While at a huge Rock Festival, we had a conversation with a sexy single lady friend about "permission". Do you have to get your partner's "permission" to play? Is permission the same as consent?
There is an old saying that “Money Only Makes You More,” and a great example of this are the founding members of Guns & Roses. More drugs and alcohol use, more attitude and inner band squabbling with more fights is what you got as the members of G&R grew richer. Albums: Appetite For Destruction and the Use Your Illusion I & II brought fans from everywhere, but fans often times got more than what they paid for. Getting into more confrontations with leader Axel Rose, which led to more show cancellations, more altercations, more riots and more destruction. In 1988, Guns & Roses was labeled as The Most Dangerous Band in the World after some fans were trampled and crushed to death at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Donington England. This title was never removed. Axel Rose was a Diva in the worst way, Slash and Drummer Steven Adler had near life ending drug addictions. Most Dangerous Band was just one way to define Guns & Roses, but not only way. To learn more, press play.

Dynamic rock outfit HER have been steadily building a name for themselves on the Australian music scene, with their infectious blending of rock and blues-infused grunge goodness finally getting the band national recognition following the release of their latest EP, Toe Rag.With members having played with and shared stages with the likes of The Screaming Jets, Keith Richards, Divinyls and Billy Thorpe, HER most certainly have the pedigree for a career in rock, they just need the exposure.Which comes next weekend in the form of the Mitchell Creek Blues and Rock Festival, where HER have been given the honour of closing out the three day festival on September 15. Undoubtedly the heaviest act of the 120 artists asked to perform, HER are flying the flag for harder-edged music, and do so with pride and enthusiasm.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Mish Davie and bass player Jerome Smith to find out more."It just came out of the blue," Davie enthused about the opportunity to close Mitchell Creek. "I was contemplating where are we going? What are we doing with this band? It's such hard work, and I was really having a downer to the point of thinking I don't even know if it's worth keeping this band going. And then the phone rang, and it was Jimmy, and he said 'hey Mish how would you like to come and play at a festival I organise?' So it was totally out of the blue but he said he had been listening to us for a while, and he was really drawn to the single The Truth, and that's basically how it happened."Part of HER's appeal comes in the fact that they are continually pushing their musical boundaries in an attempt to break free from the mould of being another in a long line of run-of-the-mill rock bands that are a dime a dozen in music."It's such a process," Davie explains of HER's overall sound. "For me personally, I collaborate still with my old guitarist. We've got so much stuff on the shelf we have yet to release, so that has been interesting bringing that in. When I first started this band six years ago, that was all the songs I had with my back catalogue. That first album was quite eclectic. Including Jerome, there's four drummers on the first album, so it was all hired guns. Now it's been 18 months to two years with this line-up, and Mark McLeod (drums) is now on board, and he has a really distinct style, so that's been interesting melding that into what we do with the kind of stoner rock and slower, bluesy rock stuff. It's really amped up the style and pushed it - because Mark is quite a metal player - and he has pushed what we do heavier. But what has happened with Nelson (guitar), Jerome and Christian (guitar) as well is all of us write. It's just so good to get together with a creative and talented group of people who, in their own right, all write music and have their own style."In the full interview Mish and Jerome talk more about the sound of HER and how it came about, their upcoming show at Mitchell Creek Blues And Rock Fest and what it means to them and their music, what to expect live from HER, the EP Toe Tag and how it was received, pushing their limits musically, finding the balance of genres in the writing and recording stage and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Bayside High School in Queens, New York began an early celebration of its 80th anniversary, making it one of the oldest public schools in the five boroughs. At a ceremony Saturday, U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing), state Assemblyman Ed Braunstein (D-Bayside) and state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) gathered with students, staff and alumni of the storied school to mark the occasion. The lawmakers presented proclamations declaring the importance of the school and the significance of the anniversary.Opened in 1936, and built during the Great Depression, Bayside High School was the first in the city to be constructed with federal funds from the New Deal-era Public Works Administration. The school cost $2.5 million.Gregg Sullivan, chairman of the Friends of Bayside High School, ran through many of the great historical events the school had borne witness to.“This school takes us through a number of great human events,” he said. “The Great Depression, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and the J.F.K. assassination. The school was also home to the very first Folk and Rock Concert to benefit education in Native American schools in the United States as produced by student Rich Buckland. The historical significance of the school, and its 80 years as a single entity, were themes each speaker touched on.“You have to love what Bayside has been and is for the community,” Avella said. “It is a historic school.”Principal Michael Athy, speaking about his vision of the school—past, present and future—said the success of Bayside is due to its legacy as one of the most rigorous and community-oriented schools in the city.

The festival is in two parts (July 22-23 & September 2-3, 2023). These Frontline family artists share the stage with other iconic rock and metal bands who still proclaim an eternal message, delivered over 40 years.
Paul Newton from Uriah Heep talks to Phil Aston for the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast Welcome to another episode of the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast! In this episode my guest is Paul Newton. He's known for his remarkable bass playing skills, he's been a part of the progressive rock scene since the late 60s, and he was the original bass guitarist for Uriah Heep. Recently, he added ‘author' to his impressive repertoire. Paul's music career is one to be celebrated. His early days with the progressive group Shinn saw him collaborate with organist Don Shinn and drummer Brian "Blinky" Davison. He then joined forces with Ken Hensley and Lee Kerslake in a reformed line-up of The Gods before becoming a founding member of Uriah Heep. Paul played a pivotal role in Uriah Heep's first three albums, which really set the foundation for the band's illustrious career. He has appeared on a plethora of recordings. In recent years, he's taken the stage with Uriah Heep Legends, alongside fellow Uriah Heep alumni Ken Hensley, John Lawton, and Lee Kerslake. He was also at the Masters of Rock Festival in the Czech Republic on 11th July 2019, where he played with Uriah Heep for the first time since 1971. That was a momentous occasion for rock fans around the world! Paul has made his debut as an author with the release of his book 'Bone Structure: A Journey From Boy To Band'. This fictional story, based on his life, gives us a unique glimpse into his journey through the eyes of an alter-ego. Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine
Legendary NWOBHM disc-jockey Neal Kay, who was an important factor in the rise of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM), along with Tommy Vance, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, joins us on The Loaded Radio Podcast Between 1975 and 1980, Neal managed the rock club known as "The Bandwagon Heavy Metal Soundhouse", which catered to the burgeoning genre that we know today as heavy metal. With help from the music papers of the day, "Sounds" and "Melody Maker", Neal established the venue as the location for new upcoming bands and like minded fans of the heavy metal genre. Band demo tapes started to arrive in droves after a two-page article in "Sounds", penned by journalist Geoff Barton. Kay had one of the biggest club sound systems ever seen at the time, being an 8000 watt PA, comprising mainly JBL/Martin speakers and coach built JPS associates amps. The PA was so loud that the mixing desk was "flown" on chains, suspended from the roof to help avoid feedback from the record decks. Kay would often be found at massive heavy metal gigs at venues like the Rainbow Theatre and Hammersmith Odeon, and would eventually hit the road with such iconic acts as BLACK SABBATH, RUSH, AC/DC, JUDAS PRIEST and countless others. Neal was he first high level touring rock DJ of his time. Kay would also assist in arranging and producing demos of new heavy metal bands, recorded at Spaceward Studios in Cambridge. Amongst these acts were SAXON, PRAYING MANTIS and IRON MAIDEN. He championed these and other acts, and went on to tour with those bands on full UK treks. The resulting popularity of IRON MAIDEN's recording led to a record contract for them with EMI. Several other NWOBHM bands also got contracts due to their Soundhouse demos. Kay worked with EMI Records compiling many of these demos onto an album called "Metal for Muthas", of which several volumes were released. In 1980, he was the MC for the very first Monsters of Rock Festival, at Castle Donnington, headlined by RAINBOW, SCORPIONS and JUDAS PRIEST. Kay was also a band manager in the 1980s and early 1990s. During that same period, Neal also managed a large studio complex in South London called Samurai Studios, where he also learned the art of live sound engineering. Neal, who is retired now, talks with us about the beginnings of heavy metal, his absolute dislike of punk, his relationship with the bands of the era and much more in part 1 of our talk with him on this week's edition of THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST. Tune in via the player below or wherever you get your podcasts.
Booking a compelling music festival is tough. You need the right venue, a good range of bands and your headliner is crucial to the events financial success. So, if you had to curate your own Punk Rock fest with a ten band lineup and a limited budget, how would you go about it? Would you focus on more affordable, up and coming acts or would you lean into legacy bands that tug on the nostalgia of an audience with deeper pockets? Our philosophies differ but the results offer three interesting fantasy options for the 2023 festival goer. Package about how Afghan youths rock and rolled all day to the first music festival in the country for three decades. Kabul, Afghanistan. Produced by Ruth Owen. Also available in High Definition. With Voiceover.
When they first burst out of Glasgow in 1981, they were vibrant, priapic, anthemic and focused. As they showed on a three-tarck demo, and on the subsequent debut single for independent label Neat (‘Roll The Dice'/'Love Xs Love'), they were much much more than mere Def Leppard slaves. In fact, the Pettin had an international sound that owed something to AC/DC, UFO, Thin Lizzy and Foreigner, but also had its own raging momentum. Not that the band found the road forward straightforward. But, thanks to a work ethic that took them around the country, plus a valuable session for Radio 1's prestigious ‘Friday Rock Show', the band eventually landed a crucial deal with the major Polydor Records. Moreover, their 1983 debut album (Lettin' Loose) was co-produced by the creative Mack…together with Queen guitarist Brian May. Now, that's pedigree. Amazingly, that album has survived more than 25 years of high-speed, hi-tech developments intact. While other, more celebrated records have dated badly, Lettin' Loose re-affirms the belief back then that the Pettin would plunge to big time stature. What went wrong at the time has little to do with band, or lack of ambition/talent. In America, where they should have broken big, long before Bon Jovi gave Love A Bad Name, they were held back by the label's insistence on an anaemic re-mix (as well as a title change to ‘Heavy Pettin', which caused more confusion than anything else). If the band's essential, vital British brio had been left as conceived in the first place, who knows what might have been achieved. Still, a slot on the bill for the 1983 Reading Festival, the day that Black Sabbath infamously headlined when fronted by Ian Gillan, did them no harm. And touring with both Kiss and Ozzy helped the quintet's progress. Perhaps then, it should have been obvious that record company politics were to scupper Pettin.. A third album, The Big Bang, was released by FM Revolver in 1989 – and still proved this lot were way ahead of so many others who were selling truckloads of ‘units' and getting acclaim from the media But, as the 1980s faded into memory, so too did Heavy Pettin. However, what has happened over the past two decades is that every so often, people will dust down those Pettin recordings, scratch their heads in confusion and wonder what went wrong. Well, recriminations never help; they only serve to fuel frustrations. But now the band are back ! – not for nostalgic reasons, not re- capture a long past youth. Not to right past wrongs. But to make music. So, here we are, not looking backwards to those years, when this lot were ready to take on the world and toured with Motley Crue and Ratt. No, this is about the 21st Century. Driven by a desire, passion, and a capacity simply to invoke the simple magic and rapport of what this band once stood for. Since stepping back out in 2017 the new line up fronted by frontman Stephen “Hamie” Hayman, the band have been going about the business of reclaiming their reputation as a “tour de force” live. 2018 saw them on tour in the UK with American legends Angel. 2019 a headline set at HRH hell followed by another headline appearance this time in Germany at the Headbangers festival, rounding off the year with another tour around the UK with Rockgoddess. 2020 promised to be the best yet, starting off with the amazing Monsters of Rock Cruise X followed by another headline festival appearance at the Brofest festival in Newcastle. Then of course Covid happened! In August 2022 after which felt like an eternity the band went out on a run of shows that would see them play in 5 deferent countries across Europe. Kicking off with a headline slot at the Legends of Rock Festival followed by a triumphant return to their hometown of Glasgow as “Special guests” to the legend that is Michael Schenker! The band have their eyes set firmly on 2023. This will be the 40th anniversary of the debut album Letting Loose. To mark the occasion a new remastered version of the Brian May produced original is slated for a March release followed by a run of shows. The plan is to record these shows for a 40th anniversary Live release later in the year. During the lock down period a new album was written, which is high on the agenda to round off 2023. With a new management deal and solid line up in place the future looks bright. Rock ain't Dead!
