With a week to go to the Nene Valley Rock Festival, held in the grounds of the magnificent Grimsthorpe Castle from 4th -7th September 2025, Progzilla’s roving reporter TV’s Roger Marsh recently chatted with two of the Festival Directors … Andrew Little and Tony Castle about this year’s event.
Interview by Kris PetersAfter championing the cause for Australian music for almost a decade via their weekly radio show, Rock Hard With Phil & Tish, the two co-hosts have decided to take the next step in their evolution, putting on the first-ever Rock Hard Festival in Adelaide. For two nights over October 10 and 11, Woodshed at Royal Park will host Aussie rock legends The Poor, headlining both nights with a selection of some of this country's hottest emerging bands such as Audio Reign, Karly Jewell, The Dreadful Tides, Ablaze, Avalanche and more. Not content to help grow and nurture homegrown talent over just the airwaves, Phil & Tish have decided to give the band a bigger platform from which to show their wares in the first of what is hoped to be a long-running annual concert event.HEAVY recently sat down with Phil & Tish, who were understandably a bit nervous with their roles as radio hosts/interviewers reversed."We have a radio show on PBA FM every Wednesday night," Phil explained, setting the mood. "It's been going for about seven, eight years and is called Rock Hard with Phil and Tish, and we try to rock.""Yeah, PBA FM every Wednesday night," Tish reiterated. "We are 9pm Australian Central Standard Time, and we are your local insane metalheads. We're very much a variety show of heavy and hard rock."We bring up the excellent line-up and ask what their selection process was when deciding who to book."We picked all bands we have relationships with over the journey," Phil measured. "We're fans of… I mean, The Poor… I was 14 when I got into them, and Skenie (vocalist) was the first interview I did where I actually reached out to someone that I grew up enjoying their music, and I thought I'll shoot him a message. I thought, I'm gonna fire a shot and see what he says, and a couple of weeks later he came back, and he said I'd love to have a chat, and I chatted to him for about an hour on the show. Because I'm such a fan - and when you're 14, they're like larger-than-life rock stars - and to think he's having a chat on our show probably opened up the courage for me to approach other bands and stuff that we've loved. Literally every band that we've got on this festival are just great Aussie bands, and we're so stoked that they've agreed to play."In the full interview, Phil and Tish shared insights into their planning for Rock Hard Festival, emphasizing their commitment to showcasing Australian talent and the challenges they faced in curating a lineup that reflects their personal relationships with the artists. They expressed excitement about the festival's potential, particularly with the inclusion of local bands and the overwhelming interest from musicians wanting to participate, as well as the scheduling of two nights of live entertainment and the reasonable ticket prices. They highlighted the festival's unique offerings, such as a special beer crafted by Beer No Evil and the decision to have The Poor headline both nights. We discussed the significance of including acts like Audio Reign, who were the first band interviewed in their studio, as well as their radio show Rock Hard and how and why they got into a radio career based in music, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Roger has a new job working in a Sheffield record shop, and cannot quite believe the amount of free stuff the stores receives from the reps of the big record companies, who are very keen to curry favour. 45s, promo albums, T-shirts and badges. Also free were tickets to see Echo & The Bunnymen at a one day festival held outdoors at York Racecourse. So Roger saddled up and went along for the ride. With thanks to Marc Jones and Nick Robinson.Edited by Nigel Floyd.Intro and outro music by Simon Elliott-Kemp.Artwork by Rionagh.Sound FX courtesy of Freesound.org, with particular thanks to:Jacqueline Kohrs - shop ambience.Canuk FA - horses.Yuval - distant music festival ambience.Uber Produktion - drum machine.NN Audio - choir.Herbert Boland - brushed snare.Valentin Sosnitskiy - post-punk guitar.Zagic 2 - indie rock loop.Sounds Like Willem - crowd cheering.Send us a textNever miss an episode.Follow me at: Blue Sky @rogerquail.bsky.socialYouTube https://www.youtube.com/@rogerquailReddit u/TheMoshOfGhostsFacebook https://www.facebook.com/roger.quail.3Instagram https://www.instagram.com/rogerquailRSS feed - https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/289673.rss
Back in 1970, inspired by the success of Woodstock, a couple of enterprising Akron lads decided to bring a rock festival to Akron. Filled with peace and love, featuring bands such as the Byrds, Canned Heat, the Rascals, Alice Cooper, and others, the Piper Rock Festival would be one of the biggest concert events ever to happen in NE Ohio…. That is, until “The Man” got word of what was happening….. A classic tale of idealism, bureaucracy, money, rain and mud, the Piper Rock Festival is the stuff of legend. As is our guest, Ernie Passeos! Well known in the area for his Harley-Davidson dealership and community good works, Ernie was one of those idealistic entrepreneurs trying to bring the good vibes to Akron in 1970. Join us for a hilarious and fun look back, and ahead, with the remarkable Ernie Passeos!

There is an old saying that “Money Only Makes You More,” and a great example of this are the founding members of Guns & Roses. More drugs and alcohol use, more attitude and inner band squabbling with more fights is what you got as the members of G&R grew richer. Albums: Appetite For Destruction and the Use Your Illusion I & II brought fans from everywhere, but fans often times got more than what they paid for. Getting into more confrontations with leader Axel Rose, which led to more show cancellations, more altercations, more riots and more destruction. In 1988, Guns & Roses was labeled as The Most Dangerous Band in the World after some fans were trampled and crushed to death at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Donington England. This title was never removed. Axel Rose was a Diva in the worst way, Slash and Drummer Steven Adler had near life ending drug addictions. Most Dangerous Band was just one way to define Guns & Roses, but not only way. To learn more, press play.
I'm now backstage and the group will take care of me.
People in the audience have discovered my secret and are taking advantage of me. I tell my boyfriend to get us some beers so I can enjoy my new friends.
At the Rock Festival I got painted as Catwoman, it really looks like I'm wearing a costume when in fact I'm wearing nothing at all, will my boyfriend notice?

Bayside High School in Queens, New York began an early celebration of its 80th anniversary, making it one of the oldest public schools in the five boroughs. At a ceremony Saturday, U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing), state Assemblyman Ed Braunstein (D-Bayside) and state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) gathered with students, staff and alumni of the storied school to mark the occasion. The lawmakers presented proclamations declaring the importance of the school and the significance of the anniversary.Opened in 1936, and built during the Great Depression, Bayside High School was the first in the city to be constructed with federal funds from the New Deal-era Public Works Administration. The school cost $2.5 million.Gregg Sullivan, chairman of the Friends of Bayside High School, ran through many of the great historical events the school had borne witness to.“This school takes us through a number of great human events,” he said. “The Great Depression, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and the J.F.K. assassination. The school was also home to the very first Folk and Rock Concert to benefit education in Native American schools in the United States as produced by student Rich Buckland. The historical significance of the school, and its 80 years as a single entity, were themes each speaker touched on.“You have to love what Bayside has been and is for the community,” Avella said. “It is a historic school.”Principal Michael Athy, speaking about his vision of the school—past, present and future—said the success of Bayside is due to its legacy as one of the most rigorous and community-oriented schools in the city.

Legendary NWOBHM disc-jockey Neal Kay, who was an important factor in the rise of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM), along with Tommy Vance, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, joins us on The Loaded Radio Podcast Between 1975 and 1980, Neal managed the rock club known as "The Bandwagon Heavy Metal Soundhouse", which catered to the burgeoning genre that we know today as heavy metal. With help from the music papers of the day, "Sounds" and "Melody Maker", Neal established the venue as the location for new upcoming bands and like minded fans of the heavy metal genre. Band demo tapes started to arrive in droves after a two-page article in "Sounds", penned by journalist Geoff Barton. Kay had one of the biggest club sound systems ever seen at the time, being an 8000 watt PA, comprising mainly JBL/Martin speakers and coach built JPS associates amps. The PA was so loud that the mixing desk was "flown" on chains, suspended from the roof to help avoid feedback from the record decks. Kay would often be found at massive heavy metal gigs at venues like the Rainbow Theatre and Hammersmith Odeon, and would eventually hit the road with such iconic acts as BLACK SABBATH, RUSH, AC/DC, JUDAS PRIEST and countless others. Neal was he first high level touring rock DJ of his time. Kay would also assist in arranging and producing demos of new heavy metal bands, recorded at Spaceward Studios in Cambridge. Amongst these acts were SAXON, PRAYING MANTIS and IRON MAIDEN. He championed these and other acts, and went on to tour with those bands on full UK treks. The resulting popularity of IRON MAIDEN's recording led to a record contract for them with EMI. Several other NWOBHM bands also got contracts due to their Soundhouse demos. Kay worked with EMI Records compiling many of these demos onto an album called "Metal for Muthas", of which several volumes were released. In 1980, he was the MC for the very first Monsters of Rock Festival, at Castle Donnington, headlined by RAINBOW, SCORPIONS and JUDAS PRIEST. Kay was also a band manager in the 1980s and early 1990s. During that same period, Neal also managed a large studio complex in South London called Samurai Studios, where he also learned the art of live sound engineering. Neal, who is retired now, talks with us about the beginnings of heavy metal, his absolute dislike of punk, his relationship with the bands of the era and much more in part 1 of our talk with him on this week's edition of THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST. Tune in via the player below or wherever you get your podcasts.
Booking a compelling music festival is tough. You need the right venue, a good range of bands and your headliner is crucial to the events financial success. So, if you had to curate your own Punk Rock fest with a ten band lineup and a limited budget, how would you go about it? Would you focus on more affordable, up and coming acts or would you lean into legacy bands that tug on the nostalgia of an audience with deeper pockets? Our philosophies differ but the results offer three interesting fantasy options for the 2023 festival goer.
