Chris and Elecia chat with each other about motor encoder reading methods, conferences coming up, soldering irons, schematic reviews, looking for a new job, and general life.  Some conferences coming up in the embedded space: Embedded Online, April 29-May 4, virtual (Elecia will be speaking) Open Hardware Summit in May 3-4, Montreal, Canada Embedded World in April 9-11 in Nuremburg, Germany Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories was purchased by Bantam Tools! Starter soldering irons? It seemed like small pen-style ones were more popular than big soldering stations. See the Adafruit USB C Powered Soldering Iron - Adjustable Temperature Pen-Style - TS80P. Or for much less (but you can write your own firmware!), the Pinecil. And one vote for the RT Soldering Pen on Tindie because it uses Weller RT tips (which are more expensive than the soldering pen but much less expensive than the Weller station that uses the RT tips).  Embedded Artistry has excellent advice for the role of the firmware in schematic reviews.  Adafruit Playgrounds looks like a neat place to write up your project.  Transcript Nordic Semiconductor empowers wireless innovation, by providing hardware, software, tools and services that allow developers to create the IoT products of tomorrow. Learn more about Nordic Semiconductor at nordicsemi.com, check out the DevAcademy at academy.nordicsemi.com and interact with the Nordic Devzone community at devzone.nordicsemi.com.

Alexandra Covor spoke with us about engineering, making, drawing, school, and what it means to be an artist.  Alex's projects are on GitHub and Hackster.io. Her electronics comics can be found as PikaComics on Instagram. The 2022 Open Hardware Summit named Alex as part of the Ada Lovelace Fellowship. Her favorite talk from the summit was Anuradha Reddy talking about Knotty (Naughty) Hardware. Alex works for Zalmotek, a design services firm in Bucharest. We talked about Waylay.io, including their smart pet feeder built on that platform. For example projects for Edge Impulse, they built a tools organizer that uses ML. Transcript

Today's guest is Ayah Bdeir, a Lebanese engineer, interactive artist, social activist, and founder and inventor of littleBits.  Pioneering in the open source hardware space, littleBits is the easy-to-use electronic building blocks used by millions of kids all over the world and was acquired by Sphero in 2019. (The prototype also holds a place in the permanent collection at MoMA).Growing up in Beirut, Ayah always had a deep love of design and engineering and focused her career making engineering fun whilst on democratising open source hardware to ensure tech education and innovation became accessible to all, regardless of age, gender or background. Her passion was always to make it accessible and encourage more girls to get excited about engineering. She is also co-founder of the Open Hardware Summit, a TED Senior Fellow, and an alumna of the MIT Media Lab where she did her Masters. In this conversation, Ayah and I discuss her passion for engineering and making it accessible, her call to activism in Lebanon and even, the significance of someone like Elon Musk owning Twitter and the impact it could have. This is a wonderfully wide-ranging conversation which I thoroughly enjoyed and think you will too.-------Ayah Bdeir Twitter / Instagram / websitelittleBits websiteDanielle Twitter / Instagram / Newsletter----------As always, if you like the show, please do take a minute to write a review or hit the subscribe button so that you can be the first to hear all the new episodes before everyone else.

We hope this podcast is of value to the you as the situation unfolds. We wish all of our followers and listeners their health and safety at this time. Please reach out @ShawnHymel or @HarrisKenny if there is anything they can do for you. One Powerful Quotation: * 26:00 – “If you’re a business owner or you’re a CEO, I think this is an appropriate time to practice good interpersonal management with your people. I would say don’t try to panic people… But in the same sense, be honest. Be upfront. This is a scary situation we are looking at.” Key Topics: * 1:00 – Shawn and Harris open the show with how they are dealing with their self-quarantine and social distancing. They admit they are fortunate with being able to work from home and mention of how many Americans cannot. 4:00 – Shawn and Harris talk about the content marketing strategy from big brands in response to the coronavirus. Shawn says many have taken a bare minimum approach with large email outreaches, and they each give their take on what companies are doing that works. 6:50 — Shawn considers making his online Arduino course free for a period of time and the value of offering free learning tools to everyone. Harris agrees with this, and they delve into how some organizations/events have handled this situation better or worse than others. 10:40 — Shawn and Harris describe their experience attending the online Open Hardware Summit. They highlight their virtual experience with attendee engagement and how presenters are able to format their activities with polling, online streaming, etc. for future events. Harris notes that presenting this way is a skill set and a great opportunity to grow your business. 20:08 — Shawn asks Harris his opinion on what small business can do to alleviate some of their problems. Harris says they should assess their short/long term risk by trying to increase inventory supply and focus on diversifying their offerings such as consulting or starting a new project. He mentions that this is only optimal if cash is available, and your business is in a position to take on more work. 22:24 —Shawn and Harris discuss how operators can pivot to using a local distributor/supplier to continue running their business. They offer their opinions on how owners should handle this crisis and implement interpersonal management to everyone. 27:16 — Harris inquires with Shawn on how he handles his own personal management at home and with work. 29:50 — Shawn and Harris share with listeners their views on how organizations/institutions now have a larger responsibility to give value to others as a sign of empathy and compassion. 37:45 —Shawn and Harris surmise that investment opportunities and industry trends will change as a result to the evident economic turmoil. 41:30 — Shawn and Harris wrap up the show with their final thoughts to everyone.
