In this episode, Tim and Joel conclude their list of most impactful games played in 2020. Again, these aren't all games made this year, but they are all games that impacted us deeply over the course of the last twelve months. Awards List, Part 2: Deus Ex: Human Revolution got “best immersive sim” from Joel. Objects in Space got “most intense space game” from Tim. Mark of the Ninja got “best stealth game” from Joel. Where the Water Tastes Like Wine got “most unique gameplay experience” from Tim Call of Duty: Warzone got “most splodey” from both Tim and Joel; or at least, the version of it wherein we run exploding crossbows and rocket launchers in Plunder mode does. Katana Zero and Ghostrunner got “best pick up and play” from Joel. Return of the Obra Dinn got “most intricate / best document UI” from Tim. Both Elite: Dangerous and Hardspace: Shipbreaker got special mentions this year as games we spent an enormous amount of time in and enjoyed greatly (and have discussed a great deal in our space game and UI episodes). To no one's surprise at all, our Game of the Year for 2020 is Hunt: Showdown. Not only is it a great game from a purely critical standpoint, but in an age of quarantine and lockdown, it is the one game that has been great for both our friendship and our sanity through round after round (and squad wipe after squad wipe).

Today’s guest on the “Phil with Forbes 30” podcast is Zhenghua Yang – Founder of Serenity Forge Forbes List: USA Year: 2020 Category: Games Can you imagine suddenly getting sick and being told you will probably die within hours? You survive and stay in a hospital as every experimental method is thrown at your body to save your life for an illness not identified. You slowly recuperate, continue working at the Federal Reserve and go to college simultaneously. You have lunch with then Chairman of the Federal Reserve Dr. Ben Bernanke, save someone’s life with a computer game you created, get validation on another game from both Bill Nye the Science Guy and astronaut Buzz Aldrin. My guest, Zhenghua Yang did all this before graduating college!   His story of starting his game development and publishing studio called, “Serenity Forge” is as unique as its purpose of creating games that are a vital part of art, culture and education. The studio released its critically acclaimed titles “Where the Water Tastes Like Wine” in 2018, as well as “Lifeless Planet” in 2014, which sold more than a half million copies. His team just launched the new psychological adventure game “Neversong,” which is on Apple Arcade, Steam and consoles. The projected revenue for the studio’s games for good are projected to reach $1.2 million in revenues this year. Zhenghua and I spoke about how his life and death moments as a young man, continues to influence all of his work and life philosophy. And we discussed all the misconceptions of the game industry, which is an-eye opener. I hope you enjoy and learn from Zhenghua’s journey to personal contentment and financial success as much as I have. It’s an incredible story. Check out his new game: “NeverSong” on Apple Arcade, Steam, and Consoles. “Under 30 Seconds Round” 1. What is the book you’ve gifted more often than any other book, and why? The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor. That book changed my life. 2. What’s one of the best investments and one of the worst investments you’ve ever made and why? Best - There are specific people that I work with today that are just so pivotal to where we are right now as certainly forward.  Worst - I drank the Kool Aid and made bitcoin investments at its height. 3. What’s the most impactful thing you do in your Morning routine and most impactful thing you do in your Evening routine? AM - I host a little mini Chinese tea ceremony for myself to clear my mind and get the day going. PM - I pull up some kind of mobile game and just play in bed and then fall asleep to it. I don’t recommend that to everyone listening. 4. Pretend you won the Peter Thiel Fellowship and you were going to get money to start a business instead of go to college, what’s the very first thing you’d do to start a new business? I would make sure I build lifelong work relationships. That's how you really find success in today's corporate world. 5. What’s something you never knew you needed? Bone Conduction Headphones In the REVIEW SECTION, please let me know… The city / country you’re tuning in from! How Zhenghua Yang’s story has inspired you! And, your favorite part of this episode! We discuss frame stories in games like Outer Wilds, Gone Home, and Return of the Obra Dinn, and how these stories are uniquely suited to being told in the medium of a game. We finish by discussing story itself as a gameplay mechanic in Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, and what might be possible (and not possible) down the road there. Well, I got no companion ’cept the wind and the sea and when I’m cold and empty they’re the ones who’ll bury me. Well, I’m gonna cast my stones o’er the waters of this land, and by and by I’ll see them far and long, and when the night come down for to take me hand in hand this will be my tale, my Vagrant Song. Is a man not entitled to the turn of his table? YES says the crew of the Video Game Grooves podcast, so would you kindly join us for our latest episode?   Joining us in Anthony's place for this episode is Tom Quillfeldt, returning from the Laced Records "Laced With Wax" blog. Tom takes us under the sea to enrapture us with Rapture, and the vinyl release of "I am Rapture, Rapture is Me", the soundtrack to Bioshock by 2K Games, composed by Garry Schyman. We explore some of the divergent and diegetical tracks of the failed utopia and clues us in to the secret lyric that we've been singing all along.. Jeremy's pick is on the other end of the utopian scale, as he presents us with Stardew Valley, by ConcernedApe and released by Gamer's Edition. The extremely melodic double-LP release with its sunshiney outlook and whimsical album art (THAT DUCKY!) brings us back into the sunlight, as Paul illuminates us to a few secrets behind the production of the album. For our second segment, we harvest the latest news from around the web, and figure out the new releases that you may need to buy by the sweat of your brow. But remember: a man chooses, a slave obeys. In our final segment we discuss the dichotomy of "standard" composed music on vinyl compared to more novelty or creative releases, and how our preferences affect our outlooks on a number of albums, including Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, the Metal Gear Rising vocal releases and other more novel concepts. We enter Hope County this week with Far Cry 5. Does this game deliver on the promises or is Ubisoft finally reaching the end of the road? Brett also plays a simple little mobile game called Florence from Annapurna Pictures. Our news this week covers Sea of Thieves being the best-selling new IP on this generation of the Xbox, new content coming from Pokemon Go and No Man's Sky and the drop in price of the Playstation VR. Our discussion this week is on the unfortunate state of experimental indie games. Games that push the bar but can't reach the right audience. With the recent post-mortem from Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, we talk about ways indie developers (from a gamer perspective) can better reach people with their game. This week the team is snowed in. So let’s talk about the weather. Blizzards, thunderclouds, sandstorms and, er, night-time? All of it classifies as weather to us if it appears in a game. Adam likes being warm while looking out at the frosty cold in survival game The Long Dark. And Brendan likes the blizzards of Viking strategy game Northgard and the foggy, windless days of sailing sim Sailaway. John, however, thinks the weather should stop. There’s no reason why everything should be covered in smog, nor our hands and feet detached from the cliffside by Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s annoying rain. But we've also been playing lots. Assassin's Creed: Origins, Vagante, All Walls Must Fall, Orwell: Ignorance Is Strength, Street Fighter V, and Where The Water Tastes Like Wine - all come under scrutiny.
