In this special two-part episode, Andrew sits down with his dad, Jeff Silver, CEO and founder of Mastery Logistics Systems. This is part one, beginning with Jeff's life in 1980 at the University of Michigan. In 1984, Jeff joined Paul Loeb and others in building what became American Backhaulers, one of the industry's first and most successful freight brokerages. C.H. Robinson acquired American Backhaulers in 1999, and a key driver of that industry-changing deal was Express, the technology system built by Jeff and his team that helped accelerate C.H. Robinson's growth for years to come.In this episode, Jeff also shares:His college years at the University of Michigan, passion for language, and early jobs scrubbing yachts and painting houses. How he got started at American Backhaulers and what led him to write the industry's first load-matching algorithm. The lasting impacts of American Backhaulers that live on in the industry today and how its acquisition by C.H. Robinson unfolded. What makes a great seller and the book that changed his view of sales. His time at MIT, pursuing a master's in engineering and logistics, and the path to founding Coyote Logistics, which was acquired by UPS in 2015.The challenges that Mastery Logistics Systems is tackling today for major trucking companies like Werner, Schneider, and others.Follow The Freight Pod and host Andrew Silver on LinkedIn.***This episode is brought to you by Rapido Solutions Group. The buzzword these days is AI. "Artificial Intelligence". It's a scary topic of discussion if we allow it to be. But there are good opportinities to use AI, and Paul Loeb who is the founder and CEO of DropTrack has found a way to have it work in the music industry for independent artists. When Paul started a record label several years ago, he experienced the pains of music promotion, which led him to create DropTrack. What he discovered along the way, is there are more opportunities than ever for musicians, but it's hard to discover the right ones and cut through the noise of the competition. What he did was create DropTrack, which uses AI to help artists save time promoting their music, so they can focus on what they do best. From promoting your music to online streaming services, to writing a press release using their AI PR Agent, which can write a press release for your music simply by uploading the song. The company also provides a service called “Done For You”, wherein Drop Track acts as your agent, where they help in promoting the music, do a personalized outreach to applicable influencers, along with providing reports on who is listening to your music. DropTrack's mission is to connect musicians around the world with their best opportunities for success. Paul Loeb is a seasoned executive in the music and technology industries, best known as the Founder and CEO of DropTrack, a cutting-edge AI-powered music promotion platform. With over two decades of experience, Loeb's journey in the music industry has been marked by his passion for music, technical expertise, and a relentless drive to innovate. www.droptrack.com © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy.
In this first episode, Chris and Alicia head out to Sand Draw, a beautiful and vibrant bit of desert dry wash woodland in the Mojave Desert that almost became an industrial sacrifice zone for the energy industry. It's a good place to see why the desert needs protection, what's at stake, and that desert protectors can win. We mention Paul Loeb's book Soul of a Citizen, which is available here: https://www.paulloeb.org/soul-of-a-citizen/ . Highly recommended, especially if you're wondering whether you have it in you to become an activist. Note that Loeb doesn't use the word "citizen" in the sense of someone born in a certain place or with a theoretical legal right to be in a place: it's all about community involvement. Speaking of community involvement, we'd like to thank the folks who called in and left us voicemail messages with their views about desert protection. You sparked some great conversation. Today's episode is with Paul Loeb. Paul is a young, charismatic, tech and business savvy self-starter, president of indie record label, and the CEO of the new artist-friendly music DropTrack. Thousands of music producers and record labels use DropTrack to share their music and get feedback from global DJs, blogs, radio, and industry contacts. Paul has been using technology to provide solutions to problems, big and small, since the age of ten. Creator of the award-winning USC Transportation website, co-founder of the Facebook app Portcard, and restaurant application building service OrderingApps, he's now applying his techspertise and entrepreneurial spirit to providing marketing solutions for the music industry, via DropTrack. We discuss his beginnings, how musicians and entrepreneurs can tell their stories and ways to stand out in a cluttered world. The most impressive thing to me is that he does all this while maintaining his blog Really Cute Cats. DropTrack: http://www.droptrack.com/ Cats blog:... Paul Loeb is the founder and developer of DropTrack, a web service which helps artists to promote their music to record labels and industry tastemakers. Besides housing, tracking, and streamlining the process of music promotion for producers and bands – the platform allows record labels and DJs to manage demos and music submissions in a centralized location. DropTrack is currently being used by over 6,000 artists and labels, including the likes of Tiësto and George Acosta, and new features are added frequently. Some of the current features include real-time analytics, integration with DropBox and SoundCloud, and individualized promo links and emails. Not just an entrepreneur, but also an electronic music producer known as Really Cute Cats, Paul also talked on how his love (and allergy) for cats grew into an ecommerce business – and then a music act. If you've ever wondered "is my activism actually accomplishing anything?" this is the book for you. When you feel like you're only shouting into the wind, when you're tempted to listen to friends who say nothing will ever change, Paul Rogat Loeb has the antidote. The book seamlessly weaves inspiring examples of unexpected everyday heroes, ordinary people who have achieved successful activism and made a difference in their communities, with lessons for each of us in our daily strivings to make the world better. Environmental writer and activist Bill McKibben said, “Soul of a Citizen has been a powerful inspiration to citizens acting for environmental sanity, showing how they can take committed stands, even if they don’t know every last answer. The new edition is even more inspirational.” And Jonathan Kozol raves, “I stayed up half the night reading Soul of a Citizen, finding it a beautiful and morally transcendent work. Paul Loeb is a personal hero of mine who gives decency and generosity a political character, in the humblest of ways. The new edition is magnificent.”
