Let's plays are among the most popular genres on YouTube. The visual worlds of video games shape the worldviews of millions. Gaming is a hobby and a mass spectacle. For a long time, the history of video games was primarily one of technical progress: from pixelated figures in 2D to increasingly convincing illusions of reality in games like Control. At the same time, independent game worlds emerge, such as in the expressionist dystopia Disco Elysium. In Video Games: Digital Image Cultures (Videospiele: Digitale Bildkulturen), Jacob Birken vividly analyzes the different types and generations of games, provides insights into the interaction of hardware and software, and shows how newer video games stylistically reference the past of their own medium. But does this also revive the unfulfilled promises of the future of the information society? Jacob Birken writes and researches on the history, aesthetics, and theory of media technologies. In 2018, he published "The California Institution" on the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. He currently works at the UAS Düsseldorf and the University of Cologne. Rudolf Inderst is a professor of Game Design with a focus on Digital Game Studies at the IU International University of Applied Science, editor of “Game Studies Watchlist”, a weekly messenger newsletter about Game Culture and curator of @gamestudies at tiktok. This week I'm joined by my great friend Dave Jackson to talk about one of the coolest CRPGS to ever come out of Estonia! (I challenge any of my listeners to name more games than this which actually originated from that country) Dave gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his show, Tales from the Backlog, and gives our viewers a peek into his gaming and content approach. This is a special one folks. You're going to hear from me about this game again. Without a doubt this is already in my GOTY contention. The gang got together and played Disco Elysium this month and WOW. What a game it was. Corrigan took the month off and subbed in her partner, Kyo Edmoundson, and it was great getting his thoughts on the game. Hope you enjoy this meandering conversation where covered just about everything in this 2-hour episode and it still felt like we barely scratched the surface of this super-detailed and mega-dense game. Enjoy! We start off with some intros and big idea stuff then finally set up the game and setting (19:40) before getting into the development and more recent company news (29:10). After that we dive deeper into the gameplay with a few spoilers eventually (43:00 ish) before playing a resounding round of "What's The Drink? What's The Song?" (1:24:45). Then we take a visit to the Recommendation Station (1:45:50) and pick next mont's game at the VERY end of the pod. Whew! What an episode. Thanks again to Kyo for joining us! Thanks again for listening to the show! James and Jon on this one. James is still exhibiting his detective skills in Disco Elysium as well as playing Mother. Turns out Mother isn't about mothers at all but rather a humorous game in which a boy named Ninten battles aliens and brainwashed individuals! Who knew?! Jon, on the other hand, loves mediocrity and is thus playing and thoroughly enjoying Biomutant! Whoa! Lots of video game news! Ubisoft's on the rocks, the QA workers who made Skyrim are organizing and lots more. Plus Tori's playing a J-pop game and Noah's playing Disco Elysium, which is decidedly not a J-pop game. THINGS MENTIONED: QA workers at ZeniMax Media organized from TechCrunch. Rumor has it that a Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch is on its way. TheGamer asks whether the Breath of the Wild sequel will be the last major Switch game. This great tweet about Final Fantasy from Ash Parrish on Twitter. videogamedunkey's publishing house, Big Mode, announces its first game, Animal Well. Kotaku reports Ubisoft is having a rough time. Also from Kotaku: the next Assassin's Creed will be smaller. Polygon's most anticipated indie games for 2023. The Origin Story podcast on the game Venba. This week, we're joined by GameSpot's Lucy James as we discuss Squanch Games' joke-packed first-person shooter High on Life. How many full-belly chuckles did we experience during our time alien bounty hunting? Also, can J.B. Smoove do voices in every game? Also discussed: Disco Elysium, 100 Ft. Robot Golf, Towerfall, Overcooked, Portal 2, The Stanley Parable, Prey, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, The Past Within, Outpath: First Journey, Dragon Quest IXNote: The day after we recorded this episode and just hours before it went live, NBC News reported that Justin Roiland, the head of High on Life developer Squanch Games, is facing charges of domestic battery and false imprisonment. After a lot of debate, we decided to still publish the episode as is because we thought it wouldn't be fair to the other people at Squanch Games, to our guest for this episode Lucy James, and to our listeners, to just not publish the episode. When our discussion doesn't mention this alleged, abhorrent behavior, we wanted you to understand why. If you or someone you love is experiencing domestic abuse, help is available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-7233. Not a single person is ready for 2023, but guess what! It's happening anyway! Time is kind of a dick like that. So Kat, Nadia, and Eric just steel themselves this week and take the full-bodied plunge back into work. That's why this week's episode is refreshing, but there's also a small chance it'll stop your heart. This week's main topic of discussion comes from one of the Blood God's most devout $50 Patreon tier disciples, Knot Hollow, who wants to know what the next decade of RPGs will look like. Well, the Blood God crew has takes, guesses, and ideas. More games like Disco Elysium? Perhaps. More games like Genshin Impact? Maybe. How about Elden Ring? Almost certainly. Come back in a decade for the opportunity to point and laugh about how wrong Kat, Nadia, and Eric were. Also in this episode: Fire Emblem: Engage isn't out yet, but it's already generating takes (and not just about the heroes' Aquafresh toothpaste hair) Pocket Card Jockey lives! It has not been put down like a spent racehorse after all! One billion years later, Nadia's finally watching Archer It's the birth of a new segment! The Blood God team goes back and re-evaluates former Pantheon entries and candidates! This week: Will Lufia 2 be granted mercy? Very special thanks to Knot Hollow for their support, and for the support of all the Blood God faithful out there!
It's a brand new year and I'm starting it with a relaxed fit episode. I'm putting down the controllers, shelving the games and answering your questions! Gaming detectives Michael, Josh and Paul are doing a Disco Elysium Double Take. Touted as one of the most acclaimed RPG's of all time, we break down our thoughts on this often obscure gaming legend in a special holiday gaming double take. Don't be put off by the lack of combat in Disco Elysium. This is a game that needs to be experienced by gamers. This time on Video Game Tango, Netease blames some jerk for not having WoW in China any more, The Disco Elysium lawsuit is just now putting on it's dancing shoes, Call of Duty will probably continue coming to Playstation, Valheim's Mistlands update brings more fun and magic to the game, Starfield isn't going to require you siphon gas from your neighbors just to play a little longer, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet might be good games, but the best bits still haven't loaded in.
Motherboard's Matthew Gault joins the Waypoint crew for a lengthy breakdown of God of War Ragnarök, after Patrick and Matthew have spent 15 hours looking for answers on how to right the wrongs of the past in Midgard. Elsewhere, Ren's spent time with a beautifully violent game (Ghost Song) and a beautifully hard game (The Iron Oath). Towards the end, we process the latest developments at Disco Elysium studio ZA/UM, and Rob pours one out for the end of The Project CARS franchise, Then a very quick dip into the Question Bucket. It happened: Elon Musk ordered that thing from Amazon late at night and then it arrived at his home and it wasn't what he expected but it was too late to return it. In other words, he owns Twitter now, but we'd rather not talk about the implications of that. Instead, let's talk about the memes spawned from this historic transaction. Also, we talk about the lawsuit surrounding Disco Elysium. May the pale wash away Elon & ZA/UM's sins. This week on Axe of the Blood God, Kat, Nadia, and Eric talk about CD Projekt Red's (overly?) optimistic road map for the future of Cyberpunk 2077 and the Witcher series. Looks like CD Projekt is working hard to repair Cyberpunk's tarnished reputation in addition to making new games set in worlds that lack indoor plumbing. It's a long and winding road that's sure to be full of challenges, and we salute CD Projekt for assuming we're still going to be here in a decade. Always look on the bright side of life! Also in this episode: We're really behind on the new batch of RPGs. Sorry, we're trying to fix it :( Disco Elysium developer ZA/UM is going through difficult times Autumn of Avatar continues as we delve deep into Book Two Nadia electrocuted a lemon to go see the 1993 Super Mario movie in theatres POST SHOW Hey, Paisanos! Nadia and Eric talk about the new Super Mario Bros. movie trailer. Seems this movie might be fun and charming after all, even if Chris Pratt's flat-tire voice still isn't a great choice for everyone's favorite feisty plumber. Eh, I think we're all in agreement that Jack Black's Bowser is going to carry the movie, anyway. Available exclusively to subscribers in our Stars of Destiny tier!
This week, we did battle with the Overwatch 2 launch (and lost), got lost in the giant Grounded backyard, checked out the closed alpha of The Finals, said a preemptive goodbye to Stadia, stared in bafflement at anime Need for Speed, and took our very last opportunity to speculate about Chris Pratt's Mario voice. It's been a busy week for gaming news, from shakeups at ZA/UM, the studio behind Disco Elysium, to rumors of a Horizon Zero Dawn remake, and the acquisition by Fandom of various websites, including Giant Bomb and GameFAQs. After the break, Rob realizes he might've have made a mistake the first time he played Isonso, Patrick is enjoying working through trauma via dream dodgeball in Desta, and Ren is praying that more indie horror devs let vibes carry them instead of chases and puzzles in The Fridge is Red.
