Can startups truly innovate by partnering with corporate giants, or as Dr. Shameen Prashantham puts it, “dancing with gorillas”? In this episode, Dr. Prashantham, professor of International Business & Strategy at the China Europe International Business School, joins Alex Raymond to share his research on corporate-startup partnerships. They explore how these collaborations have evolved, emphasizing the shift towards equity-based models and the critical role of non-equity partnerships in fostering innovation. Dr. Prashantham stresses the importance of startups balancing optimism and caution when engaging with large companies. He advises focusing on core expertise and being strategic about revealing information to maintain leverage. Success stories like Techstars-backed Sphero's partnership with Disney to create the BB-8 droid and Microsoft's rise in the startup ecosystem illustrate the power of these collaborations. The episode also delves into the democratization of partnerships, highlighting sustainability and positive impact initiatives. Dr. Prashantham underscores the necessity of complex arrangements involving city governments, NGOs, and United Nations agencies to tackle societal challenges. He showcases how startups can drive meaningful outcomes through innovative solutions, leveraging their unique strengths to create a global positive impact. Quotes “Essentially, the insight was that you could bring together managers from big companies and entrepreneurs from startups to achieve something beyond what either could do on their own. Having studied many companies in different parts of the world and different industries, I realized that, knowingly or unknowingly, they were addressing what I call the paradox of asymmetry. On one hand, you have a potential win-win situation between these two different sets of companies, each having something the other lacks. Startups, for example, have agility, while big companies have scale.” (09:51 | Dr. Shameen Prashantham) “The big advantage of working with a large company is leveraging economies of scope to build partnerships across different units and regions. By being proactive and seeking introductions, startups can gain champions within the corporation. Many have benefited, but it's crucial to keep future options open.” (27:54 | Dr. Shameen Prashantham) “For me, the idea that very different, asymmetric actors and nontraditional partners can come together is key. In terms of startups, particularly those leveraging digital technology, this is making a huge difference in many areas, helping people who are not privileged enough to have access to real-time information.” (39:26 | Dr. Shameen Prashantham) Links Connect with Dr. Shameen Prashantham: Book: https://www.gorillascandance.com/ Connect with Alex Raymond: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/afraymond/ Website: https://consciousentrepreneur.us/ HiveCast.fm is a proud sponsor of The Conscious Entrepreneur Podcast. In this episode, we explore ways to find balance amidst overwhelming AI trends. We kick things off with visionary Don Carson from Mighty Coconut Studios speculating about the imminent arrival of prompt-driven VR worlds that might resemble the Holodeck from Star Trek. Then we dig into the first key concept - the extended mind. Elliot Felix explains philosopher Andy Clark's theory that thinking extends beyond our brains into the spaces and objects around us. To demonstrate, Mike records while out walking in nature and while exploring a new VR Mini Golf world, describing how the environment impacts his mental state. We conclude by hearing from Dr. Natalia Kucirkova on her research into sensory learning and the hidden senses as we round out our discussion of the Extended Mind. The second key concept we dig into is deliberate play which Mike picked up in Adam Grant's new book Hidden Potential. Mike emphasizes the importance of play for learning and bonding. We include a clip from our conversation with Sphero's Michelle Acaley joining Mike and his wife Dr. Robin Naughton as we discuss their new coding toy, Indi, that teaches kids coding concepts through play and off of screens. Finally, we close with the perspective of Mike Acerra of Lux Blox, who offers alternate views on childhood development and the role of nature. He prompts reflection on how experiences in natural settings shape kids' brains. Overall, this episode explores ideas like the extended mind and deliberate play to find balance amidst AI. Let us know what you think of these concepts for countering AI overload and restoring mental space. Looking forward to continuing the conversation! Tod Johnston, a Senior Education Content Manager at Sphero, discusses how his company uses robots to teach cybersecurity concepts to middle school students. Their robotic balls help students visualize abstract cybersecurity topics like man-in-the-middle attacks. Tod explains how they developed lessons in collaboration with cybersecurity experts to give students an initial understanding of cyber threats and how to act responsibly online. Tod hopes to expand these lessons to younger students in the future. The discussion also touches on the challenges of educating both students and adults about cybersecurity given that technology is evolving rapidly and privacy policies are often difficult to understand. Sphero - Blueprint- basics of engineering Educators need to think about cybersecurity from a student's perspective, rather than a technology perspective. We should be inviting students to learn about their privacy policies to help them make better choices. Sphero programmable balls are good for teaching programmable, algorithmic skills, but it's always difficult to teach cybersecurity. An example of a man in the middle attack Can't damage other people's property Student in Miami-Dade who hacked the school district. Sphero- one of the first companies to consumerize robotics- was still hunting for the right business model when the Walt Disney Company came knocking with a life-changing proposition. Sphero was offered the opportunity to build the BB-8, which would become the #1 toy in the world- in partnership with Disney. In this episode, Paul Berberian- the former CEO of Sphero- breaks down how he helped shepherd the company through this transformative opportunity and towards a new vision, mission and 10x revenues. We learn: Why consensus-building is a core skill needed for a manager, How traction is sometimes a strong substitute for culture, and Why saying no to opportunity is sometimes better in the long run for a business. Ian Bernstein may not be a household name, yet, but ask anyone about Sphero, the robot ball he invented and you'll instantly get nods of recognition. Most recently, Ian founded Misty Robotics to deliver a true robotics platform that can be used by individuals and businesses to explore the possibilities of robotics. We discuss how Misty has been used by organizations tracking temperatures for COVID, air quality during the historic 2020 fire season, and even its use as a magician's assistant.

It's hard to say precisely how Sphero's pivot to education is going in these early stages, but it recently got an infusion of funding and is already out acquiring new startups. The BB-8 maker announced this morning that it's picked up Specdrums — the fellow Boulder, Co-based startup is a Kickstarter success story that lets users create music with an app connected ring.

In this episode I had an insightful discussion with Kane Pittard. Kane is a Humanities and computer science teacher from Butler College in Butler, WA. He is responsible for the creation and ongoing development of the Butler College IT teaching program. Kane's passion is using digital learning across all learning areas. Previous to becoming a teacher in 2013, he worked as a systems administrator and owned computer consulting business. I would to thank Kane for taking time away from his family, work, and fighting the time difference to talk with me on the podcast. If you've paid any attention to home robotics over the past decade, you've probably noticed one thing: all home robots are basically single function devices that vacuum our rugs or roll around on the floor. But Misty Robotics' Tim Enwall hopes to change that. You may remember Tim from his days as CEO of Revolv, the company behind the super hub that included seven radios. After spending a couple years at Nest after they acquired Revolv, he made his way over to another Boulder, Colorado company in Sphero to head up the company's home robot spinout. You can find out more about Misty Robotics at www.mistyrobotics.com As always, check out more podcasts and our coverage of the future of the connected kitchen at The Spoon: www.thespoon.tech http://knit.audio/podcast-advertising (via Knit)

In 2015, Sphero convinced you to fork over $200 for a tiny BB-8 that was—even for adults—pretty entertaining. Now it hopes you'll pay $299 for an app-controlled version of Lightning McQueen, the hero of the Pixar franchise Cars. The toy goes on sale online today, and will hit the shelves of stores like Target and Best Buy on June 15, just before Cars 3 premiers in theaters. Is it cheap? No. But McQueen comes packed with more features than the average action figure.
