveries. You'll need to work together to find your way around, stay in contact using an assortment of tools and toys, and figure out new ways to communicate when you suddenly find yourself speechless. Adventuring aside, there's plenty of time to just hang out. Sit and watch the sunset, or steal your friend's binoculars and kick them into the ocean. Spending time with friends is the best part of a big walk. A link to the Steam version is here. Lightspeed Studios showed off their project LAST SENTINEL. Set in dystopian Tokyo, this is an open-world action game with a seriously cool trailer. While we don't know much about the game, and haven't seen any gameplay, the trailer sure does look good! What would any game show be without a few Warhammer 40k games? How about the long-awaited Space Marine 2? The game looks awesome from what we've seen so far, and if the first game is any indicator, we'll be romping around in powersuits draining the blood of our foes in religious fervor come Sept, 9th 2024!  Mecha Break is another in a series of new mech games we've been seeing lately. It looks faster-paced than Armored Core IV: Fires of Rubicon, and may be exactly what some mecha lovers need! There was plenty more shown at The Game Awards this year! If you weren't able to catch it live, and would like to see the whole show in it's entirety it's available here! Happy gaming everyone! #thegameawards #tga2023 #gameoftheyear

In today's Daily Fix:The tech wizards at Digital Foundry have been comparing the tech seen in the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer to what will likely be powering the Nintendo Switch 2. Unfortunately for the handheld hybrid follow-up, it will likely not be able to run GTA 6—at least not well. And that makes it unlikely that the Switch 2 will get GTA 6 at all. Blame all the fancy flourishes in the game, specifically ray-tracing, which is something the Switch 2 hardware will likely struggle with, considering it will be based on a mobile chipset. In other news, concept art for Arkane's Blade game have been released, and it looks to be more stylish and "comic book-like" than their other games like Dishonered and Deathloop. Interestingly, no specific platforms have been announced. And speaking of platforms, Microsoft has continued to discount the Xbox Series X for the holidays. A brand new unit will cost around $399 USD, which is $100 less than its usual price.

A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

2021-2023: An era marked by significant upheavals and unexpected twists in the gaming world. The industry, in 2021, contended with the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, facing challenges from software delays to a global semiconductor shortage, leading to game postponements and cancellations. Amid this turmoil, the retro gaming sector flourished, with vintage games reaching record auction prices, though concerns of market manipulation cast shadows. 2022 pivoted to consolidation, headlined by Microsoft's colossal acquisition of Activision. While giants pursued acquisitions, the demise of E3 marked the end of an expo era, and EA's return to single-player games, highlighted by successes like Dead Space and Skate, offered a silver lining. 2023 began with the gaming community at an inflection point, with Google Stadia's shutdown and the closure of the Nintendo eShop triggering debates on the trajectory of cloud gaming and digital platforms. As consolidation remains a dominant trend, the industry anticipates emerging innovations and challenges that will shape its destiny. We extend our gratitude to our viewers for accompanying us on this exhilarating exploration of the ever-transforming gaming universe, with your unwavering support propelling our passion.Featured Games:Resident Evil: Village, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Deathloop, Halo Infinite, Elden Ring, Stray, & Hitman Trilogy. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 15 (00:06) - 2021 (24:06) - 2022 (40:51) - 2023 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Xbox's NEW January Showcase Is A Game Changer

Fans of the platform have long been accustomed to Xbox's lack of communication. To many, it seemed like the first half of the year flat out didn't exist for the company when it came to major showings or releases of games. With the announcement of Developer_Direct, it is the start of a new chapter as Xbox has two planned out. The first will feature heavy hitters such as Redfall, Minecraft Legends, Forza Motorsport, and Elder Scrolls Online. The second Developer_Direct will be a standalone show fully dedicated to Starfield. With a fluid format providing updates on highly anticipated exclusives and an inevitable summer showcase, Xbox fans are going from being left in the dark to three major showings from the company. This is a contrast to an otherwise anemic 2022. Beyond that, we have more details on a game we will be seeing a lot of on January 25th: Redfall. According to Arkane, Redfall leans heavily into its Far Cry inspiration -- a major point of conflict between Matty and Cog. What the Dukes do agree on is the staggering response to a lighter yet higher quality drop of titles into Game Pass for the month of January. Plus, our least favorite encounters in a public setting, Cog answering the bell for his lack of Deathloop completion, and more important subjects fill out an already busy week! It has been said by many far and wide that 2023 is the year Xbox must deliver. With the rumor mill churning out some interesting nuggets in the form of an early 2023 Xbox showcase, release date candidates for Starfield and Redfall, and even hints of what's to come later in the year; there is much to be excited about. Both official outlets and reports are suggesting that a Starfield-Redfall duo for May/June can soon be upon us. With that in mind, Xbox fans must adjust to a new reality. A reality where blockbuster games are being delivered and thanks to that the conversation will change. In the spirit of preparation, The Dukes take a hard look at the first half of 2023 where Xbox can finally leave their long awaited mark on the industry. However, we must also ask: What if they don't deliver? It is all these angles and more that we prepare for in today's episode on top of more on Hellblade 2, Deathloop, Persona 3 Remake, and much, much more. Thanks to our sponsors!
