Married. Kids. Pets. Co-Founder of a renowned music PR firm. Needless to say, Chris Vinyard is a busy, busy person. After a decade plus at the venerable music publicity and marketing firm Big Hassle Media, Chris decided to start his own firm with colleague Tito Belis, but, as Chris says, not with any intention for world domination. In fact, as he's progressed further into his career and his family has grown, he's found that living in the moment and moving forward matters more than anything that's in his rearview. "Try to find other things that you can invest yourself in, so you're not just reliant upon this one aspect of culture, or scene, to fulfill you. Because you'll get tired of it, and it'll become rote for you. You'll get burnt out on it."Over the years, Chris has worked with and represented artists, events, and organizations such as The Governors Ball Music Festival, Robert Plant, Kings of Leon, American Football, Major League Baseball, Third Man Records, The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Outside Lands Music Festival, and many others.
My name is Avery Baker and welcome to a podcast series about music festivals. From best scenes to craziest stories to best festival practices, I love talking about festivals. In the inaugural episode on the Total Culture Festival Series, I sit down with good friend Olivia Cano. Back when we were freshmen in college, Olivia convinced me to go to Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco for the first time. Six years later and Olivia has been to OSL every year since, while I've gone 5 out of the last 6 years. Safe to say, it has become a tradition in our friendship. This episode was recorded in January of 2020. Some things may have changed by the time you hear this.

Dave Maclean is back on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter. Steve opens by mentioning that Dave has sold Magnolia Brewing, which he started in 1997. Also in is Baron Ziegler of Banshee Wines. Dave’s new company is Admiral Malting. They turn raw barley into malt that brewers need to make beer. They use an old traditional practice called floor malting, where they lay it out on the floor. They sell to a lot of local brewers. Until now there has not been access to local barley malt. Mark Carpenter notes that almost all commercial cereals have malted grain, which has more flavor, and that today they will taste some beer from Seismic that used Dave’s malt. It is called Alluvium Pilsner from Seismic Brewery. It just won a Silver Medal at the California State Fair. It will be one of the beer featured at Outside Lands Music Festival. The other beer is a Pilsner, also from Seismic. Herlinda points out that any local brewery would want to source their Most or all of the malt would come from England or Germany or Canada or the upper Midwest. This is the first time that local California brewers can access malt that is made from locally grown grain. Baron Ziegler of Banshee Wines has brought a Pinot Noir that they make using sustainable and organic practices. They also make Chardonnay. They have a tasting room in Healdsburg. They produce their wine in a shared facility called Sugarloaf. The Outside Lands music festival will have about 65,000 people and more than 20 different breweries. Dave feels that it does a good job of capturing a sense of place, with all local food and local breweries and wineries.
